Not sure if you ever heard of the disaster convention that was Tokyo in Tulsa 2019 but it would be interesting if you covered it! The fire alarm in this video reminded me of it. The attendees had to evacuate during the rave since there was too much smoke and it triggered the fire alarm. It was an absolute mess and everyone called it Hobby Lobby con because the poor vendors had their space in an abandoned hobby lobby. It was bring your own lighting too and absolute chaos. The hotel they usually had was under construction so the convention was split between different buildings. Some were even miles apart! Artists were not benefitting much and some artists even made “I survived Hobby Lobby Con” art! Idk if you do video requests or anything but I would love to see this covered since I don’t think anyone did cover it! Love your content and can’t wait to see more videos! 💖
Ooh, where did you get your carousel horse earrings? They’re super cute!
I would totally buy those brony bucks at face value or higher for a bit of bizarre history.
"I was there Gandalf...3000 years ago..." No joke, we had a Brony version of the Council of Elrond the night of Saturday where a bunch of the agents corralled the heads of Brony "media outlets" (lol) and the agents said "if we don't salvage this con, Hasbro won't greenlight another con for the show staff" so we all went to work to save the future of potential cons. In hindsight, I laugh at the absurdity of Unicon and the fact that the common denominator was My Little Pony but I gotta give props to the people who stepped in and did what they could to help folks out. I know folks rip on Bronies for being weird but there were some good people that weekend just trying their best to help out each other and prevent them from being stranded in Vegas
Oh ya, the con artist con chair was some lady named Sandi who drove around on this scooter and someone stole it from her on Sunday or so the story goes
Oh hello there
yeah that must've been one traumatizing con
Hey, it's the furry guy from youtube
Yo, I didn't know I'd find you here!
Or maybe I did.
never thought I'd see the furry in denial in this place
The reason this con isn't as well known is because they're forgot to have the most important item present, The Ball Pit
But does it time travel?

My dad accidentally ended up in the middle of all this lol. He was a pilot at the time and stumbled into the convention by accident. I was getting really into cosplay so he kept sending me pictures of the cosplayers. It was a lil awkward for 14 yr old me to try to explain to my 60 yr old 'doesn't know how Facebook works' dad what a Brony was. I wasn't in the fandom, it didn't really have a draw for me, but I still remember all those pictures and how hard he was trying to be supportive of my interests. I'll have to see if I have any saved anywhere. There was a really cute one of him with a Rainbow Dash cosplayer that always makes me smile.
Sounds like a great dad

Ohhh man
I'm the girl at the table with Tara Strong at 10:47ish (Though you really only see my hair) That dinner had me feeling so bad for her. She was beaming happy until the food came - When she saw the eggplant in her food she shrieked "Wow that could literally kill me." to the guy who brought it. IIRC they originally brought her a meal with meat in it, she corrected them that she was supposed to receive a vegetarian meal and got brought the eggplant which she was 'deathly' allergic to. For the entire duration of dinner she was just messing around with bread rolls and butter stabbing them and lobbing them at other voice actors who came by the table. She made a butter and bread roll tower that she was hilariously proud of. She was determined to have a good time even though we were all eating and she was hungry. She made us go around the table and introduce ourselves, chatted with us all and really made the most of a good time with us. Like she knew we'd paid money to have dinner at the table with her and she bent over backwards to entertain even though she was miserable. Lovely lady.
The moment I fully realized the chaos was when we went to get... Some sort of bag of con perks, on what I believe was the Saturday... and saw a staff member crying and visibly sweating under the stress. I felt bad for them until the full scope of things became clear later in the weekend after the news of them bailing came. Your video is perfect justice to the chaos of that weekend - I still have my conbooks and PONY BUCKS and some other things from the event only as mementos to how terribly bad it was and how the only real joy was Tara kindly trying to entertain us (And us just ditching the con to go to casinos when things really came tumbling down)
I know of several people who charged back fully the cost of the convention through their banks since I guess in the eyes of the law, it was a huge scam :') Thank you for doing a video on this. It's a weird bump of memory for me and was stressful for everybody at the time but looking back at the chaos is somewhat nostalgic and funny now.
Tara always seemed like an amazingly sweet woman and it broke my heart, seeing how much shit she went through and her talking about how she wouldn't go to first time conventions anymore
Then you saying about she tried to make light of the situation... What a great woman 🥺 I hope to meet her one day
lol i started reading and i didnt realise you were actually her. the con was a disaster but i mean, you met tara strong and you have a fun story to tell people so thats rlly cool and honestly, im kinda jealous lol
Tara is such a sweet lady! I met her at a convention once with my family and since she also voices Raven from Teen Titans (Which my little sister was a big fan of) she did her Raven voice for her. It was so sweet!
that's a really cool story. I'm gonna see tara strong at a local comic con in a few days (september 22nd 23rd 24th) and I'm excited to see her, reading your story with her makes me even more ecited and happy to see her.
I remember when Sandi introduced Unibits, A con only Currency that can't be exchanged back for cash unless you were a vendor
Okay, off topic, but that little crew of 'Equestria News' reporters constantly keeping up the bit are really cute. What a bunch of goofballs, I love it.

