This - just... THIS. I've been playing city builders since Sim City 2000 in the early 90s and though I had it DOWN. I bought this game two years ago, played it for 27 minutes, couldn't figure out why I couldn't connect to the highway properly and gave up, lol. I can't wait to try again with this tutorial!
I know it's been said a million times, but this video is just so helpful for someone learning the game. I got in over my head with mods and expansions, and found myself coming back here to practice my fundamentals. Thanks so much!
I'd love a version of this for European cities/cities that don't follow grids. When I first got into C:S I built using grids (despite being from Germany and a city that's "naturally" grown over centuries and is basically a lot of now interconnected villages). It was super easy, but also quickly took the enjoyment out of the game. I try to build more naturally feeling cities now, but it's always a very bumpy process. I know that is to be expected specifically because these cities aren't built with maximum efficiency in mind, but surely there's something I could do better. One of the things I struggled with was the vanilla street styles in C:S clearly being US-inspired, and one street type is limited to one speed limit etc.
I’ve seen several “basics” videos as many of my cities struggle with various problems, but this is by far the best beginners guide I’ve come across. I can tell from the first episode that this a series worth following and channel worth subscribing to. Your organization and break down is impeccable. Keep up the great work! I like it in general, but I do think he is setting himself up for problems down the line when it comes to traffic. Two big things I would change. 1. The start for all cities off the highway is always awkward, but what I like to do is "bring the highway into town" using the small one way road tool. You can upgrade those to actual highways later, and create a proper service interchange to your first main road. I then use that first main road basically the way this guy does mostly with commercial districts. 2. I like the grid as a starting point, but that is a lot of intersections from local roads to the collector road which will eventually be the arterial road. It isn't an issue now, but it will be when the population gets to 12k-20k.
@@jimland4359 that’s a fair assessment. However, traffic in CS is inherently flawed. After a certain point you can count on traffic being borked. Even with traffic mods it’s still a pain because the computer naturally follows the shortest route regardless of heavy traffic. It’s a compounding problem with no real solution. Hopefully they fix it in CS 2
@@jimland4359 I've had multiple cities with roads like this (they're very Australian, we here in Perth only have one major separated freeway through our cities and then as a ring road, so we have big collectors with intersections). I use TMPE and no despawning and my traffic is always 80+. Turning off the traffic lights is a big one, since if you don't have enough traffic to justify them stopping, you're just needlessly slowing them down.
Just wanted to thank you and tell you how informative, easy to understand and totally enjoyable. I'm a 60 year old sims 4 and Simcity player. Your video popped up as recommended, loved it bought the game and have been watching and playing with you non stop for the past 4 days. 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you so much for sharing your work.
I have been playing CS for 2-3 years, but still I like watching these types of videos. And that's what I like about this game because of the diversity of how people start a city and how everyone plays this game, it so different.
Pro tip if you reach busy town milestone: If you want more income for your city then consider activating policies that double the amount of sales from commercial zones and double the goods from industrial zones. these 2 policies alone can make you Megabucks. for your city Note: yes I am a starter player in Cities Skylines
As an architect, I really appreciate the way you layout the grid planning for this city and as well as consideration for the natural landscape of the area.
I'm actually happy that it's not just only me who thinks you are the Bob Ross of cities Skylines, truly amazing and calming videos bro. You deserve my sub.
hey dude, I'm not sure if you still read the comments of these old videos, but I just wanna say that I've recently started cities skylines and I am loving your guides, not only are they super helpful and nice, but I just love your general vibe, you talk in a really calm and soothing voice, when the zoning got weird at the start you just said that "it's ok, it doesn't have to be perfect", and I really liked that, you're like the bob ross of cities skylines
I've never even thought to use dirt roads to get off the ground. I love how many different approaches there are to a starting city. I've gotten my cues from other content creators early on in the game's life, and I'm trying to really relearn how to play so I can finally make a fully fledged city in this game, instead of struggling unincorporated towns I normally come up with.
So you’re telling me that when I start my city, I *shouldn’t* build a $40,000 double-decker roundabout interchange? Your rationality frightens and intrigues me.
You arguably have one of the most professional RUclips channels. I think I’ve ever come across just in the intro alone having everything set out clear goals. It’s like I’ve never seen another RUclipsr with the ability to create infinite amount of content from a game and make it an actual professional career like you do.
Just picked up city skylines and I must say I was always afraid of playing it due to the complexity but with this series I feel very confident! Thanks mate!
You're like the Bob Ross of Cities Skylines. Loved the vid. Definitely helped me learn the basics easier. Wish the game had a tutorial mode, but this works just as well. Thank you!
Bob Ross. He was our go to here in the UK during lockdown. His serene voice a perfect match for his unfolding alpine landscapes. He's practically a household name now, whereas before March 2020, he was virtually unheard of here. S'funny how things turn out...
I used to always love playing this game but all my town would fail not an hour into playing. It put me off the game for years. This video, your knowledge, is genuinely invaluable to me :) Thanks so much for creating this incredible series!!
I am just starting this game after trying many months ago. and i have to say, this is the best guide i have seen. I was so overwhelmed at first. thank you!
Great many tips for a beginner like myself - the road grid issue you had in the beginning though, I think it was because when you started expanding Main Street it wasn't at a perfect 180º angle from the highway but slightly tilted; about the pollution in industrial zones I've realized it's better to place the landfills on the outskirts because they don't spread pollution, so the core area of the district can have all the factories and plants - I'm sure you know that, just something that the planning here made me think of but again, this is just the beginning of your series. Looking forward to watching the other episodes and dabble with the DLCs - very much hooked to the game already -, thanks again!
Sim City veteran here, I just bought this game and feel a bit overwhelmed. Thank you for this video, I love your teaching style. I plan to watch your other videos over time.

