    Using liquid hand sanitizer is also a great fuel to use. Add some salt to it so it has a little bit of yellow to it so the flame is not completely invisible. :)

    Those are the best DIY alcohol stoves in my opinion, simple and easy to make. I have made quite a few of those and keep one in all my get home bags I carry in my vehicles as well as my shop. Hiram Cook has a YT video on making a simmer ring for the stove entitled "If I were to make a Simmer Ring for the Fancy Feast Stove - Test #2" The stove ran for over an hour on 1 oz. of methanol Yellow HEET and kept the water at a constant 212 degrees.

    Made a simmer ring for my Fancy Feast stove per Hiram Cook's instructions on my lunch break today and tried it out when I got home this evening. I started out with 1 oz. of Yellow HEET and let the stove burn for about 1 minute before placing the simmer ring over the stove and putting a small pot with two cups of room temp. water on the stove and set my timer. Water never came to a full boil, not expected to but I had bubbles on the bottom of the pot and steam started to rise after about five minutes. At about the 25 min. mark, the flame started to die down, I was pretty impressed with the burn time for only using 1 oz. of alcohol and it's certainly long enough to thoroughly heat up a can of food.

    I've made many variations of this stove. They all work just fine, with minor differences in boil times and continued run times. The only thing I would suggest to anyone and everyone is not to make the total height of the stove any longer than the diameter of the base. This is to keep it from tipping.

    I made one out of a nut can and a soup can so it's larger then the cat food can so it can hold more fuel. I don't have carbon felt so I used old thick yarn as my wicking material. have used it to boil water and do a little light cooking during power outages before I got my first isobutane stove

    6thLove this stove. Good tutorial.
    Your carbon felt build looked very solid, but I didn't have any. In place of carbon felt I've used Rockwool or fiberglass batting, tucked evenly between the cans with something like a Popsicle stick. You can pack it as tight as you like, and the inner "can" becomes very solid in the outer, and won't come apart easily. It is harder to get it even than the carbon felt, but it works well once you do.

    Thank you for your video.
    What a great little stove, thanks for the demo.
    We used to have metal tobacco cans that a roll of TP would fit into perfectly. Soak the TP in Brake Line Antifreeze and it would burn wide open for about an hour.
    If the TP is turning black, you're out of fuel.
    Cut the lid from a large apple juice can to place on top of the TP for a regulator.
    The lid is the snuffer and the sides of burning can itself never gets hot. It's easily moved around the ice fishing shack.
    It's a real wet heat though.
    You have to have a rack for your pot too.
    Have a great one.

    Just an FYI, a Vargo 8.5 oz alcohol fuel bottle will fit perfectly into the top of the stove so you have one compact unit, it even has 1 oz. increment measurements on the side of the bottle. Denatured alcohols will work just fine as a substitute for the Yellow HEET, Tractor Supply sell the 32 oz. container of Klean-Strip denatured alcohols for $5.25 cents here locally.

    Nice, informative video. Carbon felt is far from free, and I've had good success using blue shop paper towels as the wick. I fold mine to be slightly below the lip of the cat can so it self extinguishes to minimize burning. It chars a bit at the top edge, but I've used it for at least 20 boils with no issues. I stuff a clean, new blue paper towel inside it in case I ever need to replace it in the field. Just another option to consider.

    A friendly tip, if you use a Vienna sausage can you don't have to cut down the tomatoe paste can. It will be the right height. Besides I don't have a cat lol. The Vienna sausage can holds a little more fuel. P.S. No one near me had carbon felt so I used fiberglass cloth wich was cheaper than the felt on Amazon. I live near a Blains farm and fleet. They sell the fiberglass cloth and the denatured alchohol. Keep the great videos coming!

    I've been experimenting with different designs in portable stoves of all kinds. One can be used for burning wood to make charcoal, while obviously being able to cook/heat.
    Others are made for burning twigs, pinecones, or even bark if that's all that's available.
    My big focus is making them smokeless, as not only is it a nuisance, but it makes it even easier to attract unwanted attention.
    I had worked with alcohol stoves, but quickly realized that with this economic situation, alcohol of any kind is going to be a lot harder to find than some form of wood.

  • @melissahoffman4687
    @melissahoffman4687 Год назад +2

    You can also make a super sized fancy feast stove so if you had to cook for a group of friends, or family that will be useful too. You may need a bigger pot stand to avoid tipping.

    Is there a substitute for the felt?

    • @reloader7sixtwo
      @reloader7sixtwo Год назад +2

      Any material that you can wrap around the smaller can that will fill the space between the two cans can be used, but if it's a flammable material, it will continue to burn after the alcohol is consumed so it will have to be replaced. I've seen people use sand packed between the two cans as a wick and that works fine, and the sand will lock itself into places after a couple uses but you have to always keep it in an upright position. The carbon felt / welding blanket material is the best option, as it's basically indestructible, and the stove can be used hundreds of times with the same piece of carbon felt.

    • @reloader7sixtwo
      @reloader7sixtwo Год назад +3

      You can use the Yellow HEET which is methanol, denatured alcohol is also an excellent stove fuel. Both the HEET and denatured alcohol have some toxicity if ingested, not so much if you spill it on your hands, but wash them if you do. Like any open flame burner, use your stove in a well venerated area. Both fuels average about 16 cents per oz.
