“Jonah's different though, he’s got the perfect balance of right brain creativity and left brain music theory. It’s in his blood,” says Quincy Jones. “He’s got soul, with one of the biggest ranges I’ve ever heard.”

Dirty Loops plays around with mic for comedic effect. In one song, at the beginning there are several mics in front of a tiny micro practice amp, right next to an unmic'ed regular cabinet

Thanks for a fun reaction! It's always fun to see someone discovering Dirty Loops for the first time, and have their minds blown by this insanely competent powerhouse of a group. They started the group as a hobby project in 2008, making twisted jazz fusion covers of top 40 songs, and never thought it would be anything other than that. In 2010 they put up a video on youtube (a cover of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance"), as a booking reference, to see if they could get a gig or two, just for fun, as they thought their music was way too unsexy for anyone to actually like it. Needless to say, they were completely wrong. The video went viral and a LOT of people absolutely loved it. Just about everything they've ever released is of this ridiculous musical quality, so if you consider checking out more of them, you could basically pick anything, and you more than likely won't be disappointed. And believe it or not, they're just as stupidly good live.
They've all known each other and played together for 20+ years by now, in their late thirties. Jonah (keyboard/vocals) and Henrik (bass) even went to music elementary school together and met when Henrik was 11 and Jonah was 9. Aron (drums) comes from another part of Sweden and came along when he moved to Stockholm at the age of 16, to attend the same music high school as they did (he was in the year between the other two). Then they all attended Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Royal College of Music) in Stockholm, where Henrik and Aron studied jazz/rock, and Jonah opted for music production (iirc) as his main subject.
This is not produced by Quincy Jones, as he's just their manager, and they do everything themselves, with the help of a guy named Simon Petrén. They've said that they don't send Quincy anything, not even demos, until the whole song is done, video and all. All their songs are thoroughly composed and arranged before they record, with the exception of some improvised solo bits here and there (like most of the piano and drum solos in this one), and the music for their videos is recorded beforehand. Jonah said in an interview that he and Aron actually had to transcribe and learn their mostly improvised solos, so that they could play them back when filming this. They do not record the music together for the most part either, but rather add the parts one by one. If you want a deeper insight into their working process, there's a really good interview with Henrik in Bass Magazine. I can't link it here, as youtube won't accept that link for some reason, but if you search for Henrik Linder Songified it'll pop right up. He said the following about Work Shit Out in that interview:
Bass Magazine: "“Work Shit Out” has a killer fretless, finger-funk bass line and it’s the most musically adventurous track on the EP."
Henrik: "That’s how we conceived it, as a song that would evolve into a long improvised section with keyboard and drums solos. It started with Aron’s octave-jumping MIDI bass line. I wanted to simplify it a bit and remove one of the beats, but Aron insisted on his version, so I had to figure out how to play it because it’s a little unorthodox on bass. From there, Aron and I wrote the verse and the chorus, coming up with the one-note melody concept for the chorus. Then Jonah and Aron added all the harmonies. For Jonah’s solo, I stick pretty much to the root notes so he stretch and change the harmonies above them. It was a lot of fun to play the song live on a few gigs before the pandemic because it took different directions each time."
Don't put too much stock in the microphone placements for the bass, as these guys are absolute trolls when it comes to those things. For example, in the video for "World on Fire" they have the smallest EBS amp you can find and a whole bunch of mics on it, and also on some other bass equipment that doesn't even produce any sound.

Man, these guys are nuts! (in a good way). I love how the drums are mic-ed across both channels and just everything about this. Serious ELP vibes here with the combination of styles from rock to jazz to classical, all in one song! I need to follow these guy's channel! Thanks Jeremy & Jillian for reacting to this!!😄👍👍👍

it's great to see how people respond to DL. After i saw some video's i had to check them out if they where as good as the video's. In 2010 i saw them playing in Amsterdam. I didn't expect that Jonah could also do what he showed in the videos live. But he could. Of course they use harmony in the background like Michael Jackson did. Later on (2013) they played with an extra keyboard player that also arranged the harmonies. This makes the band more complete and their technical qualities were better highlighted by the support of an extra band member. I've seen them live about five times now and it's better every time. I enjoy their technique and high school talent. I hope that more and more people become acquainted with their exceptional qualities. Although I estimate that this is not for the masses, but rather for people with musical ears. Greetings from the Netherlands and keep doing what you are doing.

