Regarding the rubbish bins for toilet paper in batrooms, it is traditional. However, people who live in newer houses with more modern pipe systems have abandoned this habbit, for the most part. As for the hugging and kissing, it is also hard for Brazilians abroad. I have caused some awckward moments because of this, as we instinctively do that, even where it is not expected. Embarrassing moments lol.

There are many more strange things that I have experienced in Brazil. #1: Their shower water is heated by electricity and not by gas in many houses and apartments. #2: Almost all the houses and the apartments have the electric wired fences and also double doors. #3: They lock the inside door of the apartment entrance. I thought it was dangerous when there is a fire. Unless you have a key, you cannot get out of the building. #4: Almost all the apartment complexes have their own guard or care takers. #5: Almost all the middle-class families hire a maid and/or cook. Most of them commute every morning, but the richer ones have them live in their houses. There is always a maid-room with an extra bathroom in most of the middle class and above apartments and the houses. #6: Many motorists do not step and wait at a red light, especially in the evening/night. They may slow down but will keep on going if there is no traffic coming into the intersection. #7: Finally, when you drive in the countryside, you must be very careful with the speeding camera. You must keep the speed limit. If a camera catches you being speeding, you will get a ticket in the mail. Those speeding cameras can be visible and also invisible. In my first droving trip of 5 hours, I received 10 tickets. Afterwards, I drove much more carefully searching for a speeding camera, but I continually got one ticket in each trip. I have to drive slow in the countryside. That is about it.

      This thing about speeding.
The government takes speeding very seriously because of accidents.
I'm ambiguous about it, because it's horrible to get the ticket, but on the other hand, it's safer if people don't speed 😐
About the lock, it depends on the house, my family house uses the lock only when we go outside.
When there are people at home we use a door latch.

The toilet paper dumping problem I think it's more cultural than anything to do with the plumbing. In my house we changed habits over 20 years ago, it's an old house, old plumbing etc. We just use good quality toilet paper, one that dissolves easily in the water. We have been flushing the paper since then and we never had a problem with cluggings etc. You can flush the paper, indeed, as long as if its a good quality toilet paper meant to be flushed.

But people believe in this, now a myth, until today. 😂

Wow! Back in my time school was 1pm until 5:30 pm only.
We never had rice and beans every day. We used to say people who are broke eat rice and beans and a fried egg. But you eat differently when you are doing well. Sometimes you eat rice and beans and a steak and a salad. Maybe strogonoff and fries and so on. Salads are very popular as a side dish.
Hot meals for both lunch and dinner. Sandwiches are breakfast or tea time food.
Also, dinner is much later around 9 pm so you have a 5pm tea, sometimes a 7pm snack or earlier dinner. Your mileage may vary.

The arriving late thing, I think the concept here is more or less like, if the party says 7pm, its the expected time that people can begin to arrive. Its more like a reference than anything. In parties that require that you arrive on time, usually the invite will inform you of that.

As for the greetings, even for me it's difficult to get, as some greet just with a handshake (man or woman) and others give a hug, others give one kiss or two kisses. Sometimes when you shake hands, people ignore and give you a hug, or when you kiss and back off, people give you a second kiss. Sometimes this makes us uncomfortable; could there be a pattern about it......kkkkk.

