- The is the second of a two part series of silent movies about how cars worked in the 1920s. This episode explains how the engine works and uses hammer and canons to explain how the pistons move.
We've stabilized and remastered this video, added a soundtrack and generally made it more watchable. The original video is in the public domain and we retrieved it from the internet archive.

Perfect....That's what I could say
There is no such thing as an explosion inside the cylinder to push the piston down. It's not an explosion. It's fuel and air mixture igniting and burning. It doesn't explode it just ignites and burns. It is a tightly controlled burn within a sealed confined cylinder. As it ignites the hot air expands and as a result it pushes the piston down.
