As a music major and horn player from many years ago, I LOVED your analysis! So 1) that's a double-bell euphonium (yep, it's a thing) and 2) what will blow your mind is that Dirty Loops was filmed and recorded in Sweden and Cory Wong and the horns were in Minnesota. Welcome as others will say "to the rabbit hole" that you just have to go down. You will love them!

Extra info in case you didn't know:
    1. Quincy Jones is their manager. So wearing the Michael Jackson-jacket is kind of... approved.
    2. At least two of the guys have a master degree in composition so the make their own arrangements.
    3. The winters in Sweden are long. And lonely. Plenty time for practizing...

Hey NitPick ;) this was one fun reaction!
Nice to see your mind blown by these bad dudes ☺️
Dirty Loops have been around for about 13 years, when they exploded the internet with their crazy covers of Lady Gaga, Brittney Spears, Justin Bieber etc. -songs.
They are the three guys on the right, Jonah Nilsson on vocals/keys, Aron Mellergård on drums and Henrik Linder on bass. Three friends from Sweden who met early on in school and later went to study a range of courses at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. Now known for their unique style of genre bending fusion, from classical to jazz, rock, pop, R&B, soul…you name it.
All come from musical backgrounds. Take a deep dive into their Wikipedia page :)
Most of all tho listen to their catalog, it’s mindbending stuff.
I’m glad you enjoyed that wicked rendition of Thriller, and yeah, they seriously mess with the rhythmic feel (this one is mainly in 12/8 with a swung feel) as well as messing with the harmonic structure at times.
Yeah, you pointed out the minor seconds, and I think too that there are a lot of chromatic progressions there… also substituting major for minor chords sometimes… They screw your head off and then back on again, all the time 🤣
Aron, their drummer, does a lot of their writing and arranging, even down to writing Henrik’s basslines sometimes.
Cory Wong is an independent funk/rhythm guitarist from the US, one of the best, and has played with the best. His horns here are partially members of the famous Hornheads who toured and recorded with Prince, amongst many other greats.
The guy on sax/flute, Kenni Holmen has a sick sax solo in their title track ‘Turbo’, as well as fantastic FLUTE solo in ‘Ring of Saturn’!
You might want to check out those two tracks, as well as ‘Follow the Light’, all from the same album and collab.
The horn arrangements are, mostly at least, written by Michael Nelson, here also on sax and the Double Belled Euphonium :) (famous back in the day for its ability to smuggle large quantities of grog onto stage, inside its bells, I heard ☺️)
Grace Kelly with the blue hair is another stellar musician with her own YT site and projects.
And those fast, tongued notes: is there such a thing as triple tonguing?? I’m clearly not a wind/brass player 😂
During the COVID years Cory contacted the Loops and suggested a collaboration. The result is this album, Turbo. Some of the tracks on it are more Dirty Loops-led and written, some more by him.
This one here is a Loops idea, I believe.
Because they couldn’t travel and meet in lesson, the whole writing and arranging of this album, was done over the phone and internet, on two separate continents. The Loops did their stuff in Sweden, Cory in the US. Yes, even the filming 😱
Both bands made sure they had agreed on the same carpet, lighting, camera angles, etc.
Afterwards Aron, the drummer, edited all the footage together (he edits all of Dirty Loops’ videos.)
Dirty Loops are on Quincy Jones management board, but they (and Cory in this case) produce all their music and videos themselves.
Others have much better info, I’m sure, but this much so far.
Hoping that you’ll go down the Dirty Loops (and Cory Wong) path, and that we’ll get to listen to more Dirty Loops with you.
It was a super interesting analysis, I thought 👍
Next up could be “Turbo”, “Follow the Light” and “Ring of Saturn”, for that crazy flute solo 🔥💛🔥
    Thanks 🙏

Dirty Loops is known for their mind-blowing arrangements and reharmonization of pop songs, they're phenomenal. Musician's musicians, yet strangely accessible to regular people who love music. Love the pure joy and surprise on your face, and being a musician, you catch some of the little things that other reactors sometimes miss! The other best reactors that I enjoy on this band are Charismatic Singer, and Stratele Studios. Both play/perform, so they also have a deeper appreciation for what DL manages to wring out of a song...

    Ok… it’s 12/8. …and not just a wind section… that’s the “Horn Heads” who played with Prince.
The feature of the double belled euphonium is a 4th valve which redirects the sound through the 2nd ‘brighter’ sounding bell. This is possibly the 1st time a double belled euphonium was used on a pop recording EVER.
If you like Dirty Loops, please consider listening to another Quincy Jones discovery: Jacob Collier… I’d recommend his cover of “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing”…
Or… if you want to check a group with more of an instrumental focus…
Snarky Puppy… like “What About Me”

Now go down the rabbit hole...follow the light should be next.
The double bell euphonium combines the sound of the euphonium which is what we hear. The smaller bell is comparable to a valve trombone activated by an extra valve. They play either one or the other.

You also need to check out Gigi de Lana if you like artists who takes an origional song and makes it their own.
Gigi is from The Philippines. She is known as the "Queen of Covers" as you will find out. ANY song in ANY style, Jazz/blues/rock and they now own them. These performances are REQUESTS during a 2 hour livestream on her channel.
You need to check out "Fly me to the Moon" for her JAZZ chops, "Unholy" for Rock, and "Better Days" for story telling.
She and her band get an 11/10 from almost ALL the voice coaches on RUclips so enjoy your journey.

The next song, is usually "Work shxt out", but you have so much to choose from - everything great, fantastic or amazing! "Next to you" is like the flagship thus far, I would recommend "Hit me" ruclips.net/video/utn6TnORINM/видео.html Welcome aboard! 😉

You seem to have just had a kind of «world-of-music» change. I had one too, in 1984. There was a «song» (there are vocals, but no words) that literally teared one of my music doors ajar. The tune is called «First Circle», and the band is named Pat Metheny Group. There are not many videos of that tune, and no version is as deep-touching as the album version. That tunes never leaves me, and rises my soul when needed.

    • @NittPicc
      @NittPicc  6 месяцев назад +2

I love First Circle! It's such a good chart. I have had the opportunity to hear it a few times in college from each respective school's jazz band. I don't I have actually heard the album version itself though.

If you like to have your mind blown, listen to Dirty loops playing Baby, by Justin Bieber. The only thing that is still the same are the lyrics and 80% of the melody.. It has some of the sickest Chord substitutions you could imagine. Dirty loops are top notch musicians.
