- Steve Wariner’s crazy musical odyssey is filled with characters with names like Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Reggie Young, Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Mark O'Connor and many others that are either titans or demigods of the music world. In our Truetone Lounge interview, Steve discusses all of the musical giants above, while also taking us from his early years in Indiana, all the way to commercial and artistic success all over the world. Along the way, we cover his mentorship by Chet Atkins, and the struggles he faced to have the opportunity to play on his own albums under the then current “Nashville” studio system. Wariner then takes a moment to give credit to the great Reggie Young, who played additional guitar parts on many of his albums through the years, and how he was greatly influenced by both his playing and tone. He then breaks down the intro and guitar solo to his hit single “Lynda,” showing us how he came up with the solo, and how it works over the song's chord changes. Steve then talks gear, focusing on his Glaser built Strat, red Glaser Bender guitar, 1954 Telecaster, and some of his favorite effects and amplifiers.

What a GREAT interview with a very humble but very talented man, Zac! Also, like someone else below mentioned, I would also love to see you do a TrueTone Lounge interview with the legendary (& newest member of the CMHOF) Marty Stuart! I've been a big fan of his for years and actually learned about Clarence White through Marty's ownership and use of Clarence's '54 Telecaster with the original B-bender.
A guitar player that can give an interview without constantly playing-a rarity.
Very generous and giving interview by Wariner. Zach is the best interviewer bar none. I used to see shows at the Crazy Horse since I lived nearby in Tustin. I grew up near the Fender factory in Fullerton. Rickenbacker was based in Santa Ana. Quite a scene in Orange County and Los Angeles. Wariner continues the heritage.

Had an opportunity to see Steve's brother Terry Wariner live about 10 Or 15 years ago. MONSTER player and singer as well. Steve's dad got up and did "Rose Colored Glasses" and brought the house down! Steve is right his dad was an amazing singer and was probably 70+ years old then. It was really something special as Terry brought him up because he hadn't played onstage with him in years he said. Terry and his dad were both just as nice as Steve and stayed to talk and signed autographs to every fan that asked. Such a talented family of great human beings. Sorry to hear his dad has passed away.

I live in Steve's hometown in ky.. I've always been a Steve Wariner fan.... Im friends with Terry, we use to drive old back roads and listen to music and drink cold beer.. this was the 80s ... Still see Terry in town every once in a while.. a great guy!!! One more thing. My moms cousin from Indiana is married to One of Steve's Teachers in Noblesville In. Mr.Hypes...he still remembers Steve and Terry from when they were in school...

This guy's a beast. I didn't know he existed a week ago and now he's already one of my favorite guitarists. Talented, of course, but the style and the good humor and humility. Also, his frickin' control. And a soulful voice. It's nuts that it's taken this long to find out about him.
I met Steve the day he left for Nashville my brother in law played drums for him ( Dale Greene ) I remember thinking he is not flashy enough to be star, soft voices, but what a humble person. The only famous person I met in person. Ric from Greenwood Indiana.
As a guitar player in a country band in Dallas Texas in the mid to late1980's, you HAD to play a Steve Wariner song. ANY Steve Wariner song, Why Goodbye, Lynda, on and and on. I was honored to meet him at his gig in Midland, Tx. Great singer, guitar player, great man!
I've loved Steve for decades. Go look up some of his older stuff. So talented on every level. You're right. He's a beast.

This is great. I love how honest Steve Wairner is, and I LOVE his song SAILS. I live in Indianapolis and have many relatives who live in Noblesville and no doubt Steve knows some of them and vice versa.
I played Chet Atkins style for years and met Chet Atkins twice. This video is amazing because Steve went that extra mile and made it where I was too humble. Chet let me go on stage with him when I first met him. I never gave Chet my phone number or any way to contact me. I was just too humble and thought it would be disrespectful to give him my personal information. I have sure wished I'd given him my contact info and some of the songs I wrote.

When I played on the Canal Boat tours in New Hope Pennsylvania one of the best songs I did was "Hold On". The audience always loved the beauty of this love song. Steve is such a great writer & vocalist. Always one of my favorite musicians.

Saw Steve and his band in Merryville IN touring for Burning the Road House Down release. He was opening act for George Straight. His playing and his band blew away George's. Tight , Musical and crisp, one of the best live country acts I have seen

Steve mentions the Gretsch white falcon that Chet gave him. Just a little trivia. Billy Duffy of The Cult uses a white falcon also. He’s also I would say a CGP.

Steve has always been a favorite player of mine. He's also a great singer and songwriter. I remember the first time I heard There's Holes In The Floor Of Heaven, I was hooked. I'm from Indiana and he sure made a lot of us proud that made Indiana his home. He seems like a very humble and likable guy. This was ANOTHER GREAT interview by you, you do so many great ones really, it's always a pleasure to watch them. Kudos

My Blackface Fender Bandmaster had two twelve inch Utah speakers in a closed bottom. Put Altec Lansing speakers in their place. What a fantastic interview. Love Steve's playing, humor and stories!

I found it by searching Elliot Easton guitar vids and now I'm learning all about the History of country music just listening in on some interviews with musicians I've never heard of, being that I'm primarily from a Rock based background.
LOVE the guitar lingo & the discussion of music theory as well as technology! Keep up the great journalism, it's SO important to capture this History in the making and sharing the information from the musicians involved.. whether Legends or underground virtuosos and session artists.. there's always fun and often educational stories to be told in music!
I admire your interviewing style having the background in music that you can break down leads in songs and have discussion about what is taking place in a song..like on the fret board!

Wow Zac, another wonderful interview. Isn’t Steve the nicest guy. Not only a terrific talent, but one of the good guys.
One of my all-time favorite guitars is Ricky Skaggs’s purple Glaser tele. Put it right there with Clapton’s Brownie, Brent Mason’s grey tele, and Brad Paisley’s ‘68, ‘63, and the original Alcohol tele. I vote to add Ricky to the list of future Truetone Lounge interviews! If it happens, please insist on him bringing his purple tele.
On to Steve, what a great guy and picker, and those Ron Ellis pickups sound amazing in that guitar! This red tele is one of the first guitars I remember - next to Merle Haggard’s signature tele and Waylon’s leather-bound teles.
Once again a great interview, Zac! This was my third time watching it.
I have been trying to get Ricky, and I would absolutely have him bring the purple Tele. I agree Wariner's Glaser is one of the iconic Telecasters. Thanks, Joshua! Zac

Steve Wariner is my all time favorite guitar player
I've always been such a huge fan of Steve since discovering him in the the early 90's and listening to his RCA greatest hits on cassette. It had all the great songs on it such as "Your Memory, Kansas City Lights, All Roads Lead To You etc. I've got email letters from Steve that he responded to and have them kept in a file. I always go back and listen to those recording and own many of his CD's. Truly a great artist and such an inspiration.

Wonderful interview. Thanks for sharing. I loved 80s and early 90s country including Steve Wariner. The Q&A brought back good memories of dancing at the Yellow Rose in Sacramento (Citrus Heights), back in the day. Named one our cats Spiderman from "Lynda." He showed up one day in our backyard, climbed up the side of our house, and looked at me through the bathroom window when I was shaving. Ended up adopting him. He was a cool cat.
