Very nice looking. Get a Miata NB. They are better. They don’t have a speedo cable either. They have a sending unit. I have a 99 and I love it. I also get looks and compliments on it...
Its a nearly 20 year old car... I don't think ANY car that's driven regularly, won't have some mechanical issues or parts failing at that point. Had you had an American made car of equal age, I assure you it would have MORE issues.
1. the cable broke after 20 odd years, so that is pretty strong if you ask me 2. just pull the damn speaker cover off or just superglue it back on.... no big deal 3. about the gas tank, sacrifice some trunk space and get a secondary tank 4. why is cleaning your car a bad point, cleaning cars is super fun i think you just love the thing so much that you had to find some stupid nit picky things just to get us a video :) love the video but damn, these 'bad' points are just what you cab expect from a 20 odd year old car (has it blown up yet? no? then its reliable, a cable breaking does not make it unreliable)
hmm my miata trunk doesnt do that, odd. You should install a hood strut on yours if you can't figure it out. The blind spots are fucking terrible with the top up. I really need to buy some blind spot mirrors
Glad to hear you're enjoying the MX5! Now that I own mine for about two months, I can only agree about it's reliability. What I had to replace/fix in these two months of ownership: - replace slave clutch cylinder ( suddenly no clutch anymore ) + master clutch cylinder ( did it together with the slave. - replace coolant temperature sensor ( high idle when warm and running too rich ) - replace shift boot ( was completely worn ) - clear the drain holes ( I can recommend this to everyone ) But all in all, it's a fun car to work on with relatively cheap parts and lot's of information available, so I'm not complaining :)
Last year, I bought a '94 Miata NA and I love it. She had only 23K actual miles on it and was driven little but yearly per Carfax. I'm retired, so I have lots of time to drive it on nice days and 'baby' the heck out of it. Everything is like new and has been nothing but fun to drive. It's Laguna Blue, no rust anywhere, with only the smallest and few light scratches, there to keep me humble for sure. I get lots of looks and I'm kinda used to that now. She is the model R, no p steering or air but dont miss it, 5speed runs great and have no desire to turbo it or do the v8 thing, I really love it just as it is. I put a real roll bar on it, a 'Hard Dog' brand , perfect fit and highly recommended. These Sport Cars are fun to talk about with those who can appreciate the car, and has been nothing but smiles for me and my wife. I had thought about a small BMW or 'vette, but on winding roads, the car is hard to beat as far as fun, She can red line @7K in every gear, and you can't do that with a 400hp turbine under you bonnet and not end up in a bad way. lol. Zoom Zoom
please please please, loose the style bar and get a proper bolt-in roll bar. it might save your life one day and can be had for under $300. they look cooler, turn more heads, and they have the added benefit of making the car more ridged, which helps handling.
Dude I own a 2001 MX-5 and I love love love it. Just like you I never got compliments for my Lexus Es300. But with this car top down I pull up to a nice restaurant in NYC I get plenty compliments. So happy with it! Glad you having fun with your miata.
allll of these problems have nothing to do with miatas… these are all issues that arise from improper maintenance on ANY car, especially when the owner doesn't know how to work on a car… title should be changed to "why I'm better as a cameraman than a mechanic"
Okay, to get rid of the musky smell, turn on the AC, turn the controls to recirculate, and spray some smell-good in the passenger foot well directed at the center console. That is the recirculating intake. That will kill some, if not all of the smell depending on what you use. Other good cleaning tips can be had on RUclips by looking for the recent three part series from Detail Garage Chemical Guys. That tutorial is amazing, and if your girlfriend likes the car now, just wait till you use a few of their tricks on the MX-5 before a date night! I'd skip the "pressure wash the engine bay" part though. That took balls...
Nice! I had a black NA a few months ago and shared your pain with how dirty it gets, actually I even shared your speaker grill pain! On my third NA now and getting ready to take one through a Michigan winter for the first time. Great videos, keep it up!
It always makes me happy to see someone who really enjoys their car. Though I think you should give the car a break about the broken Speedo cable, after all it is a 20 year old sports car. I have wanted a Miata since first reading about them in car and driver. They had just came out and I was sitting in 7th grade math class, to this day I have no clue what the math lesson was that day but the image of that Miata on the page will forever have place in my mind. I'm on the hunt for a second generation NB miata and hope to find one in as good shape as yours and I hope you get to enjoy your Miata for many years to come.
An upgrade worth doing is fitting some (NOT RICE) lowering springs. Here in the UK, you can pick up a set of Tein s teck springs with a 40mm ish drop for around £110. They give you more of a feel of what the wheels are doing, plus, you have a much better centre of gravity than the factory set up for such a low price. As you said, the roads are bad in Michigan, and they are terrible here too, but they don't cause the car to bottom out any more than the factory springs.