This was such a relaxing guide, thank you so much! Also love the fact that after 500 residents I went ahead of the tutorial a little bit and guess what, I build exactly the way you did! That means you are also an excellent teacher!
Hello... I was wondering how an American city planner felt about the Barcelona super blocks. They are almost the exact opposite to the classic American road layout.
You can join the discord to join in the discussion. Its really active and city planner goes through all pings directed at him and answers them. And there are a lot of other real life city planners there
I think it's a fantastic idea! We really lack the sorts of pedestrian spaces available in most European cities. Barcelona has given us a pattern that we could implement, if only there was the will. I think it'll take some significant cultural shifts to make it happen here, but all we really need is one successful example in a "normal" place for it to take off!
I love the way you imagine the citizens living in the city, placing little pockets of comercial activities, and imagining people going to pizzerias or barbershops
After only a week after purchase, Cities: Skyline fascinates and frustrates me but you have made the transition from "complete newbie" to "educated newbie" a smooth one. Thank you for your videos!
Cities skylines is often a very overwhelming game to newcomers, but the way you explain and play is the exact opposite! You are amazing and I've fallen in love with your content
Your video series is amazing, nothing overproduced, just someone who is extremely knowledgeable about the game spitting straight facts for the entire runtime, one of the best tutorial series I have ever had the pleasure of viewing.
Really like the start of a new community. I always love the tropical maps. I didn’t think to turn off road length snapping to get that path from the park to work. Can’t wait to see the sprawl take place!
Thanks for your detailed yet easy to follow instructions, pal. I just picked this up on Epic for free Thursday and was so overwhelmed without a proper tutorial to speak of in-game. That's a big oversight imo, which is why I've got so much from this. I'm sure this will help as I sunk so many hours into the older SimCity games ages ago. I loved getting to that moment where my city began to thrive on its own once I'd finally mastered the mechanics properly without resorting to loans so much.
I'm brand new to the game and this was EXTREMELY helpful!! I was feeling overwhelmed by the level of customization this game has but it's really great to start off with some guidelines. Now my city is growing so fast :) THANK YOU
I wanna point out I have just started playing. I have been watching your videos at home, while on the bus to work. Your Step by step guides are amazing. I fumbled around having no clue what I was doing and watching your video. I am doing way better than I have before so legit... Thank You very much.
I, uh... ended up here early? I think the Tutoria playlist isn't private/unlisted, so I was able to see the video when I just happened to check your channel for a playlist. For what it's worth: I think this video is going to be incredibly helpful. Wish I'd seen it years ago when I had no idea what I was doing.
How much of help is this I cannot explain. I am currently binge watching your videos and trying to build my own city which I started just yesterday. Thank you so much for this videos.
I’m brand new to this game (late to the party) and this has been the most helpful guide so far! I reached 20,000 pop and have an infrastructural nightmare. I wish I saw this sooner! Thank you so much for doing this!
Thank you so much for your Vanilla builds! As a console player it is refreshing to see a game played with out move it and traffic manager. It really does help give me ideas of ways to fix my cities traffic and other issues!
I'd like to suggest an extra episode explaining road hierarchy (maybe even transit hierarchy). Admittedly there are enough such videos about that here, and I think City Planner has touched on it with one of his own, but it'd be nice to have something standalone to add to the playlist and is in line with a theme of this series - what each feature is about and how to best utilize it to improve your city
@@overredrover9430 He did a video before but I agree. I'd love to see more diving into HOW that theory is properly implemented in the game including what roads to use for which or how to identify which roads you should be using for which, as well as identifying which roads should be which type. The previous video he did on it was nice but all very much heavy on theory and little on practice. Same with the zoning and land use video he did. Showed a bit more of how to implement individual zoning types into the game but not much on the best ways to integrate those various types in composition.
I’m looking forward to seeing how your City grows, I’ve just recently played on this map ( Vanilla no Mods) and I reached a population of 100K, it will be interesting how you deal with traffic problems, good luck.

