- In this video I compare the PC version of Alan Wake from 2012 with the remaster released today (2021). My conclusion is mixed: in some situations I think the textures and lighting of the original are better, in other situations those of the remaster. The PC version from 2012 was at that time much superior to the original Xbox version from 2010 in terms of textures and resolution, so this remaster should be seen more as an improvement for Xbox players than for PC players... Which version do you find better?

The textures are mostly better but it's lost a lot of the atmosphere.
Have you played it? The atmosphere is better in most areas so far. Wake himself looks weird in this version but the atmosphere and fog effects are great.

Honestly that's what a remaster should be for video games. Especially on a masterpiece like Alan Wake where the lighting/atmosphere was already spot on.
Seems like the only reason to remaster this is to improve the Xbox version and to release it on PlayStation for the first time. The PC release has aged extremely well.
Should have left it to the backwards compat team on the xbox side and just "remaster" it for the playstation, god the og is better in almost every aspect

Remaster was mainly targeted for Consoles. PC version already looked pretty good. However remaster has higher resolution pre rendered cutscenes. That's a big plus.
My money is on they’re doing it for the sequel!

If you're going from say the 360, the remaster on console makes sense.
Owned the original pc version? Looks like no reason to touch this. It just looks off. Like alot of the lighting just is missing now.

The original looks far more cinematic and atmospheric. Prefer that over the kind of washed out, bright look.
And who at Remedy though that the face in 4:24 looks better than the one in 4:21??
The newer face is closer to the actor's face that Alan Wake is modeled after.

It's literally the same original face but more realistic looking now. He looks the same in all the games and shows. It's literally the actor's face. That is what it was always supposed to look like.
Why is nearly every remaster such a mixed bag usually? Some things are better, some things are worse.
It all comes down to time and cost. Many remasters are made to make a quick buck. So not much effort is put into them. Just the bare minimum. With many old games in the past, they had to be creative to hide the limitations of the software or hardware. Of course, is also comes down to the artistic vision of the developer at the time it was made. Not sure how they made this remaster. The new textures and characters are fine but it lost A LOT of the effects that made the original work so well. We have seen this many times by now. For some reason they think this kind of PURE CLEAN look works. But it’s just lazy.

The original ectually looks better in some scenes. In the boat crossing the river scene, the original has much better light and the background looks far better as well. Honestly, I will stick to the original. The remaster almost look like a fan made mod.

What happened to poor Alan's face? The only things I like about the remaster is the upscaled intro, shaper textures on objects and more detailed rocks. In all other cases the original looks better.
They more or less change his face to look like the actor that played the character in Bright Falls a prequel to the game.
It's literally the actors face who has been playing Alan Wake since the beginning, but now it looks more realistic.

Alan wake always looked really good on pc compared to other console ports around the its time. This remaster feels more like an update to the game. I can see the remaster being much better on consoles than pc. Because you cant tweak the graphics settings on consoles. But on pc with everything set to ultra the original looks very similar to the remaster and I dont see how they can justify the $30 price tag.
It's 11 bucks in my region.

There are a few things that look better about the original but literally it just running at a lower resolution is not one of them. You can achieve that in the remaster by just running the game at a lower resolution too.
I understand you it feels more isolated and trapped in low resolution. That’s what high graphic quality can’t deliver.

Now they look too much like trying to look like real people while not being them, and it make my whole uncanny valley go wild.
Either they should have put more effort in the character models, or not touched them and only upscaled them.

Um there are many improvements. Textures are at a higher quality. Visuals and the atmosphere is still extremely impressive. The cinematic and character models are vastly better than the original. No jarring or janky movements. The Developers even said that this was a visuals overhaul, ie a remaster, not a remake. Good example. Look at the original Resident Evil, and compare that to the HD Remake on the GameCube. Practically the SAME expect for some improved visuals and performance and better voice and sound.

So many pointless remasters these days, I can half understand the XBSX and PS5 version, but PC, why, it looks worse even that the amazing OG version.
I actually prefer the look of the original more.

@@dennisthemenace4288 The faces look completely different. Like they are other people. On the ferry at 3:03 the metal floor on which the car sits is more detailed in the original. The blue pillar behind the car. The shadows are darker, which is good for a horror game. They changed the color of the car from an off gray to a pure white for no apparent reason. There's also like a weird blue filter on top of the remaster. I don't even know why that's there.
The only thing they improved is the car texture and shadow texture. While breaking so many other things. Thanks for pointing it out.
I mainly bought this because it was over half off and I like supporting Remedy and this series. Though I must admit some of the baked lighting flourishes from the original will be missed. I don't mind the new face models because I know they're more accurate the actors portraying them.
The funny part is that it looks worse and needs better hardware to run!
I remember playing the original on my old rig which was just a Core2Duo with 2Gb of RAM, 9600GT and Windows XP and it ran great LOL
Umm what do you mean by that? There’s a stark difference between the Original PC and The Remastered. Textures are significantly sharper and easily readable. The atmosphere is still there as well. The only issues I ran into is some small stuttering in the cinematic, but honestly that can be addressed in an update. So unless you have a crappy PC or you need to switch over from HDD to SSD I don’t see the problem

