Might not be popular but I think this is my favorite version. Anybody that can combine John prine and the dead is alright in my book. 😊
I cannot imagine the soul of a guy who wrote a song like this from the perspective of an old woman when he was 24 or 25. Wrote "Hello in There" at 24. John Prine was a genius. And now artists of this stature pay him tribute every day. Thanks for that!
I saw him at the "Earl Of Old Town" across the street from "The Second City" back in the day when he was first starting out.
This song immediately got my attention for the same reason. "I am an old woman...."
Amazingly, his set list also included "Hello In There,' "Sam Stone," "Donald, and Lydia," "Paradise," and a couple of others that were fully formed, great songs. John was an amazing singer, and songwriter.
Not one clunker on his whole first album. Love that man.
Thank you very much, John.
I wanted to give your comment a thousand likes but every second, fourth, sixth ... even-numbered time I clicked on it, it would disappear so I stopped at the one thousandth and one time.
John , Charlie, damit ! Who's next! What more do you want 2020!
Age is not always the teacher, it is what the eye sees and the heart reveals.
@@brucenanney7776 Well stated!!! :0
This isn't a song, it's an experience.
Winter of 2023.. I am a fedex driver. Driving on a lone road way out in Norwood Co. Tuned in a radio station of an independent FM station coming in from Telluride. The lady DJs were putting on live cuts of bands they liked, and if it wasn't for them and my timing to stop turning the dial I'd would've never heard of this band, they played this exact song as I was driving on fresh snow (deep) on a clear no wind day, sun was shining and both bald and golden eagles were flying above me, the Elk and Deer were standing on the fresh snow grazing for whatever they could find, the wild turkeys were all around the tree line soaking up the sun.. time stood still as I slowed down to not only upset the animals but to hear such clarity and that beautiful voice. Angel from Montgomery will go to my grave. Midnight in harlem as well.. the DJs has mentioned her name Susan Teduschi and I locked on from there.. I watched on my RUclips to see if I could catch that same song (s) they played, and by the lords grace I did. I'll always remember where I was at.. and whom I was around when those tunes came into my life.. outside by myself in God's country with his creatures and what a beautiful scenery I encountered.
Love it
What a wonderful comment and description of your introduction to the Tedeschi-Trucks Band. I can picture the whole thing. Bravo!
My own intro to the TT Band was somewhat similar: speeding past S. Bend, IN (sometime in 2022, I think) and hearing "Old Harve" play this version on the local NPR station. What really nailed it for me was incorporating "Sugaree" near the end. The Grateful Dead have been my favorite rock band since 1970; had heard both songs separately many times, but not together. A revelation.
I called Harve up the following day and have listened to this track regularly ever since.
Nice thoughts.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful memory with us❤
@danielelliott5532 "fond memories is the inner strength to make the backbone to one's future " I use that moment when some days get rough, close my eyes and listen to those tunes and I return back to that time. Thanks!
June 2024, I cannot get enough of that angel singin and her guy playin that slide. beautiful!
Love you 💜
Same, same
SAME HERE !!! August 2024 !!!
RIP Kofi, this song hits different with you on the flute, you're missed.
This was the last song my boyfriend and I discovered together. Pulled to the side of a boat ramp watching the sun go down over the water. It was magic. He died 2 days later. He was my musical match. There will never be another that loves our music the way he did. I love you Josh and miss you every single day! ❤️
Peace
So sorry for your loss. Look for signs of Josh. They will be there. When you find one, look up to Heaven and smile. He is probably your guardian angel now. ❤
THank you for sharing. Sorry for your loss.
He's watching it with you.
A forever Angel to watch over you, sorry for your loss.
guys when derrick comes out watch her face!!! boom it’s instant she’s smiling the rest of the song!!! thats love guys!!!
I thought I was the only one that noticed that. Her soul just fills up when Derek starts playing ever so softly behind her.
Its our lovely secret joy with them - he is so lyrical he can scat sing wand harmonise via his guitar……glory be to God
Listen to the E-Town version of midnight in Harlem, watch her face when he starts jamming on the solo, so great and Susan looks so so happy ❤🎸🎶🎸❤️🎸🎶🙏❤️🙏
She is all smiles
They have love and respect for each other and it shows 👍
When this is the song stuck in your head all day...it's a good day.
It sure is!
100!
Great song!
Amen
Best!!!
My Lord does Susan absolutely crush this. My favorite version.
It's hard to beat this
I love Bonnie's version, but this is the first cover I had heard, so it stuck in my heart as my favorite.
YES
Beautiful
Loved her at Farm Aid 1999
There is just so much great American music wrapped up in this performance. John Prine. Garcia and Hunter. Bonnie Raitt. Duane Allman. It's all here, folks. Tedeschi Trucks is not a band as much as it is an American institution. Beyond words.
you wrote exactly what I was thinking. This band is the full package; soul, every member is beyond talented. Just so very rare and spectacular and talented!
TTB is so awesome. Try to see them whenever they are in town. Such talent!
Elizabeth Cotton too!...She started it
YES
@@himals92Elizabeth Cotton -- what a legend -- so few people know of her today.
I was listening to this beautiful song in my car.
I saw an old lady (85+) begging in the street here in Miami with her husband on the side of the road in wheelchair
I rolled my window down, gave her $100 and told her to believe in angels. She started sobbing.
Thank you Susan - you sing this song so beautifully - like an Angel.
God bless you ❤❤❤
Thank you for making what matters in the world go around.
Being kind is never a waste…..
God bless.

