    I reviewed this top rope technique for my belay test and was told by my gym that it was unsafe. Your brake hand should never move up the rope unless your left hand is holding the brake line, as well.

      This applies for toprope-belaying, when you start with leadclimbing "safe" takes a different meaning ;), and when you know what you're doing this way is plenty safe.

      Europeans have different stands for belay methods. PBUS is expected at most gyms

      i agree. its best to minimise risks and use your non-dominant hand to secure the rope

      Guys this is a technique that is approved by all major organisations in Europe, DAV etc. and it's absolutely safe.
