  • Nearly 2000 British troops are taking part in a war games exercise in Estonia, with armoured vehicles, tanks, ship, helicopters and aircraft.
Exercise Hedgehog is taking place just a short distance from the Russian border, designed to help Estonia prepare its defences against its neighbour.
    Rosie Laydon reports.

I always had spare socks close to my body to dry them out even if they did not feel wet yet and kept changing them with the ones i was wearing. Simply to keep the moisture down in otherwise steaming boots while moving through the forest all day.

Maybe everything happening in the east of Europe will finally make the government see the need for a somewhat larger force. I mean we’ve sent 3 out of only 40 odd surface to surface missile launchers to be used by Ukraine, and really I don’t think we can afford to send more than that and I hope we don’t since it’d be a problem otherwise.
if it were me (and I’m by no means a financial expert or military soldier at all, tho I do wish I could at some point) I’d want the British army to be at around 120,000 active personal strong with at least 75-80,000 reservists ideally. aside from that, the number of tanks is kinda small, last I checked it was around 200 odd and declining to be around 142 challenger “3” tanks.
tbh the government needs to see that it can’t keep having its military capabilities decline, the less soldiers and vehicles we have, the less we’ll be willing to allocate to any war effort not on British soil.

30 tanks are a considerable slice of the dwindling British capability. If we do not start planning for a new MBT manufacturing facility soon. The days of the indigenous tank are over. The shame of the British Army driving around in German designed and built tanks, will have our fore fathers turning in their graves. Not quite as bad if we buy American but it's still a national disgrace.
We could do much worse than starting from the existing Challenger concept. Perhaps designed around a fully integrated engine and gearbox power pack, that can be changed in 30 mins under field conditions. Giving a power output permitting several more tons to be added to the basic Dorchester hull when deployed or needed. With F35 type helmets and HUDs for the 3/4 crew. Permitting full 360' coverage with hatches closed.
Rather than the days of the MBT being over, I would argue that with the new battled awareness IT available today. Combined with ever improving active protection systems. The Tank has finally come of age as a fully aware and totally integrated linchpin of armed conflict.
Manned or unmanned turret, autoloader or not, 120/130/150mm gun is open to discussion.
