Try to listen to Mr. Coles first recording of a “Christmas Song”. If I remember he recorded three versions. The first was recorded in 1945 with his trio and a “String Choir”.
NAT "KING" COLE recorded THE CHRISTMAS SONG (MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU!) twice in 1946 with The King Cole Trio; with the music of Nelson Riddle in 1953; with Ralph Carmichael's music in 1961.
My Mom loved to listen to singers, being one herself....Nat King Cole's music was always welcome in our house, and it was a great loss when he passed RIP Nat and sleep well.
Nat "King" Cole was a supremely talented performer. For those unfamiliar with him, check out his performances on youtube and get a load of this great, great artist.
I actually met Mr.Cole on the streets of Los Angeles in the early fifties with my father, who Knew Mr. Cole from show business. Very nice man, and of course a very great singer. God bless Mr.Cole, would love 2 be able 2 sing with you someday .^_^
Bob Anderson - Wow, what an amazing story and wonderful memory. I think I can say on behalf of millions of NKC fans how envious we are - but happy you lived this! :-)
My Uncle drove Nat from the airport to the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami in 1954. Uncle Jack was thrilled to do so, and brought a Marine buddy with him. Both were on active duty, and were doing their First Sergeant a favor. They were also White. When they got to the hotel, they were informed by the Concierge that "No Ni22ers" were allowed to enter by the front door. Jack and his friend were ready to whip the Concierge's butt, but Nat intervened. He said, "I don't need the trouble, cool it!
I am an old rock and roller from the 60s and 70s but I have to say Nat King Cole along with Andy Williams have the greatest voices in history. (My humble opinion) :-)
ParkerAllen2 said it all: wish we could've heard Mr. Cole speak after such a wonderful game; we already know the elegance of his singing voice. And Arlene- yet again- rocks!!
Imagine sitting in a small intimate night club watching and listening to Nat or Ella or any number of entertainers. They were so much more accessible to the public back then. None of the major stars of today would even consider doing that now. Instead your packed into huge auditoriums with thousands of others and the only way to get a good look at them is to bring binoculars or just sit and watch the huge screens on either side of the stage.
Nat is one of my favorites. Even as a child I bought his 45's. I hated when he got cancer in his 40's. But he put out a lot just the same. There was "Ramblin Rose " and "Angel Smile " and "My True Carie Love " and "Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer " and "Cat Ballou " and so many classics. Great to have realized he was that good so soon in my life. That made the journey easier.
Growing up in a white ethnic family, the only prejudice my parents voiced was against Italians! So when my mom asked what I wanted for a graduation present, I said, "I'd like your Nat King Cole albums". It was a six album set. (From the "Longines Symphonette Society") 48 years later I still have them and they still sound MINT!
@@bimplizkityo Animosity passed down from my grandparents who fled (former) Yugoslavia. Italy took land during war & never gave it back. My generation didn't conform to their grudge.
Rosie Clooney said she’d hear a song on the radio, sung by Nat…and want to run home and record it. When she’d get to it, she said she realized that it wasn’t the song, because there really wasn’t much there…IT WAS ALL NAT! RIP…
Guy, this was the early fifties. Nat had only been in the business about six or seven years at that point, as he said not yet in a leading role. Most of his individual fame came in the fifties, not earlier.
The ignorant white advertisers in 1956-1957 refused to keep sponsoring Mr. Cole's tv show. I remember as a child watching his program. I thought he was very attractive and classy. So glad for RUclips and the worker bees that post these wonderful bits of history. We should all be judged by our character, not the color of our skin. A fan from Las Vegas, NV July 20, 2019
@cheyenne86 every christmas since I've been a 5 year old I've listened to Nat amongst others. Every christmas is 10x better with Nat, Bing and Dean... Bless all these good artists
that was the era of great song lyricism in America...great singers from A to Z--its all gone with the wind. Diana Krall and Michael Feinstein bring back flickers of it. And there was Bobby Short in NYC at the Algonquin Hotel--but that great one is gone too
Well, popular culture has been in a state of steady decline for decades now. And there's also a little thing called generational differences. To the baby boomers it's Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald. To the millennials it's Jay Z, Taylor Swift and Cardi B.
Sad how quickly comments degenerate to slurs. NKC was one of the great Voices, period, as well as an accomplished jazz pianist early on. Don't insult the multicolored world by qualifying as "Best Black" etc. His television show was very popular in the early 1950's, an extraordinary accomplishment before the Civil Rights movement had grown stronger. Our nation should have purged the racist elements forever, but they keep coming back like malignancies.
I had a pretty good look down the comments. Who has made slurs, insults or made racist comments? It's like you're commenting on a bad behavior that hasn't happened
I scrolled pretty far down the comment section and saw no ill comments about Nat King Cole or racism. You must have tried to start a fire where there isn’t one.
@Rusty Shackleford You just slandered my mother and father, both of whom were Democrats and typical 1950s liberals in that they opposed racial segregation. Neither of them had a racist bone in their body. Yes, many white Democrats in the South (and elsewhere to some extent) were racists back then. That’s why those Democrats eventually became Republicans starting in the ‘60s. A Democratic president, Lyndon Johnson, alienated them by pushing through federal legislation granting rights to black people racists wanted to keep denying them. He said at the time he knew it would cost his party white Southern support, but he did it anyway. That was a big turning point. You can read more about it here: www.google.com/amp/s/www.history.com/.amp/news/how-the-party-of-lincoln-won-over-the-once-democratic-south
One of the greats. Miss him. My mom’s favorite, Ramblin’ Rose.
People of often forget to mention Nat King Cole was one of the greatest genius jazz pianists of all time. Listen to the trio recordings Mind-blowing.
He really was the King. My opinion the greatest american singer.
mine too
What a voice, what a singer, what a man!
Whoever slanders this man has no class. This guys voice is literally unforgettable and he along with Bing are the voices of Christmas.
I see what you did there.
Whoever slanders this man is a racist, pure and simple.