Very funny seeing the 3:39 "Sydneigh" half-second blip because it has a similarly wild story surrounding it actually- It wasn't just cancelled, it was cancelled ONE WEEK before its scheduled date, and since so many folks had invested time and money (Nonrefundable plane tickets + artists' prints etc.) in going to this con, a different completely different group of people decided to set up a small-ish tent and put together "SalvageCon", featuring panels + events and even an appearance from Ashleigh Ball (The VA for Rainbow Dash/Applejack), who was originally scheduled to show up at Sydneigh. There are some wild MLP convention stories out there that never left that corner of the internet, even though they definitely should.
PonyConAU was the ones I went too, last one happened during a cyclone on the Gold Coast and they did like a fundraiser to pay off debts after or something, but despite some talk they never really did another one again.
I think the last major Brony Convention left was Alicon in Adelaide which had to cancel due to COVID, no idea if they're going to come back or not.
Unlikely, Alicon purely existted as a vanity project for the organiser and they kinda lost it when the only option was a virtual con. Which considering how much of a clusterfuck the two cons that did happen were, nothing of value has been lost
Dear God please let someone tell the story of Sydneigh
I am so devasted by the fact i can't read this in your voice at ultra-sonic speeds while speaking without any sort of complications at long sybalistic words

If I entered a convention and they said "Give us all of your money and we'll give you our fake currency to use for purchases in our dealer room." I'd simply leave.
As someone who lived in an apartment that was going out of business, I can say with full confidence that usually when a company is going out of business they will do shady things to get any extra money. Usually doubling the costs of things, making up fake bills for things that are usually free, or straight up stealing money hoping that you won't notice. My advice would be to do your research on the venue before attending a convention.

