  • John Jorgenson is one of the finest and most versatile musicians on the planet. From ground-breaking Country Rock with the Desert Rose Band, rocking stadiums with Elton John, Bluegrass with Earl Scruggs, or playing Gypsy Jazz with his quintet, Jorgenson can seemingly do it all. In part 4 of our Truetone Lounge interview, John plays and tells the stories of some of his favorite guitars. He plays Desert Rose Band era snippets on his Premier 6-string bass, silver sparkle G&L ASAT, and Rickenbacker John Lennon 350 12-string, even showing how he used various effects to enhance their sounds. Then we stop off in the 90’s with Jorgenson’s 1983 Gibson Flying V used during his tenure with Elton John, and his Fender Signature Model Telecaster that continues to be a favorite to this day. While talking amps, John gives us the real run-down on how Matchless amps got started, how his signature model amp was developed, and why things hit the skids for Matchless in 1997. Jorgenson also pulls out his Gitane signature model guitar for some Gypsy Jazz and his signature Blueridge flat-top for some Bluegrass picking.

I've been aware of John Jorgenson since his first work with the Hellecasters, which was mind-blowing. When my wife sang in the opening act for Elton John in Camden, NJ, we stayed for his show. I remarked to my wife how much the saxophone player looked like Jorgenson, but it couldn't be him, because he's a guitar player. When I was certain it was him, I just thought, "How incredible a musician is this guy that's he's the SAX PLAYER in ELTON JOHN's band?!?!?" Now I have the answer!

My dad worked for Leo at G&L for about 12 years. He said John would come in and consult with Leo about what he wanted in his guitars. Leo would then come to my dad, Steve Reed, and tell him what John wanted and my dad would build the entire guitar for him. Not sure John would remember that or if he even spoke with my dad.

I just discovered this 4-part interview with John Jorgenson. John is not only an AMAZING musician, he also seems to be a genuinely nice guy.
Zac, I love the way you conducted this interview… you asked good questions and then “got out of the way”, which brings out some great answers from John. I could tell he appreciated that you not only did your homework, but also that you are very knowledgeable about so many artists and the music business in general. Great job!

What a talent! I saw the Fret King John Jorgenson model. I wanted an f hole thinline tele and ordered it.
I figured out pretty early on that it wasn't hollow at all, but at that point, I had the fever.
It plays great, and it has unusual switching.
Only thing is that I still needed to and did buy a real f hole one.
    This is a great interview.

This series was such a fantastic treat. I knew a decent amount of Mr. Jorgenson's background working with some folks that knew him well but this filled in so many pieces of the story. One of the nicest people you could run across in the music business. I'll never forget the show at The Station Inn in Nashville during the summer NAMM show years ago. John Jorgenson and Brian Sutton with a stage full of fantastic musicians. One set of Bluegrass and another of Gypsy Jazz...my mind was blown away that night for sure. Can't tell you how much I enjoyed this series!

Dale Hyatt took me through the G&L factory (I was amazed at how small it was!) in 1988. I asked him if they’d consider doing bound bodies and sparkle finishes, just like John Jorgenson did, and I got the same answer! “No, we don’t want to get into that!” I wanted something like the sparkle Teles that Fender built for Buck Owens and Don Rich. No dice. Oh well... what’s kind of ironic is that every option I asked Mr. Hyatt for, and got turned down on, G&L now offer! I’m on my third ASAT, a semi-hollow Z-3 in Clear Orange.

I didn't realize the extent of this guy's talent until I heard a gypsy jazz album on Pandora titled "Franco American Swing". The playing on this album blew me away-- then I found out it was the same guitarist that played with the Desert Rose Band-- That really freaked me out-- I searched for months for that album and couldn't find it as it was out of print.
Finally, I found a used copy on line. If you haven't heard this, make a point to do so. It's too bad this album is not available anymore as it is an example of some of the best "Django" style playing I've ever heard. It takes a monumental talent to be that versatile.

You have no idea how full circle this video takes me. I ran into John in Sacramento years ago, When he was still playing with the Desert Rose band. Had no idea as to how influential he would become years later, remembered seeing him on your channel and thinking oh yeah.
One other interesting issue, is that I had really wondered who was playing guitar (a Tele no less) for Elton John’s band on a version of funeral for a friend at Madison Square Garden in New York! I remember thinking whoever that guy is he has landed an awesome gig playing for Elton, and next to Davy Johnston all night.
Wonderful interview, thank you so much Zac!

It definitely changes the low end when you’re picking instead of strumming. Maybe that’s where that chimey sound comes from.

Thanks for the fantastic four part series. Part 4 could have probably been 2 hours or more as I'm sure John has a bunch of other gear. Very ironic that he's still using an Ibanez TS-5 - those had just come out in the 90s when I first saw the Hellecasters and he was rocking one then. I went and bought one the next day, but didn't hang on to it. Would have love to have known what brand strings and gauges he uses, but you can't have it all. It was super cool to have him playing bits of DRB and Hellecasters tunes with the pedals he used. I've kicked all my chorus effects off my board but dang I'd love to have an analog Dimension C as that one sounds great.
