You know Shug, after years of watching your videos, you have inspired me to be a more adventurous backpacker. From hammocks to alcohol stoves, you have changed my prespective on camping. I think that backpacking is one of your greatest gifts to us all.

Hey shug just wanted to let you know I am so grateful that I found you and I consider you part of my extended family.
I used to use alcohol stoves early in my travels as I have traveled this country by bicycle for the last 4 years.
And I believe that this Fancy feast stove is the way to go and return to my roots.
I just ordered my Fancy feast alcohol stove today and got a response from him thanking me for my purchase.
I responded back to him in an email that you should be thanking Shug.
He replied to me again and said he gives thanks to you all the time, and that you're a special person and you make people smile and laugh.
He also mentioned that he would be throwing in a few other things to help me travel across this country some more.
    Thanks , Shug

Mr. Sugary Shug, I must tell you. You and your videos have gotten me through many a long Iowa winter while I wait for spring, and I've enjoyed them so much I feel I owe you a subscription fee:) But now you are helping me through my toughest "winter" yet. Just this year at the tender young age of 31 I was diagnosed with late term colon cancer, and I must say, you have helped me so much. Between the long sleepless nights laying in bed feeling sick, and the endless hours sitting on the throne, (it's called "chemo s##ts") you have been right there with me!
Thank you for all that you do, letting us all ride along, and making us laugh. Keep up the good work!

I quite agree with you about the Fancee Feest, Mr, Shug. I love the fact that I can fill it, place my pot upon it, and THEN light it, with no problems. No pre-priming necessary! The only difficulty I have is that all alcohol stoves are illegal in Southern California during high fire seasons. Apparently a few knuckleheads caused wildfires with them. I use my Giga-Power during those seasons, but dearly miss my alcohol stoves.

Great video, thanks! There are several other advantages to the Fancy Feast stove over a Jet Boil type stove. One is the cost. The fuel for the alcohol stove is much cheaper than buying canisters. Also, you can get the alcohol in more places than the canisters. Another advantage is the weight savings. I'd love to see a video on the comparison between a Jet Boil plus canister weight versus Fancy Feast stove plus several ounces of fuel.

  • @gregr501
    @gregr501 10 лет назад

Completely agree, of the few alcohol stoves I have bought the Fancee Feast is easily my favorite. It just always works no matter what size pot I take and no pot stand needed. Last couple trips I've been on I've used Esbit, I like the simplicity of Esbit but it does mess up the bottom of your cookpot so I have a designated pot just for Esbit.
Side note...glad you didn't catch your face on fire with that Giga Power and that's a sweet hat!

I know this is from 2014 but I just saw it for the first time - Very cool! Although I will be bringing a propane stove with me on my next (and first one since 2000) camping trip, I'm also bringing a couple alcohol stoves (esbit and home made) along with me. It's very cool getting to see these in use and hearing the actual pros and cons of their use. The nice thing is that for a nice day trip / over night these things are pretty close to a catch all.

Haha great entertaining video.. This type of stove also offers a tactical advantage in that it makes it more difficult to be seen and if you need to be in a place where you need a stove but do not wish to be discovered, this type of stove is a better option. I like the Hobo stove but it does make smoke and big enough fire to be seen in a place where fires may not be welcome. Thanks for sharing.. I've never made any kind of alcohol stove only used hobo stoves or just open fires but I am liking the idea of this fancy feast stove.

