    Realism is really difficult. Even if you trace it, it’s still extremely hard to get in all the right values and shades and colors etc. To anyone who says it’s easy, I’d give you a traced sketch and tell you to make it look like the picture. Let’s see how well they do

    • @noonie_
      @noonie_ 3 года назад +27

      this is so true! this also brings up another highly talked about topic, tracing. tracing does skip the sketching part but that doesn’t mean coloring it is any easier, bringing up the shadows and highlights, not as easy as people think.

      @kittycorn9058 3 года назад +10

      Exactly. Especially because most of the time you’ve got a photo reference and in a way, youre competing against it where the photo will always win. I tried realism and failed miserably so I think people who can do it are extremely talented.

      Tbh copying all art from a picture is difficult.😭 Realism is a struggle for a lot of people. It requires a lot of seeing and processing. How come realism requires me to train my eyes like that? It’s difficult!

    I personally feel like people shame artists for using tools to do art better, for example, rulers, or some people use projectors, etc. a lot of artists could progress quicker if they didn’t feel bad about using art tools to do art better. I feel like this should not be something to avoid, if it helps you then that’s great and even if someone is to completely trace a persons photo, the ability to actually make that look real or shade it properly is REALLY HARD. Even with tools to help you, if you can’t draw you won’t be able to make it look good. I’m a tattoo artist so making stencils has actually helped me paint better, draw better, etc and you’d NEVER want your artist to not use a stencil prior to tattooing you unless they’ve freehanded tattoo stencils for a dozen years.

    • @nilawarriorprincess
      @nilawarriorprincess 3 года назад +11

      Yeah, my brother made me feel like using a ruler to get down proportions was wrong. I tried doing it his way, but all artists measure to get proportions down properly. They may use different tools but the goal is the same. I have no problem carrying rulers with me at all times. Do what works best for you.

    • @taciasoares2022
      @taciasoares2022 3 года назад +9

      I totally agree! If you always practice the WRONG way to do things... like the wrong proportions for example, then its going to take you exponentially longer to learn how to do them correctly. I had this epiphany about a year ago. It doesn’t make sense to practice over and over and over the wrong way to do something. All that does is create bad habits that you then have to unlearn after years when you one day finally realize how to do them correctly. Why wait? I personally make it practice to trace anything I want to draw FIRST so that I can get all my preconceived notions about proportions put to rest. Then I use that tracing as a tool to draw freehand. I saw DRASTIC improvements in my work immediately. There shouldn’t be shame in learning skills to be an artist. Being an artist isn’t based on talent, that’s just a starting point. So many beginner artists see all these professional artists and think they are all prodigies, but the reality is... they are extremely skilled. They have been working at their craft day in and day out for how many years now? Five? Ten? Twenty? You cannot compare yourself to an artist with that experience if you are just starting out. Would you expect a doctor with one year experience to have the same level experience as a doctor with twenty years? No way. There is no reason why artists should be expected to be born creating master pieces. Trace to learn. You will be grateful for doing it.

      Your art looking "better" is where you now are saying only realism is art which is what I see youtubers fall prey to. No, art doesn't have to be realistic to be art. Neither is realism not art. It is what you say with your tools that matters and how your style and approach contribute or take away from it.

    • @MadLover4690
      @MadLover4690 3 года назад +1

      @@taciasoares2022 I disagree with the tracing thing, but I suppose that's just my experience. Drawing from reference will definitely help you improve your work, but following big lines in a work or photograph that you see will not help you on a technical level. When I traced things as a child my work did not improve in any way. It wasn't until I was told to look at the photo and attempt to recreate it that I improved greatly in my work. I paid more attention to the shapes that made up the work and how light interacted with the objects and people. (Also tracing just leaves a bad taste in my mouth unless I'm tracing my own artwork to transfer it onto something else. Otherwise, you're not using a reference picture for reference but copying it once you directly trace it).

    • @taciasoares2022
      @taciasoares2022 3 года назад +5

      @@MadLover4690 no, this is not how I trace. I don’t trace contour lines. You would have to see to understand. I draw shapes on my reference that i then use to make a new reference. Then I draw from my references for the structure. Then I draw from the original. I draw the shapes to see the correct proportions and perspective. Like, I draw the Loomis method and rhythm lines idk how to explain

      😲 That is crazy! “Your work would be more appealing if it was less realistic”??? Sounds to me like that someone is jealous more than anything! I obviously don’t know you, but realistic is what I am ultimately striving for. I am just now just barely starting to do my own “art” to color and it is pretty obvious at this point, but after coloring for almost 5 years, to get to the next “level” it’s what I need to do….but my ultimate goal whether it is my own image or another artists image that I color, I want it to look as close to the real thing as it is humanely possible….you just keep going girl and don’t let anyone else discourage you.

