I recently purchased a 2015 model military detector at auction. This machine is designed to detect the tiny particulate metal that is present in buried plastic explosives. The ability of this machine to pick up a dime sized target at extreme depths is nothing short of astounding. Honestly, i have detected modern pennies and dimes at 15+ inches, and quarter sized objects at 18 to 20. The downside to this machine is that it has no discrimination whatsoever. But, in hunted out areas or relic sites this military machine will get down to incredible depths that no other machine can touch. I don't know if this detector has this ability because its military rated and FCC regulations do not apply to it or what. The best part is that the US military paid thousands of dollars for it and i bought it at auction for 75 bucks. The purpose of this post is just to emphasize that there are machines out there that will detect very small targets at 15 to 20 inches deep. Whether or not they are FCC compliant is anyones guess. Either way, i'm going to continue to use this little hot rod at selected sites until someone gives me official reason as to why i cannot

@@MetalDetectingDonnaanalog machines have an advantage over the digital machines. My Whites UL-2 can go deeper than my AT Pros and Max. I don't know what type of metal it is but when it's so deep the Garrett's don't hear it it's probably pretty old.
I've dug targets 20" deep that I heard quite clearly. And never got a grunt or chirp out of the Garrett's. But the down side is, it takes six C batteries and it is a little heavy. But it's my final sweep machine just to make sure I didn't miss anything.
Can easliy wire up a lithium pack to it inatead of C batteries.
When I was swinging the AT Max in Saltwater, I would use -3 threshold to reduce chatter caused by black sand at the beach. I also set my iron discrimination to 42-44 . Some beaches will cause lots of chatter based on conditions, and all beaches are a litlle different in how much you have to adjust the threshold. On the Nox 800 I seldom have to adjust threshold because Minelab is known for finding targets in heavily mineralized soil and sand.

This appears to be a pulse induction machine, which explains the depth. It also explains how he can fully the coil and get some signal on the edge. The fact that it can drive that giant coil (the 4 ft diameter coil) tells me it has a really powerful signal, which would probably be squashed by our FCC (wouldn't want to ruin the neighbors TV reception).
The other coil (30 inch) is easily doable even in the U.S., and in fact you can run huge coils on the minelab GP & GPX series machines. I have a 24" mono for my GP3500, which is a real pain to swing all day.
If you really want depth, you go to a 2 box detector like Fisher Gemini or the Whites TM 808 (not produced anymore but still available used). The trouble with 2 box detectors is they will ignore a single coin and most trash, but find a garbage can buried about 12-15 feet, and strong boxes full of coins or gold.
This was simply an outstanding episode. Not that all your series is not great content and entertaining but in this episode your subject was beyond what everyone does in an echo chamber. This was on the cutting edge. Please sleuth us some more of this kind of content. Even if it's every month,
We use my JW Fishers Pulse 8 with the 16 inch coil for something like this. Great for laying out the boundaries of old sites where targets have been turned in deep by the timber companies. Mark a very deep target, take off a foot or so of dirt then hit it with your regular detector to determine if you want to keep going after it. Lots of work.
Wow! Finding targets deep is always a challenge. Requiring a backhoe is a whole different ballgame.

That's what makes videos about old road tear ups so interesting. I've spotted some streets that still have the old trolley tracks embedded in them. We also have cobble streets in the historic doc sectors. Your looking at 17th or 18th century. Imagine getting the permission from some green project manager working for the guy who passes brown envelopes to obtain sweet contracts. You know that the historical stuff will be lost to a greedy boss. If there's an honest to god archeological crew anywhere around this road, Don't even think of it beyond offering your service if that interests you. .
I have run the GP3000 & 3500, the GPX4500, 5000 & 6000.
I currently use the GPZ7000 and X-Coils.
I have tried threshold on and off, on allows you to here the slightest change and the either smallest or deepest targets.
I'm in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia and I only hunt for gold.
With big coils you DO NOT have to dig big holes, if you can pin point the target using the coil, you keep digging a smaller hole and wave the large coil over the hole. If the target is still in the hole, it will still make a noise, if it's not in the hole, no noise!
I've hunter with 25" mono and DD coils and now the 22cc coil
In the UK we mostly detect on farm land, the plough brings the coins up from depth to within 0-8 inches. The soil conditions affect depth dry soil gives less depth, whereas damp soil always gives extra depth.
My Minelab Etrac has found 4 Indian head cents and 2 Lincoln cents at 14 Inches deep. Carefully dug holes here in Minnesota.I will keep my Etrac.