Thanks for these videos! I'm waiting till I have enough cash to buy the new ND. I seriously can't wait for my first miata, my first manual car, and my first convertible!
I've had my 90' 1.6 for almost 8 months now. Changed the exhaust like 12 times. Threw on some Megan Racing lowering springs. re-directed the air filter to the front of the car outside of the bay. advanced the cam 12 degrees (lots of pop pop sounds now, hahah.) Found a set of wheels I like, stretched some 175's around em too. So far she's still kickin ass at 216k miles. Even though it's a 1.6, the dual cam and vvt combined with the gutted interior and sub 2k lb weight, pshhh, I've eaten 5.0 mustangs so many times I forgot how to count. My only recommendation is to keep up with maintenance. Timing belts, water pumps, oil obviously, and bushings of all sorts.
I bought my 1996 for 1800 with 82000 miles and have had it for like 14 months. no issues yet. clutch is starting to go out though, its the original. since I have had it, I have put about 800 dollars into of upgrades and 300 on maintenance since I have it. like oil, brakes, tires, etc.
Change the style bar to a proper structural roll bar. Yes, it stiffens the body and makes it corner better, but the most important reason is SAFETY! Heaven forbid you get into a rollover, but neither the soft top nor some fiberglass shell are going to save you. They do make more stylish bars for those who don't want the "track day" aesthetic and, depending their construction, you can still use your tops.
Hard top, post haste! Michigan winters are BRUTAL on soft tops. Just got my wife a 97 Miata and since we live in Florida a hard top isn't a priority, but the roads are made of crushed coral and sea shell so a BRA is the first thing on my list. BTW, our Miata has speakers in the seat head rests. Check yours out it might also, but just be disconnected, having speakers in the doors of a convertible sucks.
You probably need new shocks for the trunk. Mine stays up all day, wherever I park, but I don't have that wing on the trunk, which makes it just heavier. With no modification to the shocks that keep it up, you will get that pill of annoyance every time. There are aftermarket 40% stronger shocks, to keep it up, even with the wing + trunk boot added. Just look it up, they are not that pricy.
Keep the roll bar, could save your life one day if you roll the n/a. As for upgrades....braided break lines, bigger radiator, fly and clutch plate to add little extra zip into your daily.
I own a 1989 miata (built in 89, sold in 90. for those of you who try and call BS). I've had the car for a year so far, been t-boned by a 90's surburban. had the full body refinished, autocrossed the car about once or twice a month for the last 5 months, I had to replace the fuel pump when i bought it becasue that's just how i bought it. for a car that gets raced, driven daily, has eveything original including the suspension (yeah i have stock shocks and struts) and nothing has ever broken on it in that time. dude it depends on maintenance. Oh and mines red so it always looks clean...but i feel your pain since i have mat black rims.
Check out Flyin Miata's exhaust setup. Muffler deletes don't sound near as good in person, and they really are loud as hell. That's not from personal experience driving, but seeing plenty with muffler deletes at local car shows. Personally, I'll be in the market for an NB next spring!
2 things: 1: i subscribed, because I like your video's and I own an 1991 mx-5 myself. 2: One cheap (little rice :\) upgrade, a cold air intake, it changes the sound quite alot :)
Damnn, this is my dreamcar for when i get my license.. Lol didn't expect that people would give compliments, cause the most people don't even know what kind off car it is.
You might be able to move the trunk spring to the perches for the factory spoiler to create extra tension if it isn't already there. This can be a really knuckle-busting job, and not as good as adding a damper, but I figure you'd at least like to know.
I JUST got my 94 NA Miata about a week ago lol. And so far.....I LOVE IT!!!! It's so nice to be able to let the top down on a nice day. And it is so fun to drive! It's not fast by any means, but it handles! ....and mine is lowered on a $500 coilover suspension :) Only thing I don't like about it is.....the rattling lol. Mine rattles so bad. lol. But overall....great car!!!! :)
Very Good. You are the only review that has talked about how many times a week they fill up. I was wondering about the Eleven gallon tank. Thank you now my research is complete. Look at lease u are the seventh owner, don't be so down on the car. At lease u havea car. All the best Shaun of NYC
i want a miata really bad but i just bought a car right before i was familiar with them, and i dont know how to drive manual. i think it defeats the purpose of a miata if you get an automatic one. nice car and i hope you can find all of the parts youre looking for!
I'd lose the rollbar just because it's not original, and takes away from the "lines" of the Miata when the top is down.... don't get tan seats, otherwise they'll clash with the door panels and the rest of the black features of the interior, the triple black looks best in my opinion, but I would change them to leather and maybe have cloth covers for those cold Michigan winters (I live on the lake in Indiana and know how cold leather can be in the winter)....it really is a beautiful, fun car.... definitely get some bliztac (sp) tires for the winter, you'll need them for traction with the weight of the car... I've got my eye on an 06 and can't wait to call it mine...have fun, and ZOOM ZOOM buddy!
nice review. i feel pretty cool in my miata. i scored some tan leather nb2 seats for 50 bucks but i intend to reupholster them in black cloth with tartan plaid. I have a 96 montego blue. I love my miata.
