My favorite stove, and it has never let me down. I even used it to make my coffee when it was -11°F at a local winter hang a couple years back. Worked like a champ!
Love my cat food burner, I went really cheap and used paper towel 1/2 sheet folded instead of carbon felt or fiberglass. Works just fine for 20+ burns. Then replace it. I do not camp enough to justify the purchase of carbon felt. I am going to try the 4 small holes, I used only 1 big one on the last one I made. Thanks for the tip
And certainly not in Europe, glad to hear that you can just fake it, maybe glaswool can do the trick, Im going to try that. Hey man, thank's for the video.
For warmer weather I use a half an ounce. For colder temps like the fall I use a full ounce of fuel. You can cover to snuff out the flame but it takes some time. Best to just use the least amount of alcohol possible for your boil. 5 minutes or so to boil 2 cups in a titanium pot.
My version was made with ceramic wool and titanium sheet for the pot stand. I actually switched to a new stove that's closer to the starlyte or kojin with the evernew cross stand 2 for a pot support. For solo pots the flame pattern is just better, the pot stand more stable and the stove more efficient. It's been awesome so far. Also switched to an IMUSA mug since I cook in my pot a good bit.
Great vid. Like the idea of 4 small holes at the top instead of one bigger hole. I made one using an old aluminum spray can that was the right size. The tomato cans seem to end up rusting.
This is perfect for the afternoon after a hard but productive day at work. Well done Jason! You have provided another quality video. Thank you sir. : )
Glad I tuned in to this episode, I was thinking to take my alcohol stove on a hike to the Smokies in November. Maybe I just build a new one for the heck of it. Thanks Frozen!!
Great little stoves and so fun to make! Just made myself a new one using the green cat can. I like the idea of the 4 half holes and 4 air holes. Gonna try that on the next one as well as the cut down version you have done. Thanks for great videos!
If you don’t have a heavy duty hole punch, you can use a larger drill bit and some tin snips or a file to make the bigger holes. If you have to purchase the felt and hole punch, you’re spending $26 to make a stove. Sure you can use them to make more stoves, but how often do you need a new one? That’s fine if just like making your own stuff, but may not be cheaper than buying one made by someone else.
Make multiple stoves and give them away... I have built probably 10 to 15 stoves and majority of them I have given away to hunting buddies, camping pals... cause they all are amazed how simple it can be.... you don't need a high dollar JetBoil or whatever is out there
And if for some strange reason you need to cook longer than the capacity of your FF stove, you can just bring a 2nd one to move your pot to when your first one runs out of fuel.
thk you and have a grate hike in life And yes I'm going to have to go into my local hardware shop and try to find some of that plumbers felt I already have the other two cans ready to go
Wow that is a lot of work. I make the Vienna sausage alcohol stove. There is no cutting at all. You only need the tomato paste can and one Vienna sausage can. Just cut out the bottom and the top of the Tomato paste can. Punch one or two holes in the bottom. I use old facecloths (100% cotton) I just cut a strip and wrap it around. I just made another today the worst part was rinsing the food out, Be careful if you set it down on the table if it is windy because it is so light mine blew away and I can't find it. :) But I love these things and I have a (Very expensive) Silver-fire and a Scout and this is better IMO... Thanks for showing another way of doing this. Nice video,
Sounds great! I just love these things. I don't think it's much work though, takes maybe 10 minutes and replaceable parts are always a plus. Mine takes a bit longer than it should because I make mine shorter for 3 season use.
It negates the weight loss aspect of trimming the Fancy Feast can, but for the "3-season" I've seen some folks keep the trimmed-off top portion, flip it upside down, and then press it back onto/around the remaining bottom half. The original top lip of the Fancy Feast can now sits flush on the ground, level with the base of the bottom half. It makes the footprint a little bit wider (noticeably more stable) and gives a bit more dent protection to the base. Optional klutz insurance at the cost of a little weight?
@@FrozensAdventures The beauty of MYOG -- only limitations are usually what's in your rollaway, patience/sanity meter, and ability to resist heading straight to the bench when you wake up with a new (probably bad) idea. I'm working on the second, but not sure it'll stick. Have a good one
I've been using an alcohol stove but have never made my own. What modifications would you do to make this 4 season? I know that you mentioned making the cat food can taller, would that be ut? Thank you for posting this video.
You don't have to use carbon felt as a wick. Anything will work. I use paper towels a lot because they are cheap. You'll have to replace the wicking more often but it will work just fine. Cotton t-shirt or denim works well also, even toilet paper will do. Also a step drill will give you better results for your holes. Many hole punches won't work well and leave jagged edges. You don't have to cut the ring off the cat food can either, just pinch the little edge where the tab was sticks out with pliers or file it down. It should take you a 7 1/2"× 1 1/2" piece of wick material if you use a tomato paste can.
Hi buddy, like it - for my personal preference I'd prefer to have the top covered with a hole to pour the fuel me - but that's just me.!! Do you always light the carbon felt when you use it? And how can I effectively remove all of the labels from the cans..??!

I realize it's well outside the scope of these videos but since you're talkin about DYI projects... I'd still like to see a video on how you built that table with the bottle caps! If it wasn't for all the nasty Bud Light ones I'd make an offer on one you have lol.
It's pretty easy, get a table you don't mind destroying. I got mine for $50 at IKEA. Get yourself some epoxy resin and place a thin layer (small sections at a time) place your caps. Allow time for them to glue themselves down with the epoxy. Get some duct work tape (not duct tape), tape needs to be rigid. Build a wall with tape on the outside of the table so the epoxy doesn't fall off. Dump the epoxy resin over the caps just enough to completely cover them, and blow torch the bubble. The best advice I can offer to you if you take on this project. is make sure you mix the epoxy very well, my first coat wasn't mixed very well and it was sticky. So I had to do another coat.
As far as bud light blaaaah, I hear ya on that one. I couldn't drink all the beer myself so I asked friends to start saving their caps. Most of my good beer have foil on the top of the cap.
Love this. I made some using fiberglass and they work very quickly and efficiently. Better than my canister stove! Have you found the plumbers felt is a better material than the fiberglass? Does one perform better than the other? Thanks again!
Does this 1/2 size cat can hold a full oz of alcohol or more for colder temps? I use a full size fancy feast, but if i dont use a full oz, it does soak up as well and doesnt work right.
About how many boils before you need to replace the carbon felt? PS I'm heading to the Allegheny National Forest next weekend. I keep hoping I'm just going to see you out on the trail in PA somewhere. I'm such a fan of your channel
Thanks Frozen, I am heading down for a two week section hike on the AT with a friend this weekend. Going from Roanoke to Waynesboro. I just celebrated my 19th anniversary of my thru-hike I complete in 2002. I am 62 now so the climbs might be a little slower. I just finished making the stove. WOW! it is so nice. Annoying thing about the fancy feast is the inability to screw the cap back on and store your fuel, for that reason I prefer to buy from Amazon. The redcamp cost $17 Canadian.
Just a tiny piece of Limburger cheese under that carbon felt, then drop off at your enemy's house with a note saying free stove from a friend. Add 1 oz alcohol and light. I like both the soda can one and the fancy feast one but for different applications. Depends if I want a slow cook (penny can) or a fast boil (fancy feast).
@@BingWatcher You can even add a tomato paste, chicken noodle soup, or chicken and rice in a mini bush's beans can. You don't have to worry about cutting the can. A Vienna sausage can is the same size as the mini bush's beans can. Hiram has a video of a Vienna can fancy feast stove. :)

How much alcohol do you use to boil two cups of water and how long does it burn. Can you extinguish the fire by covering if you need to?
