My 2 year old 800s are still the most comfortable set I’ve owned. I tried 4 different sets 2 years ago before landing in them. The flip up mic just started crackling when flipping up and down the 2 nights ago. Time for a new pair. Good timing for this Video.
The original rig line of headphones were legit legit. Comfortable, neutral sound, lightweight and durable. Doesn’t get spicy on your ears. Great for people who prefer open sounding headphones. I just got to the sound quality part and idk if these are using new drivers but the older rig 500s compared favorably with my hd 555s in sound quality and soundstage. Enough so that i stuck with the 500s for gaming and retired my hd 555s to music listening only.
I still have the plantronic rig 500HD, i'm looking for a wireless option. Tried the corsair HS80 rgb wireless. It sounds worse out of the box, weighs a ton and squeezes your head. I'm going to return them. The 500's you can have on your head all day and not even notice them + the music sounds fantastic. Amazing thing and i paid like 50 bucks for them. The only reason why i'm looking at a wireless replacement is that the cables tangle up occasionally.
@@RichHomieBodhi yeah, the 700's have a pretty poor battery life and it doesn't have a fold-to-mute mic, but the 800 looks something i'm interested in looking at. Just need to find someplace to try them.
As someone who owned older versions of these, what would you suggest getting instead? I'm very similar to you. I really love how they feel. I really love how comfortable they are. They aren't really awful in any area. But I do want something better rather than just buying the newest version.
I just purchased 700hx and they are the lightest and most comfortable headset I’ve ever tried. I’ve tried all headsets from hyper X, Astros, turtle beach and the list goes on. I installed a Dolby Atmos and I think they sound pretty good. I was thinking about picking up the steel series arctic 7X that would work for both my Xbox and PlayStation. What do you think of those?
I still have my RIG 500HD, even though it is showing some wear and tear after the or so years I have it, I love it! one thing that pissed me off about the ownership company change was the inability to find the old driver software which had a pretty good EQ and bunch of other useful settings. I was actually thinking about switching to another headset due to the audio being not great without the old software. Luckily after some time I managed to find the install file on some random website :D
I still got my rig 500e I bought like 7 years ago and it's slowly starting to not work anymore I think (have yet to test it over a different channel but it randomly cuts out at times) Only had to replace the pads once since then. Im thinking of going to a wireless platform because the wire is really annoying but when I see the mic quality on all of these Im shocked at how little it improved. I feel like my 500E still sounds better than any wireless headset (even the ones that cost 500 bucks). The fact that I paid 100 bucks for my headset back then is just sad how they're even allowed to sell it at these prices. I feel like more and more products are made to break sooner as well. Im kind of sad to let go of this headset, it served me well so long :(
I LOVE the RIG 500 PRO EX, the only REALLY bad and annoying this is the WIRE. The wire is honestly just terrible, I have had 2 pairs of the 500 EX and the wire has started acting up for both of them after a couple of months, if you even slightly move your head you will hear static and then the audio will only come out of the left ear and it gets tangled way to easily. The mic is actually AMAZING for the price though (I got my second pair for about 40AUD full price in late 2022, first one I bought was 80AUD in early 2021 full price) but the mic sometimes gets jammed in when you flip it up a bit too hard, and when you unattach and reattach the mic you have to put pressure on the little piece of plastic that has the thing that clips onto the mic and it can dislocate, and that's how my first one broke. Overall great headset would recommend, great price and build quality, just watch out with the wire and don't flip the mic up to hard or fast.\ 14/01/24: Surprise surprise the wire now only comes out of the right ear only a year later of having the headset
You should try to get a set of rig 800 hx . Considering you started with this company and you know the headsets well it would be nice to hear your thoughts on those !
As a owner of the step down from this (The Rig 700Pro HX for about 100$) It looks to be almost identical in design and function, besides the mic- the drivers even seem to be identical. After just 1 year of ownership, range has noticeably decreased- and was never anywhere near as good as the 800 is (according to the review) It's more like the 20~30ft claim on the box, and will frequently disconnect if I go into another room with any wall in the way. It's probably working at 90% its original range. I will praise however, no matter how hard I shake my head or run around the room- audio is never scuffed, dropped or pops. I would also like to mention that EVERY TIME you do anything with the power or connect/disconnect the headset has a built in lady who tells you that it happens every time- and its one of the most annoying features I've ever met in the maybe 5~ headsets I've owned over the years- goddamn is it annoying to drop audio for half a second and listen to this lady tell you "HEADSET NOT CONNECTED" then "HEADSET CONNECTED" this has actually caused me to rage a few times, since it happens every time I leave to go to the bathroom or to the sink in the room over from me, infuriating, much would rather it say nothing or just play a varied soft sound fx. The sound wheel (identical design) is horribly unresponsive, skipping across numbers, sometimes not responding at all until multiple spins, likewise the power button has begun to present unresponsiveness as well- sometimes requiring to be held down multiple times to finally get it to turn on/off although this happens fairly rarely. The wheel is defective with every use- and I keep my hands as clean as possible. Audio quality is noticeably worse than my last pair of headphones (Roccat Khans) which were wired, however it's been so long since my Khans weren't broken (I was headbanging and standing away from the pc a bit and headbanged the usb along with the slot apart) They are heavier than the Khans, and the Mic quality is absolutely terrible in comparison, the khans could be worn all day with no fatigue, these will begin presenting fatigue (with glasses) after an hour or few. Needing a break after use. The Battery is pretty annoying, 12 hours is already pushing the lower end of battery life imo and I've frequently run into problems having to charge it after an extended 6~ hour session of gaming or music. It hasn't seemed to lost lifetime though, however the biggest problem with the battery is the charging- the micro-usb slot has lost its strength to hold the plug-in... meaning you really have to baby it to keep it plugged in, and make sure it doesn't get shaken or moved around afterwards, its pretty damn annoying. I've got some Audeze Maxwells for my birthday which are on their way, so hopefully they are a large step up.
A lot of stores like Wal-Mart and Target are getting rid of their old stock of Gen1 headsets of the 400 and 500 series. I bought my Wal-Mart's last 500 Pro HX for $17.47. I also bought a 400 HX for $22.89 at my Target.
You can get these dirt cheap renewed on Amazon now. I'm about to grab a pair. I had the 400s before and they were so comfortable. Even new they were great headsets for the price.

I pulled the trigger and bought the Bluetooth RIG 700HK Camo black and grey headphones. For $100 for My Xbox Series S there not bad and they come with a redeem code for Dolby Atmos ,the Dolby makes the sound even better for $100 I give them a 8 out of 10 👍👍 BTW the wired ones cost $50 dollars.
