"Mindless peasants brawl"
I actually chortled when I first read this line in Meyer. He sure has a couple moments of sass in his manual...
2:22 _and lots of fun were had_
I am planning a video game which is currently in its infancy, and I want to include the most realistic simulation of fencing possible. It's mind numbingly challenging trying to map the nuance of the human body to a PS4 controller, but this series is the largest wellspring of clearly presented knowledge I've seen so far, and it's certainly helping. Keep up the fantastic work please!
"Mindless peasant brawl".
Now I know how to call LARP fencing style.
I have a Larper at my club, i kind of have to agree.
look at the olympic fencers, that is next level flailing.
Loved the mindless peasants' brawl near the end.
Well related to Matt Easton's recent videos on double hits. Nicely done!
This is an excellent video series because it combines practical with theory... Control of the center line, the point and their blade are all bound by two keys... Distance (measure) and timing. These two keys open the doors Taking or Breaking their initiative. What was important to consider here is how footwork and timing were essential.
love your sense of humor!
Nice video again. You are making really good content on this channel. I like all your presenters and I love showcasing hema series. Oh also, Lee is funny as balls.
It's so great to see videos about single-time counterattacks, as information about this is usually very limited. It would be great if you show us more counterattack techniques, as they are bit hard to search on the internet. I feel like the only way to know more about them is to read manuals from different masters which is like treasure hunting.
In our Showcasing HEMA videos we are mainly interested in showing off the art, and educating people about what European sword-fighting, rather than teaching people how to do anything. Especially for a topic like this it is kind of difficult to explain how the mechanics work without assuming a whole bunch of fundamental knowledge about swordfighting which most viewers won't have.
In our 'Understanding HEMA videos' we explain how to do things in more details, but rather than focus on application of a specific technique from a specific manual we tend to focus on concepts that can be applied as broadly as possible.

Do I hear music from With Fire and Sword?Excellent video as always.
Could you make a video on footwork basics and exercises?
There are a couple footwork and stance videos in their earlier video history, if you weren't aware-though they're incredibly fundamental. Though, as with most things involving fine technique, it's better to get feedback from someone more experienced than you if you can.
That ending 😂
Mindless peasant brawl looks way more fun imo.
It looks it but its not :/ there is nothing worse than fighting a 'flalier' because 50% of the time you both end up dead. At least if your doing Lichty longsword i find this to be the case. Fuck your 'before' ima gonna cut round to your opening just as you kill me. It sucks.
See how they didn't stop after the first hit? Me neither.
It's about fighting for fun not to actually win and practice technique etc.
Aurourus I think you are confusing HEMA for something else. HEMA is, to put it simply, the art of using historical weapons and teachings to reconstruct how people would have protected themselves in the time period. Nothing about it was solely about fun, since the goal of the time was to come out alive.
You're completely missing the point, i'm talking about peasant brawls not hema.
If hema is not fun then no one would do it now days since we don't use swords to fight.
Ah, i mistook your point, i sometimes forget not everybody wants to do some serious swordplay and sometimes people just like to hit things, i get that, its just not me. My mistake.
I'm guessing those sabres from the beginning aren't for sale anywhere? As they weren't in the description along with the other swords. Any idea where I could get my hands on a good waster that resembles a sabre?
No, that's just me not doing my job properly ;)
Those sabres are from Regenyei. They're pretty decent, but if you're looking for a NA retailer we also recommend SGT since they're more open to customization.

Thank you so much! I appreciate the help :)
would you all, if you have any, please comment on battle of the nations, and if a fighter, is able to use hema?
or do you feel the sport has created rules that would render hema skills useless against the tactics used in the sport?
or would these hema skills alow a fighter to better react and or engage in those same tactics?
in short, should a battle of the nations fighter train in hema?
i think the training hema provides would be beneficial, but i'm not aware of the rules in battle of nations. if you elaborated on them it would be easier for me to inform you
2:20.....wait for it......
**PEASANT FIGHT** !!!!!
Which messers did you use for this demo?
Ensifer. Thanks, forgot to put those in the description :)
I gotta ask, do you guys see some people at your club who flail about and end up getting lots of doubles? how do you train people out of this? Or how do you fence people who do that?
1) Nope, because we train people to never do that from day 1.
2) This starts with a heavy emphasis on fighting cleanly and not getting hit, instead of winning. Having roll models in the school who fight cleanly also helps. Should this fail we break out the 10 pushups per double kill rule. Should behavior continue despite repeated warnings from instructors; said instructors tend to go from striking with precision to well-protected targets to striking much firmer blows to less armored areas. In practice people start thinking about their defense very quickly.
3) How do you fence people like that? In terms of free sparring we usually tend to avoid those people, you don't learn much, and risk yourself getting injured fighting someone who has no control.
In a tournament setting you have two options. One is to fight with a limited toolbox of either relying on measure and timing to hit them when they have put themselves in a place where they can't double you, or go in and be brutal enough so they they are physically unable to double you. :)
OK let me give you an example, we bind, i wind, stab, he raises above head into Tag then cuts at my shoulder. He doesn't deflect or counter wind the instinct is to just keep on hitting. i know what i need to do, as he raises i need to cut his wrists(or turn the wind edgewords towards his strike) , but training for that bizzare situation where somebody just doesent give a shit about protecting themselves seems kind of a shame. I agree not all doubles are equal, but both derping each others chests is the single most frustrating thing, or somebody who will always cut around at the merest bind, despite it being inevitable he will get hit. I completely agree its my own fault as a 'swordsman'.
Thankyou, i might start a push ups rule. I agree with point three, the times i get nice clean kills on them are either grapples (turn or lift the elbow strike them dead, good times) or as they rush into measure cut the wrists, hands and step off line. Thanks for your helpful advice.
Trading a double hit for a 'tie' could seem like an acceptable idea when you have modern protective gear, or it's just a theoretical discussion rather than a sharp sword in your face. Given how little historical masters spent talking about how to deal with people who didn't try to defend themselves when attacked it probably wasn't something that real people did all that much.
A couple friends and I started trying to learn longsword in the absence of any proper instructors in the area, working from as many books, treatises and other materials as possible, and meeting three times a week for 2-3 hours at a time. We started with only a pair of Rawlings synthetics and no protective gear, going faster as we got more stuff and more skill. However, the absence of armor really makes you think about how you move, both to protect yourself and your partner.
We've used enough control that no injuries occurred while accumulating gear, but I can't in good conscience recommend this method. In part because safety, but also (and debatably worse) you introduce a lot of artifacts in your technique - for instance we don't target heads as much as we should because we did too much without proper headgear.
Now that we have the gear, we've started doing exercise penalties in freeplay for any hit received, by one or both fighters.
dope
How can I get a pair of those padded bats at the end. Looks like we could save tons on marriage counseling
With the rapier it's attack with opposition.
The other is simple parry riposte.
Isn't this what Meyer calls "Parrying with Advantage"?
MORE PEASANT BRAWLS. I DEMAND IT. FOR SCIENCE.
i mean isnt that a Bar fight avalble any friday night in your nearest town?
i find this disturbingly sad to find it to have not very many