I work at a Las Vegas history museum. When guests ask me what my favorite weird Vegas fact is, I tell them about this.
I was there. I was the medic on staff with the security team hired from Colorado (The Lunar Guard). It was the WORST and everyone got scammed. Our rooms weren't covered, I ended up buying doughnuts for all the VAs because their "comped" food never showed up. I have so many stories about that shit.
That was nice of you to compensate the VAs.
Do you have any stories you'd like to share? I'm curious and sure everyone would love to hear!
You should of been there for the planning, hearing Sandi introduce Uni Bits and telling las vegas bronies to do street team work for free
Oh my God I see me. I was the short one with the short blonde hair off to the side of the stage of the auction on the last day. I forgot I wore that bright ass orange shirt that day and that my keys were being stolen out of the security office while I was there.
Hi I'm pnut. I was a member of the security force brought in from Colorado. There were about 15 of us or so in total. This was our first major gig so our compensation was meals and rooms. They did not provide meals for us and we were kicked out of our rooms Sunday with everyone else. My friend fidelis was guarding the VIP room and was the only one of us to get a chair. We were being run 15 hours a day on our feet and our captain didn't get any sleep Friday night. We had to lock him in his room Saturday to make him rest. I could be found at the bits table watching the main hall and selling bits. Ashleigh Ball was in tears on Sunday when I was at the main counter in the convention entrance. We were spread thin doing our best for the VIPs watching the hallway, doors, etc for the entire floor. No one got any decent breaks. At one point one of the music bronies called the tallest and kindest member of our team a fucking retard. I haven't seen his name anywhere since so at least he faded away. I got a shirt out of it though which was nice. At the end of the day we did everything we could and a new friendship is witchcraft aired that night. At the motel 6 we stayed at Sunday night before driving back to Utah that tall friend somehow procured a massive box of fun dip, we had a few of those each in our room, and the next morning the four of us that shared one room chanted at a gas station in George Utah "I will destroy you and steal your fiance booty booty booty booty rocking everywhere".
As for the fire alarm we were told it was someone in the casino area who set it off by leaning on a door, not a con attendee. The tiny security team was responsible for the evac. See since we were from Colorado we did not know standard procedure for Vegas hotels was to stay put. We did a full evac in just over a minute, one of the VIPs was going to the bathroom and while doing a bathroom check he told our guy that he was "putting out the fire" and right after he said that the alarm stopped blaring. Golden moment for us. As far as what we were tasked to do, we were drained. We weren't paid we were supposed to be given rooms and food.
If any of you got bits, went to donate, bought a shirt, or donated by card at that auction, you talked to me. I was taking cards for the auction and I sadly had no trust issues at 20 years of age and said "yeah I'm sure the dealers taking bits will be paid back!" Hell I saw that agent take money from the cash box with my own eyes saying it was to pay for the VIPs. The reason for the bits and why people bought them was to avoid the outrageous atm costs.
Fucking Sandi stole my keys and I'm still salty that she made me pay for a damn locksmith back in Colorado to get my spare out of my car so I could go home. Never had a key fob for that car again.
It's a nightmare of a weekend I'll never forget.
Why do I have a feeling that the music brony you mentioned was MandoPony?
SHE STOLE YOUR KEYS???
Wait so. Not only did you get your asses handed to you, just for trying to do what you were hired for, you 1: didnt get the food promised, 2: got kicked out of the rooms you were promised, 3: got crapped on by other people working at/with the con (not to mention the ammount of con goers who were possably taking their fustration out on you as well) 4: you werent set up for success (should have been breifed of protocalls for any event at the venue) and 5: she stole your freaking keys?!? Who the hell does that??? Im so sorry you had to deal with that, im glad yall made the best of it
I saw Saberspark mention someone named Sandi, was she one of the event organizers? And why did she steal your keys?
wow that sounds like a terrible weekend
I was there. I was meeting my then-boyfriend there, and luckily he booked the room outside the convention rates to get one of the nicer rooms in the place on the top floor. Thus after the con imploded, our room was used as a kind of impromptu meeting room for some of the fandom big names (I was a volunteer for Equestria Daily at the time). Meanwhile, my then-bf and I mostly sat back and enjoyed the little bit of time we got together, because hey, if the con exploded, we could just go on dates and enjoy Vegas.
Honestly I love that. Letting people hang in your room and going on dates is such a vibe

Ah yes. The memories. I was an Artist Alley vendor (or should I say "vender" as the badges were misspelled) at Unicon. You used 2 quotes from my post about it at 8:44 and 13:54. Another tidbit people might find interesting: At the end of the con, I was notified that I would be required to pay the state of Nevada sales tax. They failed to produce for me the needed form. I then was told to hand over the amount owed as cash in an envelope and they would "pay it for me." Yeeah. No. I didn't go for that.

can't believe they did a fundraiser for the celebrities but not the artists. these celebs can afford to take a loss and buy a plane ticket. the artists can't.
Harsh as it is to say, and I'm speaking here as a content creator in the MLP fandom myself, there's logic there. If an artist gets shafted by a con, they'll probably just boycott that con. But if the rescue mission for the show staff hadn't taken place, there was a very real prospect of Hasbro banning them from going to *any* con, regardless of who ran it.
I have to agree with Logan. Hasbro literally almost involved with this. If they completely banned MLP staff and cast from brony convention, they will lose money not only conventions but artist and it could faded out early.

I actually ended up skipping Sunday because I basically spent the entire convention sitting in the hallway. Now I’m super glad I did. I just remember it being boring but not all of this. 😱
Unicon was a huge joke in the fandom after it happened. I went to a local brony con in dallas in 2013 and a vendor was selling some unicon bits they kept from the con in the auction.