My favorite version.
Listening to this on repeat walking from Rome to Istanbul with my dog, the Greek mountains on my left shoulder and the Thracian Sea on my right, sun and clouds above- dog looks up at me and smiles- I return the smile
May the planet be with you, may love rest on your shoulders
You shall hear a whisper, walk ye in it
Every time Derek solo Susan becomes a fan girl and just stares at him. They are such a great couple
Her little smile when trucks steps onstage…. Everything about this video is so lovely
Greatest thing about this band is they crave the music.its about the songs, not being a celebrity or famous..true musicians of the soul.
Well done here! We have Musicianship and Showmanship. Most of this world craves and puts Showmanship on the pedestal while missing out on talent that is SO much better.
I concur 👍🏻
That flute solo is THE BOMB
RIP Kofi
“How the hell can a person go to work in the morning and come home in the evening and have nothing to say?” Just one line has so much meaning behind it. Gets me every single time.
There is always one line that grabs you in a song..love that you said that.....words are so powerful..
I agree, that line has always stuck out at me.
I feel it too. That one line.
Bless you.
That line breaks my heart, every time.
@@RandyTheBee it's because we've all been there, and know what it's like....UGH.....
Love this!! She looks at Derek the way i looked at my husband. He died at 47. Never thought id be a widow at 43. Still love him everyday.
Your post is so sad yet so beautiful. I've just been deserted, lied to, cheated, double-timed by a woman after what I thought were 12 happy years. She didn't even have the heart to be truthful and leave when I found her out. I'd say you are closer to happiness than her. Your love will remain and your love will find a new home. You'll be alright.
I have a very similar story as yours. Mine passed at 47 too. We used to play our guitar's together when we first fell in love. I miss him awfully when I hear this.
Bless you all. I'm in search for love ❤
That is the most heartbreakingly beautiful thing I’ve read all week. I’m sorry for your loss but I know you have some amazing memories and he will always be with you. Keep your chin up you beautiful soul.
Wow. Powerfully poignant... blessings and happiness to you.
That smile when Derek comes in .. ... she knows what coming !!! What a beautiful rendition . PURE!!!!
yep i glad you read the comments and just said what i did!!! your so original in your thinking 😂
How cool that this song started off with Susan by herself…then little by little everyone joins in and makes it such a live masterpiece
Holy-smoke, what a beautiful performance. ❤
After 10 years it’s still the best version ever “Just Perfection”……..

