    So many stove videos, Ernie. I used to spend endless hours with Hiram and all of his testing.. we are praying for him. With this virus thing keeping us mostly tucked up, it's great to have yet another stove video to spend time with and it is much appreciated. Keep on keeping on, Doc.

    You should have swapped positions of the stove to rule out draft. Looks like the Fancy Feast stone is taking more of a draft, perhaps allowing the Sprite can stove to sit in the turbulence.

    • @Rspenesmit
      @Rspenesmit Год назад

      I noticed that also, thanks for mentioning it, in my tests the Fancy feast beats this one everytime, so I'm not sure why his tests came out different, it could be his height on the Fancy one as height it Key as Hiram proved.

    In the video it appears that there may be a slight draft from left of the screen. Maybe switch the position of the stoves???

    1:40 Since there is no such thing as "free time" (meaning valueless time, not time with nothing to do), *Time Waiting = Time Wasted.* Therefore, timer should start when stoves are lit, and pot should go on each stove when it blooms. I don't know how long it took your sprite stove to bloom, but I saw the Fancy Feast stove blooming immediately. Maybe it only makes a difference of 30-40 seconds, but when you are comparing two stoves and measuring time to accomplish something, that 30 seconds should count! Much like when comparing wood stoves to alcohol stoves, and the tester starts with his twigs all cut and trimmed to size. Wait, you didn't pick them up looking like that, aren't you going to account for the prep time?
    In that case, let's compare alcohol stoves against electric hot plates, but not count the time and expense of running electrical hookup out to the middle of the forest.
    Upon reflection, this criticism seems harsh. It was not meant to be. Your Sprite stove is very good, and I'm sure you are proud of it. It's smaller than, and lighter than the Fancy Feast, and most other stoves. It just upsets me when testers don't take all time factors into their calculations. IMHO, timing should start when the stoves start.

    • @Rspenesmit
      @Rspenesmit Год назад

      I agree and I did not care overall for his test, he seemed to favor his Sprite can from the beginning, it also looked like some air coming in from the Fancy feast side of the screen affected it a little. either way I've made and tested both and the fancy feast has yet to be beaten, it's tied with a Trangia knockoff on amazon both are great stoves, but this one is light & flimsy and a light can won't hold up to larger heavier pots or pans.

    I join in saying the leftward draft and the jump edit waiting for the Sprite Stove to bloom significantly handicapped the Fancee Feast stove. Shenanigans! :-). Rematch! Rematch! Rematch! “How much time” the stove takes to boil water should start from lighting.

    • @Rspenesmit
      @Rspenesmit Год назад

      Exactly right, he favored the Sprite can from the start, I think he just wanted to make a video on something new, but this one is a Failure, Hiram would have tested both together and called him out on it and showed how it was done properly, also height on the Fancy feast is key.

  • @camojoe83
    @camojoe83 4 года назад +2

    So, when you say "ounce by weight", do you mean you used 1 oz (28g) of fuel, or the 24 grams or so that a fluid oz of alcohol fuel weighs?
    I did a bunch of basic BTU maths on my stove designs recently, good fun. I figured the efficiency of most of them i have on the table in a fairly raw fashion with some basic relationship between BTU required for water mass vs btu potential vs burn and boil times.. nerd it up!

  • @Oldsparkey
    @Oldsparkey 4 года назад

    Sprite had a better flame pattern then the Cat Can. The cat can would be a lot sturdier then the sprite stove. Less to worry about when it's packed away. One thing for sure the cat stove needs a wind screen around it. Both stoves would be more efficient with a wider bottom pot.
    Any one out there with a Vargo Titanium Hexagon wood stove looking for a additional heat source. A version of the Cat Can stove when made with a Vienna sausage can , a full sized Tomato paste can and carbon felt is a great additional and quick substitute heat source in it. Follow Ernie's instructions on how to make the cat food can but don't trim the tomato Paste cans height. The extra combined height of the two cans is what make it work so good in the Vargo wood burner.

    • @danielkutcher5704
      @danielkutcher5704 4 года назад

      This is a fundamental problem with attempting to make an alcohol stove do what it's not good at: heating small pots. There are more potential variables built into what Ernie calls a "cat food can" stove, specifically, how many, and how big are the notches at the bottom of the tomato paste can, and the location and diameter of the hole in the side, and, as someone mentioned, don't wait for a stove to bloom if it doesn't need to. You can put a pot right on the Fancee Feest (Fancy Feast) stove even before you light it! Try that with almost any other alcohol stove.
      The one I use is called the "Supercat".
      It may be the lightest stove that will actually hold a large pot, and only requires a paper hole punch to make.

    I think you need to redo this test. You can definitely see a decent draft coming from the left to right. The cat stove was blocking the draft the entire time for the Sprite stove. Also as another mentioned you should start the test once the fastest stove gets to a full bloom. In the field you wouldn't wait the extra time for the other stove to light up. Not saying it would change the winner but would show better results.

    For the Fancy feast stove if you replace the metal tomato paste can with an aluminum coffee drink can you’ll save 0.4oz.
    The sprite will our perform the FF until the temperature drops. The FF is good down below -20f.
    I’d like to see the comparison at different cold temperature say 50° down. Of course you’ll have to wait until next winter. 😊

      The Supercat stove, at least with water from my night time hot water bottle which I use while hammocking in the winter is also good down to at least +5 degrees F. Generally, from experimenting, I've found that larger holes promote fuel/air mixing, providing a more sustainable cold weather flame. The Fancy Feast stove is essentially a wide open stove, so it's no surprise that it's an excellent cold weather performer.
