- Steve Gibson is one of the most recorded guitarists in the world, having played on over 200 # 1 singles across a variety of musical genres. In our Truetone Lounge interview, Gibson speaks of his early years in Peoria, IL, and why he decided to move to Nashville to pursue studio work, instead of touring. We discuss his work in 70's adult contemporary and the incredible experience of recording with George Harrison at his Friar Park home. Steve then shares some of the highlights from his huge log of session work, and about his experiences as the Musical Director for the Grand Ole Opry for the last 15-years. We close our interview with a few of Steve's favorite guitars, that include a 1955 Stratocaster, 1958 Telecaster, and a 1966 ES-335.

It’s always great to hear these interviews with the unsung hero studio musicians. It was nice to hear him mention Hugh McCracken. I met him once while playing a gig in Manhattan. He was very friendly and he told me how much he enjoyed my playing. A huge compliment coming from a studio guitarist icon.

I agree completely about the 70s being the best decade for music made. Take a look at the Billboard Top 100 for 1976. The songs on that list are staggering. England Dan & John Ford Coley brought me here. Not that I was a huge fan of that duo back then, but I recently heard the solo on "Nights Are Forever", a song I always liked -- and I was curious as to who did the solos.... it was Steve Gibson. Now it turns out that I probably heard tons of Mr. Gibson's guitar work at the radio format factory where I worked 1990-2006 -- during the height of the new traditional / 90's classic country era. Great interview.
Finally! I have been trying to find tidbits on Steve Gibson, for years. These Truetone interviews are such a great resource to the Nashville recording world.
He was a pleasure to interview, and he has such amazing stories. It is hard not to pick the Harrison story as a favorite. Zac

Wow! Great interview. I met Steve in 94 when he talked to us about producing our band/next album. What a knowledgeable, nice guy...(he signed my guitar strap that day! I never knew he played on “swinging”... I think I learned how to play with that song... I won a bunch of money at local talent contests doing that song! There are songs I know it’s him playing... always loved his touch and feel for the song... loved his tone... the reverb was always rememberable. I am a fan! Kudos!

I played in Golden Voice Studio. I remember playing lead guitar on an album with a group called The Ambassadors. The album was entitled Jesus is Coming Soon and the date was March 6th , 1971...my dad's 69th birthday. Great studio ! Glenn McMurl

What was the record he played on with George? He said two guys from scotland. I'd like to hear it if it is available.
George played on and produced an album for the band Splinter, that Gibson was hired to play on. Two Man Band was the name of the album. Zac

What type of Bender system is that on his Telecaster around 27 or 28 mins in? It looks like you can use that system without having to cut up your guitar all to hell. Can you share what it is? Or where I can find out more about it?