Brasil does have a bad DOG problem, a lot of strays, I've seen them running packs at night like wolves
The other problem is that many apartment buildings have at least ONE dog that barks all day- because they are lonely.
I've seen this is regular Brasilian's aptos AND in very expensive aptos in front of the beach. Basically NOTHING you can do about it
In civilized countries they have animal control and the SPCA to deal with this problem
I've been told that many dogs have prescription anti-depressive pills they take.
My pharmicist friends tell me that Brasilians in general are a huge population on these same anti-depressive drugs, maybe why most Brasilians are 'happy' people
YES there are many lunch and dinner buffet restaurants all over BR
Most of the are LIVRE, meaning you can eat all you want for ONE price. I've seen livre lunches from r$12 to r$30.
It seems the south loves to eat rodizio pizza, that means they come to your table and you pick what pizza you want to eat. They keep coming till your stomach explodes or you die. I think they like pizza better than beef
I find it difficult to find cheap chinese food in the south. LOT of it in the north as cheap as r$10 a plate for yaksoba.
And strangely, I find much better Churrasco chain restaurants in the north too, like Boi Brasa and Sal e Brasa. Usually about r$40 per person for ALL the meat and buffet you can eat. Very high quality.
WAS/IS very common to have propane tanks INSIDE a cabinet IN your kitchen, kind of damgerous
I am seeing some cities outlawing that and requiring the tank to be OUTSIDE
ONE of the reasons that Brasilians have the option of spreading out their payments is because many Brasilians live paycheck to paycheck and many get their govt checks at the END of the month. So many RUN OUT of $$ by then and have to finance everything till they get their check
ANOTHER reason NOT to live on the ground floor ?
When your apto building has an excess of people who flush their toilet paper, it heads to the septic tank on the property (in some cases to the city septic system). The problem is that it and the poop shows UP in your ground floor shower drain because the septic system can't process all of it that fast.
MOST of that old rule about putting TP in the bucket is from when places had inadequate narrow sewer pipes that just could not handle the flow. NICE to have at least 2 big plungers on hand
WHO wants smelly poop stained toilet paper sitting next to you in the bathroom ?
Today 90% of new construction has adequate piping to the city sewer system and you CAN flush TP down the Toilet.
On the same vein, today you CAN drink the public city water. It's treated and safe to drink in most modern cities.
I could probably throw a rock accross the bay to you at PALMAS, well maybe SHOOT a rock over there. I can see Biguacu from here in the north island
What kind of a visa did you use to move to Brasil ?

All tropical countries have problems with dogs and cats for a simple reason: they can survive outside. In very cold countries they could not survive without owners during the winter. When I was in Europe as a tourist I heard that many animals were abandoned by their owners especially during the summer because people wanted to travel "without problems"... Abandoned animals or born on the streets can survive here if someone feeds them, but in Europe it's more difficult if they are not really adopted.

THAT isn't what I was talking about, I was talking about NOT TRAINING DOGS to BEHAVE civily, like NOT barking ALL DAMN DAY while Mommy is gone, isn't really the dogs fault, there are just NOT TRAINED
WHY do dogs in the US NOT BARK all day ? Because they were told NOT TO and behaved, they got the wrapped up newspaper treatment till they figured it out.
I think in places like Mexico and Brasil their animals DON'T FEEL LOVED or cared for, that is why they have such a hard time dealing with being alone.

It is polite to delay your arrive by 15~~30 minutes so the hosts have time finishing preparations unless you want to help them finish in that case you arrive in time. In business is the opposite it is considered impolite to let the other person waiting so you generally arrive 5'~~10 minutes earlier and if you can't arrive in time you generally send a message throw whatsapp/telegram to the person. This meal in the middle of the day is what helps us keep healthier/leaner than other countries, eating during night generally leads to weight gain and we here in Brazil love to stay in shape. Do people don't brush their teeth 3 times a day in other places? That system for gas is the one we all use LMAO one in use one full when you finish the one in use you swap to the other and buy at the earlier convenience. Owned cats and dogs have a collar(some people even put their phone numbers in the collar) and cats and dogs without are considered stray. So when you adopt a cat/dog the first thing it is asked from you it is to immediately put a collar in them if possible a custom one with your phone number because as you said we let the roam in the streets. Schools they were changed a couple years ago. We used to have 4h schools because there is no correlation between grades/learning and time studying in school beyond that amount of time. But in government a couple years ago a lot of people argued that it would be better and more convenient for parents if schools make kids stay for a little longer so parents could live work and pick up them at around the same time. It was 8>12 before and 13>17 in afternoon but because people live at work at 17 school finishing at the time was odd for parents and so they increased the amount of time by an hour to 13>18 but since school is done in turns the morning turn needed to be extended by an hour too. They even reworked the school curriculum to account for that.