This is my most-played game on Steam - 175 hours. It's one of my biggest comfort games whenever I boot up my PC and has been since I bought this game on launch, and this video has been everything I've looked for. I've never been good at the game. I simply watch my city become unbearably overwhelming then I cut and start again - always playing blind. This video helped me do it in a way that matters/works. Thank you!
I just want to add my thanks. This is THE BEST guide I've seen yet for this game. Your explanations for everything you're doing are so helpful. I've tried this game a couple times in the past but without much success. This is the first time I've had a long-term balanced budget. Thank you!
I’ve always wanted to enjoy this game but couldn’t get past a lot of the mechanics, thank you for making easy beginnings guide; I’ve finally built a functioning city ☺️💕💕💕
I just discovered your guide series and I absolutely love it so far. The music is cool, your voice is calm and soothing, you give great advice, it's perfection. My main problem is traffic so I hope you give some advice about that in later videos, but so far, it's awesome, thanks a lot !
This is one of the best "Start up Tutorials" out there right now. Just one detail to consider is putting the industrial/powerplant on the "Right Turn" (or LEFT side if you are British or Japanese) side coming off the freeway to keep the coal trucks from jamming up.
Hey man! I can’t thank you enough for making this series. The way you explain everything is so amazing and helpful. I got so interested that I literally copied your city exactly:)
Since it’s on Game Pass I’ve been trying to get into Cities Skylines. Must have re-installed 3 times with failed cities each time on regular, and no concept of how a city grows in sandbox mode. After following your advice and hearing your clear design rationale, today was the first time I looked at my growing city and smiled :)
Really looking forward to this! I just started playing and while I've watched all of Bluffside, Verde Beach, 5B1C and some builds from Biffa, Egg, et al., this is really going to help. I think my biggest issue is getting too excited when things unlock and not being patient and letting the city grow naturally. The tip about zoned parcels note developing even when there's demand was really helpful! Thanks!
Will do. That's one of the reasons I wanted to outline the series expectations up front. Starterville was only supposed to be a one-off that grew into something else. I figured it is time to make it a real mini-series.
Really looking forward to this series - it's going to be incredibly useful for new players and those struggling to get a solid start. I'm hoping to learn some new things as well! BTW, mentioned you in a tweet this morning re: Industries DLC. :)
I know this is somewhat old now. I have watched this video a few times. I appreciate your commentary, its straight to the point. You're not trying to be funny, you're not obnoxious. you speak with intent and purpose.
I just started playing on console and my goal is to become a good enough city planner where I can make a RUclips channel because watching people build in city skylines have been very therapeutic to me. You are very detailed and creative and I’m learning a lot watching your videos. Thank you!
I really love this. It's almost like a Masterclass City Planning :) Brilliant and I learned so much - as much what to do as what not to :) Thank you so much!
I LOVE this. I've been playing forever but there's still some really simple stuff that trips me up (like that dreaded first interchange!) Question: will you be covering beautification throughout? I think that you find a really good balance between beautifying/personalizing cities effectively without making the process seem to demanding or unapproachable. I'd love to see some tips on that, whether it's sprinkled throughout the series or on its own!
Yes - starting with the next episode and really diving in in episode 3 when Parklife is introduced. I think its something you have to keep up with or you fall behind and never really catch up!
Practice makes professional. I can vividly recall the days when I dreaded highway interchanges. Now I crave the opportunity for the logical creativity.
THANK YOU FOR THIS! I’ve been desperate to get somewhere within Cities on my Series X but quickly fail due to lack of money and power/water. I followed your video whilst starting afresh and now have a thriving city of 6k and over $250k cash! Early days but my itch is being scratched and now I feel more confident. Soooo many good tips in this. Can’t wait to see what the remaining 23 videos will teach me!
Loved this video! I normally play with all the cheats on, so normally my main concern is just planning roads and amenities. I normally just slap everything down and then try to make it work with tons of public transportation...but I still end up with a lot of congestion. I feel like I learned a lot about how to planning and I'm excited to go play and try some of your ideas! Thanks!
Great video! I have spent 100's of hours playing Rollercoaster Tycoon growing up, so I bought this game and all the DLC like 2 years ago and was excited to build something massive, but every time I tried, I would get intimidated after 30 minutes and end up putting the game away for a month or two until wanting to try again...and it became a cycle of putting the game down after 30 minutes over and over, but now I got that spark again!
Funny to see how focused you are on the grid system. I guess it's a cultural difference, i'm european and i try to avoid grid layouts everywhere i can except for in industrial area's 😂 but it does look really nicely organised, i will say. Thanks for the great vid, very helpful
Revisiting this game after a few year break and this tutorial really improved my building approach. Annnnd right as he's saying "we're in a good spot," a massive fire breaks out in that forest area we went out of our way to preserve up by the industrial park.
Thanks a lot, this looks like a great intro. I will use many of your recommendations, except the American square zoning grid, which I find ugly, so I'll try to make it a bit more criss-cross , more angles and maybe a few curves if I feel daring. How do you plan for future wider roads and rondabouts? Do you just demolish some buildings to make it fit, or should you plan ahead and leave space
I like this layout but when the city gets really big, people will start crossing your main street so you'll have to build bridges for them so they don't create traffic.
I had decided I was not going to buy this. Then I thought I'd watch this straight through. I stopped halfway through the video and installed the game. So much better than most beginner's guides. Everything to the point.

