Someone recommended "Year of the Newt" by the musician Bobbing to me because I like Max Tundra, and trying to find out more about him I came across the "indietronica" sub-genre on RateYourMusic that lists 12,000 releases by hundreds of artists I'd never heard of. There are more kinds of metal than there are brands of guitar amp. Sturgeon's Law "90% of everything is crap" applies, but that leaves hundreds of thousands of tracks every year that are pretty good.
Louis might be the only person alive right now who can put all these styles of music into one song and come out with a result that not only avoids being cringe but is also just a genuine bop.
I so agree! Not quite jaded senior jazz musician has been in a quandary for years where to direct his energies. I don't want to pretend I have something "new and relevant" nor do I want to wallow in the old "groovy, hip" sensibilities" of the past. This music genuinely excites me and points to a refreshing renaissance of all the elements that make great music accessible and elevating and engaging.

Beck is obviously a technically virtuosic drummer, but to me he has this unrefined manner of so desperately avoiding a repeating pattern that all his drum work ends up sounding the same to me. Domi is obviously some kind of chord master, but I want to see her really work on memorable melodies rather than just changing around as much as possible. There’s stuff of theirs that I’ve felt blissfully stimulated listening to, and then there are times when it seems like interminable meandering.
The fusion of orchestra and jazz/funk/pop is inspired. I bet the orchestra enjoyed playing this. Really great orchestra break with some excellent harmonies. This is music for the 21st century. Thank you Louis Cole for your artistry. ❤

Rhythmic it does something to my neurotransmitters, my mental math that seems to create some alignment that doesn’t exist when I’m not listening to this music. Harmonically, it soothes me, but in a tremendously expensive way. Like I’m flying over the planet experiencing humanity Like life is some big neural network and we’re all connected to everything. And besides that, it just amuses me. There is a joyful sarcasm. A playful irreverence, and yeah, it just makes me feel good in a way that not much else does and I’m a pretty happy person for the most part. But this, this is extraordinarily special. Like really effing special.
Like the first rocket launch to outer space or the founding of the internet, this song represents the summation of all human progress made up to this point.

But this collaboration is missing that spark. The arrangement is already full. Adding the orchestra adds very little. Maybe I should word it differently. The players are so busy with themselves and the technical performance of this very tight music that adding the orchestra is taking away from it. And not because they can’t add to it, but there isn’t enough space in the music to add this orchestra. A mismatch. That is what it feels like. Can’t help it. But now I have to dash. To go sit in a corner. Alone, feeling bitter and random 🤣🤣🤣