He doesn't have 100,000 because other channels got an earlier start. They may not be as good, but that's how it goes.
Hello Merrill, a Roman coin at this depth is probably a tomb. I found with an XP Gmaxx2, a sestertius at 40cm, it was a tomb because there was also a fibula. Thierry from Belgium.

Romans did place a coin in the mouth of the dead but I doubt this was a tomb. There would certainly be other artifacts if it were. It's also highly likely there would be some remnants of the skull as well. Coin drops are pretty common, even today.
@@MrBottlecapBill Who knows, nothing is specified in the video whether or not there were other artifacts. But from personal experience, Roman coins are never that deep unless put there intentionally and the bones are completely gone.
Word to the wise, technology is only going to get better in the future. The way this guy is chucking bones outta the hole... and those of you that have gold fillings... just sayin.
Yes I use threshold, but not all of the time. I like it in the salt and ideally little emi and the beach is quieter. No waves crashing or noisy kids etc

Great video Merrill, I use my threshold at 2 on my equinox, we hunt mainly colonial fields. That being said, the threshold will “cut out” if you go over a super deep target just for a second and as no one has their coil directly on the ground when they swing, it alerts me to get a little closer and investigate by kicking away debris, weeds etc and see if the machine can pick up an audio signal. To be completely honest, it’s usually big iron but sometimes it’s something good. I found my oldest Spanish silver coin in just such a situation. Also, if you’re going to use this technique successfully, the ground needs to be fairly free of iron litter. Looking forward to seeing what Nexus has to say.

I find threshold to be very useful in locating deep "blips" on my nox. The threshold hum makes me focus on the volume of the hum, so when I hear a "break" (slight audio response) in it, I know that I have come across a target.
That was a 100% real dig. Dont know if it is more practical there or here. But you would need to try and see. I think it works best on dirt road or farm field with 1 target only. I think if it worked well with 2 objects side by side he would have made that video. Very cool to see and know. But in our world its not practical. I dont think our 1800s coins are even that deep anyway. He looks like he chose the 1st spot and scored. Here we would need 100s of years to find a 1700 or earlier. what a life over there. Can you imagine how gassed you would be after striking out on 3 holes at 10" or deeper. Got another sub that just posted this detector yesterday. LOL
Used to have an nautilus DMC 2B, I'm getting those vibes from watching this, that thing was a beast as far as depth does, but was super heavy and cumbersome, a literal wrist destroyer. I'll have to look into this unit, nice to see natural finds in the field vs planted objects, really shows what you can expect on compacted ground, vs re tilled dirt
Have personally seen the Nexus in action. And when set up properly these machines far outperform any others I have seen. That coupled with great build quality make them excellent machines for people who don't need all the unesasary bells and whistles like a clock etc (really useful when detecting). !

In all Metal Mode the Threshold Tone is used for TARGETS slightly outside the Range of the Detector/Coil..
Instead of a BEEP you will hear a small THRESHOLD TONE WOBBLE while using Headphones. Eg: Gold under a Tree Root or Rock
The Threshold Tone and Ground Exclusion Balance or GEB are 2 of the Most Important Settings to Understand and Master.
Yes I use threshold..it will help let you know if you need slow down and investigate sound.
Yes I have used threshold on the Deus 1 and 2…. only when the ground is extremely quiet.
It might be the most overlooked function in metal detecting!

The extra large coil would be great for meteorites, a guy I used to work with designed very large PI coils specific for this task. He ran a Minelab CTX3030 with a 17” coil similar to those used in the gold fields for pinpointing.
The ctx3030 would pick that sestertius up at the depth the guy got this. Ive got one with the 17" coil
I told you Merrill, large coils has less sensitivity to smaller target, it's just simple phyisics!!!! Bulgarians are very good in metal detectors! Golden Mask is a good company and more bigger then Nexus, Nexus is more unique(a bulgarian guy started Nexus in the UK)! There is Troy and Pirate detectors too. I have bulgarian detectors in my collection, very cool machines.

You should always use threshold on a metal detector. it should be adjusted to where you can only just hear it. Any lowere and you may miss small targets
In the Nexus case larger coils are not more susceptible to interference. You can go right under power lines with any huge Nexus coil.
I began detecting in 1972 using a BFO (beat frequency oscillator) Bounty Hunter I, it ran better with a higher threshold. I then bought a White's coinmaster IV in 1975. Same thing, it was a much better machine with a higher threshold, and would detect much deeper. I used to own a vintage Gardiner detector that had a 12" wooden coil that had the wiring encased in the wood. It also had a 30" wire loop coil. Strange machine. It had something wrong with it though. When the temperature got very hot outside it would go whacky and not work.

