When I complained about unloading the dishwasher to a friend she told me that she timed herself and it only took three minutes! She said what feels better taking 3 mins and getting done or thinking about it all day. That was 15 years ago and to this day I curse her name and unload the dishwasher:)

OMG, I just told myself this morning. I hate unloading the dishwasher, but I end up just filling the sink with dirty dishes until I'm finally motivated to empty and refill the dishwasher! This morning I emptied the dishwasher and threw in the few dirty mugs that were sitting in the sink while I was waiting for my coffee to brew. It literally took me 2-3 minutes. I'm definitely committing myself to staying on top of this, as it's the thing I neglect the most in my kitchen, and tends to spiral into a much messier room as a result!

It's so true! I struggle with depression, and when I allow the house to get out of hand, it just builds up to a giant chore that could take 1-2 days to fully address. In the last few weeks, I've been telling myself that I just need to get 1-2 things accomplished each evening, no matter how small. It did make a difference, but this weekend I went crazy and got a lot more done. My main level is so much tidier (still needs a deep clean, but most things are put away), and it made a HUGE difference for my mood! Anything is better than nothing. Especially because once you start, it really helps keep you motivated to do something else the next day or next time you have a few minutes.

As a mother to many, I’ve had several “tidies” that I’ve done thru the years. I’ve always had my dishes done (always by hand) by the end of my day, sink washed and the coffee set to brew on auto in the morning. The table was set for breakfast as the last kitchen chore of the evening. Always pull the covers down to the foot of the bed, leaving the bed to “air” until after morning dishes are done and I take time to make the bed and tidy the bedroom.
My children are grown but I continue my routines which makes things so easy for me. I do enjoy your videos!

The other day, I timed how long it took me to make my bed. I was astonished that it took only a minute and a half. It was then that I said to myself "OK self, tell me again why you keep the bed messy!" Seriously, a minute and a half is all it took! Why the heck am I not doing it? After that, the bed was always made.

I love that term “putting the kitchen to bed”! I have started doing this over the last couple years and WOW, what a change. I'm so NOT a bed maker, but I recently watched Kelly's video re: making yourself into a morning person/early riser. One of the things she says is that it helps to have something you're going to do once you get out of bed. So you're not just lying in bed away playing on your phone. I've been thinking that my first "to do" when I wake up should be making my bed. I know that I love seeing a made bed, I just tend to skip it because 1) I'm always rising at the last possible minute, and 2) I'm lazy. I own that, but I love the idea of making it a first thing to do that will get me going in the morning!

I realize that my thoughts stop me from cleaning. Too big. Too overwhelming. The timer is a great idea. 15 min. When I was sick with depression I used to use the kettle as my timer. Ok while I wait for my cup of tea I’ll get dressed. Ok while I wait for the kettle I’ll wash a couple of dishes. This really helped. Now that I am feeling better and doing better I still don’t love to clean however when I allow myself to just jump into something it feels great. When I hesitate It’s my negative thoughts that get in the way. So now I’m adopting your 15 min timer into my day. Little changes go a long way. When I first started meditating I commited a time everyday and only 5 min commitment. Gradually worked up to 30 min to help heal my brain. Worked wonders. Thanks for your inspiring videos🙏🏻❤️🙌

I'm at the beginning of my tidy journey. Instead of the clean sink, my start was to make the bed, just overall more satisfying and therefore energizing. My swift cleans are first thing in the morning instead of at night. One of my big problems is that I am a bit of a "community" cleaner. My journey has been a lot like Kallie’s. Another big AHA! for me was realizing that I needed to develop more of a a “tidy as you go” habit. I noticed that if I let things slide, then like Kallie says it looks like a bigger job than it really is. Then, and this is the key part, I tended to add to the mess by not putting things away as I used them (often using the excuse I was “too busy”) resulting in a bigger and bigger mess. It’s become a combined habit…tidy as I go and if I notice a bit of a mess developing, doing a quick tidy. I’ve also developed the habit of scanning a space before I leave it. As well, if everything has an easily accessible home then “tidy as you go” is much more likely to happen.

