Mouse plague in NSW is an 'extraordinary disaster'

- While farmers have got money in their budget to deal with typical "vermin" or feral animals, the mouse plague is an "extraordinary" event which the government must respond to, according to NSW Farmers Vice President Xavier Martin.
"We've all got money in our budget to control wild pigs and foxes and wild dogs and that - but this is just an extraordinary event," he told Sky News.
"That's why it's really important that the government responds to it it's a disaster."
The New South Wales government has announced a $50 million support package to address the state’s mouse plague with at least eight stations to be established to treat grain in regional areas free of charge.
So a struggling farmer who has survived severe droughts, isbattling a mice plague and could possibly lose everything has not a single complaint
But there is a prince and a princess on a global mission trying to portray themselves as victims and get recognition for their true struggle

I do believe that some have gone begging the farmers to not kill the "poor defenceless mice"
In Thailand they were millions of pests ruining the rice fields. Then they got a bright idea of rearing thousands of ducks and letting them out in the rice fields. The ducks eat the pests, the shit became manure, and the rice fields gave a bounty. Like that They must be a way in Australia. man must have destroyed/extinct the natural predators of mice, so this problem.
They killed the cats i think
the mices just breed too fast because of abundance of food, in the wild predators can control the population but human farms are too efficient and mices take advantage too, the predators would be too full to hunt them all

Coyotes are just as much of a pest. Mice won't kill your new born lambs, goats, or even cattle.
@@LordFalconsword Yeah but while coyotes might get a few lambs or calves you don't have to worry about getting a sickness or starving because the mice destroyed your food supply. Mice bring disease. And at the numbers they have in this plague you can be sure nothing is going to be left to harvest or store. Coyotes are not near the risk or pest that mice are to humans.
@@samlsd9711 I've seen only two mice plagues in my life. And even though they were nasty they never over ran my home like they are in Australia. And while they damaged the crops and downgraded grain to cattle feed they didn't destroy the crops or wiped out MY stores of food in the house. Australia has no predators other than crocs. 30 or 40 years ago there was a similar problem in eastern Oregon, but it was jack rabbits. there were so many rabbits the road were paved with rabbit fur. The alfalfa fields were mowed down to nubs for about 100 yards in from the outer edges. My dad and I each shot 500 rounds of .22 ammo in one day.

Vets will make a fortune treating all the pets that eat the poisoned mice.
Most farms have working dogs that will eat mice and therefore will get poisoned.
Most farmers use wheat coated with Zinc Phosphide for that reason. It has a very low risk of secondary poisoning. We don't really see any increase in dead 'non-target species' (fox, cats, birds) in our area. The problem is the bait people in towns choose to use in their homes/yards.

Okay well NSW just slaughtered thousands of cats last year so no surprise there is a rat plague! You can not just wipe out a species and not expect for another to fill this void. Egypt worshipped the cat because cats saved their population from starvation by protecting the grains. Did NSW not think this through?
When you tamper with the balance of nature this is what you get, poisoning will ultimately just kill more predators. Importing native predators, trapping or starving them may be the best long term solution!