    Hello Shug,
It's 2022 hopefully post-covid and the fancee feast still is my more favorite stove...because it works well and I don't have to worry about disposing of cannisters, or having smelly camp fuel on my fingers and clothes.
I'm in California and so we're banning gasoline cars, alcohol paint strippers, wood burning stoves, and normal alcohol stoves that don't have a flow control knob. so:
    1. In Southern California the only places that I've found that reliably have non-drinking alcohol (no, you cannot buy the 190 proof Everclear here) are:
Westmarine (by the quart or the gallon),
REI (by the quart only), and
any auto parts store (Yellow Heet only comes in 12oz bottles, do NOT buy the red bottles).
Walmart and other stores claim online that they carry fuel alcohol, but good luck actually getting it.
----> If you can find any significant source of alcohol at a hardware store please let me know.
Everywhere except Westmarine tends to sell quart size and smaller.
The price tends to be about the same per quart (currently ~10.00/qt).
Westmarine sells alcohol in quart and gallon size but you'll most likely see only the gallon size (currently about $25.00/gal) which is cheaper anyway but
please don't try to use a funnel to fill your fuel bottle directly from the gallon can, put the alcohol in something heavier first...trust me...
....and unless you use stainless steel (SS) fuel bottles only store as much fuel in the normal aluminum fuel bottles (BRS, MSR, etc) as you need for a trip, then store the left over alcohol in a steel (or SS) fuel container or a plastic fuel bottle...trust me on that one...if you like your aluminum fuel bottles.
-----> Also, don't be a dummy like me and think that you can use your food funnels as a fuel funnel...it takes forever to get the smell out and some of the additives to denatured alcohol are poisonous by design. Look up the definition of "Denatured Alcohol".
    2. If you think it's smart to use Isopropyl alcohol (90%) go ahead, but I hope you like scrubbing and black lips...just sayin'
    3. Apparently you can convert your Whisperlite to alcohol use (you just cover the correct percentage of the 2 air intake holes) but I haven't found the time to figure out the correct percentage (I get the stove lit, but I have to keep adjusting it to keep it running), and it's just as noisy as a Whisperlite stove on regular fuel. I don't have a tool bench/work area so I'm just farting around when I feel like clearing space for it.
So the Fancee Feast is still a much quieter stove, and convenient...if you can get the alcohol...and you're allowed to use it...so I'll be running a regular camp stove in the non-fire season, but our fire season is currently getting longer and longer.
    4. Aside from camping, I kinda like cooking on the Fancee Feast during power outages anyway (we seem to be having more of them on my block and yes, I have an electric stove...Yeay for clean electricity!!).
Yes you do kinda have to plan how much fuel you use, but if you have 2 (count them, TWO) fancee feast stoves if you run out of fuel on one, you can fuel up and use the second Fancee Feast without letting your food cool...and if you buy the carbon fiber welding blanket for a wick (you can use almost anything for a wick, paper towel, steel wool, but I like carbon fiber...it shrinks or rusts the least) you have enough material for more than one Fancee Feast...and the cans are free :)
    .
I hope this helps someone :)

Just a little tip you might want to add in one of your videos or just to know for yourself. Add a little pinch of salt to your alcohol and that invisible flame magically appears! I just feel better personally knowing where my flame is and it could help prevent accidents if more people were aware of this, even if you are careful it could help others while cooking in daylight :)

DIYers: you can make the center pot stand out of the corrugated stainless sheath from a no-hub plumbing coupling. There used to be a YT how-to video (gone now) ... I laughed at how the guy said "huuuubless plumbin fittin" ... but it turns out to be a great alky stove indeed. Salut from the land of the Coffee Crisp.

Ratified entirely, Shug. I use a DIY Fancy Feast (design courtesy of Hiram Cook) and it's simply awesome. Quiet, integrated pot stand, lights even in sub-freezing temperatures, large fuel capacity, lightweight - you just can't beat it. The main reason I don't use canister stoves is because the fuel is expensive, heavy, creates a lot of waste, and they're unreliable in cold temperatures. Cheers, Shug.

great vids shug, i enjoy watching them and informative, i built a fancy feast based on hiram's design, and i tested it out against THE zelph one, my own did much better on times, i also added and tried 2 different SIMmer rings, 1 made it last 27 minutes, the other 35 mins. also i usED Paper towels in it after seeing hiram's newest test on it, and it did work well, and paper towels cost nearly nothing to use in these.

i will admit to think in about doing an alcohol stove for the light weight "meaning smaller fuel container.". my fuel tank that i like is the jetpower(jetboil) 16 oz fuel tank. i dont know if i really want to starve to death in that time. LOL!!!!
