As a frustrated steel player I've used Paul, and Brent Mason, on several of my 'original' home recordings via Band In A Box.. Paul is one of my heroes in the music world as is Brent..
Damn Paul, your playing on the 93 tour of Dire Straits was a revelation. You sounded FABULOUS, I hung on your every note, and I'm into jazz. You completely changed not only my idea about the steel guitar, but genres in general. After your playing I realised music comes from brilliant muso's, any genre, any country, anytime.
Back in the early 80s I was part of the house band at a night club in stone park Illinois and Paul Franklin came in and set in with our band . The highlight of my life.
Really great stuff! I thoroughly enjoyed this interview. Paul is such a nice, positive, humble man; and damn is he talented. I had no idea he was on so many different albums with so many different styles of music and do many big musicians. Really incredible. Thanks again Zack, great job!
Zac, Thank You so much for bringing us all these great stories.............Yes, Paul is full of great stories and one of the nicest guys to visit with. Can't wait to hook up with him again to hear more stories!
Great interview - fascinating and full of music insights. And a big thanks to the interviewer for knowing how to interview by keeping quiet, even in the pauses, which allowed Paul to think of more to say! A rarity among interviewers!
Paul is one of the greatest pedal steel players to grace the industry. His musical knowledge and depth are beyond comprehension. And to top that he is the most sharing and humble human being you will meet. Thanks you Zac for letting us peek into the world of this genius.
From Jerry Reed, to Barbara Mandrell to George Strait, to Travis Tritt to Dire Straits, to The Time Jumpers; Paul is the best! Paul's father built my Sho-Bud double- neck 12 string pedal steel guitar.
I sit down with Paul a few years ago and we talked and laughed about the Owens Barn Session and he shared some of the funniest stories about how George Jones and how he came in and met all the players of the session, Keith Richards, James Taylor, and many more and how much Jones was a little lost knowing some of those guys? His time at that session was PRICELESS.......He said it was so much fun just watching Jones . Paul is just one of the nicest guys to be around and soak up some his knowledge about session work!, Thanks Paul , for your time sharing some of those PRICELESS MOMENTS..............JE
So great and so humble. My son and I had the honor of sitting in with Paul and Vince and the Time Jumpers last year when my son sang one of Vince’s songs. What an amazing experience. The talent in that band is off the charts. Great interview as always, looking for part 2. Thanks, Jimmy
We love our Paul! Turned me on to the pedal steel and has become one of our best friends! He chooses to use Little Walter Tube Amps and we couldn't be prouder!
I’ve talked with Paul several times. He’s humble and kind, very approachable. Don Helms, formerly of Hank Williams Sr drifting cowboys band, told me a story about Paul Franklin: while at a steel guitar player convention when Paul was a very young musician and Paul’s steel malfunctioned. He asked Helms if he could borrow Helms steel and helms declined because he knew nothing of Paul, and Paul was very young. After hearing Paul play, he spoke to Paul and apologized and said Paul could use Helms steel guitar anytime.
Watched the entire interview. I now feel like I have met Paul Franklin in person! Saw him with the Time Jumpers in May 2017 with my brother Jake and our wives. Great interview.
Even though I am just a six-string guitar player, Paul Franklin has long been a big musical influence on me. Thank you so much for documenting so many of the greats!
Thanks--just started watching this, and I can already tell it's gonna be great. Really, if you're within driving distance of Nashville, Go See Paul Franklin Mondays, at 3rd & Lindsley!!! (The group name that did "It's So Nice to Be With You" is "Gallery.")
He's the peak player at the peak popularity of steel. The apex player on the instrument. Don't know if there will be another unless there is a huge resurgence in steel use.
The greatest trill of my musical career was to have Paul Franklin produce an album with me and my songs in Nashville in 1987 - he is truly the best ever and also such a great person.
My good buddy Paul Franklin is the best steel, Acoustic Lap Steel, and baritone steel guitar player around. My favorite Paul Franklin solo off Dire Strait's "On the Night" Live cd is "Walk of Life".
He played the Bakersfield sound as good as any of them from the day and that isn't even his favorite kind of music - wow! We went to Vince Gill's concert in Bakersfield and they played all of the Bakersfield album. His steel playing was amazing, as usual.
Thanks Zack for this upload with Frank. Get JD Maness on your show too. He’s so kind and an amazing player just like Paul Franklin . Played on numerous hits with some of the greatest artist. Reach him through our friend John Jorgenson. ;)
Paul said he played the pedabro on Don't Close Your Eyes. What I think he meant was the song "when you say nothing at all". But there was a bunch of Keith Whitley cuts that Paul used It on.
I keep thinking these things can't get any better but they do - well maybe not better but just as good. What an incredible interview and I don't even play steel.
Too cold at home my dad and i tried to figure it out in 2000 iish but i found it and it was the best i burned a hole in the cd but got it lol you are the best steel player in my eyes just cause you and joe Wright can make it do anything at the end of the day its just a stringed investment the tallent comes above the seat its sad its not in more song thanks for being my seel hero
his solos in "walk of life" are awesome
The best! Zac

On the night is an amazing album, and he is a huge contribution to that
it's my go to album for driving
Mark Knopfler has said many times, he thinks Paul is just the cat's meow; he's impressed as hell with him
That album/DVD is a great showcase of Paul's talent.
12:22 Fascinating discussion on Knopfler and Dire Straits.
"if i find music that i don't like that means i need to listen to it" Paul Franklin. that's a great bit of wisdom.

