I've been playing this game since 2015 and only recently realized (like a week ago) that different map sizes have different (edit) population milestones.
Agreed. I’m still pretty new to skylines. Only got like 15 hours on it. I enjoy these series cause I take a lot away from it and use it on my own cities.
I've put well over a thousand hours into this game, and I ALWAYS love a good beginners' guide. One can learn so much with that Beginner's Mind. ;) So glad I found you! :D
I'm not a noob though for some reason I really enjoy beginner series. There are always new city planning concepts, strategies, and how the builder uses the space and topography to consider. I really appreciate your thought process and the calm presentation style. You've earned yourself a new subscriber. I look forward to exploring your catalog.
I played without much help to start but found your guide and realized I was missing alot and I restarted my city encorporating alot of the stuff I learned here - very helpful.
Ive been playing for a while now but I still learned stuff. This is probably one of the best beginner tutorials or this game available. Most other channels forget how overwhelming just the toolbar alone can be when you first play and skip right over what the different tools do and how they can be utilized to better your city or just improve the quality of life for the player. Anyways, great playlist so far, keep it up!
I rarely comment, but this series is fantastic. I came here for pointers on starting a city. I've been playing CS for YEARS but starting a city has always been my crux. I atarted watching this to help me start a city but i stayed for the attention to detail, specific explanations, different layout ideas, and the calm demeanor. Fantastic series
Nice video :D Great tips! I just wanted to point out: The green area around city services like clinics and police stations are not it's coverage but the area that is been affected positively towards land value. Cims can be pick up by an ambulance even if they are on a house at the edge of the map, as long as there is a way to get there. Sick cims will also go by foot if it's on walkable distance but the green area only affects land value, which is required to get higher tiers of buildings.
20:51 - Road going vehicles actually do drive slower when weather affects the road. When it starts to rain, the speed slowly decreases down to a certain minimum. Once it stops raining, the roads slowly dry up and as such vehicle speed increase again up to the speed limit. Walking and cycling is also based on the age of the citizens. Children are slower, teens and young adults are fastest, adults are average and senior citizens are slowest. Havent tested weather effect on walking and cyling yet. The best way to test it is to use the first person camera mod which displays speed.
I'm fairly new at C:S, and I think I have a pretty good starting game, but the transition where we need to upgrade the main arterial and fix traffic issues that stem from increased industry logistics is where I struggle with, I hope you can get to that in this series!
One of the main reasons to create the arterial with no zoning on it is to help the city as it grows. The reason I put the industry area next to the highway is so it can have it's own connection probably on this next episode 😀 we will go over traffic issues though and how to avoid them. This is one of the hardest parts about this game
Even though I've been playing CS since release I still love watching beginner videos. I really like the couplet you made with the wide space. Looks great and spaces things very nicely. Can't wait for more episodes.
This is a great starting guide, I do wish that someone could do a beginners guide with an English style of city planning with less grids and more ring roads and roundabouts. But very engaging and knowledgeable :)
Thank you Biffa! This is a really awesome moment for me! I have looked up to you and watched your content for almost 4 years now. A lot of what I know about this game comes from you! 😀
This build is epic. I will now binge the rest to see how it's grown. I just recently started the game and this has helped me so much. Definitely will be looking into expansions.
I just got into this game and just went wild Sim City style in my first ever city... now after getting used to a few features I am looking to start a fresh, much more realistic city. And this tutorial seems to be the most amazing gone out there to get me guided along the way. Thank you so much for your efforts!
I've been playing this game casually for years , and usually bored after sometime cause i do usually play cluelessly. Checked lots of videos before over the years but man, you did an art for creating a city not just a maximum benefit style guide ; showing how to get enjoy for creating a city and manage it. Good job really well done with this video.
