Shootout! Eastman SB55/v vs Gibson Lukas Nelson '56 Les Paul Junior

  • Two great, affordable examples of a singlecut Les Paul Junior, both released around the same time in mid 2020.
    The Lukas Nelson has an Alnico III, and the Eastman has a Lollar 50's wind - both stock pickups. I shimmed up both dogears to where I like them, but other than that, they're totally stock.
    Guitars are played straight through a Satellite Amplifiers Scamp into a Suhr Reactive Load I.R. - no pedals.
    This is the first time I've ever done a video, so go easy on me! If pre-ramble ain't your thing, sound samples begin at 07:55.

    Thanks for the comparison video!! I appreciate the dialog especially in regards to the specs and your impressions of the guitars in your hands. Nothings worse to me than demo videos that are strictly playing. All that to say I appreciated the variety of content you provided. I've been wanting a single p90 pickup guitar for awhile and have fallen in love with the Eastman SB55 DC/V model. They really make some fantastic custom instruments at a truly affordable price.

Including my Gibson LP Standard.This being said, I did have to file down two of the nut slots. This being my first LP junior style guitar, and loving it, I am going to buy a Gibson LP Junior.

    I have same Eastman sb55/v in this video, absolutely love it. The p90 as you can tell from this video is very fender sounding, I was trying to put some shielding tape in today but it’s so hard to get the pots out. I also don’t notice any difference between having the tone pot on 10 or nocking it back a notch (removing from circuit). Hardware is amazing, all feels incredible quality. Still have the daddario ny xl that came with it, those things last forever

    I appreciate this video Kris. I have been looking at the eastman and a standard junior with the alnico V p90 and will it certainly isn't going to be exactly like the Lukas there is something about the Gibsons that are more align to the sound I was looking for. The Eastman is a little too composed and it comes across a bit jangly over the excellence that is youtube's audio quality. Also for lack of a better term the Gibson just has more balls and really isn't that what a junior's all about. Again thanks is was really helpful.

    Hi Kris! Thanks for the video. I'm not able to try any of the two were I live, so I'll have to take a gamble. But I think I'll be going for the Eastman. I've heard their attention to detail is top notch. So I expect it to have a nicer neck, more rolled fingerboard edges, and a better fret dress. Would you agree on that? Or is the Gibson on par with the Eastman in those features?

    • @breathemyvapours
      @breathemyvapours  3 года назад +4

      Hey Julio! I have to preface with saying it seems to me that Gibson US has stepped up their attention to detail in 2020, or maybe I just got a good one, but I’m impressed with the work on the Nelson. I truly think either guitar goes toe to toe with a Custom Shop Junior - the Nelson is miles ahead of their regular run Junior IMO, which even that in turn has gotten much better in 2020 than previous years. In particular, the neck profile really blew me away. It feels just like the ‘56 Juniors and R6’s that I’ve played, it’s right there. The Eastman is more like a ‘59 but with more of a V profile than a C, it’s pretty cool, definitely a unique take that fits the guitar wonderfully. No fret issues on either guitar - edges are smooth.

I just so connect with acoustic instruments but Ive had a late in life love for the electric has developed alongside it. Especially, older amp circuits from the 50’s and 60’s. I did watch that batch of instruments that Sweetwater got and everyone from that batch of Gibson LP jrs got returned and resold discount so maybe it was a bad batch. Their acoustics have definitely improved. I’m close to the Mt factory and have seen quite a few come throughout past 20 years and you really had to pick them.
