LOTS of 80s Brazilian samba vibes in this beautiful song, in fact, Armando Marçal was born in Rio de Janeiro, his father ran the largest Brazilian samba school and his grandfather was a famous samba composer.

Hey, Brandon. Fun fact: in previous years, Pat Metheny's band had Pedro Aznar in his line-up. Pedro was the bassist in the Argentinian prog-rock band Serú Girán 😎

I’ve mentioned this before… when Prog died in the mid 70’s, those of us who wanted something more epic than disco went to Pat….where we’ve been for 50 years.
The amount of output he creates is hard to keep up with.
What awaits you, not now, you’re not quite ready, is THE WAY UP. One piece , 67 minutes.
There’s no composition that comes close to this.
    But now that you’ve had a taste…may I recommend
    “You”
    “Roots of Coincidence”
    “A Place in the World”
    “September 15th”
I know you love Yes, Genesis, ELP.
This is the next logical step.
Oh how I wish I could go back and hear those tunes for the first time.

Brandon, glad to see another Pat Metheny Group reaction!! The upper echelon of music!! There is a huge catalog to choose from!! Everyone will have great suggestions, I might suggest "Follow Me", "Dream of the Return" (absolutely beautiful), "As It Is", "James", "To the End of the World", and "Facing West".

I remember when I first heard it in the late eighties; a warm wind that has sheltered me since then. Here in Argentina the PMG has always had a lot of recognition. Our landscapes and cultural traditions fit perfectly with Pat's musical aesthetic and craft. Brandon, great reaction again.

    Awright! Pat Metheny!
I caught one of his shows in the 90s in St. Louis - it was fantastic, of course. And saw him and his band perform at a Kansas City Jazz & Blues Festival.

Oh dear, this reminds me how silly I was to get rid of my album “Still Life” years ago... There's a lightness to Metheny's guitar playing - and his compositions in general - that is just delightful, even on slow tracks (check out “Dream of the Return”). “Minuano” is no exception: a pleasant musical trip full of life🌴, warmth🌹and sunshine🌞. Nice pick!

Nice to hear Pat Metheny again. This is such a great “feel good” song… really fun vibes! I do again recommend the song “This Is Not America” which features David Bowie with the group. It was from the soundtrack from the movie “The Falcon and the Snowman” that Pat Metheny made.

If I were asked to say by whom the first part was, I'd guess Egberto Gismonti (another ECM Records signup. BTW, though Pat's "Still Life (Talking)" was already post-ECM), probably the greatest Brazilian musician ever, though he has much more recognition abroad than in his home country. Egberto can make music with whatever he gets in his hands (including supposedly non-musical objects), but he's particularly good with the acoustic guitar and the piano. That intro section sounded like a fusion of two tracks by Egberto: "Maracatu" (pronounced "mah-rah-kah-TOO", a piano track inspired by the eponymous popular musical genre from Northeastern Brazil) and "Carta de Amor" ("Love Letter"), with the piano from the former and the vocalese from the latter. Yes, it was just vocalese, there were no actual lyrics.
I credit that to the presence of Armando Marçal (by the way, it's a C-cedilla, Ç, not an ordinary C, so it's pronounced "marSAL", not "marKAL"), better known by the affectionate diminutive form Marçalzinho (the "nh" is pronounced the same as French or Italian "gn", as in "mignon" or "gnocchi", so now you know that the supposedly deadly little riverfish is NOT pronounced "piranna"). Marçal certainly knows Egberto and was probably influenced by him. Like Egberto and a few other élite Brazilian musicians, he splits his time between Brazil and overseas. The rest of the song, however, is totally, unmistakably Pat Metheny. But I still agree that his golden era was at ECM, from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. The musicianship remained the same afterwards, but he lost some undefinable "glow" or "pizazz". "Still Life (Talking)" is probably his best post-ECM album, though.
As for the minuano wind, FORTUNATELY I've never experienced it. The only time I visited that part of Brazil in winter (Rio Grande do Sul, our southernmost state, bordering on Uruguay and Argentina) it was chilly (the capital city of Porto Alegre was looking like London, just a few degrees above freezing and with a thick fog, and in a smaller city I went afterwards the water froze in the pipes one morning), but the minuano wasn't blowing. It's said to chill down your bones and to sneak through your clothes, no matter how heavy and tight they are!
If you look it up on the map, there are no natural barriers between Antarctica and Rio Grande do Sul, it's either open sea or low plains almost at sea level. So, despite the long distance, chilly winds blow without hindrance directly from the South Pole and reach that far north. Unlike most of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul is outside the tropics and can have chilly winters, even with occasional snowfall in some higher places. But it was there that Brazilian-style barbecue was invented, and Minuano is a common name for barbecue restaurants all over Brazil, as few other things from there are more typical and famous than that freezing wind.
Oh, on an unrelated note, you may like to know that Roger Waters visited Brazilian President Lula today at the presidential palace in the national capital city of Brasília. Roger was going to do a concert in Brasília and took the opportunity for the visit. Years ago, Lula was imprisoned for a couple of years due to unproven corruption charges in a highly politically rigged prosecution case. Obviously, he was eventually released and won the next presidential election. Roger tried to visit him in prison at the time, but that was denied. Still, he helped raise international awareness and pressure for Lula's release. The now president felt obliged to give him a warm welcome and his thanks. twitter.com/LulaOficial/status/1716555249635184816 instagram.com/p/CywW6K6vE2K/?img_index=1