I really enjoy the way you describe what you're doing and why. I am not a beginner player, just looking for some good inspiration from other Cities:Skylines players. I've already learned from you. Looking forward to continuing this series! I have a buddy looking to get into this game, I'll have to recommend this Playlist 👍
man thank you for spreading your knowledge my friend!! iv been lost trying to figure out this game for months and just couldnt get a good start, i only watched this video for a quick idea and ended up watching the hole video and am now gonna keep watching as i wanna see what your city grows to be ;)
Really love your various series. You deserve a lot more subscribers than you currently have. Hopefully this series helps your channel really grow. This pilot episode has done a really good job of explaining the early game dynamics and fundamentals.
Thank you Azure! I did my best to explain everything but not be to overwhelming. there is a lot to this game. It's going to be fun exploring this one and seeing where it goes! 😀
I think it's great that you cover the very essentials of everything. Even detailing how to use the road tools. Think it is super important for noobs. Great videos man. new sub
Fun video, mister City - "we're gonna go ahead" - Zilla! I'm gonna go ahead and click Like. I learned more than I thought. Fresh into the game, I made the mistake to have my city too far away from the main highways, and I did shy away from deleting / replacing buildings to implement roads. So I had to expand more and more. Also, I kept adding way too many water drains; the ocean was so dirty - but it's alright, the stream of water took care of it!
I am a beginner in city skylines. I don't make city's better but this video helped me a lot to improve my city and manage my city. You deserve a lot of subscribers by the way you got a new sub!!!
You can make a pedestrian crosswalk by changing part of a road to another type I learned it from a RUclipsr named Imperatur. He has a great tips playlist for vanilla players.
Ah the classic elder care facility basically across the street from the cemetery. Efficiency at its finest! At least you blocked the view with a bunch of trees!
Excellent video, I've always preferred the one way couplet city start in the vanilla game over the standard roundabout start. Really easy to follow, I'm a veteran at this game but I learned a lot from it.
Thank you Diana! I almost use the couplet start to a fault. It leaves the door open for so much versus other entrances. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 😀
You had me at "OldTown". That's my usual first district name as well. Subscribed. I like your style! Good pace for building speed and narrative for my taste (experienced yet untalented builder), but it might be a bit too fast for a newbie. The information you're providing is really well focussed and helpful, but it's a lot! Looking forward for the next one.
Typed "cities skylines" into the search bar and this was the 3rd video. The first two were from channels I'm already subbed to. The whole reason for my searching for a game I play and already follow like 5 channels for was to find someone new. I'm excited to see what your content is like!
I thought this was great and can’t wait until the nest episode, loved the couplet, I’ve always done roundabouts and get a lot of traffic build up, so will definitely try this
I've been trying to play it for a very long time but I always give up at the beginning. Not because it's bad, but I can't keep up with all the possibilities of building. Thank you for this series, it will help me a lot.
Amazing! Been playing for years now and I love watching a let’s play/ beginner guilds and copying them and put my own twist on some of the things you do! 👍
New here! Not only to the channel, but to the game as well, and pretty new to the genre itself as well. This is also the very first video I've ever watched about this game. Bought it 3 days ago or so on sale on Steam, after having played it a short few hours on the free weekend offer, and this is a series I'll be hanging onto to watch! I only got the deluxe edition for right now which has 2 dlcs so anything outside of those I won't need yet, but I learned a lot just in this one that I was unaware of. Thanks for this! Liked and subbed! Looking forward to more!
I just started playing and I'm kind of surprised by the lack of tutorial, even an optional one, in the game (the tutorial in the form of those tooltips is hardly a tutorial imo). I have no idea what I'm doing, what I should aim for, how to design the city, etc., at least games like Pharaoh and Master of Olympus: Zeus have tutorial scenarios that explain what they recommend, so you can understand the mechanics and begin designing your city building off the things you're shown in the tutorial, that work with the game's mechanics but fit your style more. There seems to be none of that in this game! I am so thankful for series like yours (I've currently watched yours and one other), it's truly helped me understand things to look out for while planning and building my city. You've made the game much more approachable, understandable, and enjoyable. Thank you!