Imagine you’re a 6th grade girl, already feeling embarrassed about being “too old” to like a kid’s show. When you learn about the online MLP fandom, you’re excited, there’s other people your age enjoying this show too! You can talk about it together! Now, imagine learning about the grown men who are into MLP. Bronies.
I was that 6th grade girl. A special fear was unlocked that day. The word still sends shivers down my spine.
Reminds me of the Bob's Burgers episode parodying Bronies!
Oops, I liked a show.
I got into the MLP fanbase when I was in elementary school. (And yes I did still feel like I was too old to enjoy MLP). But when I heard about Bronies, I wasn't creeped out by them I actually thought it was amazing and breaking gender stereotypes. It seems like a lot of kids we're left traumatised by the MLP fanbase, and then there was me who is very nostalgic for it. Just not the p3doph1l3s.
Then there's some deep-rooted, irrational trauma you need to sort out, Amelia. Jesus Christ.
@@latheredtrillionaire5701 Haha, I love this reply. There is indeed some mental stuff I need to sort out but it’s not related to MLP, I assure you! When I said I learned about bronies in my original comment, I mean I learned about the pedo and neckbeard part of the community. Because that was my first exposure to the word, I’ll always kind of associate it with those types of people in the back of my head. Rationally though, I know that plenty of regular guys call themselves bronies too! No worries, man.
those guys on the brony news network seemed genuinely sweet and i’m glad that all the cool members of the fandom had a community even if some people think it’s “cringe” and they had their shitty moments
For anyone not from or over familiar with Las Vegas, claiming the convention would be held at the “high end resort” of the Riviera is like saying they would be holding a banquet at the Michelin Star restaurant, Sizzler.
I’ve been in the Riviera plenty and when I heard “high end” and “Riviera” in the same sentence I did a double-take. Plenty of fond memories but bro it’s no Aria for sure

I have been involved in running my local sf con for over 20 years. One of the horror stories from a few years before I became involved was RoseCon, which similarly overpromised and undersold in is first year as a result of inexperienced organizers. In general, if you are trying to start a fan-rin con, don't try to shoot the moon the first year.

Oh god, Unicon, this was literally my first convention ever at 15. Words can't describe how excited I was to experience the community but never knew how bad it really was after the fact. Fortunately I documented the whole thing! I had gone partially as a regular attendee with PRESS passes accompanying Joseph Frye filming his Unicon recap.
We had no clue this was happening as we went around filming and interviewing the cosplayers, voice actors, and those horse-famous in the community. I even remember talking to Sandi (the con organizer) on her scooter at one point outside the green room for the musicians when going to interview the VAs; she wasn't great.
The celebrity dinner was an absolute nightmare by the way. I had paid $200 to have dinner with Cathy Weseluck, however, they screwed up so badly that her table was full. Luckily MicTheMicrophone got me a table with Lee Tockar which was great, and both Peter New & Andrew Francis left their tables to join as well for a moment which leads to some goofs in my vlog, very memorable.
It's all in my recap vlog if anyone is interested in seeing what the dinner was kinda like. Genuinely a crazy first con experience, though honestly one of the best nights of my life getting to eat with the musicians after the concert had ended when I was both tired and miserably sick catching a bad cough there, and it absolutely made my night.
For as amateur as the convention was and all of it's problems, I still had a ton of fun even though I recall being terribly sick by the end of it. The Riviera was far from a nice space but I honestly couldn't imagine any other casino/hotel agreeing to such an event. Even as a kid who's parents never let him travel I was excited that there was finally a local convention I could attend and honestly that was all that really mattered to me so looking back it's crazy to think that it was one of the most notoriously terrible flops of a con ever. Met a ton of amazing people there, so definitely thankful to have come out of it with those memories despite everything.
It goes to show Bronies are some of the best people out there in communities.
Lee Tockar is great. I was at a smallish convention a couple of years ago where he was the star guest. Despite some pretty serious jetlag, he came to the pre-meet party in a local pub and really threw himself into the event. Obviously I don't know what he's like behind the scenes, but I have nothing but praise for everything I saw of him that weekend.

