Also, Lionel Richie deserves a hugeeee standing ovation for his role here. Hosted the AMAs, won prizes, went to the studio, kept solving problems, made everyone feel at ease, made them laugh, kept guiding people, SANGGGG, and stayed until the very end (and of course he co wrote the song!!!!). That man did A LOTTTT and we do not appreciate that enough.
Lionel looks like that classmate in high school who made sure the other classmate was able to copy the answer. He is such a nice person to everybody the way he looks out for them. Bruce (I love him a lot!), Lionel, Michael, Steve Perry (just because he is my all-time favorite), and Kenny Rogers (makes me cry watching the documentary) are in my top 5!
If you watched this video after watching it from Netflix, give me a thumbs up. You are not alone! I love this song and I even watched the latest version with the new generation of artists.
It’s great. And encouraging to see a room of superstars being insecure in each other’s presence; everyone has idols, everyone feels less-than next to someone. Just be you.
Favorite part for sure was learning that Stevie Wonder showed Dylan what to sing by singing it impersonating Dylan’s own voice. In the nearly dropping the ball category, Al Jarreau sure jumped the gun tying one on. You can see his eyes looking misty and distant even in the choruses, which were done before the solos! You can see in the video that unlike most soloists, there’s a slight jump cut where they must have had to edit his solo parts from multiple takes, thus his head movement doesn’t match in the edit. (My guess is the poor guy was probably about to lose his shit in a room with all those soul giants. Can’t say I blame him, just imagine.)
Let me get this right. Lionel Richie wrote this song with Michael Jackson, hosted the American Music Awards that night, (where he won multiple awards), and then brought all of these amazing artists together to record this song? In the same night? Are you freaking kidding me?? This answers the question as to who the hardest working man in showbusiness is. Much respect Lionel Richie! And to all of the other brilliant artists who helped create this magical song!
Where’s the time … listening now in 2025 … back then, no smartphones, no AI, famous artists on posters & gadgets, recording music on tape 😊 … from my experience, the 80’s was a time with a lot of creativity and emotions. Having this song still on a small record and on the back side, the song Grace (Quincy J)

I Agree!!!! Today’s singers will never know these greats and legends. They sang and weren’t out for the fame (though it naturally came). They sang because they loved to sing!
Saludos!! 😉
Aqui do Brasil. Obrigada, obrigada, e obrigada!
I completely comprehend Diana Ross's sentiments when she sheds tears and expresses her desire for that night to never end. She, along with everyone present, was acutely aware that it marked a singular moment in their lives and in the broader scope of humanity. It is a legacy destined to endure for generations.
At 11 years old I remember watching this and being so excited to buy the album. I must have listened to it 1000 times in my life. When RUclips came out I was listening to it again.

