One of Hollywood's most amazing and funniest actresses. She was heavily into wonderful charities and helped a great many people. She was fabulous in such movies as Auntie Mame, His Girl Friday, The Women, Gypsy, The Trouble with Angels, Mrs. Pollifax Spy, Crooked Hearts and so many more. She was nominated 4 times for an Oscar but sadly never won and should have. Just as sadly she passed away at 69 from breast cancer in 1976. She was very loved by all.
I used to watch this show every week with my parents when I was growing up. I would have been nine in 1953. I probably didn't know who Rosalind Russell was at the time, but I sure did in 1958 when I saw Auntie Mame. She was great in that.
I've watched it many times & laugh just as hard each time. I think I laugh more because I know what is coming. Kilgallen, go ahead Bennett it could be anything.
Please watch the wonderful broadcast of Wonderful Town on CBS here on RUclips to hear Hollywood royalty prepare for the great Leonard Bernstein’s wonderful score. Please revive this glorious musical with the GREAT Rosalind Russell! She was absolutely wonderful on this show. More more more please…
Me too. My mother was 12 when this episode aired so I sent the link to her & she laughed & enjoyed the fact that I too thought it hilarious despite my not being born back then.
And later in the year....she was to star in my favorite picture Picnic. Which, as today is Labor Day, I will be watching later! God bless your soul, Roz.
I love the way John Charles interacted and reacted to/with his guest stars and laughed so freely. He truly had the ability to put all contestants at ease😮.
In searching for the Mrs. Polifax movie l discovered some fascinating info. Ms Russell wrote the screen play, using her mother's madsin name as pseudonym. McKnight. My name. She was from the same area as my family. More research coming up! It would be something to find a distant relationship to one of my favorite stars.😅
66 years ago and I wasn't even 6 years old yet so me and my sister were probably in bed when this came on. Now I understand why my parents were out in the living room laughing their heads off.
I read all the Mrs. Polifax books back in the day. They were so good i slipped them into my textbooks during class! I did not know they ha❤d been made into a movie. I am going to youtube right now! I hope l can find it. A perfect mix of fav actress with protagonist. Thank you for the info.
The very great Rosalind Russell. It boggles my mind that I must have just been twelve or so when I saw Auntie Mame as a film (1958). I'm not sure I got the drift of the film, but I remember just how much I laughed, doubled over, at scenes where Russell appears. Robert, uk.
Ditto to all your comments ! ! ! My favorite WOMAN ! ! ! See her with Robt. Donat in "The Citadel" & the book was wwitten by A. G. Cronin, a great book, too.
THIS is family TV at it's best!! We get to view all sorts of people: entertainers, writers, musicians, etc. WHY can't TV do better? ----> because we've been dumbed down. I miss old school programs like this. Entertainment and education with real talent. Our whole family (including my Grandpa and Granma) sat together to watch this show, Ed Sullivan, Jackie Gleason, etc., and enjoyed real talent, not the dazzle of computer generated special effects. I hope viewers who like this check out Saturday night Film Noir with Eddie Muller on Turner Classic Movies. My 96 year old mom loves the information provided by the host before and after every movie. We both appreciate what we learn. It is a relief to turn away from the news of today and focus on something positive. Often, the films are adapted from a novel and make very good reading.
No, the date is incorrect. This actually was 1953 because that was when she appeared in Wonderful Town. She was born in 1907, so she would have been 45 here...
Nonsense. Have seen dozens of these and you are entitled to not like him, but your characterization is asinine. If it was accurate, he wouldn't have stayed on the show as long as he did and he wouldn't have been so well liked by both fellow panel members and the viewing public alike. The evidence suggests you are in the minority on this one, sorry.
Just love Rosalind Russell. My grandma used to be her seamstress. I can’t tell you how proud I am of that.
That's fun! Any stories?
Wow. How wonderful. I can believe you are proud. Very nice memory.
I would love to know some real life stories from your grandmother…RR seamed like a genuine beauty inside and out🌹
I love it!💕😀
Wow that's wonderful I loved Rosalind Russell 🙏❤️
She has to be the funniest mystery guest of the series! Such a sweet lady.