Residents do not start whining the moment you raise taxes over 12%. When reaching Little Hamlet the first thing I do is set my taxes at 14%. Residents will start whining once their buildings start levelling up. The longer it takes for them to level up the longer you can rake in excess taxes. Same applies to commercial and industrial. Once residents start moaning just wait until the icon goes red and then drop it 1%. Next to complain will be commercial so do the same. Finally industry will whine. After a while and when residents level up further they will complain once more so you drop residential taxes to 12% when the icon goes red. Do the same for commercial and industrial when they whine. By the time you have dropped all 3 tax sectors back to 12% you will be past Boom Town and should have no financial worries. One side note. If you use the specialised buildings they are already at the highest level and will complain pretty quickly. However, those buildings which start at level 1 and build up will take a fair while to complain and you can happily generate extra income for the first few milestones.
I’m fairly experienced with CS but you gained a subscriber today from me! I’ll be back for sure. You can never learn too much playing this game, endless possible cities, love it ❤
This is the first RUclips video I saw on this game in Dec. of '22. Thanks to you I am now subscribed to several content creators for this game and have watched hours upon hours of videos. I went and purchased the game and all of the available DLC add-ons. Thanks for the tutorial and new online hobby...!!!
Yes, Overcharged has a fantastic beginners guide that may be better suited. 😀 Sorry again, I do plan to make my pacing a bit easier to follow for new people
Abraços do Brasil!
In the steam workshop they have a FREE road which I use to begin with. Literally gives you as much road as you want and doesn’t drain your cash so you can layout as big as u want with no expense until u lay down your water pipes.
I started this game, and quickly realized I don't know what I'm doing. I watched one beginner's playthrough, and tried emulating it, but it didn't work out. I always fall into the "Do Too Much At Once" trap. The one thing I had fun with, though, was renaming my city and the streets (though I took quite a few liberties when it came to the street names). My city's name was Brillville, and my street names were Burnett Boulevard, Korman Circle, Lawrence Lane, Conway Way, Waggoner Way, Jones Avenue, Dolenz Drive, Nesmith Street, Tork Turnpike (see what I mean?), Ludden Lane, White Way, Rayburn Road, Somers Street, Reilly Road, and McCall Avenue. (and I have a feeling there are going to be very few people here who will understand these names)
Steam says I have 270ish hours in Cities... which I suspect is wrong and on the low side as I've been playing since launch.... but I've been playing for a few weeks here and there over the course of 7 years so I've never deeply absorbed the principles of what makes and ok city that will develop predictable problems vs. a city that actually has much better headroom to grow from the start. So as a not really beginner player, thank you! It's being able to see how you set things up and the finer details of your workflow that has been excellent for me to get more enjoyment out of my own playing. It really helps break me out of assumptions of how systems may or may not work to hear fluid descriptions of what is going on and what to think about. Really interested in seeing the later growth phase episodes as the mechanics of all the DLC get layered in.
Thanks for breaking this down for me! It helps me when I know what people are enjoying about the vids! I'm trying my best to explain everything as best I can!
I’ve been plying for a while now and can create some nice successful cities but it’s great to find guides like this because it’s gives me new ideas of what I can do or what I can fix to improve my next city
Also, as a beginner, first thing one should do when starting a city (after your first road is layed down) is to lower the budget for roads, water, and electricity. This will save you some starting cash. Just don't forget to adjust the budget back up as your city grows.
I am so proud of you. New people to your video are going to be amazed at what you build. (I stumbled on Factorio and lost my life, but I'm still a follower and will eventually get back to building CS.) Well done, my friend. Glad you are keeping up the good work. 👍
Thank you Don! I still think about you and your comments often! I appreciate your support! I hope all is well! I have never played factorio maybe I should check it out
@@CityZilla Indeed, all is well. I'm going to follow you on this build, for sure. Looks like it is going to be great. Your videos are absolutely top-shelf professional. You took my advice and took the top off it. As to Factorio--DON"T! They don't call it "Cracktorio" for no reason. lol Best wishes, and continued success. I'll be watching.