I found Dirty Loops a couple of years ago when they recorded with Cory Wong (who I started following because of his work with Vulfpeck). There's so much going on right now in the Funk/Fusion scene (Dirty Loops, Cory Wong, Vulfpeck, Fearless Flyers, Knower, Louis Cole, Scary Pockets, Domi & JD Beck, Snarky Puppy, Cory Henry).

Bassist Henrik Linder - bass teachers use him as an example of a student. Henrik studied piano from the age of 3; he is a concert pianist; at 14 he switched to bass guitar and plays both bass and guitar parts. Linder plays two of Mattison's basses; one six-string and one five-string for playing slap.

They do a collaboration With Corey Wong to cover MJ's Thriller. Talk about a fresh take on a classic! Every song they do is amazing, but they all have ONE thing in common... You'll be shaking your head in disbelief. Their vocal and instrumental mastery is phenomenal. It's to the point that I suspect many folks who do not play an instrument or have any musical education/training are a little overwhelmed by them. I LOVED your reaction and your appreciation! So fun to experience you experiencing Dirty Loops for the first time!
You will enjoy Jonah’s singing in Next to you. Observe that Jonah does all the singing. Don’t think “nice choir”, think “Jonah, Jonah, Jonah, …”.
You won’t get this much drum solo in any other DL song (released this far, a new album is in the making), but you always get some nice fills, at the very least.
Welcome to the DL world of music! (commonly called the rabbit hole).

This isn’t a live recording, but in all their videos it’s mind blowing how precise they recreate their studio playing.
So, if you think it’ll be familiar next time, forget it. Start with Next To You to get the full pleasure of Jonah’s voice and a song one wanna have on repeat all day. Then their new release Run Away will change your perception of bass playing. And then..oh, there are soo many incredible songs, and nothing is bad or dull. They’ve been at it for some 13-14 years now so there are quite a few to choose from. And apart from their exceptional talent and imagination the songs are quite different.

    @fiddlestix3025 5 месяцев назад +11

So glad that you guys discovered Dirty Loops!
Thanks to Melli for that one 🙏
I stumbled over them on RUclips, listening to a mix of jazz, rock, classical and everything else…which I find Dirty Loops to be. A genre in their own right ☺️
Hiatus Kaiyote is a great comparison, as are so many other bands and musicians.
Dirty Loops though are totally unique again.
Jonah’s vocals: Quincy Jones (yes, THE Quincy Jones) has said of Jonah: “….he’s got soul, and one of the biggest ranges I’ve heard.”
His musical fans and friends range from Chaka Khan to Stevie Wonder, Jacob Collier, Brian McKnight, Louis Cole… just to name a few.
He’s also released a solo album, well worth checking out.
Hailing from Sweden, all three Loopers grew up with some musical family background.
Jonah started out basically singing from age one. Both his parents were choir masters. At around age four he started learning the piano. Later on, during his music college years, he switched to jazz piano, and also studied music production.
All three met during their music con years, Jonah and Henrik even before that.
Henrik started playing the piano, but switched to bass when he was around eleven.
He’s one of the most freakin amazing young bass players around today.
Aron on drums is a world unto himself.
Not only does he play insane drums, he co-writes a lot of their songs (including the one-note chorus line in this one) as well as many of Henrik’s bass lines (!), also writes pieces for orchestra, and edits all of their music videos.
You’ve noted the amps and mic setup there, Jeremy. I know zilch about any of this, but have heard that they like to goof around a fair bit in their music videos. For example, Henrik sitting in front of this wall of amps. And in another vid from the same album (Phoenix) you see him sitting in front of the tiniest amp, with a whole press conference of mics pointing at it 😉
So not sure how serious this all is…
In an interview with Bass Magazine, Henrik tho talks some interesting facts about the making of this and their other tracks from Phoenix.
This piece is in straight 4/4 all the way through, with a berimbau looped in the background, but man do they screw your head on and off, rhythm-wise…
I’d honestly love for you to do a second reaction video with ‘Matt’, and see another person’s appreciation to his insane drumming!
By the way, I’ve never heard them play live, but to all accounts they’re just as amazing live as they are in the studio… 😱
And Jillian, you nailed it as well noticing the amazing sound production and mix.Their sound engineer, Simon Petrén (sometimes referred to as ‘the fourth member of Dirty Loops’s), is equally on another level. Another Swedish super musician.
I loved your appreciation and analysis of this piece.
Looking forward to more Dirty Loops on your channel 👍✌️🤘🙏

One more thing: this is their only song where Aron gets a designated, minutes-long drum solo, as far as I know.
      In all their other pieces he’s just a breathtaking, brain-melting drummer… 💜
Although often all three of them take turns with a few bars of solos.
Always insane, all three of them.