I cried watching the Netflix documentary. What came across is the humanity and humility of these incredible artists who came together and created something special. Amazing! ✨
That’s the way the world “used” to be. Things change; and not always for the better. This song brought us back together for a moment, but then is was back to the same ole things…
Finished watching the Netflix documentary some hours ago and I realized he(Micheal Jackson) and Lionel Richy wrote this beautiful piece and Quincy brought them all together. This is amazing work will forever be remembered
Agreed. For me, it's pairing Dionne Warwick with Willie Nelson. Not a tandem that would have occurred to me (or, per the documentary, Dionne!), but it works beautifully. The Huey/Cyndi/Kim trio is another example. Whatever one's opinion of the song (and mine has never been very high), the craftsmanship and ingenuity of the recording-and the many types of great singing-are hard to argue with.
Wow!! "USA FOR AFRICA"❤ Lindas voces, lindo recuerdo, Michael Jackson.. la sigo escuchando porque me encanta.. quién más la escucha, hoy 13-01-25.. les deseo un gran año nuevo, lleno de Salud y Vida!! Que nos vaya bien a todos, en nombre de Díos, amén🙏🤲💟💪💯
This song should have won several prizes for its message and beautiful melody It should be heard frequently for people are loosing everything the world had, especially feelings.
Definitely the greatest night of pop! Truly talented people only! Only show up one night and record this amazing song! Shoutout to the singers, composers and the guys who arranged the singers parts by just listening to their albums
Whoelse is here after seeing the Netflix documentary. The greatest night in Pop? Edit- Wow! So much likes, it's great to see many people loved the documentary the same way I did. I doubt if such an iconic moment can ever be created in the world again.
So very relevant 40 years later- we are all one big part of this worlds family - RIP Quincy Jones and all great artists gone now from this video- angels watching over us always I believe. Such a beautiful song and group of voices ❣️
This might have been a decent song except for Bruce Springsteen. He has the worst voice ever and totally ruins it! Just horrible! Who did he know to experience such "success"?
Lyrics: [Lionel Richie] There comes a time when we heed a certain call [Lionel Richie & Stevie Wonder] When the world must come together as one [Stevie Wonder] There are people dying [Paul Simon] Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life [Paul Simon & Kenny Rogers] The greatest gift of all [Kenny Rogers] We can't go on pretending day by day [James Ingram] That someone, somewhere will soon make a change [Tina Turner] We are all part of God's great big family [Billy Joel] And the truth, you know, (love is all we need) [Michael Jackson] We are the world, we are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day So let's start giving [Diana Ross] There's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives [Diana Ross & Michael Jackson] It's true, we'll make a better day Just you and me [Dionne Warwick] Woah, send them your heart So they'll know that someone cares And their (lives will be stronger and free) [Willie Nelson] As God has shown us by turning stones to bread [Al Jarreau] And so we all must lend a helping hand [Bruce Springsteen] We are the world, we are the children [Kenny Logins] We are the ones who make a brighter day So let's start giving [Steve Perry] Woah, there's a choice we're making We're saving our own lives [Daryl Hall] It's true, we'll make a better day Just you and me [Michael Jackson] When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all [Huey Lewis] But if you just believe, there's no way we can fall [Cyndi Lauper] Well, well, well, let us realize, oh, that a change can only come [Kim Carnes] When we... I just saw the Netflix special and I had to come to see the video. This is my life's sweet melody, and the Boss' part for me gets me every time. Michael gives it that innocence that it needed and Cindy's cry is OUR cry for the world to heal, speacially Africa. WE the children of the 80's truly understand why we were raised by our parents saying " eat all your food, their are children starving in Africa" ..... ✊
My moms a gen x who always has said that EXACT thing to me I admire generation X, as a gen z I think it’s the best generation yet with some really amazing people and there’s a lot to learn from most of you
HERMOSO DOCUMENTAL CUANDO ESTABA LA CREMA Y NATA DE ESTOS CANTANTES ORGULLOSO DE ESTAR EN ESOS TIEMPOS YA NO HABRA MUSICA COMO ESTAS ESTRELLAS INOLVIDABLE
This might have been a decent song except for Bruce Springsteen. He has the worst voice ever and totally ruins it! Just horrible! Who did he know to experience such "success"?
The world used to be a real different place and this is the proof. Just look around, no emotions get passed on. That’s why people come back and watch this. Truly timeless
No glitter, no auto tune, no mumbling rap, just pure talent and soul. That’s why this version never gets old. The newer versions are just a mere shade of this masterpiece.
@@JaMie-rf1es It would have helped more if they just replayed this song but then for Haiti. No need to get the multitude of artists that were present during the Haiti-version. The new version was also more expensive to make.
i miss the days when artists genuinely cared for the world, nowadays artists will preach about helping but do absolutely nothing to help, i miss the days when artists sang from their souls, and their songs had meanings, nowadays all artists sing about is sex, money, drugs and all that. I miss the days when music had meaning and sent a message, and most of all i miss all these legends
Now they pass all the responsibility to the government so they can scape of it. They hide behind the government so they can just talk and talk and do nothing.
Gotta respect the 80's... what an incredible display of raw talent all over this here. but Willie always gets me like no one... soo loose..., Quincy did an amazing job!
Just watched the documentary on netflix about the making of this song ''The Greatest Night in Pop'' and was amazing seeing so many legends, each contributing in their own way to make this song so iconic. So much talent all at once. Incredible. Also the stories Lionel Richie tells about Michael Jackson when they were writing this at his house, including his impressions of Michael, are hilarious. 🤣 Michael and Steevie Wonders were borderline music savants, just amazing to watch. They guy who matched the voices and duos was also amazing!!
Hello from Brasil! Assisti hoje e fiquei maravilhado!
I mean it wasn't called autotune then but there's a lot of voice correction on certain parts at least, just listen to MJ's first verse (not that he needed it)
Michael jackson will always ve my favorite artist and definitely the best human being, how kind, how humble how sweet, there will never be someone like him! Much respect for lionel ritchie too
One of the best songs ever made and sang. We'll never see this again. I cannot believe how many of these singers have now passed on. Their legacy definitely lives on. Amen.
My favorite part of the Netflix documentary is when the cameraman said he wrote up his invoice for the gig and then learned everyone involved volunteered. And here he is 40 years later, appearing in the documentary, knowing he was a part of something far greater than one night's pay.
It's 2024, I'm 18 now and this song got up in the mainstream again because of the documentary. I'm listening to it for the thousandth time in my life, but only now I could comprehend how big this attitude was, only now I could recognize everyone in that video and see how much of a world change this was! So, that's the first time I'm crying listening to it! Simply amazing!!
I want you to know that there was a better time in this Country. People weren't giant cxnts like today. And the majority used to call out BS like weponized racism and gay gender BS. Blm was called the Black Panther Party and was considered the black version of the KKK which is what they are.
I was a secretary for the CFO of CBS Records when this project was happening. Being on the executive level floor, I witnessed a lot of the 'fluster' and intensity around the promotion of this. I was in tears watching the Netflix documentary "The Greatest Night in Pop". I witnessed, first hand, the frenzied excitement of it on a business/marketing level. To combine that with the emotion that went on in the studio - something I had just imagined happening all these years - to see it through this documentary - was just overwhelming!!! This was truly a once in a lifetime event. And since I'm practically at the end of my lifetime, I can say this with confidence!!
I'm glad Prince didn't show up for this. Huey Lewis's part has always hit me hard (according to the Netflix documentary Huey took Prince's part). Also.. Cyndi Lauper's part is just amazing! So raw and powerful. Plus that Stevie Wonder & Bruce Springsteen combo! It was also very nice to see the support Bob Dylan got in order to sing his part. They did a really great job matching vocals.

