I met Elvis in Las Vegas Feb 1970 at a after party at the Hilton. He sang this song on the piano and brought tears to some of the 50 people there. I’m from Adelaide Australia and I was on my honeymoon. I’m 86 and that concert/after party feels like it was yesterday. When he walked into the room everyone went quiet girls were staring guys were speechless! He was a true gentleman and went around the room shook hands with everybody and my wife got a kiss(she was never the same..lol ) What a night!!
Hearing your story echos everything I heard and read about Elvis. Finished a biography on Elvis last month, It's full of testimony relating similar experiences. I cherish these stories for they reinforce my affection and respect for him. As a youth I was under the spell for obvious reason but now I'm in awe at his accomplishments and legacy. Should say this lockdown has allowed me to rekindle with this unique artist. I wish it was under different circumstances but thanks to You Tube I have discovered new material and it's been a revelation since. I found this quote by Norman Lebrecht '' It seems almost inexplicable that the human race, with its ravenous appetite for entertainment, should have failed over so many decades to produce another Callas and Elvis". This was my second record, the first single that I ever purchased in March, 1967. Sadly it barely scraped the top 40 at the time rising to #33. I saw Elvis 4 times...went to Graceland Oct 77....his Uncle Vester still worked the gate. He was kind and told us stories of fans at the gate. Oct 3rd....at dusk..coming from the direction of the cemetery...the sky lit up with blue police lights...and they led two white hearses through the gates...there was only us and a handful of people...we were there when Elvis and his Mothers bodies were laid to rest in his Meditation Garden. Home forever at Graceland.