My most favorite male singer, the "unforgettable" Nat King Cole!

He had perfect pitch. I love his voice.
This is priceless! One marvellous voice with such a great sense of humour!

The man had star power flowing from him. Pure class and style.
Come on. Life changes. Let's appreciate music without having to compare the past with the present. We still love some Cole!
Nat King Cole is an amazing singer. His Christmas songs are especially good.
My favorite male singer! A great gentleman! Nat King Cole!
Nat was a fantastic soloist i doubt if anyone could ever have style or a smooth creamy voice as his rip, Mr. Cole
I am an old rock and roller from the 60s and 70s but I have to say Nat King Cole along with Andy Williams have the greatest voices in history. (My humble opinion) :-)
LEGEND!!!

Nat Cole's voice was like fine wine.
It's pretty wild that we have video of these icons on a game show.
He was a most gifted vocalist!
I wish there had been time to engage him in conversation!
A Great talent, his voice today passes all racial barriers, a legend in American music.
This multi-talented man left this planet way too soon. His style and class is seriously missed.
Mr. Route 66 himself. Top shelf!.
I love his voice!!
classy, cool, and sweet.
THE GREATEST VOICE EVER !
What a fun show. :D
He had such a beautiful voice. It could bring tears to my eyes!
I enjoy when the celebrities enjoy themselves. Cole did, as did Ronald Reagan and Johnny Ray.
Betcha that Cole's appearance was UNFORGETTABLE! ;D
I have all his records (CDs) What a great singer!
@americandreamer6092 ...You don't have all of Nat "King" Cole's records!!!
Nat truly is the King
The ladies on the panel are so intuitive. They are almost always breaking down who the person is.
THIS MAN IS GOD!!!! And that voice would melt butter, shame he only uttered one word!!! LOVE IT!!! swoon

He had a wonderful talent!

"A masculine married whistle." LOL Dorothy was the cutest.
Best wishes on your book! I look forward to reading it. I am a big fan of Nat King Cole.
Without doubt the Greatest Black Singer who ever lived , the One and Only Nat King Cole
This was such a huge deal for him to be on this show.
What a gentleman!
Nat should have gotten bigger applause. A class act and awesome talent.

How did we drop all the way for Nat "King" Cole to Jay-Z?
Certainly went down the hill
Who is Jay-Z?
Well, popular culture has been in a state of steady decline for decades now. And there's also a little thing called generational differences. To the baby boomers it's Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald. To the millennials it's Jay Z, Taylor Swift and Cardi B.
How cool to be those people. Guessing which star they are soon gonna meet :)
In the early days of the show they got to ask more than one question at a time with the mystery guest.
"WHISTLER'S MOTHER!"
😂😅😆🤣
