A lot of young people don't know this about the fox body. When in 87 when Ford up the horsepower it was only the mustang GT's that were on the cover of every magazine. When they could not keep up with the demand and they had a LX models just sitting on the showroom floor that's when Ford with the help of some magazines started the claim that the LX was faster claiming it was much lighter than the GT. At the track we did not see that. Every 5.0 that was fast we're all GT's. Finally one of the magazines had taken a GT and a LX to scales and it was less than a hundred. It was later and 88 when the news had gotten out that Ford started the rumor to be able to sell more cars since they were not able to keep up with the GT. I just thought I'd share the story with the young people on here. And let me go on and say it did not matter to any of us on which car you had. When you had a problem or broke down at the track everybody was there to help. I did notice Ford people we're very quick to jump in and help one another. In the mid-90s when Chevy came out with their new Camaro you just did not see those guys helping one another like the Ford guys were all doing.
Ahh! Now I know why I beat one in a race in my typical bolt-on/15% reduced supercharger pulley having '05 Mini Cooper S a few years ago haha I can't brag as much now. I thought it would've been way more power back then when we lined up. Not too bad though I suppose given the age of technology!

I remember the first thing you did with one of these was K&N filter, pull the air silencer out, and add a few degrees of timing for a quick 15 or so rear wheel horsepower.
@@morepower-4.6 I was being facetious, it was merely a dramatization of bolt on mods and their perceived horsepower as the original poster brought up the famous K&N air filter. What the hell is a h/c/l car anyhow? Is that some sort of forum jargon for heads/cam/lower end?
@@dexter131 That was a hell of a dramatization. I was talking about the easy 3 step hp increase everybody did. You'd go from around 193 RWHP to about 205 to 210 at the wheels in most cases. No one with stock heads was touching 300 at the tires without a blower :) or nitrous
Just put in 3.55 gears and advance the timing to 13 degrees..it will look stock but what a difference and fun car it would be..Old school tricks from back in the day..thats all i would do to this super rare beauty without affecting its value..invisible mods..
I miss my 1991 Notch LX 5.0! At the time ford dealers had a hard time moving these so you could buy them dirt cheap. I much preferred the notch to the fastback..... I alway wondered what this 5.0 made to the wheels so thank you for sharing!!
I'm the original owner of an '88 black on gray (Ford called it smoke) 5 speed notchback. It has always been garage kept with a car cover over it. Never modified other than a Ford Motorsports 140 mph speedometer, Hyper Tech module and low temperature thermostat both of which allowed me to advance the timing somewhat, and a dealer installed Ford Motorsports M2300C rear wheel disc brake conversion kit. It still rides on Gatorbacks (I've got ten Gatorbacks in the garage). I ordered the car with a stereo delete because Ford didn't offer a CD player and I had Bryn Mawr Stereo install an Alpine 7901 with 6X9 JBL T545's in the rear and MB Quart woofers in the doors and MB Quart tweeters in the dash with adjustable crossovers. Sound Stream D60 amp for the MB Quarts and a Sound Stream D100 for the JBL's. 121,000 miles and looks as new. Ash tray door still works. I ordered it without a rear window defroster because I didn't intend to drive in the rain or snow. Still has the factory mufflers. I ordered it with air conditioning, power widows and door locks. I did order it with the 2.73 gears because I was into top speed and highway racing. It will hit 150 mph in 4th gear after several miles, LOL. Seemed and was a fast car 32 years ago and I used to beat cars costing 5 times as much. I paid $10,600 and it had a window sticker of $13,100.

Had a 89 lx hatchback new, ran low 14s back then, good for the times, to anybody under 40 yrs old that was a lot of horsepower back then, I had a 1 ton with a 460 I think had 180 horsepower
Incredible to see how low the numbers are. The Saleens with the 3.55 gears and Racecraft suspension showed the potential. The 93 Cobra with the gt40 heads showed how much better they were than the E7 heads. Now an original low mile Foxbody brings big money. They were nostalgic but stock they handle horrible, brakes are pathetic, and power wise the smaller displacement cars were just as fast. Thanks to companies like LMR you can find one and build it the way you want.
225 hp, 300 torque.....That was stock 1989 mustang GT.....I had one....and it was still 235 hp, and 315 torque with 125,000 on odometer......But I added a K and N filter with fender intake, mild cam, and series 40 F masters muffs, 2.5 inch piping, no cats. The pre 1989 Mustangs all use "speed density" instead of mass air flow meter.....so modding a 1988 mustang requires more work than just bolting on aftermarket parts. @@bartekschacht Generally these cars respond well between 12 and14 degrees BTC initial timing. You have to take out the spud connector before you try to time it as well. I always ran 13 degrees on mine and it ran very very well.