You have no idea how many cities I have started and abandoned, how many videos I have followed but this was the easiest to follow along road layout which is always my problem. Thank y ou
Can't wait till next Friday. This will be the first series I follow from start to finish I think. Tho I'm bad I remembering and finding the series again so hoping I don't get behind.
Imagine City Skylines and GTA mixed together. Being able to walk around and cause mayhem or participate as a respectful citizen in the cities you build yourself would be next level in my opinion.
Just wanted to let you know that it IS possible to make crosswalks without mods. When you change road types from one to another it will create a crosswalk. I set my neighborhoods up just like yours with paths in between, then break the road where the path is and fill in with another type of road.
I know this video is a few yrs old but I just wanted to let you know that I really do like this series. I'm going to follow your roads, but switch it around somewhat with the buildings, paths and such. This game still has it and IMO Spanx CS2 hilariously. I'll comment as I progress through this series. Peace and Chicken Grease
I'm new to this game, but from what I can tell you would love notjustbikes, he is a canadian guy that moved to the netherlands because of car dependency in the us and canada. Lots of the stuff he talks about are perfectly in line with your opinions and mine when it comes to pedestrians in urban environments and how badly stroads affect us. Thanks for this video!
Thank you for having this series. I'm a new player with many restarts 😮 Hope you don't mind @CityZilla if I copy your city just to get me started. Loving the idea that this is the start of a series 😊 I may actually be able to build a city.
I really love the design, my problem is learning how to start a city and continue it with the same strength it started with. This series actually has helped me visualize a bit more.
Just bought this game today oon sale oon steam.... thought maa wee town was wicked but after watching this mine looks like an absolute bombsite haha. You've got some serious planning skills sir 👌
41:13 I couldn’t help but notice that you zoned residential housing on your couplet. Very informative video though, I always seem to find tidbits of useful information from videos like these. Well done sir 👍
I just noticed something…… If you buy certain tiles on Windfield (Parklife DLC) and Two Rivers (base game/Vanilla), the two maps link together like puzzle pieces.
Hi Awesome start to city looking forward to plenty more I will be following your build on my comsole.I needed something like this to keep my mind busy have had a tough past week losing my best four legged friend for 14 years he was all I had really this will help me keep busy and also get back into playing cities skylines
Great video, nice explanations too. Not overly Americanised but also some nice nuggets of info about American cities and their pro's/cons. Just gained a UK sub
If I'm not mistaken. When you get the first milestone. At that time you get taxes. I tried rewatching but I didn't see if you adjusted the taxes. Usually to help, taxes can be turned up to 12% without complaint. Instead of the standard 9%. From there gameplay becomes much more fluid.
I wander if I took that part out. I don't believe I did but I do go over this just a little after we reach the first milestone! Thanks for letting me know! 😀
It is very useful. And what if put some small commercial zone inside the residential area so the residents will not need to go far away to buy their stuffs.
This is perfect I just started on this map a couple days ago, so far its the best I've done yet, but I did not know about that mass death thing, I may have a problem later I always pause while building and I'm always building at the start. Also sounds like I'm being too impatient so I may restart with a similar setup to this. I've never tried the separate one ways to the highway. I always make a round about, but I like this.
Yeah, death waves can really get you later on. You end up having to place a ton of cemetaries just to make up for it. Happy to hear you enjoyed the episode! I am a firm believer in the coulplet. It's a great way to funnel traffic through your city!
I've been playing this game since 2015 and only recently realized (like a week ago) that different map sizes have different (edit) population milestones.