Either bronies don’t like furries or the other way around because if not they’d crossover and hang out more I think, we’d definitely see joint conventions which would be a riot I bet
@@elliejelly8815 Bronies didn't really like furries all that much. There was a variety of reasons, but bronies used to get *very* mad if you compared them to a furry (if they already weren't one). Then when the brony fandom got to the point of being super creepy/toxic, the furries didn't really want to interact with them due to bad experiences/horror stories.
I'd say by the end of it, the animosity was pretty mutual.
The event was pretty wild. I was there promoting another event, and thankfully I dodged the hotel room billing issues. I had a discounted room through the event, but the people working the hotel desk talked me into upgrading my room to a rennovated room for like $20 more per night, and it was not part of the convention special rate. I am so glad I did that and avoided that mess. It was really odd though. Before the news broke, one of the VAs pulled me to the side Saturday afternoon and said I was the only person being told this, and he went on to tell me everything that was going on with the finances. Asked for my help on how to get things together but not tell anyone yet, so I already was beginning plans for wtf to do. That night at a private party we went to, he held a meeting with all media heads. While the volunteers that were running the event were still there on Sunday, most of them were pretty much told to take a break. Other convention heads got all of their staff that were at the event together and assigned us to take over areas. I ended up coordinating with convention security and running autographs. Was wild. Also because I pretty much turned into convention security there, I can confirm that the heads were hiding in a side office behind their registration desk the entire time with the cash box. There was definitely money in it. They definitely seemed to be taking accounts of the money. I don't know where these rumors of agents taking all the cash and leaving it empty the previous days came from. I'd call that a bold faced lie. It got really awkward, too. When the head found out what we were doing, she for a moment must have thought we were going to get money being raised through on site aucitons and #LasPegAssist for her cause she just looked up and was like "Thank you," to me, and I don't remember what I said, but I know it probably wasn't nice.
Oh yeah, definitely don't want to forget these details. It wasn't just the actors and show staff that got hosed. The convention was paying transportation and room for a lot of brony musicians and other community guests. These people got locked out of their rooms, in some cases with thousands of dollars of DJ and band gear that the hotel was holding hostage against them. Because their travel was being covered by the event, they were stranded in Vegas without a hotel room or a way to get back home. The urgency to get money was to get people who were stuck out of there. It's all hazy in my memory as everything happened in the flash of an eye, but I think there were bronies who were still stranded in Vegas as many as two days after they were supposed to originally be back home because of this.
Wow this is all so interesting!! Thank u for your story, it’s insane how shady the hotel were especially holding expensive equipment hostage as leverage!! Literally crazy, hope you made it out fairly unscathed!
Fairly unscathed! Mostly just crazy memories. It's a weird experience because I met and made some of my long lasting friends there. And I feel like the shared trauma probably strengthened some of my existing friendships. Feel free to ask any questions!
The agent thing might also have gotten exaggerated over time. There’s a comment above from someone who says he was one of the few security guys in the video and he claims he actually saw the agent take money once. That said, he doesn’t say how much. He could have just grabbed a little bit in hopes he’d get away with it. Could even have been someone told by staff to get money to buy a guest a coffee or something for all we know. But combined with organizer claims of the agents taking money and it probably has been blown way out of proportion through rumor and excuses. Could easily be true that one took something (legitimately or not) and there still be money left over.
idk why but seeing two dudes in suits doing news reports _specifically_ in the mlp fandom is honestly the cutest thing ever??? 😭
I was one of those volunteers that ran around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to help people get paid. :) The con staff asked me and some friends (as we were known in the fandom for art, music, etc. between the lot of us) to pull some favors and find some people in the artist alley that'd be open to donating art to have signed and auctioned off in order to raise funds to pay the VAs.
The VAs were super grateful and extra sweet, the con staff basically stood back and let us handle the situation which was not a good look. There was someone that like, actually ran away that day iirc? No one could find her and I guess it was important that she was around. Maybe it was the organizer? I can't be certain anymore.
As a Las Vegas native, I can confirm that the Riviera was a shit hotel and has been since demolished and built over lol.
Edit: After reading Saber's comment, it was Sandy that went missing.
I remembered that she was scooting around in her little scooter, sweating up a storm and freaking tf out because everyone was asking her how to proceed (she was the organizer, of course they would) and she just.... scooted off....
SHE JUST SCOOTED AWAY 😭

Also like how you stay impartial throughout unless evidence warrants you not to. Very cool!
Con disasters always blow my mind! The best way to handle 1st-time cons is something like a mini-convention. I attended a "mini-con" one weekend back in 2015 that was a first time anime convention run locally. It was a group of teens and young adults who had the help of their parents, and the location was just a small local public gymnasium! Though it was tiny, it was very well run and extremely endearing. It helped the team running the mini-con grow in confidence and monetary capability that they were able to do it again the next year at a larger location, and for two days instead of one afternoon! I've since moved states, so I'm not sure if it's still happening, but it did go on for at least a few years after. It really pays off to be patient and start small, but dream big, and take it one step at a time!
It's bizarre being a former fan of mlp but knowing nothing about the actual brony fandom