What is this? Silent Hill 2 HD? Why is there less fog?
You know, this is what happens with most remasters. In pursuit of "better visuals" they break what made he originals magic. The mood and ambiance is lost. The original devs worked with a different set of tools, and managed to make memorable games. There's no point in updating the tech if it washes out or kills the original artistic vision. A big example is Shadow of the Colossus. They often make it be a different game. So technical advances do not necessarily make a better version.
It's less fog cos it's more accurate, the fog of the original was used to mask the so many imperfections of the original. The game was so demanding for the PCs of that time so many compromises were made whilst now even an obsolete GTX 1060 can render it very easy.

The fog was there to make it look like a dream, a kind of Silent Hill type idea, it was not there to hide anything, the real reason they removed more fog on the remaster, was to give the impression of longer view distances and improve performance, fog is still a heavy effect, because of the overdraw transparencies cause.
Its like everything they replaced or changed was made with a modern version they just didn't try as hard as the original developers did. They tried to make everything look real manually back then and not just let a computer do it the way this version was made. The face rigs were swapped but the effort in their complexity shows. It just looks like someone ported the game over to the latest version of unreal engine assets and called it a day. So lame.
the original hands down. the fact its an epic store exclusive is just the nail in the coffin for the game. terrible choice!
At least Epic gave away the original + DLC for free some time ago.
For alot of those shots I prefer the Original... there are things that look better on the Remaster but it looks more washed out and the dark parts aren't as dark. Like take the tornado of darkness the OG had a dark heart swirling in it and the remaster didn't have any from what I saw. Sure a lot of the people look a bit better and there is a clearly sharper texture details at time but the overall atmosphere of the OG seemed better to me.
I don't feel much of a difference other than something feels missing from the ambiance. I think it being grainy added to the horror.
Actually looks like there's less granular detail in the so-called "remaster". Certainly, overall, there's absolutely no reason to buy the remaster if you have the original on PC - there just isn't enough of a change for it to even be called a "remaster". You'd see more difference just applying some reshade effects.

There are no actual improvements here. No visible increase to texture resolution, no improved lighting effects.
So it's neither a remaster nor a remake; it's just a re-release.

@@NicholasBrakespear While I think the character models had a glow down in the remaster, this is definitely a remaster. Texture resolution and detail has obviously been improved. There’s plenty of example comparisons in the video. There’s also an increase in clutter density in many areas. Check out Digital Foundry’s graphics analysis of the game for a more in-depth look at the differences if you’re interested.
@@yigitkurtis7556 Saints Row 3 is an actual remaster they improved the visuals, lighting and the character models this is not a remaster it's a re-release. This is basically applying Reshade

I love this game. The original still hold up really well but I don't mind a remaster. The only part of it I don't like is Alan's new face model. I know they modeled it to match the motion capture actor (especially with the announcement of AW2) but it doesn't translate well here. I don't know why either, this model in this engine stands out in the worst kind of way. Maybe it's the eyes. No other model has strange eyes like Alan's in the remaster...
How do you feel about the john wick version of Alan Wake in 2?

I wish they'd have remade AW1 as well instead of remastered, get less of that uncanny look. I don't think they will but if they decided to using AW2's engine would be amazing af tbh

@@peka__ The OP judged the quality of the face based on a mistaken assumption and used that as an argument for the Remaster to be needless.
I merely point out the mistake of the assumption, i.e. what looks as a worse face to the OP is actually a closer fit to the actor's real face and thus not an indicator of bad graphics or a messup, but actually the opposite.
If someone does not care about making reasoned judgements after discovering they were mistaken about something, then I guess no, it's probably not important to them.

This is what happens when some "developer" who only ever does remasters/remakes comes in and tries to "improve" on the already outstanding original work of Remedy, a top tier developer.

I will admit it, it was extremely jarring at first, but after a good hour in I kinda appreciate Alan new face model a tad bit more especially since it’s very comparable to the AWE DLC in Control. Since in that game they actually used the Live Actor actual face.

@@kanukki84 I don't agree that's the reason, Max Payne tech was way older and limited but still represented Sam Lake face fine enough (constipated look apart :D ), and it was literally a photo of his face, slapped unto a low poly model.
In the same vein, imo in Max Payne 2 they represented well enough the real actor face and using a older and more limited engine version. So why in a more modern engine, a more powerful tech, using real time lighting and normal mapping and such, would they be unable to do the same for Alan Wake actor?! I just can't believe the tech is to blame.
To me the most probable reason is, the artist that made Alan original face model, was just not good at modeling real faces or more remote possibility, they changed actors during development. Meaning the older model, is probably the face of another actor, thou they would be very similar indeed.
Better textures, but that's about it. The character's new faces look worse, and the cinematic vibe is gone. I'll take the original on PC any day. Now, if you only ever had a playstation and never played the game, then definitely pick it up, as it is a great game.
They give everyone plastic surgery? Now they are emotionless.. some textures with decals like grime got updated with every detail scraped..
Honestly the original looks better in actual game play as the remaster looses to much of the astatic, and ambience . If but the cut scenes do look mostly better in the remaster, if you could dump the new cut scenes into the original it that would have been a better release.
Not what i expected from a Alan Wake remaster for PC from Remedy, not this company of all, how things change but here we have, IMO a almost useless remaster, on PC at lest.