Hello Merrill, I mean good morning. To wake up early and see you on you tube first thing is a good thing. It is a plesant supprise to see you have a new video. OK, I turn on my detector and have no idea where the "threshold" is set. I used to tinker with threshold and it seemed to make no difference. Next at 14:37 quote "you swong that and found targets you didn't know where there with other detectors". Merrill, I keep going back to places I've hunted before, with my NOX 800, places I've scoured with the NOX, and am finding silver. Lots of silver. So much silver I am blown away. Just yesterday, I dug three silver dimes 8 - 9 inches deep in less than an hour, that the NOX could not find or my E-trac, or the Garrett AT Max. The grass/dirt was very dry. I believe The Hunter GT programmed my Deus II to get maxium depth. At the beach, you need a backhoe. The best part, the signals are clear and repeat swinging in multiple directions. Now, I am waiting for the day (video) where you go out to your old haunts and find silver the way I am. Have a good day.
My buddy hunts with the standard mp with it looks like a solid disk for a coil, they sent that to him for free to try out, I think he has had it for over five years. It has two different color lights, one for ferrous and one for nonferrous. We are in Southern California where the coins usually 4 inches or less in depth, so I can't comment on the depth. I think they have been good about communicating with him.

yes, I've adjusted my old Whites 5000D to respond that way, and it doubled the depth. I set it 100% by ear using my ring on floor of my living room. the sensitivity, frequency, volume were all turned up. the discrimination, was turned OFF.

I wonder how restricted metal detector manufacturers are by the F.C.C. pertaining to transmit power and interference? That might be limiting the full capabilities of detectors.
That is an excellent question that I only recently tuned in to with the Manticore release! I will be looking in to this!
All radio frequency devices sold in the USA or imported are strictly controlled by the FCC.
I think it’s limited to 4 watts
Metal Detectors are designed to transmit a magnetic signal, not an electromagnetic(Radio Wave) signal. The coil is also normally in the wrong plane for radio receivers.
But all metal detector frequency bands are used for VLF radio transmissions to submarines. The transmitters need tens of thousands of Watts or even Megawatts to get enough power to reach the sub under sea water. But detectors are probably affected by those transmissions.
Hobby Detectors don't have big transmit(TR) power and use VLF like audio amps to your speaker coil without a membrane, but very small output compare to a Hi-Fi 0,5W output mostly not 100W stereo! Mostly they try to use the receiving amps up, so Nokta Simpley+, old Deuses are very chatty, because the RX power was the focus! The main point too much transmit power costs a lot of energy and depends on the soil and not efficient 200%(double) TR power gives you only 20-30% more depth! Most detectors has the output of 0,2-0,5 watt ouput maximum! I have custom detectors can transmit 1.8-2.2 watts output what is very big in hobby motion nduction Balance IB( I only use 1.3 watts tops in special cicumstances mostly 0.9W) The problem with big TR more false and "shadow" signals came back and you need complicated software to analyze it and very big capacity batteries to use it which is pricey too.

Do you remember the show "Meteorite Men" they made their own coils out of pvc pipe and both would carry it. They would find an iron mereorite the size of a quarter 6 feet down..
Just for the record metal detecting and treasure hunting in Bulgaria is illegal. Digging Roman site can equal to 5 years jail time. On the other hand producing and trading with metal detectors is not illegal in Bulgaria. It is a tricky situation. This guy is taking a risk with this video to promote the detector. And he speaks English, targeting foreign buyers. These detectors are sturdy and they do what is written on the box better than most. Good work Merrill !
My minelab gt is a bit like that, I hunt in all metal with a threshold and if you have it in pinpoint it goes incredibly deep
My Nokta Makro Kruzer, which is much like the anfibio has what's called GEN mode. It's similar to what he seems to be using here and what you describe. Basically it's like full time pinpoint mode with adjustable threshold. Crazy sensitive and deep. In most cases way TOO sensitive as it will even sound off on large stones or shifting soil layers sometimes so it can be tough to use in most locations. I use it in deep sand at the beach where other machines and modes just can't penetrate to the deep stuff. I still dig a lot of false targets but I also pull up the gold and relics way down there. Judging by the homogenous soil in this video it's the perfect mode to use.
Threshold comment.... YES! I mostly use an Etrac which offers a threshold setting. Now the Legend offers threshold too! Having cut my teeth on single frequency machines, virtually ALL of them had a threshold setting. The best and most sensitive way to operate the machine was to ground balance and then adjust so one had a very slight, but audible, threshold hum in the background. This made the machine very sensitive to small metal targets, as any variation in signal either caused a positive signal for a target, or a "null" (blanking) threshold signal volume reduction when going over some target you chose to reject. When a detector is set to have a silent threshold, you never know how far into the "silent" range it is. Small targets have to overcome that "null" zone before they become audible. So, very small target signals might not be strong enough to register in the audible range because of that null zone. Too high a threshold produces the same effect for the opposite reason. Small targets have to overcome the loud threshold level before they can be heard above it, so they can be missed in that case too.

