Excellent informative video Dawn, and after 50 years as a detectorist all I can add is that in my experience not all coils are created equal, there are lots of different aftermarket coil manufacturers and there are genuine coils made by the detector manufacturer. On the whole I have found that the genuine coils work more consistently with the machine they were designed for and the aftermarket coils are a bit hit and miss with their performance. What I am trying to say is that some work better than others, some larger coils will pinpoint better than others and some will gain a slight increase in depth depending on soil conditions and contamination, and I have had other large coils that make the detector so unstable/chattery and sparky that they are virtually unusable. One large coil that I bought some years ago was so bad that I had to send it back for a refund. The reason why larger coils can give a slight increase in depth is because the size of the electromagnetic field has been increased with the larger coil size, and because that field is tapered as it goes into the ground it has a slightly larger size at maximum depth, remember that if a coin is 10" deep, the size of the electromagnetic field at the depth of 10" is very small compared to the actual size of the coil you are using, and with a small coil that area is tiny and it is very easy to miss targets, but very good as you say for getting around obstacles and dealing with heavy contamination from nails etc. Unfortunately the only way to assess these coils for yourself, is to buy one and try it on the type of land you normally detect on, some people have no trouble pinpointing with a larger coil but others may struggle, and it's a bit like having to learn the machine all over again, because the coils may make the signals respond in a different way.
Good advice Jon. I use the the 15 inch that came with the nox 800 and so far approx 20 silvers, one gold half sovereign, one 19 century gold ring and a 400 year old axe head, all found with the original coil and within my first 9 months. i purchased a coiltek 10 x 5 and i just can not make it work for me. i even emailed the manufacturer and they gave me some good advice, see copied below "Hi Gary, I hope I can assist as the 15” coil is definitely a deeper searcher than any other Equinox coil. This is because it is a round 15” and the field is broad and deep searching. Is the 15” coil you have the Minelab 15x13” or the Coiltek 15” Round? When burying targets for test you will never get the same result as an undug target and these tests will not provide an accurate depth response of an undug target. This is essentially an air test but can be a good reference to a degree - when we test each coil in house it is only an air test to check comparative depths between coils to ensure they are meeting our expectations. The 10x5” coil would never see as deep as the 15” coils due to its smaller field range. It will have heightened sensitivity due to it being smaller as the field is essentially concentrated in a smaller shape. So I would not expect the 10x5” to match a 15” coil on a coin at depth. The 10x5” benefit is manoeuvrability to get in and around debris and rocks, pinpointing is easier due to the elliptical shape, sensitivity to the smaller targets at good depth and easy to swing all day. Smaller coils have less depth ability on larger targets and more sensitivity to the smaller targets. Larger coils are the opposite - better on larger targets at depth but less sensitivity to the smaller targets. For the settings, continue to use it in a similar way to the other coils, the detector does not require a reset to run the coil. You may be able to push the sensitivity up on the detector so go as high as possible so it is not too chattery. Use the swing speed recovery at 2-4 depending on how you swing. It does not sound like the coil is faulty and may just need some time for you to build confidence in its ability and where best to use the coil - it is a great option for the Equinox detectors and we are here to assist if you have any more questions or concerns. Very valid question Ian 👍and very informative answers Dawn 👏. The small coils are a lot of fun to use in tight areas and are so good in a back yard that it becomes like searching a field with a standard coil, you just scale everything down and you can find some amazing stuff.

I even contacted the manufacturer in Australia and below is their reply. I'm in Australia just purchased a gold bug with 5 inch coil I will be going out looking for gold I think the 5 inch coil will be fine for this maybe why it was fitted with 5 inch coil to focus on gold and small pieces of it thankyou for your video it's made things alot more clearer to me.
Hello Dawn, with the large coil in the Apex, apart from the depth gain and being multi-frequency, it would help with high frequencies not to lose small targets, don't you think? Thanks for the good video Greetings from Spain 👋🏻👋🏻

I would need a harness for those monster coils !!!
Yes and a lot of patience trying to pinpoint the target hah
I enjoyed your video!! and good luck to you.
Thanks so much!!
Big coil are great in low trash areas. Buy I've found in parks you'll do much better with small coils. Right up against porch areas ect. Good job Dawn

You are the best.
Thank you
Guys what is the best size of coil when searching 1-4 meters deep above the ground and what ohm's?
For example the target is above 15kilos of metal
youre not going to reach 4 metre depths with a metal detector, you would need something specialist
😁👍