I loved - Brother of Arms
He is the epitome of a steel player!
From Jerry Reed, to Barbara Mandrell to George Strait, to Travis Tritt to Dire Straits, to The Time Jumpers; Paul is the best! Paul's father built my Sho-Bud double- neck 12 string pedal steel guitar.
Nice to meet you fellows. I love your art music.

Paul has many priceless stories. We were glad to get to document a few of them. Zac

That is a great honor, to play with them. Thanks for watching. Zac
Such great insight on the way Mr. Franklin approaches styles and techniques .. and his willingness to share
I love the solo in the intro to the video
Yes!
We love our Paul! Turned me on to the pedal steel and has become one of our best friends! He chooses to use Little Walter Tube Amps and we couldn't be prouder!
What a history of music and innovations. This man really flavored the sound of Nashville, with the Pedal-Bro, and Baritone PSG, etc.
Another killer interview. Love how you let your guests speak and you just guide them. Paul has so much to share.
Thank you. My favorite interviewer is Dan Rather, on his Big Interview show. Zac
I totally was thinking this. Zac, you have the gift of getting people to share their knowledge. You dimples start the conversation then listen.
Just watched "calling Elvis" Paul's puppet made it onstage.Awesome.
Trying to decide if I want his 4 Franklin pedal on my new steel.

It is our pleasure to do it. Thank you for watching. Zac
Wonderful Zac! Looking forward to part 2.
Thank you! Zac

How cool to hear the story of Calling Elvis ‼️‼️‼️😅
He's the peak player at the peak popularity of steel. The apex player on the instrument. Don't know if there will be another unless there is a huge resurgence in steel use.
Legend
Also lovely to see Sage Benado's product getting some exposure - I have his Richard Bennett unit and love it.
Another great episode, wisdom and truth. Well done Zac.
Thank you. Zac
I used to jam with Paul's younger brother when he was alive in Taylor Mi. R.I.P. Rob!!!
Can’t wait for part two!
Later this week. Editing. Zac
I remember that Gallery hit and didn't know to only till a couple years ago that Paul played on it.
Man im just CRAZY about pedal steel guitars.Steele guitars cry in the night. This man is SOMEBODY.
The greatest trill of my musical career was to have Paul Franklin produce an album with me and my songs in Nashville in 1987 - he is truly the best ever and also such a great person.
That facial expression @35:50
Great interview, thanks for doing this!
33:00 I was so hoping for a note-by-note of his On Every Street solo, probably his best DS moment
Great work as always Zac.
Thanks, Grant! Zac
My good buddy Paul Franklin is the best steel, Acoustic Lap Steel, and baritone steel guitar player around. My favorite Paul Franklin solo off Dire Strait's "On the Night" Live cd is "Walk of Life".
Zac you should get Lloyd Green?
He played the Bakersfield sound as good as any of them from the day and that isn't even his favorite kind of music - wow! We went to Vince Gill's concert in Bakersfield and they played all of the Bakersfield album. His steel playing was amazing, as usual.
He keeps getting better, and better. Amazing cause he was great 30 years ago.
He never stops learning. Zac
It's hard to remember all the cuts he has played on!
I'd sell a major organ for a Franklin PedaBro
8:09 its the first note and bend to Meet In the Middle song
Great !
Thank you for giving a space to these recording legends.
Tom Bukovac in the plans ?
You are so welcome. We have approached Tom, and he has indicated he does not like doing interviews. I hope he reconsiders. Zac
Great interviewer.
Thank you, Zac
Loved it!
Thanks, buddy! Zac
I keep thinking these things can't get any better but they do - well maybe not better but just as good. What an incredible interview and I don't even play steel.
Thanks Jeff! Zac

Nice work!
I don't care that much about Dire Straits, but Paul Franklin is the man.
Can't figure out why would anyone dislike this awesome interview.
I think you should get into Dire Straits and Mark Knopflers work more, there is so much to care about
@@StevenQ74very much agreed
GOAT!
❤❤❤❤❤
thanks
You are welcome! Zac
You did not play in Amsterdam on that Dire Straits tour in The Netherlands, that was Rotterdam
30:35: "...Not that I'm great..." - Yes, you are. Sorry to break it to you Paul.
This is great and maybe I’m mono dimensional but I kept thining to myself: “Talk more about country!” lol
18:49
