Here I think we see the dawn of the mature virtuosity of Leila Josefowicz. Such sensitivity, such pathos, that it makes your heart want to sing and weep at the same time with elation. The 2nd movement is exquisitely played! The 3rd mvt probably does need a brilliant dash to the end, for being so short. After two rather monumental movements, all the brilliance needed to balance out with those preceding giants has to be compacted into just ONE minute!!!! Superb concept - magnificently vivified!

That last segment, a run up towards the last movement at 3:48 all the way to the end, is among the best I've seen. Beautiful yet intense.

Very nice video. The sound is great and I love being able to peak back at what Leila was playing and how she was playing, when she was young. She was already showing the steely determination that I see in her today.

She is a gift from God. I saw her play a year after this and never forgot her name.

She is one of the greatest living violinists. She may have been the finest 12 year old violinist of our time as well. I have not heard any child either live or on video who comes close to her passion, tone, and execution. Wonderful!

I sit here staring at the pictures of her at 18 on the L.J. Solo CD I have from 1996 (Bartok/Paganini/Ysaÿe). I bought it when I heard her on public radio. I called to ask for the info! She is as beautiful as she is talented. And that was 13 years ago! :)
Thanks for making this performance available!

I've watched so many times this performance over the years that I've come to know by heart the comments in the end. They also add something in the legend of that video in my opinion

Trebek comments: "A piece that has not been
performed at the Hollywood Bowl in 58 years."
That performance was in 1932. The violinist
was 14 year old Ruggiero Ricci. A segment of
his performance is preserved on RUclips by
    another member.

She still performs, but I think there are several reasons why she doesn't get attention. One, she plays lots of contemporary neo-classical/romantic stuff: a taboo in professional music, and a shameful one at that. She helps new composers get seen and be taken seriously. Two, she had a child and is a single mom - she's busy. And three, some of her interpretations and on-stage facial expessions are a bit eccentric.
But this is my single favorite recording. Ever. Nothing compares to Little Leila.

I would like to clarify - some of the video from her recent recordings is just strange. This recording, like I said, is my favorite.
As for her marriage, it ended some time ago. She was married to Esa-Pekka Salonen, a composer and conductor. She's now raising their son.
Also, the United States has done just fine producing prodigies. We've had plenty - Hilary Hahn, Sarah Chang, and Joshua Bell, to name a few. Leila herself was born in Canada, but moved to the U.S. before her 3rd birthday.

    Hi,
I think you're mistaking !... she was married to Kristjan Järvi who's also a conductor, and have a son name "Lucas"
Also Chanel signed her up as a part-time catwalk model when she was 20, "They wanted someone from the classical world, and I fitted the bill". she said !.... I think she got divorce in 2005 and now lives in a Upper West side apartment in New York, she now works on contemporary compositions where she will play electric violin.

The latter Colin, I could care less. But - very unfortunately your first two remarks are quite correct. And I know that more talents, great talents are moving same direction.
Leila is a very big talent that cannot be destroyed unless by unfortunate circimstances.
(I thought she was married to a Finnish conductor?)
The US is not alway good (talent) breeding ground.

Some people say that Menuhin was an angel, born on Earth. If that's true, then Leila will tell him, 'Yehudi, come on, don't take it that seriously. There is another angel that was born!'

It's too bad that the very best rendition of this piece that I have ever heard was performed by a 12 year old girl.