I still play through this game, and the american nightmares expansion, which is also excellent, every now and then. And I did play through both less than six months ago. I was still blown away by how great they looked even now.
And looking here, they have done little to nothing to make it look much better. In fact, like some other "remasters", in some instances it looks worse than the original, I think.

@SENTRYMAN23✍🏿 It's not a "nitpick" when they are charging like £25 for something that looks the same or a lot of the time worse than the original game you are paying to have "remastered" for you.
That's the opposite of nitpicking.
It's just pointing out that the entire point of the product you are paying £25 for, is doing either nothing to benefit you, or is actually doing the opposite of what you're paying it to do.
I think you should look up the definition of nitpicking.
I'm enjoying the improved visuals. However I'm seeing weird graphics oddities. Like vertex explosions. pc version btw.

The faces and the atmosphere in the original game are much better.
3:14 the OG holds very well with much better overall view distance with more trees visible.
Original still BEST! It has that distinct lightning that gives chills.

3:52 Right here is all you need to see folks. OG game is somehow more detailed and has better lighting.
They made the daytime sections darker and the dark sections brighter. Basically colour corrected it to make it more consistent, which is an awful choice. There's supposed to be a large contrast between day and night to emphasize the power of the darkness. They also removed the darkness from the tornados and made what before looked like a menacing and unnaturally dark fog look like just normal fog...

In the remastered they appear to be disabled...

I've never seen a remaster where the faces of the characters looked so worse and so much more unnatural like in this case. How could this happen? They could just reused the old faces or just improve the 3D models but not rebuild them if the result is so worse and looks like a console generation older quality wise.
Yeah I heard that the remaster didn’t have a steam version but apparently the original still looked quite good and yeah the textures are a bit better but I’d say the only major change was the new cut scenes are significantly better but otherwise it’s not a huge difference. Will probably get the original at some point.

Some textures are better on the Remaster but the atmosphere looks way better on the original, Wake looks older on the Remaster which is strange considering he looks younger on Control/Alan Wake 2 trailer. I like Alice best in the remaster. I think both are good, and the remaster was necessary for us who could not play the original.

I can't believe how much of the original PC version amazing atmosphere has been lost in the "Remaster", just when he crosses the bridge @ 2 mins in or so the lighting is so muted and washed out in the "remaster", that thick dark murky atmosphere is also mostly gone, and then there is the fog, integral to games like this for creating that edgy, what's round the corner feeling. It must be hard to keep the OG atmosphere in these "remasters", the same thing happened for Silent Hill HD "remasters", San Andreas lost it's beautiful orange sky effect integral to the game's look, it's not the worst "remaster", and the new console versions are probably worth it for someone who hasn't played AW before, I really recommend AW American Nightmare and the SP DLC story episodes also.
I played the original long time ago, thankfully I survived episode 1, 4, 5, 6 and died many times in episode 2 and 3 which trained me for other games.

Alan's face is probably the only noticeable improvement. He finally looks like the actor from the cutout and the cutscenes.
Too bad it's a shitty Epic exclusive. Maybe someone could rip the model off and bring it to Steam as a mod?

Umm this isn’t like a resident evil 2 remake, which they completely change everything. This is merely a visual update! Personally I’m hella glad that they kept the original story and gameplay. All I wanted was improved textures and cinematic. Even the developers said they weren’t changing a damn thing, they wanted to respect and preserve the original. Go back playing Fortnite dude

Wait. Look @ 3:59 to 4:00. There is a cut and suddenly the Remaster has the sunlight and shadow. Almost like it switches. But it doesn't (looking at the character model). More like from 3:46 it doesnt render lightsource like it should.
Another interesting question would be does the remaster run worse, the same, or better than the PC version?

Somewhat improved visuals at the cost of reduced performance and a larger download size (+15GB). Never played Alan Wake, but I'll stick to the original.

If i didn't own the game already I'd have gone for the remaster. But can really justify the purchase for it at full price. Perhaps on a sale.

Add better textures and have the cinematic optimized and improved. So sorry man this is the definition of a remaster. Keeping ALL the original gameplay and story, but improved the visuals and have it widely available for other platforms.

If you already owned Alan wake on PC you dont need this remaster, in some cases the orginial has better textures and sometimes the remaster has better textures otherwise. The atmosphere is better on original tho. PC version was so much better then console back then. Remaster seems only justified on consoles.