    • @lmack6596
      @lmack6596 2 года назад +2

Yes!! Me too. I'm better than I used to be, and generally the messes don't develop as often (or get anywhere as near as big) as they used to, but still there are times (when I'm ill, tired, or have too much going on) they do start to appear again. But when they do - I'm no longer waiting for enough time/energy to clean it up 'perfectly'. I'll just chip away at it. Sometimes I don't even have the energy for a 5min pick up - but I try to do just one thing.... It helps!

The thing that tipped the scale for me was a golden retriever and a wood floor. I had little kids on the floor all day and..golden tumbleweeds😂 After adding that before bed, we tried to clean our “main space” after swiftering the floor. Then eventually added the sink and then other rooms. Once the kids got older they too would clean their room before bed just like we were. It was probably 3-5 years but so worth it when the kids activities took over in middle school and high school! One step at a time. No one is perfect and habits take practice 😅

This is too true! I’ve purchased a timer for this very reason. A couple of times a day I put it on five minutes and everyone have to tidy. When time is up it’s totally fine if you’re not done. This keeps our house tidy enough! Almost perfect, actually.
I also vacuum for three minutes a day. Again with a timer on. I do the “highways” of our apartment, no vacuuming under furniture or in corners or anything. Keeps dust, fur and crumbs on a totally acceptable level even though we live in tight quarters - four people and a long haired cat on just shy of 600 sqf.
Together with keeping on top of dishes and doing a Flylady swish & swipe each day (one (1) minute to wipe toilet ring and bowl, and bathroom sink) our house is almost always company ready. Takes me almost no time at all. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just needs to get done.

So now I still do a timed 15 minute alarm clean daily, but the little basics are so much less than 5 minutes that I stop the “I can’t spare 5min” talk!! I just do the tidy because it is better than doing nothing! So true!!❤️
Your videos are so inspired and wonderful. I really enjoy your positivity and being open to becoming the someone you want to be and proud of yourself!
Plus you are setting such good examples to your children..they shouldn’t live in mess. Pride in self and place-they are learning such valuable lessons from you as you care for self and place. Love this.

I am a messy perfectionist and your Video came At the perfect time! I only recently noticed how deeply perfectionism is rooted in my family, especially the women in my family. My mum's favourite quote was "if you dont do it completly then there is no point in starting"
Whew that left me overwhelmed when I started living on my own. I am chronically ill and sometimes I just cant complete a task even though I want to so Bad, so I am trying to unlearn that and apply your wisdom, thank you

I loved this. I have adopted the kitchen sink method. Also scientific research has shown if you go to bed with a cluttered room you don't sleep well. Thank you for all of your tips. I'm definitely going to try our the 15 min method because having a teenager and 2 small boys that I'm going to homeschool I believe this will help me keep a cleaner home

Yep all true, Your tips really work,I’m adopting “the clean kitten sink”, and tidy kitchen counters at night so the coffee making and morning meditating is easy going. I also adopted the idea that” if it takes literally a minute...just put the item away, or in its place. I tend to shuffle things around, putting it in its place the first time eliminates needless piles. Thank you Kallie!

Just came here to say that Kallie has changed my life and habits deeply. I follow all the perfect extreme clean mommy bloggers but none of them explain how to make the perfect clean house happen. Kallie, I am deeply appreciative of your channel and life advice. My kitchen dinning space is open concept and i am 0% stressed out when it becomes a mess because i know how to pick it up because of you. The other day my friend ( who doesn’t often come to my house) walked in and said “ omg why is it so clean in here” i said “ it’s not, it’s just tidy”.
And being tidy makes you wanna clean more.
    Anyways. THANK YOU KALLIE !

I love your videos… they are so helpful! One thing I regularly find with my favorite RUclipsrs on organization, cleaning, declutttering gurus is that many are either SAHM or WFHM who are home more to take advantage of those few pockets of minutes throughout the day. What are the BEST/MOST EFFECTIVE things that a work outside the home mom can do to get a great impact with perhaps a smaller amount of time? I wake an hour before the kiddo wakes to tackle home things and prep dinner before work and then have roughly 3 hours in the evening for family time/dinner/house needs items.

