    I feel like you dove right into "hardmode" by doing a realistic portrait with red, yellow, blue, and white! It's amazing what you were able to achieve when you needed to mix those colors on your own. I wonder how much easier it would have been if you did have a burnt umber and/or black to be able to adjust your color tones without needing to work at keeping the hues consistent. You did a great job, it's a beautiful picture of you and you made a beautiful painting out of it!

    When mixing blue and red paints to get purple it will always comes out darker then you want (or muddy like you said), all you need to do is add a little bit of white to get the purple to look good

    I respect you so much for not trying to explain your emotions about receiving the black creator award. I think people are often pushed to explain their feelings before they’ve gotten the chance to process them themselves, so it was amazing to hear you say that you were upset but you weren’t going to expand on why because you hadnt had enough time to fully process it yourself

    Solution for the mineral spirits smell: using linseed oil instead.
    Basically, there are two different things you can add to oil paints to make them more liquid, mineral spirits and oil medium. Mineral spirits work by breaking down the oil in the paint with alcohol. Its really good for cleaning paint from your brush or if you want the oils to dry really quickly, but the fumes are intense and it can start dissolving and lifting layers of paint already on your canvas if there's too much in one spot. Oil medium is more of the oil that is used in the paint itself to hold the pigments together until they dry, linseed oil is the most common type. Oil medium can take thick oil paints from a little bit more liquid to a thin glaze to tint an area. Adding more oil will increase the length of time it takes for everything to dry though.
    mineral spirits isn't actually what you wanted to use to thin out the paint. Rather to thin out oil paint and make it more liquid you want to use an oil medium, like linseed oil, with your oil paints. Mineral spirits are called paint thinners, but they thin out the paint by breaking down the oil - which is exactly what you want when cleaning your brush, but not so much when painting. Plus linseed oil doesn't have the same fumes problem spirits do. You still should work in a room with air flow, but you're not gonna get dizzy just leaning over your palette for too long.

Then I found your channel and watching you compare, do tests, challenge yourself, explaining what your trying to do. It really helped me learn, I take notes in my head and besides it’s way more interesting than some tutorial. Anyways I just wanted to say thank you and that I love your art ❤️

    Weirdly if you look on the website it says there are only *supposed* to be 5 water soluble Lyra crayons. They cheaped out. Perhaps they cheaped out on the Burnt Umber too. In case you ever need oil paint thinner again, just go to the hardware store and get thinner there for cheaper!

  • @laowaistudieschina7470
    @laowaistudieschina7470 2 года назад +15

    Wonderful oil colors! The only one I'd add is raw umber. It may be just me but I find a cool brown easier to warm up with red or yellow than to cool a warm brown, especially with ultramarine. Also, Gamsol is a lot cheaper than most brands. You do need to ventilate your area well, though.
    I think your underpainting color was well chosen. In the video it looks like a good midtone compared to your hand. Letting the underpainting show through a bit is one of the strengths of doing an underpainting.

  • @michelle48

    When I paint, my under painting tends to be in crazy colors. So like if I were painting a face I'd use reds, yellows, and blues to form the face and provide an undertone that will help the skin tones have depth. Maybe trying it that way will help your issue with the underpainting you did here as well as your urge for more color when working with a limited pallet.