Rosalind was brilliant. This is probably my favourite.
Yea. This was a funny episode.
She's having a BALL with stumping the panel!
She was pure class
Don't watch this while drinking hot cocoa... I'd seen it before and still cracked up! Love Rosalind's sense of humor!
Beer is even WORSE! 😂🤣
This woman was brilliant. Always.
Her humor is so deadpan and straight, it cracks me up! The host’s laugh cracks me up, too, it’s so robust.
Quite possibly the very best mystery guest episode in the long run of WML. An absolute classic, I've watched this at least a dozen times.

I saw this before, and she was absolutely HILARIOUS!!!

I have watched this at least 20 times. It makes me laugh my ass off.!! So funny!!!❤
I think this may be the most hilarious mystery guest ever!
It is the best, in my opinion.
One of the best comedic actresses of all tome
She certainly was the funniest mystery guest by far. Yeah! Yeah!.
Such a talented actress, one of my favorites.
One of the very best actresses. Also a great show. Thank god for RUclips.
rosalin is or was the best in acting,,loved all her movies, she had a lot of comidic talent,,i wish she was still here,,thank u roz where ever u are,,
"Wonderful Town" opened on Broadway in 1953. This show was actually broadcast on Jan. 4, 1953.

Loved her in "The Trouble with Angels" with Haley Mills ❤❤❤❤ 😇
I never laughed so much with old TV programme...She is so talented beautiful and sooooo funny.......
Me too. My mother was 12 when this episode aired so I sent the link to her & she laughed & enjoyed the fact that I too thought it hilarious despite my not being born back then.
The best guest ever!
Amen.
And later in the year....she was to star in my favorite picture Picnic. Which, as today is Labor Day, I will be watching later! God bless your soul, Roz.
Her movies are laugh out loud funny - she could filet somebody with a smile!
I love the way John Charles interacted and reacted to/with his guest stars and laughed so freely. He truly had the ability to put all contestants at ease😮.

One of the greatest actress no matter the scrip, musical, heavy subject, or bio pic. She will be always be remembered
One of WML most entertaining mystery guests...and pure class!!
Any movie she was in was made that much greater because of her talent.
LOVE Rosalind Russell!
So elegant and I love the necklace and beautiful dress!
Rest In Peace Rosalind Russell. Gone way too soon. Overdue condolences to the family for your loss. 😔💐
I was a little more than a month away from being born when this was filmed..love her
66 years ago and I wasn't even 6 years old yet so me and my sister were probably in bed when this came on. Now I understand why my parents were out in the living room laughing their heads off.
great comment
I am impressed that the panel are all well dressed, and the men stand to great women guests.
I agree with you! What has happened?
A different era. But all charming. Guests & panel alike.
She was gorgeous even older, and that is for sure.
She was so underrated. And so funny.
One of the best in the business. I adore her.
Rosalind Russell was so funny and feisty
She is the funniest mystery guest I've seen so far.

She was a great star
Lovely, Miss Russell and the great panel and of course JCD.
Really love these shows, such lovely people, true stars.
I agree. Could clean clever fun. All well mannered, polite & well read.
She was the funniest mystery guests. RR is just darling.
Ahhh she is a hoot. ♥️ Would love to have known her.
Her role in Mame was exceptional. Her performance reminded me of my Aunt Irene from Brooklyn who loved that film as well.
Ros' reaction to being called 'he' is priceless.
And 48. Up out of her seat with a knuckle sandwich on offer.
Love her!
For context, she was 47 turning 48 during this, which explain her reaction to “under 48” haha
Braden The year in the description of this clip is incorrect, it was 1953 not 1955. Rosalind would have been 45 years old here.
Elspeth Coogan thats so like her. 😂 Rosalind
Indeed. She did not care she was called male but encouraged it. But the 48 was a step too far. Gotta love her humor.
She was ravishing, whatever her age. And of course, her sense of humor was off the charts.
Rosalind is so so very funny.hahaha .very glamourous too
The very great Rosalind Russell. It boggles my mind that I must have just been twelve or so when I saw Auntie Mame as a film (1958). I'm not sure I got the drift of the film, but I remember just how much I laughed, doubled over, at scenes where Russell appears. Robert, uk.
Rosalind talent and manners, then restraint....love Dorothy and Bennet's responses...!!!
the “leading man” line is in reference to her performance in His Girl Friday where she played a man’s role.
What a marvelous woman. Such a great episode.
Love Roz!
Is it weird for a 58 year old guy in 2022 to have a crush on Rosalind Russel? She's magnificent
Adam Watch: Well, appreciation might be a better word since she’s passed but many guys will know what you mean!
Nope! ☮️
A superlative comedienne in the forties: Roz Russell was such a treasure: she was 47 here.
Not 48 or she will offer anyone a punch in the face. She was hilarious.
@@maudeboggins9834 hahaha EXACTLY!
Love her movies
Love her
Always Auntie Mame.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love her necklace.
Roz is the best
This was hilarious!