🤣🤣🤣 Thank you so much for sharing your work.
you sound like a fun person
happy late 61st birthday!
Same bro, I’ve literally just been watching him and playing with him in the background lmao
I have been playing CS for 2-3 years, but still I like watching these types of videos. And that's what I like about this game because of the diversity of how people start a city and how everyone plays this game, it so different.
Phil is a great teacher and can help make good ones

I play from 2016 but still love to watch those.
are you a global elite yet?
Pro tip if you reach busy town milestone:
If you want more income for your city then consider activating policies that double the amount of sales from commercial zones and double the goods from industrial zones. these 2 policies alone can make you Megabucks. for your city
Note: yes I am a starter player in Cities Skylines
As an architect, I really appreciate the way you layout the grid planning for this city and as well as consideration for the natural landscape of the area.
As a civil engineer I don't appreciate you
Does this grid city is really the better way? I can see a lot of issues with traffic.
@@Willysedom It's a basic layout, not traffic efficient or aesthetic though.
As an aspiring engineer I don’t appreciate you
Great idea for a series 👍
Lmao

this is exactly what controller players need you and city planner making a vanilla type city
Love how you two cheer each other on even though your styles of play are distinctly different
Thank you!!
I've gotten my cues from other content creators early on in the game's life, and I'm trying to really relearn how to play so I can finally make a fully fledged city in this game, instead of struggling unincorporated towns I normally come up with.
this is actually helpful to me.,, I usually start a town, build symmetrically and restart game when income turns red/negative
Man I just started to play this game this week, found this channel and now you're doing a new guide series? This is just perfect.
So you’re telling me that when I start my city, I *shouldn’t* build a $40,000 double-decker roundabout interchange? Your rationality frightens and intrigues me.
Never thought I’d reach a meditative stance watching Cities Skylines videos. Please never stop.

This video, your knowledge, is genuinely invaluable to me :)
Thanks so much for creating this incredible series!!
6:36 "Roads are imperfect. And they don't need to be perfect. It's completely fine. :)"
Getting some real Bob Ross vibes here. Which is great. I like that very much!
But don't forget, when you're talking about traffic, there are no "happy little accidents". ;)
Let's just hope there aren't any 'happy, little accidents' on those roads. :D

Hands down, the most straight forward, easy to follow, and thorough beginners guide I have seen. Fantastic!
This is one of the best beginners guides for any game I have come across, your tone and pacing, the subtle music and depth of information are all perfect
Your voice is so peaceful to listen to explaining this game. I’ve scrubbed through many tutorial and build videos but I’m actually watching every minute of this video. You’re like the Bob Ross of Cities Skylines.
I’ve played cities skylines for a little while now but I’ve never taken the game seriously and now that I am these tips are super useful. Your like the bob Ross of game tutorials you make every little thing that could go wrong into a positive.
Always refreshing to hit the very basics again, nice series :)
I've put many hours into Cities: Skylines and still found this beginner tutorial super helpful. I love the way you present the info, you explain everything well and create a nice relaxing vibe. Looking forward to watching the whole series!
I’ve played cities Skylines for years but like to watch a few videos on it just to maybe learn a few things that maybe I miss. This is a genuinely excellent tutorial series and by far the best one I’ve seen. Very intuitive, relaxing and thoroughly thought out. 10/10 mate!
I’ve played this game for a couple of years now and kept having multiple problems that I didn’t understand how to fix even after several google searches. I’m so glad I found your channel!! Your explanations are so helpful and easy. I feel like I’m playing this game for the first time again with more of an understanding and more excitement than ever!
I agree! Since I am from there it would be totally awesome haha
Super blocks are the future, been from Barcelona too, i love the way the city is built for alternative transport.
You can join the discord to join in the discussion. Its really active and city planner goes through all pings directed at him and answers them. And there are a lot of other real life city planners there
@@alienamzal477 Oh thanks... I will do that!
You can actually see people walking and getting in and out from their cars, if you zoom it.