Thanks for the tip! I have used this strategy in challenges before but never while doing a city build
I’m fairly experienced with CS but you gained a subscriber today from me! I’ll be back for sure. You can never learn too much playing this game, endless possible cities, love it ❤
Thanks Hitsauce! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Hey, I love your play style and I love vanilla / lightly moded cities. So this series will be perfect for me 😅
Thanks Victor! Happy to hear you are enjoying it. My usual series are a bit heavy on the mods. Glad to be trying something new again!
I got the game a week ago! My population is over a hundred thousand but sometimes have trouble with the roads so you definitely helped me on that!
Oh good! I'm glad I could help a bit! Glad you are enjoying the content!
Hii hopefully this blows up :)
Thank you! : ) I hope so too. It was an enjoyable episode to make! I can't wait to see how this city turns out!
It did actually
Is that a terrorist joke?
I would hate it if their city blew up
@@operationdeadmemes3498 HAHAHA!!!
I'm glad you are enjoying it! There are some incredible creators out there.
Sorry, but as a newbie, this video was WAY too fast paced to even get close to following. 😥
I'm sorry to hear that!
watch overcharged eggs noobs guide series if you are a very beginner. he explains how to use all the tools
@@allhailstrat Thanks for the suggestion. 🙂
Yes, Overcharged has a fantastic beginners guide that may be better suited. 😀 Sorry again, I do plan to make my pacing a bit easier to follow for new people
You are the Bob Ross of Cities. I love it!
I’ve only just started the series, but I can tell this is going to be FANTASTIC.
Dude. I don't know how you don't have more subscribers. This is an awesome Cities video.
Thanks Andrew! Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for having proper subtitles. It makes it much easier to follow what youre doing vs the auto captions.
Abraços do Brasil!
Thank you! I'm glad you are enjoying it!
In the steam workshop they have a FREE road which I use to begin with. Literally gives you as much road as you want and doesn’t drain your cash so you can layout as big as u want with no expense until u lay down your water pipes.
Sounds like a good tool for city starts. Thanks for the tip!
@@CityZilla look up the planning roads. They're a collection of free, unzoneable and low speed roads that you can use for, well.., planning.
Thank you!
Thanks Don!
Took me a couple of days to be able to watch this. What a great idea for a new series! Even your grids are more interesting than mine 🤪
Thanks A J! It took me some time to formulate. In glad it turned out well 😅
I love this. Been working CS1 for years now. Keep on posting
I think, this is FANTAAAAAAAAAAASTIC!!! Man! Love how you saying that! City looks very good!
You're an artist 🤩🤩 It feels so alive and so natural
Thank you!
You have no idea how many cities I have started and abandoned, how many videos I have followed but this was the easiest to follow along road layout which is always my problem. Thank y
ou
I'm glad you find it helpful!
One word comes to mind-> FANTASTIC. I'll be watching thi again, I couldn't absorb all of the information. Thank You, Sir. Subscribed.☮
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
This was an excellent tutorial. Honestly perfect way to start your city. Nice work and congrats on the video for going viral. Very happy for you
Thanks Sportmonkey! 😀
Can't wait till next Friday. This will be the first series I follow from start to finish I think. Tho I'm bad I remembering and finding the series again so hoping I don't get behind.
I'm going to do my best to make it a regular thing for fridays to make it a little easier to follow!
Imagine City Skylines and GTA mixed together. Being able to walk around and cause mayhem or participate as a respectful citizen in the cities you build yourself would be next level in my opinion.
That would be really fun if you were able to do that!
one word to describe this episode??? fantastic! ^^
I like the channel and I like how the elder care is "convieniently located" next to the cemetaries. :)
Why is every cities skylines RUclipsr have the most calming voice ever I want to know why!!!
Hahahaha
Just wanted to let you know that it IS possible to make crosswalks without mods. When you change road types from one to another it will create a crosswalk. I set my neighborhoods up just like yours with paths in between, then break the road where the path is and fill in with another type of road.
Thanks for the tip!
I'm not new but I hope I'll learn a whole bunch from this series, given how good your previous cities have been
Thanks Saucy! I'm going to do my best to bring something as much as I can!