See her with Robt. Donat in "The Citadel" & the book was wwitten by A. G. Cronin, a great book, too.
This episode is one of my favorite show to watch. I just adore Rosalind Russell. She is adorable. She is also beautiful.

Pull your head out of the sand.
Or some such place.
Have you ever played a leading man?
Yeah!
Are you under 48?
Yeeeaaaahhh!
Wonderful Town was a big hit! Rosalind also had another Broadway smash in "Auntie Mame."
She is indeed a remarkable Lady with genuine great sense of humor! 😊
I think the actual date of the program is January 5th 1953 before she opened in Wonderful Town
THE best!
My favourite guest by far.
Bennet wasn’t going to let it go. She handled him perfectly. “ Carl is my father in law…”
Nobody tops the Roz.
This is soo memorable 😂😅
Not many beautiful woman can do comedy
Certainly not a false testament but I can think in any "beautiful" men (I don't try to be combative) doing comedy ¿? maybe Cary Grant the only one..
Classy show. Classy cast. Nothing as good today.
Roz wore that same necklace in her movie 'never wave at a wac'. I think she produced it so she must've used her personal wardrobe on the film.
Eve Peabody: Yes, you are correct as it was produced by her husband was Freddie Brisson.
Ironically, she turned 48 a few months after this aired if the air date of Jan 1955 is correct. This episode has been dated as 1953 too.
Just before auntie mame
Audrey Daleski: AUNTI MAME was on Broadway in 1956.
This is not 1955. Wonderful Town began its run in 1953.
LMAO!!!
I feel sorry for aging actresses in Hollywood. They're normally discarded by forty.
Most funny What's my line..
Ros actually was 47/48 years old in this episode 😄
No, the date is incorrect. This actually was 1953 because that was when she appeared in Wonderful Town. She was born in 1907, so she would have been 45 here...
@@randysills4418 This episode (S4, Ep18) was actually broadcast on January 4, 1953.
"Wonderful Town" would premier on February 25, 1953.
thumbs up ifJustin scarred brought you here
WRONG DATE! This is the show from Jan 4, 1953.
She played some men's roles at an all-girls school...
Miss Russell voice like miss Bette Davis
No her real voice was far from Bette Davis may be she impersonated Bette too well here
Rosalind was FAR BETTER and more honest and professional than Bette Davis.
What happened to the One Question per panelist ... when quizzing a Celeb
I believe they changed that in later years.
@@TheLordHighXcutioner Rather makes their job simpler

S O M U C H F U N !!! 😂😂😂❤️❤️❤️
She must have been wonderful to know in real life.
"Under 48"; not under 47, 45... 50... 40...
Totally botched broadcast date listing here - Russell opened in Wonderful Town' in 1953, so 1955 is inaccurate.
I think this episode is from Jan '53
Steve Allen uses the same gag every mystery guest. Useless
He is usually annoying!
Nonsense. Have seen dozens of these and you are entitled to not like him, but your characterization is asinine. is she any relation to jane russell?
I remember that stupid show from when I was a kid. The people on the panel were ridiculous. Especially Dorothy kilgallen.
