I'm building a city right now. What I have found is that if you want an interesting road layout, start of with a couple of small towns and link them up with main roads. As your city grows, keep these main roads clear of any buildings. You can do that by fencing them off. That really seems to have done wonders for traffic. And then, when your 5 towns become one city, I put my CBD in the middle, and where the grids clash, you get to come up with fascinating solutions.
I keep starting over in cities skylines testing out new road layouts and grid designs. Over and over. :) I'm kind of looking for some repeatable pattern, that looks random, but isn't. Has a decent balance of buildings and open spaces for parks and services etc. and how to connect it to main roads. Kind of my great white whale to chase now. :D ... Anyways, more on topic to your idea I once started a map completely unlocked, deleted all high ways and rail roads and slowly started filling it in, with how I imagined the area would have developed over time. It was a sort of mental exercise. External connections would loosely represent ancient trading routes through the area. Protected natural harbors on the coast would become small fishing villages or trade harbors. Flat farmland would become farming villages. Villages around forest industry or ore. Roads would link the towns up and villages would spring up at cross roads servicing travelers. Etc. Of course this requires infinite money and everything unlocked, but there's a mod to make maps of the roads and trains and stuff in the game I think, so maybe that was an idea to make a historical run of cities skylines?
Speaking of which, don't forget the roundabouts! I put them into my very crowded city a little late and realized I should've been doing it sooner. Also add sliplanes just to help if things are backing up
Fantastic! I love the fast pace. For me, the hardest part of the game are the big decision points and planning, which don't need real time speed. A 20 minute video like this is so much easier to digest than 120 minutes of live gameplay.
And that is exactly why I made it this way. I cover all of this in a playthrough series…but I wanted something shorter and more concise…this is the result. I have other videos that dig deeper into game mechanics and strategies.

This was the first video I watched from this channel, and the one that made me subscribe... about 24 hours ago. The city I'm currently building is using the same map, but I'm having traffic flow and cash flow issues, and this video points out several easy fixes that I'd missed in my current build. I really do like this map; it's probably my first choice out of all of the original and DLC maps, and I have all of the core gameplay DLC packs (picked them all up on Steam's recent sale).
This is the best CS start guide ever! I always get stumped due to money, and then getting multiple challenges too quick at the start, this video is really helpful and teaches how to pace the development and layout. Very well done. Only thing I want to point out - I was confused when you said "Alternate Direct Route" - I thought you were talking about one way streets running in opposite direction. Then I realized you meant "Alternative" but it took a while to understand that.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you found it helpful! I have a more indepth series called _More Money Less Traffic_ that goes more deeply into all of this. You might find that useful too! Sorry! It took me a lot of time to record and edit this, and I’m still working on finishing other episodes in my other binge-worthy series, More Money Less Traffic.
I rewatched this after a few years and it just clicked to me that what you’re doing is basically like the “natural growth” movement that was started by some dude a decade ago sin simcity 4 since i’m currently playing it and trying the method myself. His mindset was the same “build stuff only when they are needed, badly sometimes.”
This is really fantastic. Thank you! I was playing for my first time without infinite money cheats (I know, welcome to the real world) the other night and barring a couple management issues was fairly consistently gaining $2800/week but I knew there were factors missing. Land value is something I hadn’t understood before.
So keen for this series. Got the little notification bell letting me know you finally uploaded another video. Love the content, keep up the good work 😁👍
Man I'm really rooting for a 2nd part of this video, mainly wondering how to transition to high density zones and how will he handle that office demand
Awesome video, I love watching how people approach the start of this game. One thing that has me perplexed is how your Average Traffic Flow is still ~80%+ at the end of the video. Out of curiosity I copied the city to the T but still, at best, only have 75% Average Traffic Flow. When I set up traffic as you did, I am getting a major backup at 7th and Ridge Streets as well as 15th and Arch Streets.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I can’t say what May have caused the differences, but I’ve noticed that I can have some really totally different results based on just randomness when I test something repeatedly…most times things go pretty average, but occasionally I’ll have a seriously big shift where things go extremely well or extremely poorly. Also, it could vary a bit based on DLCs…hard for me to say.
your knowledge of the game mechanics is amazing. Maybe a series that starts with a 'strategic' goal, shopping for the best map and assets that fit the goal and then go!
Thanks this helps a lot! I just got this game for myself on PC. I was trying to start a city where my only first water source is a lake and couldn't figure out how to stop the pollution, but now I think I got it. Also I played this years ago on my friends Playstation and I remember being overwhelmed then by everything so much so that my terrible road system came back to bite me in the butt haha. I think I will be able to get a much better start now. Just gonna restart my whole city that is dying from contaminated water. :D
LOL awesome! Happy to help! Definitely check out _More Money Less Traffic_ as well...that series will really help a new player since it dives right into the game mechanics and explains some great strategies for just about everything. Usually a city with contaminated water is in really big trouble...and tends to die if it's not caught right away.
Almost 2 weeks ago now. I realize that you have a IRL life and all, but are you going to keep this city/series going? I love it and definitely like where you are going with it! Thanks for all the great content, as always!
Very nice work, Lee. By building the town with you, I learned so much from key traffic management ideas to timely planned expansions. Probably not the first one asking, but when can we expect the next episode of Quick Metropolis?
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto I hope you see this additional comment. I've checked out the More Money Less Traffic series but I think this video was one of the very best for Cities Skylines that's been made by any channel. I have 350+ hours in Cities Skylines and so I know how the game works. But this was a very condensed 20 minutes that was follow-able and clearly articulated exactly what needed to be considered at each stage of the city development. There were no mods, no gimmicks and it wasn't 45 minutes or an hour - just a very sweet 20 minutes and *presto* a viable city. I hope you continue because I'd like to see what you're going to do about that traffic junction to the highway and that street it dumps on, where/how you place more education and configuring mass transit and pedestrian paths to prep for city growth. But again, the amount of information conveyed and the length was perfect.
@@waltblackadar4690 that is exactly what I was aiming for! Thank you! I will probably start work on the next part in a month or so at the earliest. I would like to get a long-form guide done so I can draw off of that for the condensed version.
Nice starting tips. You could also up the budget instead of building more service buildings. 4 recycling centers is huge for a city this size. Will you continue Reddington ? I really liked that carefully planned city.
Thank you! I have rarely found it necessary to increase tax revenues as so many do…the financial model of the game is really easy once you get the knack of it. And sadly, 4 recycling centers is pretty typical for a city this size…they take up a ton of real estate 😔 Keep your eyes open over the next few days, a new Reddington is coming!
Very nice sir! Please don't let perfection keep you from posting. The potential is already known - and you exceed expectations yet again. I just want to enjoy the videos, as often as you can make them. Surprise! You are a content creator now 😊