@@bartekschacht Initial timing is basically the timing you can set when the car is at idle vs. total timing which is different. It was the best sleeper car because it didn’t look all aerodynamic and everything. They were light as heck. My ‘89 GT was scary in the rain.
My bone stock 1993 GT put down 221 to the rear wheels. And that was with 61,000 or so I cant remember it's been years. But if I still had the dyno chart..... wait a minute I can go back to the shop it's all saved on his hard drive. Some where built better than others and so made more power. Usually different numbers come down to whatever variants that come into play like altitude, barometer, temperature was it a dyno-jet, etc.
I still remember buying my first mustang. In 1986 Ford went to fuel injection in their mustangs. It wasn't until 1987 that they got it right. They change the heads. And that's when all hell broke out. Every single magazine at the time featured the mustang GT and it's new horsepower numbers. I had decided I wanted one but that was not an easy thing to accomplish. every dealership I went to did not have any and would not even take orders for the new ones that were coming in. I had tried one last place. When I jumped out of my pickup truck the salesman must have been hiding in the bushes. I don't think it was humanly possible for him to engage me and to ask if he could help me. I looked around a lot and said to him it doesn't look like it. Then he asked me what was I looking for and I told him a 1987 mustang GT. He said I was in that they had two identical ones and they were both red and one had a sunroof and one did not. That was the only difference. He walked me around back where they had them and I pointed to the one without the sunroof. He said let me get the keys and a tag so we could take it for a test drive. I told him that was not necessary I was there to buy the car and did not need a test drive. One hour later I walked out of the dealership with my first mustang. It only took me two weeks before I went to the track. And that's when my obsession got started with mustang. Let me just say if I had known about the Buick Grand Nationals and could have found one I definitely would have went down that road. As good as the mustang was it could not hang with the Grand Nationals. Every time you would race one at the track you would be halfway down the track and the Grand national nowhere to be seen. All of a sudden you could hear that turbo catching up with you and going past you like you were sitting still. The one thing I can say about being a mustang owner and that I have met some very fine people and made some lifelong friends.

A 70.5 inch belt, no intake silencer, 16 deg timing, 1/4 tank of 93 perhaps with some octane boost, and ice the intake. 3.08 gears were mandatory. This was great. Had an 89 lx 5.0 fox body hatchbach. Such a great car. Second life of the musclecar era. Cant believe the musclecar horsepower wars its lead too. So much fun.
I had a 92 LX hatch with the same running gear. Great car. I miss it.
LX hatch is my favorite model. I have always wanted to buy one but every one I have come across is either rusted out beyond repair or ones that have pretty bad frame damage. One day maybe I'll get my wish lol🤞
Owned two 5.0. Red 91 lx hatch then bought a new reef blue 93 lx notch after the 91 was totaled from a tow truck hitting me. I think the lx notch in reef blue is the best looking combination
You say “coupe”. I say “notch back”.
Well Ford called them 2 door Sedans, so....
...
Absolutely gorgeous. It ought to be in a museum.
I have the same, black on black 5.0, 5 speed, but a 1988. Was the first car I put on the road,in 2004 at 120xxxkm, it's now at 230xxxkm. I have no regrets.
that's about right.. it was the torque that was the real treat on 5L cars.. to think that now we have Coyotes doing 200 hp more... unreal.. beautiful car
Great car, bring it up to date with more power. Needs the boost, kick. Past is the past, today’s car are fast and more power. Good video!
What are the plans for this coupe? Just keep it stock? Super clean! 👍
Ahh! Now I know why I beat one in a race in my typical bolt-on/15% reduced supercharger pulley having '05 Mini Cooper S a few years ago haha I can't brag as much now. I thought it would've been way more power back then when we lined up. Not too bad though I suppose given the age of technology!
That is a beautiful old Fox. Love how clean and new it looks.
Beautiful car, I wish my 89 LX coupe looked as good, but not with 102,000 miles. They are one owner miles though as I bought it new. Maybe some day I’ll get it looking that good again. It is black and that’s a great color for notchbacks.
I remember the first thing you did with one of these was K&N filter, pull the air silencer out, and add a few degrees of timing for a quick 15 or so rear wheel horsepower.
The flowmaster dual exhaust was good for another 20 easy. Get the chip for the computer and you made 400 to the wheels before you knew it.