After only a week after purchase, Cities: Skyline fascinates and frustrates me but you have made the transition from "complete newbie" to "educated newbie" a smooth one. Thank you for your videos!
Personally I think that newbie is only exitable via experience, but yes, education can be applied to newbies
I've learned from you a lot, how to create a city. Your previous " How to star a city..." videos was amazing. Thank you for your work :)
Just got the game and have started playing along with this series, thank you very much for producing this it is help a lot!
Interesting series idea. Looking forward to seeing how things evolve.
I, uh... ended up here early? I think the Tutoria playlist isn't private/unlisted, so I was able to see the video when I just happened to check your channel for a playlist.
For what it's worth: I think this video is going to be incredibly helpful. Wish I'd seen it years ago when I had no idea what I was doing.

24 episodes?! :D wow this is going to be an amazing series!
24 ep 24 likes coincidence 🤔I think so
I'd like to suggest an extra episode explaining road hierarchy (maybe even transit hierarchy).
I'm sure with the Transit DLC, basic mods, and roadway hierarchy, he can manage to keep things in the city flowing quite nicely!

You're actually the reason I started playing this game. I found Bluffside Crossing a few months ago (random suggestion on the algorithm) then started binging your other video's including your first Starterville episodes. Loving it!
Same here!
Thank you!

This is so cozy. The tune. The soothing voice. It's so comfortable to watch 👍
"We created this problem; we can solve it" - Cities: Skylines gameplay loop in a nutshell.
Hey man! I can’t thank you enough for making this series. The way you explain everything is so amazing and helpful. I got so interested that I literally copied your city exactly:)
The game doesn't like Windows 11.
Thanks!
Continue this series please, this is going to help me so much!
I'll look for that! I am always pretty horrible about Twitter - ha!
As a new player in 2023. This tutorial is PERFECT. Excellent explanation and level of detail. Thank you.
I LOVE this. I've been playing forever but there's still some really simple stuff that trips me up (like that dreaded first interchange!)
Question: will you be covering beautification throughout? I think that you find a really good balance between beautifying/personalizing cities effectively without making the process seem to demanding or unapproachable. I'd love to see some tips on that, whether it's sprinkled throughout the series or on its own!
Yes - starting with the next episode and really diving in in episode 3 when Parklife is introduced. I think its something you have to keep up with or you fall behind and never really catch up!
mind if i rate u?
Practice makes professional. I can vividly recall the days when I dreaded highway interchanges. Now I crave the opportunity for the logical creativity.

THANK YOU FOR THIS! I’ve been desperate to get somewhere within Cities on my Series X but quickly fail due to lack of money and power/water. Soooo many good tips in this. Can’t wait to see what the remaining 23 videos will teach me!
2 years later and this guy is just as helpful, has to be the best guide ever. Much appreciated dude
Thanks!
Every time he laughs it fills me with joy.

Annnnd right as he's saying "we're in a good spot," a massive fire breaks out in that forest area we went out of our way to preserve up by the industrial park.
this could easily be marketed as "City Planner plays & ASMR" this was a fantastic video for both tingles, and building a proper city.
Pretty useful considering I was just about to start a city soon
Thanks a lot, this looks like a great intro. I will use many of your recommendations, except the American square zoning grid, which I find ugly, so I'll try to make it a bit more criss-cross , more angles and maybe a few curves if I feel daring.
How do you plan for future wider roads and rondabouts? Do you just demolish some buildings to make it fit, or should you plan ahead and leave space
I like this layout but when the city gets really big, people will start crossing your main street so you'll have to build bridges for them so they don't create traffic.
Thank you for the help, this really allowed me to enjoy the game more now that I know how to make things all work functionally!
I had decided I was not going to buy this. Then I thought I'd watch this straight through. I stopped halfway through the video and installed the game. So much better than most beginner's guides. Everything to the point.
