Maybe it also depends on what you're used to. I've seen some artists make realistic portraits with this crayola set without using other blending materials. I also personally like using crayola more than faber castel. They blend better. The key is to apply colors really, really lightly. I haven't used Prismacolor but they obviously better quality.

Wow, what a great comparison. The prismas are so much warmer, so much more alive. I used the Crayolas in a colouring book, and although the subject was Caucasian, I ended up using the very darkest shades for shadows. So yes, I can see the need for darker shades. I even wished there were darker shades for my picture, and resorted to a Prismacolor sepia pencil. ( I love that pencil. I go through ridiculous numbers of it.) All in all, they were a good, not great, addition to my "box of many brands", and they are definitely colours that I will use in my wildlife art, so a worthwhile purchase. And even with such limited palettes, you've done a wonderful job on this portrait. (Edited for spelling error)

I just pushed myself through a drawing with mid-range (I'd say student-grade) colored pencils and I was not feeling it with the number of layers I could get... and your results with these children's art supplies are so beautiful, even if they were giving you so much trouble.

No surprise here. I’m an avid Prismacolor user but at my begging I did my hyperrealism art with Crayola for the longest of time and the payoff was so good. Crayola is good for beginners but Prisma is top tier.

You really should do another colors of the world video with the regular set of crayola colors. You would definitely make a masterpiece and I’m sure it would be a lot of fun for you!

I like each side in their own right. The texture from the Crayola set had a touch of reality while the other set had the perfection of airbrushing or animation. Either way, you are great!!!

One thing I do for my colored pencil drawings is buy one of the bigger sets from Crayola, and then I buy a white prismacolor colored pencil since you can buy them separately in places such as Michael's. It works very well and it cost less for more colors, and simpler blending than the Crayola's on their own.

Hi! Hope you see this!!!Just finished watching your Crayola Colors of the World video and when you said you were also gonna do something with the colored pencils version, I had to look it up and here it is!!! Thanks for both videos! Learned a lot! Now if you please, could you be so kind as to tell me, which colors should I buy to fully complete the Prismacolor Portrait Set and make it more whole? No need for the specific color names, but maybe like how many reds or shades of greens, purples etc, you think would be the best for the perfect portrait set.
I'm about to buy the set, but I would love to order whatever extra colors are necessary.
Please, let me know, if you are so kind. 🥰
Im gonna wait in the hopes you do read this, to then go ahead and buy what you recommend!
    🥰🥰🥰