All I can say is wow. I use a low threshold on my 800 (site dependent). On an old ball field here with sandy soil I’ve pulled barbers 12”-13” with my machine dialed in and wet soil (pics to prove it). The concept is great but does anyone really want to dig those kind of holes? I understand the reward though. But as an old guy I don’t have too many 18.5” hole in me.

Sadly I was thinking the same thing. Unless I bring a fence post digger and a buddy. Then I bet the park service will want me to stop. Love the technology though. Makes me think of tube amplifiers you can buy today to have a truly living experience in audio. Macintosh amps come to mind. Perhaps this is the detectors tube equivalent except without the tubes.

Impressive demonstration! I too would wonder how well it would work in a suburban/urban area with all the trash and the possibility to dig up peoples pipes and gas lines! However it might be great in the farm fields and open country. The beach, who knows, but the huge coil would impress/terrify the sun bathers! I think they used this on Oak Island in one episode.

I'm headed to Germany to visit friends and relatives and not too far from the place I'm staying is a shop that sells Nexus. If you want to see one up close and personal you need to make an appointment. When I get to Germany and get settled in I plan on seeing first hand what this machine is all about. I travel quite a bit and one of my favorite places in the states is Iowa and the plain states, searching abandoned towns that are now cornfields. Coins and such sink deep into the well rotted buffalo poo and my CTX3030 maxed out is hitting silver dimes at 13" but I know there are coins much deeper. I think this Nexus detector will fit in nicely with my stable of Minelabs and XPs. Peace to all and happy hunting.

Interestingly enough, I have been thinking lately about what I could do to extend the depth of the XP Deus 2 passed what anyone could possibly expect the XP detector would be capable of, anywhere, but here, on the beaches of South Florida.
The XP Deus 2 is reported to pull a nickel at 14 inches, and I have certainly got deep nickels with that detector. To my point, there are pulse induction detectors out there, for example, the Garrett ATX, and similar that might make excellent candidates for such adventures.
I believe, there is no reason you cannot extend your depth to 2 ft or more by first detecting the area with the XP Deus 2, and clearing it of targets within its range. Once done, you could easily go back to that same location, we'll say a 20 ft² box, and rescan it with the pulse induction detector with a coil no larger than that of the ATX's larger, 15x20 in. coil, and likely with the smaller, standard coil. Any signals that you pick up could be marked and then you can start uncovering them until you might be able to make heads or tails of them with the XP Deus 2, ideally with the nine-inch coil, at a range that will allow for target identification either by VDI number, sound, the XP screen or just pulling up the target. That would be the plan. Note, that this works best with two people. Such a plan as this results in the least amount of digging, and sanity-saving.
Early in my days of metal detecting, I fell victim to the giant coil syndrome not really understanding that I was going to be digging asteroid-sized craters in search of a quarter; If you don't think this is maddening, you should try using ONLY this detector for an afternoon in the hot sun of South Florida at 100° F, and then reassess as I did it with a Minelab SD2100. My best depth was 2, AA batteries at about 30 inches. Please note, if you do this, do not forget to get inside the hole and take a photograph for your friends. Everyone should have a good laugh.

I have detected 37 yrs and absolutely I use my threshold. I've walked behind guys he didn't and found very deep targets.