@@o1durango 100% agree with you! ;-)
Kofi on that flute gives me goosebumps EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!! RIP
RIP KOFI.....
Lol....Jethro Tull ' like... lol. Nope
I'm a guitar player and I originally watched this video to see and hear Susan and Derek's interplay, I come back at least once a day for Kofi's magnificent Flute playing. RIP my brother, your playing soothes my soul.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Strong Marshal Tucker vibes
Susans voice is on par with Bonnie Raitts, which makes her one of the greatest female singers of all time . Derek is the greatest slide player to ever live ,PERIOD! Even Duane would say that if he were here. And a song written by one of the best to ever pick up a pen ?? Come on! ..The fact that this band isn't topping the charts is just proof that people don't understand artistry anymore. It saddens me that everyone on the street hasn't heard of Tedeschi/Trucks.
Bonnie Raite sounds like a girl. Susan Tedeski sounds like a Woman.
Derek is great, but no way is he better then Skydog.
I like that they aren’t well-known. I love introducing them to people who will appreciate em. It’s like a secret club (yes, I know I sound 7 years old).
@@rickpinter5888 in one way,his name isn't Skydog. So ,there's that.
@@goonsie1 No,that's totally understandable. I get that .
Found this gem from a stranger's playlist! 💙
Absolutely perfect.Mr. Prine is smiling down.
Funny how one day a 360 view of our entire life opens up like a window - melancholy past, disappointing present & yet still yearning for a better future
I don’t know what my “one thing Lord that I can hold on to” is, or was. But their talent is amazing! They perform that song better than I’ve ever done anything in my life!
The fact that this video has 10 million views and is tied with Bonnie Raitt’s 10 million views for the same song just tells you how Susan Tedesci nailed it. So good!
Fabulous...going to see them in August..Susan nails this...love how the band slowly sneaks in the back door😊
RIP Kofi. I'm a guitar guy, but I watch this video over and over for two reasons: the way Susan looks at Derek when he comes out and that flute solo. Both of them are amazing expressions of love.
Yes. And the way Susan sings this song is another expression of love. Brings me to tears.
My heart broke when I saw the flautist RIP Kofi 💔
the best!!

Three Fender Super Reverb Amps in a row! The sight, the sound!
Love this band. They've been around longer than I knew. Glad I found them.
Great duo for sure...
This is the way John Prime expect this song to go...Susan and Derek Rock!
One of the most beautiful, sad, layered, spiritual songs ever performed.
Before its too late....can we get emmylou, bonnie raitt, and Susan together?
I’m behind that idea 100% absolutely
I just saw Tedeschi/Trucks Band Performing with Willie Nelson in Raleigh NC tonight. I first heard Susan over 20 years ago at the Palace Theatre in Louisville Kentucky and I have loved her since, but tonight was a spiritual experience and she has more power and range in her voice than ever….. I am a musician and I have played since I was a teenager and believe Susan belongs in the Hall of Fame and I love her now more than ever 🎶💜🎶 the band took us all to church tonight…..🎶🕊️💜🕊️🎶🙏😜🤟
Some people's passing is quiet, like a ship passing through the night...when we lost John Prine we lost big, and will feel that loss for a very long time.
I never heard a flute I liked until I saw this masterpiece.
I could listen to her sing the phonebook. What a songbird.
agreed!!!
Aardvark, Adam...Aardvark, Amy...sounds good to me MJ!
"Amen Brother"
or the contents off a cereal box
or a warranty for that matter. the fine print, all of it. I cannot get enough of them. I LOVE them together. She puts Bonnie to shame on this song, since so many compare them to one another. (Susan is far more refined if you ask me)
ThanKU sweet SugARee’❤️👑🩸☝️💕Amazing Grace How Sweet U ALL souNd!!!
The Tedeschi Trucks band is one of just a few carrying the torch for American rhythm and blues music. They're steeped in the tradition of southern roots rockers like the Allman Brothers and Delaney and Bonnie.
Susan is from Boston even though she doesn't sound like it.
ReaL music
Robert They all play together and carry that torch together. Chris Robinson , Tedeschi trucks, the dead, etc are doing it!! I was concerned when Jerry died.

They bring so many awesome musicians with them. especially the dap kings
Got to hold my hands up and say i hadn't heard of Susan Tedeschi until this was played at the end of an episode of "Clarice" Glad i found out about her.... what a voice ❤❤
I hope you explored more of their music. She is phenomenal, as is her husband, Derek Trucks, on slide guitar.
I saw Susan for the first time at a Blues Festival in my hometown of Quincy Ma early 90s her hometown of Norwell Ma is about 25 miles away she was just starting out then, to be able to see her early before she was known is a blessing
I can’t take how beautiful her voice is. It’s too much to fathom. It’s crushing me, otherworldly.
Yes, I'm shaking and my eyes are water, immense love.
I never dreamed anyone could do this as good as the great Bonnie Raitt. Until I heard this woman!!!! Beyond soulful!!!
Say It Again
Me too, I love this cover. Just wonderful.
I have listened to both. Susan wins.
Amazing how music can resonates way beyond borders. I'm listinening to it from a small town over here in the Indian Himalayas.. Namaste to all great souls over here.
You do this song much justice. I imagine John would be proud.
He is smiling down from above!
Indeed. She nails it, the flute player too. Oh, and her husband plays pretty good too. Wow.

