This performance visited so many levels of THE MAGIC of JAZZ! EPIC! Love watching people do things with a spirit of EXCELLENCE! That includes you!
Pat Metheney and the late Lyle Mays will absolutely transport you. The pairing of their guitar & keyboards was as literally magical as anything I've ever experienced. Check them out, your ears and heart will thank you!
Yes! Those two are the sound of summer in my soul.
Yes - "Oh My Gosh!" I cry every time I hear this piece. Perfect reaction.
The guitar god himself. Thank you. If you want to hear a similarly complex work by Pat that also showcases his guitar playing skills and not just his composing skills - I highly recommend you react to "Minuano" live. You will LOVE it.
in love with First Circle since..........1983 ! This work will be in memorial of world music
I first heard of Pat Metheny and this song because of drum corps (1998 Crossmen). Fay's singing just sounds so pure, and I am always impressed by the way it blends in so well with the instrumentation.
Welcome to the music of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays - some of the most beautiful music ever created. Absolutely genius and spellbinding! Thank you for this reaction, please do more reactions to them... And by the way, congratulations on reaching the 100k subs milestone! Bravo!
First Circle was most recently performed in DCI by the Colts this summer. Crossmen's Metheny show in 1998 was a classic. Boston Crusaders also did a Metheny show in the early 90s.
Great reaction. All these decades later and I still listen to this version. The wordless vocals are a Metheny trademark, but there are a couple of things you should look for:
The Pat Metheny Group did a version of “First Circle” live in Japan. This version had all his original group, and you should watch it (maybe not for a reaction, but yourself). The vocalists are David Blamires and Mark Ledford (RIP). The extraordinary thing about them is that every time you see them, they are whipping out a different instrument… trumpet, flugelhorn, guitar, percussion… sometimes AS they are vocalizing! It’s absolutely a must see for you, personally.
Lastly, your next stop should be “Third Wind.” Take your pick of whichever performance you like, but I advise the North Sea Jazz performance from this same year. I would love to see your reaction to THAT!
If your mind was blown by this one, it will literally combust into pieces from that song.
Watch how the bass player slowly loses his mind. 😂
And most importantly, watch how Pat interacts with and acknowledges the orchestra. I’ve seen him live several times, and he treats other musicians as his equals. Incredibly, he treats his fans listeners the same . He is the embodiment of humility.
One thing that I have to say to the credit of Metropole Orchestra: Pat has had a lifetime to write, learn and perform these songs. I would imagine the orchestra had, at best, a week to learn and perform this.
Best to you.
@@DanSpomer absolutely fantastic comment. Thank you so much for it, Dan. I'll give the other version of First Circle a watch/listen, and put Third Wind on my list.
Perhaps more than my own personal appreciation of PM's compositions, I derive great pleasure watching others hear his genius for the first time. Tear inducing indeed.
Blessings on you Charlie, your artist selections and reviews, are passionate, thoughtful, connected, technically helpful, and you model being a lovely human being. Thankyou.
Wow! Thank you so much. This comment means everything to me 🥹
That was epic, Ms. Lovsky voice used like an instrument was phenomenal. Charlie your reaction was so sweet but also heart wrenching, watching your emotional response had me teary too ❤
There's no on like Pat Metheny. The look on your face when Fay was singing was priceless. Good choice.
drum corps+Pat Metheny are great friends, check that out
Great reaction! I only just found this concert with the Metropole myself. It's awesome. Metheny is a rabbit hole, for sure. There are so many records.
Next stop could be: It's For You from As Fall Wichita, so Falls Wichita Falls.
Thanks so much for covering this; Pat truly is a musical phenomenon.
As good as this is, Charlie, it can never hold a candle to the original release in 1984 with Pedro Aznar on vocals and Lyle Mays on piano - if you have not heard that, please do.
This tune was my first introduction to Metheny many years ago and is still one of my very favorite. It's so maddeningly complex under the hood, but sounds almost effortless. I was lucky enough to see him in concert in 2018 and it was everything!
I bet that was the most incredible experience. I'm so pleased you got to have it 😁
Thank you for this. Pat and Lyle are genius.
Had to come-back. Re: “getting ideas to-tape”…absolutely.
When you hear Devin Townsend one day, and his immense catalogue, you’ll hear someone who simply generates endless music like Mozart did. He just thinks, records, performs, and shares his gift with the world. He just generates life’s exhaust and analyzes it later. I’ve learned so much from him in the last 25 years.
Thank you!
You should do The Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps... The Music of Pat Metheny. AWESOME
The way he layers and builds is just awesome...now you need to make the connection of DCI and Metheny! First Circle has been done a lot and so has Heat of the Day, they work so well on the field!
I was on the road this weekend and just had a chance to comment on this one, but the two words I would describe this are "sonic oasis"! I noticed some of the other comments that stated that DCI and Matheny are TOTALLY compatible: to age myself, I was first introduced to "The First Circle" by the 1985 Blue Devils, then listened to the original by the Pat Metheny Group featuring his "writing partner-in-crime," the late great Lyle Mays. This song is part of my workout music for the gym, as well as "Minuano (Six Eight)" and "Third Wind". DCI-wise, check out 1991 Crossmen and 1998 Crossmen, who did whole shows based on Pat Metheny's music.
if you like Pat Metheny, especially The First Circle. I recommend the 2024 show “On Fields”. The Colts are also a finalist Drum Corps and we loves to play Pat Metheny’s music
Yeesss!!
Wonderful video.
Anyone else think back to Bluecoats 2024? Can’t help but-to, and that’s all good to me. Been a better year than years past, thanks to having music like this (and that) brought to bear.
Love this. Pat Metheny provided the soundtrack for my life for so many years...but I haven't kept up, and this is spectacular. The woman's voice reminds me a bit of Flora Purim in her early years... being an instrument rather than a singer of lyrics. Lovely.
Please react to the Pat Metheny Group playing this song! This version is great, but PMG's live performances of this song are profound!
Charlie, you need to listen to First Circle by the Pat Matheny Group. Also, the Pat Matheny/Lyle Mays songbook is as good as any artist in any genre in history. You my friend are about to go on a musical journey that will be unprecedented, enjoy … looking forward to your next Pat video - take care … 👍
Highly intricate weave of so many facets of musical composition. And I see recommendations in the comments for other pieces, which I will find and view. And look up the performers as well. And, Charlie, I also thought that had a definite hint of 60s film score...... But others may disagree with me? E❤
Yes I totally agree with you Eileen ☺️❤️

The clapping is in 22/8 …
Hello Charlie. You love complex piece with great vocal and lot of musicians ? You could make a reaction to A Speck Of Dust from Leonid & Friends : une œuvre monumentale !
Pat is a genius, of course, but this one (and many others) is the result of a great friendship with another genius: Lyle Mays (RIP). Listen to the original (1984), I still think it's better than that. I like the reaction. 😍