Gold detectors absolutely use threshold and are some of the deepest detectors around. Threshold is very useful and even better through headphones for those very deepest of targets

Yes! Just ordered it!
For starters, if you want to gain more depth, scrub the ground with your coil. Swinging 2” over the ground cost you 2” under the ground. Don't ring the bell when swinging your coil. It's not intended to be swung vertically, with the end of each sweep being 6-8” off of the ground on the right and the left. It's imperative to scrub the ground horizontally at all times, side to side without lifting your coil from the ground.
Nexus machines are designed to swing the coil a couple of inches above the surface, this is how they operate, it eliminates ground noise, these machines have no digital components, you ground balance manually, set the threshold correctly and keep the coil height consistent with a steady swing speed, doing it this way allows the machine to react to only metal objects in the ground and not get effected by ground noise, Nexus doesn't operate like any other machine out there

I can remember when the nexus had a wooden lower shaft they go deep I always wanted one but never pulled the trigger also I was always curious about the double butterfly coil back in the early 2000s I almost purchased one
Yes! I looked at their history! THey have been around. I had no clue about a wooden coil!

When hunting for gold nuggets, I do use my threshold. I turn it on so you can hear the faintest of sound change, because it could be a tiny picker.

I have a Whites UL-2 and yes, those analog machines are great for depth. I use AT Pros and a Max to swing over sites using different coils. But once I don't have any signals I'll grab the "beast" and swing over it once more. I've had plenty of 20" holes on target's the Garrett's didn't hear. The name comes from the six C cell batteries it takes and the all metal construction. It's not light. But I swear by it for the depth it has. And that's on it's stock 10" coil. I can't imagine what it would do with a monster coil like those.
I met him in 2005 and bought 1 of his earliest machines , I didn't get on with it so sold it. I think he went back to Bulgaria a few years later .
The look and depth of the Nexus machines reminds me of some of the Tesoro (RIP) detector. I have a Vaquero and that machine can punch deep, especially if you use the super tune hack.

Nexus is a good detector pulse induction is taw power and digging roman coins at 18-24 inches. The coil suze3gives it the extra depth. There are lots of videos.....would be nice to see minelab develop a 20" coil...lighter of course. The difference between the 11" and the 15" is about 3-4 inches in rctra depth, People claim poor pinpointing and seperation....not everywhere is New York and trash ridden...I've never had an issue with the 15" coil..
use of threshold: Yes specifically when i'm beach hunting with my Minelab Sov GT. Using the threshold and max gain finds me extremely deep targets using all metal, no disc.

Yes I do use threshold on my CTX 3030 which is still relevant no matter what anybody says might not be as quick on the recovery speed or real fantastic in heavy iron but it's a deep detecting machine like any machine you have to put the hours in to understand it correctly and be able to adjust it to get the results that you're looking for and for the conditions that you are in. And on the cleaner beaches we have here in the Carolinas it's a beast 😁 The D2 I have not tried out using a threshold yet. I mainly have used it on the beach and in some heavy iron areas in iron threshold is not necessary thought about trying to use it on the beach though because it can be useful there but the D2 so deep already just haven't went there 👍🦀
That is one insane detector! Finding a coin that deep makes me wonder how it would go finding large gold nuggets down under lol.

I used threshold effectively with my old Whites machines, not with the Equinox600
I think its easier with a dial. Navigating even the equinox can be a struggle. Deus 2....there is a definite learning curve!!!!

Youre not kidding! You have to be in great shape to go that deep!
Have a look at the golden mask metal detectors, deep hunter VLF and Pi.
Very curious about them. All of these detectors I buy myself so I have to save but they are definitely on my radar.
This is so interesting. Wow that coils is scary big but it make sense .a person is gona need alot of will power to dig like that all day .i was digging at our beach 3 weeks ago with simplex and it made a small zing noice over a spot and went for it and got to huge water pipe system and it was deeeeep .i felt imbarresed but the same time proud of the simplex going that deep .just sucks in the wet because it gives fals 20 .24 18 signels continuously
I used threshold up pretty good on my Minelab sovereign and it was deep at the beach!

Hi Merrill, I normally hit my sites with Nox 800 or D2….once I have cleared the obvious signals I bring out my Nexus Standard MK2…even with a small coil it is brutally deep…. Downside is it canes batteries so bring an extra set of rechargeables!

you got to take into account that there has been no people living there. thats why there no trash in the ground. there is a park near where i live. i took took the metal detector on the tail i walked and there was no signals along the trail. which tells me no one has lived there. its a very isolated park out in the country. i walk the trail a couple times a week and never see another human being. except for the weekend i would run into another person on the trail. that place is much more isolated than this park.

it looks like a pulse machine has it any kind of disscrim. only the whites machines have any kind of disscrim,my whites tdi pro with a 16 inch nugget finder coil would come close to that depth,certainly on wet sand if not too mineralized,would be curious to see it perform on the beach.
No these are all induction balance (VLF) detectors. I had to scour their website to learn that. I thought the same thing as you!