I don’t remember much in todays’ fast paced days, but I’ll tell you what… I vividly remember in 1985 my 2nd grade teacher sitting us in a circle and singing along to this song. We would first stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to start the day, then she would sit us down and walk over to the record player and start playing this song. We all sang together in harmony. It was beautiful. God I cherish and miss those moments. We were living in some of the best times of our lives, and didn’t even know it. BTW…. 25 years later I married her niece 😀
I'm 15 years old now, and I grew up listening to this nostalgic song. Even though it came out long before my time, it still feels like a part of my childhood.
Man i loved every second of Dylan's presence in the song and in the doc..He doesnt know how and what to sing, he seems lost in the room, but in the end he delivers a classic part which is automatically recognisable as his! And fits great to the song, too. What a legend.
I’m literally in tears especially watching the end of the Netflix series 😢that quote by Lionel’s dad about (the house)and the ambiance omg… and understanding that most of them aren’t here anymore..thank you isn’t enough 😢🫡paved the way for new artists on how it’s done to see the dedication!!. I’m literally inspired and I’m 35 I miss that era. I may come back to comment again lol. This was amazing!
I just watched "Pop's Big Night" on Netflix. It is absolutely impressive... that even watching it on Netflix it is impossible to believe how it was achieved "when they never rehearsed for weeks", leaving the Grammys for hours and hours in a studio. 47 Pop stars. You won't regret it, and it's awesome.
37 years of this wonderful masterpiece today! This has to be one of the best songs ever, from the songwriting, to the melody, to the message it conveys, and we can't ignore the sheer amount of talent!
For me second behind Stevie, but... You're also right, Michael is adorable. 😍 And he was the head behind all that with Ritchie, so... Honour and glory.
You act like he's the only one that sounds like that. His soft spoken vocal runs in the family. Listen to Janet and La Toya, and you won't find much difference.
I heard this song for the 1st time in 1987 from my Dad. I was 4years old, he always hummed the song! Now I'm 39 , my last born son is 6. He came home from school today singing the chorus.... It really took me back 35years ago! My Dad is 68 today enjoying his retirement! Over Easter holidays I'll make sure we celebrate together....& Sing together! This is what we call passing generation to generation!!
The ending really hit me and I’m 35 now. I just commented about the quote Lionel’s dad mentioned (the house) and the ambiance of Lionel saying “this person was right here she was right here “ 😢😢dang man makes you appreciate life more
Saludos desde Argentina (i dont speak englis, sorry)
As soon as Michael comes in on the first chorus, the tears start up for me. Though he and Lionel wrote it together, the heart and soul of the song really feel like a Michael song above all else. The bridge is definitively Michael...
@@mcentepede It's even better when you learn that cyndi actually couldn't stand the song as a whole but was still honored to be a part of it. Also, she actually toned down her singing so she wouldn't overshadow kim Carnes.
So much more appreciation for this song after watching the Netflix documentary and seeing how tirelessly the artists worked for this song. Well done!🙏🙏🙏♥♥♥

