    At least from what I know, his voice got like that because of several strenuous, frigid seasons of playing on ferry boats and the like. After that, he’d gotten several surgeries to repair his damaged vocal chords, which did all but help. This gave Armstrong the rasp we know him for today

    • @TTFMjock
      @TTFMjock Год назад

      If so, it was from before his first vocal sessions at age 26, when the rasp was fully formed. New Orleans musicians used to walk all night in the rain to sound like him.

    Louis Armstrong easily has one of the most instantly recognizable voices in the world and it would be difficult to disguise. He should have just nodded and let John Daly do the verbal response to make this set more challenging. Bennet Cerf is too sharp to miss the identity of the person making those grunts.

      His WML? appearance in 1964 was indeed heralded by a thunderous ovation from the audience. A fitting tribute to give to a man who freely and unstintingly gave of himself through his music...

  • @jzerony
    @jzerony 11 лет назад +13

    What stupid posts I'm reading here, trying to make something out of nothing - there's no contempt in the audience, no disrespect, it's not a smattering of weak applause - take it for what it is - early television... people didn't go crazy back then like they're on the Arsenio Hall Show going "whoop whoop whoop" - - they applauded politely!! But putting all that aside - aside from being an amazing talent, I have to say what a SWEET MAN Satchmo was!! So genuine!! He is sorely missed!!

What a warm, kind, sincere gentleman who also happened to be 'gifted beyond human' as a jazz musician, one of the few whose influence is not only still felt today but also whose influence includes two instruments - his voice and his horn. (To see a heart-warming photo of Louis, go to Google/Life photo collection, type in his name and scroll through for a b & w of him with a group of young black girls on the street, one of whom appears to be singing for Louis.)