      I also felt dismissed when I got the comment, "a photocopier can do the same thing in 30 seconds." What value was there in putting hours of effort into it then, unless I made it different? What I didn't realize it's that art is first and foremost for the artist: to give peace, joy, release of emotions. Whatever pleases the artist is the way it should be done. It is for the viewer only second. Besides, I imagine it took many hours to invent and build the photocopier too.

  • @bnalogunbibs

    Photorealism is a genre of art that encompasses painting, drawing and other graphic media, in which an artist studies a photograph and then attempts to reproduce the image as realistically as possible in another medium. Although the term can be used broadly to describe artworks in many different media, it is also used to refer specifically to a group of paintings and painters of the American art movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

    the gag is theres actually no such thing as drawing from imagination every animator/comic artist will tell you this everyone uses a reference. what can happen over time is that an artist can develop a visual library, no longer needing to always reference an image because after drawing said object/person/pose etc multiple times they just remember how to draw it eventually. look up kim jung ji he explains this very well he has an amazing visual library he can draw almost anything but as a beginner artist he used references

    Hi Temi, I just found you last week and this is only my second video I have seen so far. You are so spot on. I am not an artist by any means YET…at least in the sense that I draw…just starting after almost 5 years of adult coloring…but as I mentioned to one of your other viewers/ subscribers, my absolute ultimate goal is to take an image (be that one that another artist drew or my own eventually) and make it as realistic as it is humanly possible. I have come a long way in that regard, but still have a long way to go. Some people just will never understand those of us that strive for that level, especially in the”coloring world” and that is okay. Each of us needs to do what makes us happy in this area. It’s kind of like the person that told me a few back, “I can get as much depth with 4/5 layers as you can with those 10-20 layers you speak of!” Then proceeded to post an example, which of course made me just walk away from the discussion, shaking my head. I knew I would just be “beating my head against a brick wall” if I had tried to continue the conversation. By the way, when I closed my eyes, I did see a 🟥. I can’t imagine what it must be like to not be able to visualize. I do have a friend that can’t do it either. It must be hard, but that is coming from my perspective. If you’ve never been able to do so, I suppose you don’t know what you are missing, right? Glad I found you!

    I’m so happy I found your channel. I actually stopped doing art for about 12 years because I felt like an imposter since I could never visualize original concepts for my art. My last high school teacher made me feel awful about it too and made me feel like I must not be an artist. Thus, I lost the joy of making any art for over a decade. I am pretty good at copying references realistically (and thus have also always loved doing portraits, especially, since then you can’t say I’m just copying someone else’s work/photos) but I could never make art from my imagination. This has been so eye opening to me. While I don’t see just complete black when visualizing, I only see extremely, extremely vague blurry colorless blobs that are pretty useless when trying to create something brand new. Thank you for making this video. You have given me back inspiration to start making art again.

Of course it's art. It difficult to do. Your work is amazing. I just recently found you and I'm sure I'll be binging your library.

    Adding this comment here too because it fits here as well :) I've never understood the comments about reference photos and why it's 'cheating'. All the old masters, like Rembrandt, van Gogh, Picasso, Monet all used references whether models or gardens and nature to capture their likewise. That's now we mainly make art. Especially people portraits are very difficult to do well because we easily see changes or differences in people's faces in comparison to a bouquet of flowers for example. Loving your videos Temi!! Keep making and teaching us beautiful art!

    Oh My Gosh! I just ran across your channel and I love you. Not to mention there were SOO many mic drops in this video! Luckily, I’ve been surrounded by people that enjoy art and think that art is impressive especially realistic looking art, which is what I’m working to do. This was actually the first time I heard anyone say realistic art wasn’t “real” art. I mean seriously...? Are they even hearing themselves when they say things like that? Everyone can play three notes on the piano. Can EVERYONE be closely compared to Mozart or Beethoven? The answer is NO! Everyone can draw a stick figure or a tree. EVERYONE can’t draw with their own hands realistic, photorealistic, hyporealistic, any relm of realism art!! Great video! 100% agree. I can’t wait to watch more!

  • @NyxSnowstorm

    I really love the art Temi creates and it feels mesmerizing to watch a piece come together. But where I live realism is like the only sort of art worthy of being produced and as a young artist who likes to draw anime and random stuff from my imaginations I really felt like my passion didn't matter cause it wasn't realistic enough, but admired realism. So thats the thing people should stop judging when they straight up know nothing about art. Art is about the peace of mind, its about the beauty of any little creation and the emotions within that piece.
    Who so evers reading stay safe ❤❤❤

    I have had like a form of imposter syndrome surrounding my art for this exact reason. Thank you so much. I haven’t really drawn too much since I graduated high school and some of it has surrounded me feeling like I’m not a real artist because I might use a grid to help with my proportions in my art or I need a reference to help actually get my ideas on paper. I’ve finally been getting back into a creative mood again and actually putting a pencil on paper or some paint on a denim jacket. I’m an aspiring makeup artist and I’ve kinda convinced myself for so long that makeup is my art but somehow unless I’m doing abstract art on my face creative makeup isn’t an art form. This is just a very jumbled way of me saying thank you for reopening my eyes and showing me that I am still an artist and I always will be no matter what tools I use in my realistic art or the medium I choose wether it be colored pencil or eyeshadow.