I like to imagine that Michael told everyone to come to the studio wearing just whatever, only so he could appear with the most and freshest drip possible lmaoo
I was born in generation Z but can definitely feel the spirits and unity of all famous singers. All their voices are impeccable and fabulous. They showed Africa their compassion, sympathy and humanity. Most of them have passed away nowadays but I can feel it immensely whenever I listen to it.
@@domingosneto7455 Its a bad song becose of few reasons, it stereotypes Africa as a continent who need help, where people are unhappy - its not true... they dont need that, thay want to be treat like a humans... About what is that song? Africa? What country? to what kind of people? This song is bullshit its not help its cruel
That man did A LOTTTT and we do not appreciate that enough.
totally agree
He is so down to earth. And also Michael Jackson.
Agreeeeee 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Dont forget he robbed a bank and ran for president the next day. The guy was a juggernaut.
Watch the documentary.
I know, right? He should also tried the lottery that night.
he didnt sleep at least two day for this i guess ... they finish recording at 7AM ... crazy night
He also performed at AMAs during that night. Just… wow.
Houve alguns ajustes na voz, ficou perfeito ❤
I miss the 80’s so bad!

Saludos!! 😉

The ending where Lionel Richie was talking about MJ no longer being here was heartbreaking. He was such a gift to this world.

Absolutely!! Such an important duo right there!

i miss the days when artists genuinely cared for the world, nowadays artists will preach about helping but do absolutely nothing to help, i miss the days when artists sang from their souls, and their songs had meanings, nowadays all artists sing about is sex, money, drugs and all that. I miss the days when music had meaning and sent a message, and most of all i miss all these legends
That means you’re not seeing the right artists. That’s the mainstream media. Most great artists now are independent.

Just watched the documentary on netflix about the making of this song ''The Greatest Night in Pop'' and was amazing seeing so many legends, each contributing in their own way to make this song so iconic. So much talent all at once. Incredible.

All of them have angel voices and special once
I'm glad Prince didn't show up for this. Huey Lewis's part has always hit me hard (according to the Netflix documentary Huey took Prince's part). Also.. Cyndi Lauper's part is just amazing! So raw and powerful. Plus that Stevie Wonder & Bruce Springsteen combo! It was also very nice to see the support Bob Dylan got in order to sing his part. They did a really great job matching vocals.
Prince was sooo self centered, better without him
Prince had good music...but had a bigger ego. His body language showed it all the time. Yeah, glad he didn't show up.
Yup. I dont think prince can take it since his ego is too big to join the group.

The way Lionel Richie pulls us right in with the opening is beautiful. Him and Stevie, Kenny Roger’s, and Paul Simon. Wow!
So it's true? Do you really recite the pledge of allegiance as children in school? That's...phew. Problematic.
Amen, to all of your words. Back then, it seemed easier. I also remember listening to this song on the record player, and we all sang together.

I was 15 when this came out and madly in love with Michael. And, my dad was a huge fan of Cyndi Lauper. Very nostalgic.
What a legend.
with the help of S. Wonder. It was kinda difficult to watch)))
That was the coolest part when Stevie Wonder has to imitate Bob Dylan to help him do his part. So great and he slayed it 😍 🙌
Bob Dylan's story was incredible. He worked so hard.

Lyric
There comes a time
When we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all
We can't go on
Pretending day-by-day
That someone, somewhere soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth, you know, love is all we need
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me
Oh, send them your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
Oh, there's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day, just you and me
When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well let us realize
Oh, that a change can only come
When we stand together as one, yeah, yeah, yeah
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day, so let's start giving