I am addicted to watching people experience "Dirty Loops" (especially THIS song) for the first time. They are insanely talented and I love how they bridge a massive chasm between bubble-gum pop type of melodies and lyrics with full-on fusion shredding with classical and jazz vibes. Not everyone's cup of tea, but those that recognize all the nuances and licks... THEY (you) get to enjoy them to the fullest. Now try any of the collabs with Cory Wong, or maybe "Next to You"...

These guys got famous some 15 years ago when they began uploading re-arranged contemporary and songs from thre '80s here on YT. Needless to say they went super viral and more or less everyone in the biz from Quincy Jones to David Foster were singing their praises so to speak. The latter one kinda took them under his wings as his protégés. Nowadays they belong to Quincy Jones Productions. If you really wanna here Jonah's (keys, vo) range you gotta check out Breakdown it will blow your mind trust me!! I'd say his voice is a mix between Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder! All the names at the end are just their sense of humour i'd say and you gotta be a Swede or at least live in Scandinavia to know who those people are. For people outside Sweden/Scandinavia it doesn't make much sense.

@@peterdedes2460 is that true?!?! That’s mind blowing to me. Henrick is SO beyond a vast majority of players…so it’s shocking to think he isn’t writing the parts on his own. (Or at least doing most of it). That is wild.

@@musikbyjh in Run Away, he has Aron’s name fake tattooed on one of his fake hands. Henrik has talked about how Aron will write parts for Henrik to play. Likely for rhythmic intent. But Henrik is a superlative player on his own. All of Dirty Loops are fabulous musicians

I don't totally remember how I first heard of Dirty Loops- it might have been the same friend who introduced me to Jacob Collier, or it might have just been in the comments sections of some of Jacob Collier's videos/reactions ? Or even in a recommended video from something related to him. But the way that I make sure my algorithm is giving me both things that I will enjoy and fresh new and small artists is this: I will make a list of my favorites, prioritizing smaller/more unique tracks/artist, and be sure to play them fairly often, while also clicking on the related/recommended videos that look good, and so on down the rabbit hole until it starts veering too far off course; then I start the process over again. Another method I use is going from recommendations in the comments like I mentioned, and also searching up keywords for hyper specific genres + [other genre/country/instrument/etc] to see what unique things I can find. Also local community/university radio stations + their apps (like KCRW and KUCR) usually have lots of really neat music on them that I use to feed to my playlists/algorithms too. And anything I don't love love, or which seems to throw a wrench in my algorithm, gets taken out of my history.
And here is some fodder for you/your algorithm! Lately, along with Dirty Loops and Jacob Collier, I've been really enjoying:
Project MishraM (try "Cynic Machine" and “Loco Coko")
Pascuala Ilabaca y Fauna (try "Manikarnika" and "El Baile del Kkoyaruna")
    LAY (try "Lit" and "Honey")
Jessica Pratt (try "Life Is" and "This Time Around")
Charlotte Dos Santos (try "Patience" and "Filha Do Sol")
Fujii Kaze (try "Matsuri" and "Shinunoga E-Wa live at Nippon Budokan 2020")
Snotty Nose Rez Kids (try "Boujee Natives" and "No Dogs Allowed")
Rina Sawayama (try "XS" and "STFU")
Bloodywood (try "Dana Dan" cw, and "Jee Veerey")
Baby Queen (try "Wannabe" and "Narcissist")
Lido Pimienta (try "Coming Thru" and "Te Queria")
Hoàng Thùy Linh (try "Tứ Phủ" and "Diamond Cut Diamond")
Pehuenche (try "Por Ella" and "Dos Amantes" both live on vivo)
CHANMINA (try "Bijin" cw tho, and "Mirror")
Louis Cole (try "F it up" Live Sesh and "Things Will Fall Apart")
Kali Uchis (try "Te Mata" and "Telepatia")
Hemlocke Springs (try "Sever the Blight" and "Girlfriend")
Sofia Jannok (try "Snolejoninna" and "We Are Still Here" live at Musikhjalpen 2017)
Seppuku Pistols (try their Punk Island performance)
SsingSsing (try their Tiny Desk concert)