Dexter Schray ummm, No. not without a supercharger or a stroker motor!! Even an h/c/I car only puts down around 300 rwhp
Dexter Schray heads/cam/intake-
@@dexter131
That was a hell of a dramatization.
I had a 92 5.0 LX hatchback back in the day. I really loved that car.
I have the same car, but red on red with a few things done to it✅
My dad’s 92 notch which he got brand new when I was in third gradeX with the ponies and 5-speed he had up until 2017. The car had over 405 thousand miles on it basically bone stock except for parts that inevitably wore out overtime. It was fun up until the day he sold it. I learned to drive the 5-speed in it.
I remember as a kid the fox body mustangs where considered bad ass. The game has changed so much since then.
Beautiful, preserved example of a legendary car. How long before some meat head stuffs an LS in it?
Would love to see more of this coupe PLEASE don’t modify it
I love that car!!!!!!!!!!!! Mustangs for life!!!
I love mustangs thats why i own a 92 foxbody gt convertible 5.0
Love my 86’GT. Owned her since day 1. Used to be my daily driver. Now she hangs out in the temp controlled garage!
I enjoy those stock cars from the 90's maybe because that was my glory days🤷♂️
For the love of God please don’t modify that car
I’d really love to see a newer version of a notch-back. The newer Camaro, Mustang, Charger came out. Why not a Fox body?
Plus the bummer I think, and the reason most cars are bigger these days, is I believe crash test ratings.
Timathy Ploof yes...all in the name of safety.😒
But a new one with all the ghey tech and safety garbage would weigh 3900lbs.
Been saying this since the first throwback Mustang, they've done the first gen Mustang justice with the last 2 gens. We need a new FOX!
I miss my 92' LX 5.0 emerald green, white top convertible. Took me from 18-26, best years ever.
Beautiful car. Makes me miss my first Fox (88 Notch) I've never kept them stock and recent years have even led me to the dark side of LS swapping my current 92 LX hatch but I'd love to have another sticker, especially one this clean!
That's a dream car! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Damn sure is!
My identical car but a 93, not stock though
@@dngendron I have a 93 black on black too. 331 turbo but I have all parts to put it back stock.
@@arturo5819 I kept all my stock parts too down to the injectors but my stock motor is now a 347 and lives in my 1988 BMW 325IS (also not selling ever😂) but I do have it.
Bit of a time capsule. I like it.
I wanted a manual liftback 5.0 lx back in the 90’s so bad. Couldn’t afford it at the time unfortunately.
Its a TREAT to me to find these stock these days!
I remember like it was yesterday when I was looking at the last of two brand new 93's ... both were LX 5.0s with stickers in the window for 13,000 and some change!
Man, have times changed :(
Did you take the air silencer out of the fender when you did this ? The sound it makes without it is beautiful
We did not but that's something we might do in the future!
@@latemodelrestoration it makes a gigantic difference... I'm surprised its still there, lay on the ground to reach up and just wiggle it off.. I did that back in 1990. LOL ... Sounds incredible.
Pretty quick lil car for the hp, allways been a camaro guy, owned an lt1 1994 6 speed.but allways loved the mustang as well... nice lil trunk car.
They were lots of fun back then. A few mods, good gas, and timing advance, definitely help.
There's a greenish teal one sitting behind iron fencing and some roof flash pallets out here in watts ca, the vin is partly visible being blocked by a card 1FACP40E, it's a manual, cloth and notchback it's been back there since I moved here in 2002 so I'd probably believe the odometers 63k is accurate. I want to make them an offer what's it worth it's mint just staring to fade.
Reminds me of a black 85 LX 5.0 5 speed notch I drove in 86 or 87. It did have the heavy duty suspension option which Ford mandated half way through the 1985 model year for any LX with the 5.0 option.
Remember kids horsepower is what sells the car but torque is what gets it down the road
I had a 91 and it was so much fun for whipping donuts in.
Yeah ok
Had a 89 lx hatchback new, ran low 14s back then, good for the times, to anybody under 40 yrs old that was a lot of horsepower back then, I had a 1 ton with a 460 I think had 180 horsepower
Pat H You are correct.
I love the look of the factory exhaust on these cars. Man these cars aged well.
I love that look too. My favorite tailpipes to date on any car. I remember being a teen seeing the 85 when it was released. I was hooked
Ahhhh, now I just want to get out my 88 Gt with factory Troof. Bring on summer
To clean to touch.
I would love to see more of a car now I will love to have that car
That's pretty darn good for a 225hp rated engine.
I would love to own that Coupe!