Top notch and that coming from 50 years in the business
Just love the way Susan looks at Derek when he smashes his solo. They really are a couple made in heaven. Her voice is beyond compare.
I so agree Dude...
I couldn't agree more Michael....I also love the part when he starts to play and she knows he is there....they are truly magical together on stage...
@Donna no argument from me.. just love this band. Actually they're more of a team with Derek and Susan the team leaders.
its got to be a great feeling to know D T will come in and absolutely kill it
I wake up to an Angel singing to me everyday, thankyou Babe
Saw an interview with Derick Trucks and the guy asked him how he made a cord while playing and he said Let me play it again And I’ll watch this time! What a treasure
Man, anyone brave enough to take on this Raitt/Prine *classic* is full-bore guts. Then to pull off one of THE best renditions. Fantastic.

Quickly becoming….he started playing with the Brothers in 2000. He reached legend status long ago
Derek the greatest of all
This is American rock/soul music at its pinnacle. No fireworks or explosions or screaming nonsense. Or hip hop garbage. John Prine was a genius. Full of wisdom and love and everyday prose. Susan is an angel and Derek is the image and reincarnation of Duane.
American rock was always about people and life grounded in Black blues. It was never meant to be played at 1000 volume.
The band here is an ethnic mix of great talents. Like America is.
Beautiful.
Yes it is. This nation is special. I think our nation need to remember how great it can be to those who take advantage of it
Well, Don, you focused right in on the ESSENCE of Rock/Soul Music and a Big part of being American.

I'm 54,grew up with the best of best bands Derek Trucksand Susan T best since SRV. Yeah I said it!!
Prine was a poet. He and Guy Clark made the music that I grew up on
She's better than she gets praised for!! A new artist that deserves more accolades than mainstream will bestow on her tremendous talent!
Susan had her band for years before Derek, she's a veteran.
Susan nails this! And Kofi's solo is icing. And of course Derek! What depth and texture!
I saw Tedeschi Trucks in Philadelphia. Susan sang this song. I felt like I died and went to heaven.
I could hear her sing all day everyday, this is a beautiful song ✌️
Who in the hell would give this a thumbs down????? Unbelievable? What soul and emotion in this performance! :) Beautiful.

The rich timbre of that flute is something. Absolutely beautiful.
Susan never fails She’s so amazing. She moves me with her voice every time. I could listen to this every night. Wait. I do.
As a lifelong Bonnie Raitt fan, why have I not heard of these two doing this song? So happy to see the mantle being passed. Angel sounds new all over again.
Oooh, well said!! And I have the same question; why aren't they more well known?
Oh that would be so excellent. I've seen both solo--
I've seen Bonnie do this song up close at a small club, The Shaboo Inn, CT, and I caught Susan live at UCONN and I've always liked Susan's cover the best!

I am honored to say that I’ve followed Susan since my early 20’s, when she came out with the album with Winnie the Pooh stickers on her guitar. She had her lullaby album same time as I had my children. My kids grew up listening to all her albums. I remember her opening for B B King in Pgh when I was EXTREMELY pregnant. I had to leave after her set, but I only came for her anyway. My daughter has been stealing her CD’s from my room since she was 3. She 17 years old now, and we don’t have too wonder where the cd’ is. I’ve downloaded all of them on our phones...... Susan, if you read this, you have been with me during life’s happiest and most tragic moments in my life. What a beautiful gift God has given you! Thank you for sharing it with your fans. I know you do it for the artist in you, and with the band, And touring, I for sure know you aren’t rolling in the money. Your sound can’t be compared to any other artist in my humble opinion. If I am correct, it might be 25 years of following your career. You are my absolute favorite. May God bless you, your family and your band.

Wonderful tribute to Susan! I only started listening to her in 2002. I had no clue she existed until ONE day I heard this voice singing this song & I thought..."that's not Bonnie" (Raitt) who I've been a huge fan of for many, many years (I'm 57). Similar to your story, Bonnie got me through some very, very dark times. I am so happy I have been able to see Susan & Derek. Hope to see them again. My first concert though I was 15 or 16 was Bonnie Raitt & John Prine. I am still listening to them today. :)
Im honored to say i played bass w Sue during the "pooh sticker" era(97-99) opening for BBking and many other blues greats. It was a way smaller band then-and its likely I was playing at one of those shows you saw... She is still a good friend. I was quite blessed to get to play with her.. Of course back then this tune was a staple... She would be very touched by your story.