Just found this video, and this is FANTASTIC!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words!
This video probably get me back to the game, been trying to play but didnt know where to start. Thanks for the tips and ideas
Glad it helped out. Let me know if you have any questions.
I have watched him as well as a few of the other city planning niche channels. Very insightful!
Just started trying to play Cities and this is beyond helpful.
I'm glad it's helpfull!
Drinking game! 😂 every time he says “FANTASTIC”🎉
Whenever you say "nice" it reminds me of SteveMRE. :P
Also: great series of videos! Subbed.
Just found your channel today and subscribed! I love how you play it. Keep up the good work mate ;)
Great tip about the sims dying at the same time. 😮 This is currently an issue on my primary map. I really enjoyed this episode. On to the next! 🎉
you're def worth subscribing to. i like the layout and planning and the way u explain it. a very big help to enjoy the game, thank u!
Thank you!
Thank you for having this series.
I'm a new player with many restarts 😮 Hope you don't mind @CityZilla if I copy your city just to get me started. Loving the idea that this is the start of a series 😊 I may actually be able to build a city.
No worries! That's what this series is for! Glad you are enjoying it!
I really love the design, my problem is learning how to start a city and continue it with the same strength it started with. This series actually has helped me visualize a bit more.
It can be tough even for me. The best thing to do is just start
Just bought this game today oon sale oon steam.... thought maa wee town was wicked but after watching this mine looks like an absolute bombsite haha. You've got some serious planning skills sir 👌
Thank you!. It takes time to get there. Don't quit
Great video! It was very helpful and informative!!!! Can't wait to see how far you will go with the city!!!
Thanks Tim! I think it's going to be a fun series!
@@CityZilla you're welcome man! Can't wait to see more! I've found something that might interest you..I left it on your discord 👀
Party mode: Do a shot whenever you hear 'fantastic'
Stomach pump mode: Do a shot whenever you hear the above or 'go ahead'
When I close my eyes and listen to your voice, I can't help but hear Owen Wilson (same accent?) . All you'd have to say to seal the deal is "wow!" 😁
Haha in real life I say wow a lot lol
41:13 I couldn’t help but notice that you zoned residential housing on your couplet. Very informative video though, I always seem to find tidbits of useful information from videos like these. Well done sir 👍
Thanks Grant! I'm happy to hear that! Yeah, I messed up but ended up switching it back when I was detailing. Thanks for pointing that out though
I just noticed something……
If you buy certain tiles on Windfield (Parklife DLC) and Two Rivers (base game/Vanilla), the two maps link together like puzzle pieces.
Hi Awesome start to city looking forward to plenty more I will be following your build on my comsole.I needed something like this to keep my mind busy have had a tough past week losing my best four legged friend for 14 years he was all I had really this will help me keep busy and also get back into playing cities skylines
I'm sorry to hear that. Losing a pet is very hard. I hope my videos can help even just a little.
@@CityZillathank you I'm sure you're video's will help I love cities skylines one of the best ever made
It's a good game! It's crazy to see how much it and the community have evolved over the years!
I have a discord if you ever want to pop in and say hi. The link is in the description!
@@CityZilla Totally agree keeps getting better as it ages.Cities skilines 2 will amazing once that finally comes out
Great video, nice explanations too. Not overly Americanised but also some nice nuggets of info about American cities and their pro's/cons. Just gained a UK sub
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
I’ve been following along on the xbox version and its been a lot of fun! Really enjoy the explanation of your thought process. Thank you!
Welcome aboard!
not new to gaming, but new to *this* game! it's quite an intimidating endeavor to take this game on, so thank you for this video :)
Welcome aboard!
That couplet is genius. Later on, a metro system could be built right under that Main Street between the couplet, or a tram network.
Kindly contact Mr. Novogratz.... For trading assistance and information 👆👆👆
Which map is this please?