Me too
225 hp, 300 torque.....That was stock 1989 mustang GT.....I had one....and it was still 235 hp, and 315 torque with 125,000 on odometer......But I added a K and N filter with fender intake, mild cam, and series 40 F masters muffs, 2.5 inch piping, no cats. The pre 1989 Mustangs all use "speed density" instead of mass air flow meter.....so modding a 1988 mustang requires more work than just bolting on aftermarket parts. Anyhow...thanks for sharring
Can’t believe these are fetching the numbers they are..my hopes of getting a clean one like this are very slim 😩
For being stock it actually looked really healthy on the dyno. Sweet video!
Is it for sale??? Had a 93 X- CHP Mustang... What a car.... but carefull no brakes.....
WOW that's a beautiful car! I have a 93 black on black
I had a 93 same exact car...I miss it so much!
I'd like to see what timing and a filter will do for it. Everyone had that. at least.
Hi. I have an 87' 5.0 MT Fox Convert and want to set a new timing on it. What timing would you suggest to set? I have this car here in Germany and over here there are almost nobody that know anything about this cars. My car has just an bigger throttle body. The rest is stock. Our fuel is 95 ROZ Octane....also I can put 98 and 102 Octane in it. Don't know how to compare it with your fuel. Maybe you have a little advise for me which timing I should set?
I would be very thankful!
@@bartekschacht Generally these cars respond well between 12 and14 degrees BTC initial timing. You have to take out the spud connector before you try to time it as well. I always ran 13 degrees on mine and it ran very very well.
@@Anthony-rv3hr Thank you very much! Im gonna try this. What does "initial" timing means?
@@bartekschacht Initial timing is basically the timing you can set when the car is at idle vs. total timing which is different. Remeber to set your base timing with the spud connector OUT or you will not get good results. If you don't know what that is, you can google it and I'm sure there's a RUclips video out there to show you.
@@Anthony-rv3hr thanks!!! I know about the spud. Have seen also a good video from lmr. Do I have just to set this initial timing or also the total timing to get it perfectly running?
Those foxbody 5.0 always feels like it had more hp then 225... We use to put a set of slicks on them bone stock and dump the clutch at 5500 rpm and red line it... And man that bad boy felt like 300 hp.. Lol.. Miss those days..
Its the massive torque and broad powerband and light weight that makes then quick. Theyre faster than they appear on paper ppl thats never driven or ridden in one wouldnt understand ecspecially the younger generation
@@michaelharris748 they SMOKED 350 camaros and transams
Joe Nobody Yep, I thought my brother was crazy trading in his 305 Formula for an ‘88 GT. Then, I rode in it. And then, he was out smokin the shit out of brand new Vettes.
I picked up an 89 vert 5.0 LX; it's all stock & not hacked up or butchered.
2800 pound car..... They are a lot of fun !
They were a little heavier than that. :)
@@331Grabber I had one, that's what it weighed with the spare tires out Skinnys and slicks.
Love that coupe. Would be cool if y'all did an in-car driving video .👍
Our Aussie version has the same engine/driveline/ECU and makes about 50hp less to the wheels. Your dynos seem to be very friendly over there.
I miss my 91 ssp coupe with 160 MPH on the dash
Same here, mine was a 90 ssp tx I miss it, 160 speedo, oil cooler ect, durable reliable car.
I switched sides with an lsx Cadillac now. 😒

Find those old stock late 80s drag class videos. Only two cars were used successfully, Buick Turbo and 5.O. The mustang usually won. It was the best format back then. Still is today for pure lightweight performance.
That's a super clean fox.
Would that be the same for a 1992 Lincoln Mark VII ??
I just saw a recent stock dyno on a 89 5.0 make 226 228 whp and 296 torque
A 70.5 inch belt, no intake silencer, 16 deg timing, 1/4 tank of 93 perhaps with some octane boost, and ice the intake. 3.08 gears were mandatory. Detach the front swaybar and/or move to a set of 90/10 front struts. Helped if the driver was light, and you could pull all of the seats if you were serious. Slicks would put this thing solidly into the 13's.
Makes me miss my 93 coupe. Granted my Cobra makes 400 more rwhp, but the coupe just felt like home.
Favorite Stang of all time.
Y not bump timing to 14 and toss in k&n? It would still be stock.
As an owner of 13 mustangs and 2 lightnings.5 mark 8s and 4 mark 7s,I’ve oddly crept into the Vw diesel market although still a Ford lover my 2.0 diesel can make 200 horse and 355 torque and get 40-55 mpg for $500,6 speed dsg transmissions ……stick shifts don’t even try….newer mustangs and newer turbo drivetrains swapped into the old body styles…yes please
What did ford advertise that car to have?
