Anyone who thinks Brandi oversings here is crazy. She uses her awesome voice to full effect on her verses, but then completely pulls it in when she's singing with John on the choruses and melds with him beautifully. She's so respectful of him, both personally and musically, and the affection and admiration between them is palpable.
Brandi can sing, and anyone who complains misses the point of why they were friends. Besides, did those complainers remember this is not a professional recording, or maybe her mic was too loud? I guess people just want to complain instead of appreciate the opportunity to listen.
Well, Bonnie Raitt plays the song in E. John here is playing it in his original key of G, a step and a half higher than Bonnie typically sings it. Brandi has to belt it out to hit the high notes. If Bonnie sang the song in G, it would sound just like this.
Her powerful voice could easily flatten John's voice but as soon as she sings together with him, she does it so humbly and cares not to steal the limelight. Brandi, you're really a great woman !
Brandi (and I've watched her a lot) in person and online will NEVER disrespect her mentors or her elders. She will do what she is called to do in a performance. If it's play 2nd fiddle, that's what she'll do. I'll never forget seeing her quietly feed the words to a song to a younger performer (when they didn't know the words) so they wouldn't be embarrassed. She took herself out of a group performance to do so. She's about the we.
Talent. Old and new. Man and woman. Road weary and dewy eyed. She is not Bonnie. She is herself. She moderated her voice to let John take the lead on one of his best songs. Masterful.
Saw Brandi do this number in Ballard probably 20 years ago from about 20 feet away, almost brought tears to my eyes her voice is so amazingly beautiful -- still remember to this day!
For those interested, I strongly recommend that you search the RUclips video where Brandi Carlile sings hello in there on the ‘Steve call bear show. And introducing it call bear gets pretty emotional. It is clear that he is well is Brandy had great love and respect for John Prine
and when you thought that it could not get any better with Brandi singing a verse solo and the two harmonizing in the chorus ... an awesome guitar solo blows you away.
Absolutely love John Prime and Brandi sings this with so much passion she has absolutely beautiful voice. Thank you for sharing this video and God Bless 🙏🏽♥️🌹♥️
many respects for Mr. John Prine and families. just thinking we'd like to hear Bonnie & Brandi singing together on this classic song. thanks very much for posting..
Been battling through Traumatic Brain Injury for the past 6 months. A bicycle accident that I have no memory of. This song, a most beautiful version of one of my favorite all time songs--Thank you!
I've come to appreciate John Prine pretty late in life ... given I somehow failed to appreciate him for nearly fifty years until now. 'ts OK, though - and this video helps me catch up a tad more. Thanks.

Yup
You can not sing these verses in a subtle way, in my experience, at home, cleaning...

The key is high for her. She has to attack the shit out of it to stay in tune. It was awesome af.
God speaks to me in a language made of sunsets shining across rivers, bays and oceans and through the lyrics of song writers like John Prine.
Wow. That, my friend, is beautiful.

Great performance. John's expression as Brandi starts her first verse says it all! He's happy! ❤❤❤
John's face when she unleashes that voice. Happy man!
God speed Mr. Prine. May your trip to Heaven be as smooth as your playing, and Ms. Carlile's voice.
@Randy Bingham - ?? Ok.
When Brandi starts singing there is a big grin on John s face. Great song, great performance.
She's is sweet and sincere. Do not doubt this.
She sings what she means and means what she sings.

Amazing performance from two amazing artists. RIP John
The smile and nod that John gives Brandi when she starts the second verse has me in the feels. RIP John.
Prine almost misses the first chorus watching her sing. What a voice
She seems to cover every song I've ever loved, and is awesome at each and everyone of them.
I love how she holds back when she's singing with Prime Prine 😇
The joy between the two of them . RIP< beautiful John Prine and thank you for the words, songs, ideas and love.

She’s over singing when she’s solo. Geez dial it back.