I liked it - the title made a promise that you kept! :D I would have used the curvature of the river to guide the parallel street though^^. I'm looking foreward for your next episode.
@@tatebevan9912 the TMPE mod is required to turn off despawning, and this (so far) is a fully vanilla build. I will keep despawning off in my Reddington series once I get to the automobile era.
I’m glad to help! It doesn’t need to be that hard to get your first city going…just stick with a grid for the most part, and get the knack of the game. Once you understand how things work…then do whatever you want and you’ll have a much better place to start troubleshooting.

I really love the way you built on this map
your knowledge of the game mechanics is amazing. Maybe a series that starts with a 'strategic' goal, shopping for the best map and assets that fit the goal and then go!
Thank you! I just started _this_ series…and you already want me to start _another_ one? 😂
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto just trying to get the queue going in the right direction
this is like the perfect start kit foundation. Thanks LEEE!
I’m so glad you liked it! I’m excited to get apart 2 out there!
Tho i know how the game works for most of it, always good to get reminded by it from time to time.
Great video overall! Love the humor in it 👍
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Man, you make this look so easy! Great video!
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto I will definitely watch that playlist! Thanks again.
As someone who is new to this game, there are some really awesome tips in here!
Yes! Mission accomplished! Glad it helped you out!
This episode was MOVING! Nice work Lee! 👍
I’m glad it MOVED you to comment! Thanks so much!
Almost 2 weeks ago now. I realize that you have a IRL life and all, but are you going to keep this city/series going? I love it and definitely like where you are going with it! Thanks for all the great content, as always!
Neat! Welcome back, Leeeeeeee!
Thank youuuuu! Glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice work, Lee. By building the town with you, I learned so much from key traffic management ideas to timely planned expansions. Probably not the first one asking, but when can we expect the next episode of Quick Metropolis?
Great to see you back Lee!
Really like this guide. I hope this continues.
I’m so glad you liked it! It will! Be sure to check out More Money Less Traffic if you haven’t seen it! I have more of those coming soon…
This is really helpful, especially for players who just got the game recently.
And sadly, 4 recycling centers is pretty typical for a city this size…they take up a ton of real estate 😔
Keep your eyes open over the next few days, a new Reddington is coming!
Great video, great pace, great info, great recommendations, and no fluff....love it and thank you!
I aim to please! Glad this was great for you!
Finally, a tutorial thats simple for my mind to understand
@@MasonWittenberg Glad you found it helpful!
Very nice sir! Please don't let perfection keep you from posting. The potential is already known - and you exceed expectations yet again. I just want to enjoy the videos, as often as you can make them.
Surprise! You are a content creator now 😊
Thanks for your encouragement… 🫣 I’m still surprised this many people watch!
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto Haha! I bet - I can't even imagine something I do getting interest. But when you make something good, people notice!
This guide really did help me. Lots of good basic ideas.
@@Benry675 glad to hear it!
played this game a year ago. this is one of the best games ever for raising a town
Indeed it is!
Great to have another series from you Lee. Cheers.
This is great, really enjoyed the layout and strategy!! My favorite beginner’s video 🙏
😊 glad you enjoyed it!
Lee, you killed it. I'm so enthralled by this. Very smart and beautiful. Nice! New subscriber here.
Again Amazing
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much! Glad to have you 😊
Love seeing the Philly-inspired city! Can't wait to see what's next.
Did you think this lived up to its billing? Let me know! It’s at least the best video I’ve done for starting a city…for whatever that’s worth lol 😂
If you enjoyed this video...go check out MORE MONEY LESS TRAFFIC where I start out with a video on CITY LAYOUT!

Quick question do you play with traffic set to not DeSpawn? I'm trying to get better moving into this style of play.
@@wurfelumdiewelt5301 I have my reasons for why I built the way I built 😁 just trying to keep things simple for now.
Thank you this is helpful!
I am working on my 3rd attempt at a city the last day or so.
I’m glad to help! It doesn’t need to be that hard to get your first city going…just stick with a grid for the most part, and get the knack of the game. Once you understand how things work…then do whatever you want and you’ll have a much better place to start troubleshooting.
your tips on traffic management were a life saver, thank you!
Awesome! There’s more to come!
Great content as always, and also a great way to make us remember why we all love it so much!! 😁
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dammit, Lee!! Now I want to re-start my latest city, again! :D Seriously though, great video, as always, full of excellent tips for C:S-addicts.
This man is playing city skylines like "How It's Made," and I'm 💯 here for it
This is amazing! These tips are so useful as a beginner tysm
Awesome to hear! I’m so glad this helped you!
Always fantastic content. Loves the fluidity of the build.