    Woah I felt this so hard. I do charcoal/graphite portraits (like the one in my icon) A lot of the times I feel like I'm not a "real" artist because I'm not as creative, don't have my own style and can't really draw from my imagination well. It's nice to know it's not just me.

      samee. I'm so frustrated with people who think a distinctive style is necessary for art to be art. and guess what, realism is a style!!! it doesn't matter if every other realism artist makes similar art to you, that's the point! it's supposed to look real! just because it's not entirely distinctive doesn't mean it isn't art. if someone is creating something they consider art, it is art. people who gatekeep art or invalidate any type of art are absolute snobs, and I'm so upset that I ever let it get to my head. it still gets to my head sometimes, but anyways sorry for the rant i guess, i hope you continue drawing, it looks amazing from your profile picture!

    I completely agree! I feel like photographers get this a lot too. There’s a lot of work that goes into capturing photos and setting up photoshoots.
    I think there will always be people who will say “that’s not art” because our art style isn’t what they expected but that’s the beautiful thing about art! It’s completely subjective and can be interpreted in so many different ways

    What I really appreciate about realism is that the artist is attempting to capture and re-create something that they find beautiful. It's finding aesthetic that already exists in reality, something that's fundamentally strange and ethereal, and loving it for what it is. It's expressing your feelings of admiration and appreciation physically, through hard work and skill-building. It is wholesomely art.

    As someone who can but doesn't regularly do realism, Realism IS definitely art and it's not necessarily hard (for me) but it's time consuming and requires a lot of technical skill and it's not what I enjoy doing. I damn well can appreciate realism artists cause they do such gorgeous works that are beautiful to see.
    Since it takes technical skill and can objectively be appreciated for beauty or for invoking feelings, yes = art

  • @tsubakitarra37
    @tsubakitarra37 3 года назад

    First of all, I really really REALLY like your content. I can relate to you sooo easily. I'm also self learner when it comes to art and I absolutely love realism. I think that lot of people actually don't understand how hard and time consuming it is. We can see on youtube thousands of videos of someon painting but I feel like lot of people can be deluded (usually even unconsciously) by them to think that it is easy and doesn't take that much of the time because 90% of those videos are speeded.
    Also what I don´t understend is why some people are so strict about what is and what is not art, like who gave them the right to tell others "this is and this is not art". Just because you went to art school and you do art your way doesn't mean that you must be also so close minded and hateful towards others. I also love drawing with colored pencils and I won't let nobody to tell me "you are worthless
    because you use pencils". I think that it doesn't matter what tools you use but how skillful you are. You can have the most expensive and unique tools but when your drawing skills are crappy, your art will be crappy (I saw some really good art created in Microsoft Paint). But that is also OK because this is how we learn and improve. For me personally I really enjoy the process itself but when I'm done, I feel kinda sad and just empty when I look at the finished product so I just start drawing something else.
    And the ting with red square, I can see red square when my eyes are closed (I can visualize things like that my whole life. I guess it's in genes and how your brain is build and how it works idk.)

    I can get all the fancy "High Tech" gears and gadgets.
    But my inner thought said " Don't worry about creating

    I love hyperrealism, it's a real skill to render an exact photo-esque drawing/painting. Years ago I bought a book called. . . Exactitude: Hyperrealist Art Today, it's amazing. I can visualize things but need a reference to draw from. Two comments I can't stand are; "That's interesting." that basically says they don't like something and "I could do that.", LoL. Hi Temi, I have literally just found you & must say I really enjoyed your video & must say that I am blown away by your art skills (darn I wish my art was just half as good as you... I draw but nothing special. Photo realistic art IS art, it is pushing the boundaries of an artists and for many who appreciate art, we find it captivating. Please do not listen to those who criticise your art. I agree by your observations on the different forms of art & just as you have impressionist,, pop art etc, photo realistic art is another category, simple as that & just as one may find some people who will dislike other forms of art, some will not favour photo realism, that's their personal choice, though to attack an artist's work because of their own dislike for something is certainly not the done thing, it's arrogant for them to do so. As for the condition that you have where you struggle to visualise shapes etc, no doubt you may already have tried this but perhaps try starting off with a straight line, then try changing the colour of the line. Once you are used to that, add another line to it, then, in time another and another, next thing you know, you have a square, then you could try changing the colour of it... You could then try working on a cube. Once again, I'm so glad that I found your chennel Temi.