Those little pickups and small pockets of time also greatly impact when you do have time to deep clean. If you're managing the light stuff better it won't build up as much and you can get to the deep stuff faster. I find if I have to do a ton of picking up, sorting and just general maintenance of a space before I have to deep clean it, the longer it takes, the more frustrated I get and the more worn out I feel when I do finally have enough time to devote to a space.
Thanks for the great tips, as always!

😀This makes so much sense to me and totally fits into the idea of using Pomodoros to plan your time that is so popular these past few years. 😳 I also needed a good motivating kick in the pants to get started today, so thanks for that! LOL! I don't always use Pomodoros, but it helps me to get started on the day--for sure. The thing that is cool about doing Poms is that you can set your time how it works best for you: ⏰ work minutes/break minutes (50/10), (45/15), (25/5), (20/10), or whatever. If you add 5 minutes to your break time, then you can do a quick tidy during your Pomodoro breaks.
For example, I'm not a SAHM but I have mad respect for y'all! I'm an online grad student, so I'm basically working from home right now--studying is my work. Getting started and knowing where to start can be hard when you don't have somewhere to go as many found out working from home recently. So, if I can agree with myself to study for say 45 minutes then have a 15-minute break...I'm at least getting started. After 45 minutes I'm ready to get up from the computer and stretch, for sure.
That 15-minute break is just long enough to have a bathroom break, empty the dishwasher, and grab a quick drink/snack. Moving around just enough to clean for a few minutes also gets the blood flowing and stretches stiff muscles from sitting at a desk. Then, I do another Pom, but next time I start a load of laundry during the break.
Whatever it is that you need to do, Pom breaks have turned out to be a great time to do a small chore. Later, I have less to worry about doing around the house, too, so I don't have to clean for a big chunk of time after studying all day. This is exactly what Kallie is talking about, and it really works! ❤ Thanks again for the reminder to just get started! Have a great week, y'all! 😀🙏

This video gave me an aha moment too. When i was a kid and we would watch tv, we would always race around during the commercials - setting the table, getting teeth brushed - little 5 minute tasks - and I remember always loving being able to get things done in micro bursts like that. Even now, i will set an alarm to do a clean up or work burst, just because I find it motivating. As always, i love your videos Kallie!

I am not sure if it is just me, but when Kallie speaks to the audience she always seems to assume only women are watching. As a single guy, I need a lot of these tips too, but I always feel like I am doing something wrong by watching this channel. I promise most of the tips on this channel work even if you have an X and Y chromosome. BTW, Kallie, I am so grateful for you making me realize I am not the only person who struggles to keep a tidy house. We inherited my great grandfather’s home and have been going through cleaning and decluttering. I am having fun going through his belongings and finding time to redecorating my new home. My nephew has his old office. It was mainly my mom and I cleaning, painting, and building furniture for my nephew. It took time (2 months) but now I have a fire under my laziness! I always find time for cleaning when I am experiencing down time! My room is currently being used to hold the boxed furniture and belongings but I finally had time to put my in the dressers and closet I had just cleaned!😏

Your video about making horizontal surfaces tidy has had an impact on my daily habits. I have lots of counter space in my kitchen which at times has all been a hot mess. If I just take time to concentrate on even one section makes the space so much more enjoyable to wake up to. I have also adopted some of the Swedish Death organization, which has taken overwhelming to a daily conscious effort to purge things that I no longer need or want. Thank you!

Aww... We Have those exact same dimensions for our bedroom and my husband works in it too. Our bathroom is almost half the size, twice as much as we need. It is part storage. I feel your pain living in 850 sq ft. Four daughters here, all at home, all the time. We're either cleaning or making huge messes constantly. I do need to buckle back down on the sink trick. Spending half an hour after dinner to really get the kitchen in good shape is very worth it.
