Having lived through 2 mouse plagues in South Australia I understand what they are going through. Mice in their hundreds of thousands. The dogs don't bother chasing the little horrors after a while. The cats ditto. laying down poison does not seem to make a dent in the numbers. Houses have to be completely cleaned out every weekend. All the cupboards and drawers have to be emptied and everything washed. Food checked and thrown out if the mice have been, they leave little calling cards. Catching and killing mice in the bath every morning. The dead mice in the house found before they stink too much. On a farm the hay put away for bad years is fit for nothing. Saddles and horse gear is ruined by thousands of little teeth. They will eat just about anything. But, the best is yet to come. When the food starts to run out - they start to eat each other. Yes, you get dead 1/2 mice, bits of mice, bits of legs, bits of fur and of course the smell.

For a start ,for house owner you can surround your house perimeter with corrugated sheets or flat steel sheets at least 2'ft high to form a barrier that the mice cannot climb over. If needed make 2 barriers a few feet apart. Likewise for farmers , you can designate an area to create a similar barrier to store your produce. Make sure the barrier is tight leaving no gap.Thats my suggestion.
I know this is really selfish to say at this time but this concerns me greatly that grain products may rise in price drastically because of this. Im part of the 19% Australians that live in poverty. I rely on grain products to make cheap gruel. If grain prices rise I dont know what im going to eat.

Do you guys in Australia have Hantavirus or an equivalent? This is terrifying.
I lived on a farm in my youth and there is one lesson I learned. If you have a food source available, creatures are going to eat and nest in it. If your crop is just lying there in the open you will always have a serious problem. The Government needs to help them build facilities where the crop can be stored to minimize the damage and or get the crops to processing facilities quickly. I have seen other videos of Australian farms with bails of wheat/hay or whatever just sitting in an open field for weeks. No other method works. Our barns had tons of hay and just a few rodents a couple cats can handle. We never have grain or food stuffs just lying there in open areas. This issue with my cousins in the South is never ending.