$4000 and the ac was broken? Bruh. You can find Miatas clean here for $2500-3000 all day. I picked up a 99 with 144k at auction for $900. Been reliable as a daily for 3 months now and I average 25mpg. It's just my secondary car, but I daily it since its too much fun
Good video. Nice car. I have a 99. After your complaints, I feel real lucky with mine. It's almost perfect, except it could use a new top and rims need repainting. The headlight plastic covers are terrible too. Other than that, it runs so good. Ya, I get over-inflated ego too, lol. Just recently stopped at a store and a lady said "what a nice sporty car". I must of looked like an idiot because I couldn't say anything, because I was grinning from ear to ear. With the top down, it's pure joy...
My 1995 miata had a trunk release in the center console compartment. Does the 97 not? That would be a stupid omission if they removed it. Although, maybe it was a security thing because while my center compartment (with the latch) locked, I imagine it would be pretty easy to just rip open. I think I remember my trunk not staying open either, but only with strong winds or large inclines.
It's not the weight of the style bar that people don't like. It's the fact it's a "style bar" and not a real functional roll bar. It's like having a fake hood scoop. Regardless, I enjoy your videos, keep it up! I live just south of you & after watching your videos and a few other mx-5 owner's videos I've decided I'm getting one relatively soon. & I want to take a trip up to Michigan & kayak before it snows. Unless it already has lol, then I'll do it next Spring/Summer.

I like that you teach how to drive manual :) That's a good thing. And also I'm glad to see updates. I hope that there will be some more. Great video as always. You did a great job.
Considering how badly miatas rust (like most mazdas) I probably wouldn't drive it in the winter. Here in Quebec it really shows which miatas are stored in the winter vs the ones which have been driven.
About the smell from your aircondition. Thats not gonna go away by itself. The smell is probably from mold in the system, but this is happening with all cars with aircondition. I know that there is some chemicals that will clean you aircondtion with spraying it in the vents. you also have to change your filter (if u have it in your car). I don't know the names of what chemicals you can use, because im not from america :P but this should help you with the problem. Sorry for the bad typings. English is not my nr.1 language :D
Sounds like the exhaust you have is aftermarket. Mine is very quite I mean you cannot hear it. Only engine noise from my car which is still kinda cool.
Nobody compliments my Fiero... :( Which I got after my Miata exploded. It is just a sportier, more powerful Miata... but, I still yearn for another Miata.
I love your miata videos and I have a 1990. Please post a video if you find out why the AC can smell weird sometimes. I have the same problem. Also what kind of radio do you have?
Don't get me wrong. I love my leather seat's, classy. That said. Their are work, have to be kept soft. I live in Florida, heat and the sun will take a toll on them quickly if not taken care of. I'm sure that is not a big a factor in the northeast. I am from Ma. Moved here year's ago. I do remember getting into my car in the dead of winter when it was really cold, hated them. But when they warmed they, felt great. This is the price you pay for how great they feel when the temperature is right.
since I got my miata I haven't had any problems so when EVERYONE else says miatas are reliable it probably means they are (they are) so just because you bought a shit miata and one things broke it doesn't mean miatas are unreliable if nobody else has much problems, I've had it a year now and I haven't had one problem, I haven't even done work on it yet, I'm buying a turbo kit in 2 weeks
Me being a Miata you can take my word for saying you should so get a turbo! Once one of our kind are fitted with that were amazing. Plus are God (Mazda) Made us to have a turbo added easily.
I think your trunk lid comes down because you have a spoiler/style bar on it, weighing it down. I now have aNA MX-5/Miata/Eunos with spoiler on the trunk lid and it falls on my head too :( My previous NA didn't have one and the trunk lid stayed up perfectly.
Speedo cable broke on 20 year old car... waaahhhhhhh! I nearly burned my hand ... ROFL. I have a 98' CL 3.0 with 268k miles on it... everything is worn out lol.
"whoever tells you that 90s Japanese cars are super reliable are wrong" Believe it or not no 18 year old car is going to be perfect. For a car that has been around for probably as long as you have, a couple of minor things like that are to be expected. With regular maintenance that car should still be able to go a couple hundred thousand miles before kicking the bucket, assuming it isn't thrashed on.
Have you found a website for Miata parts yet? If so would you share it with me please. I know there is a lot of aftermarket stuff out there for these cars but I would like to find someone who carries original equipment to
a little late here, but your trunk shutting by itself? it shouldn't be doing that, mine stays up fine & is older than yours. it could be the spoiler weighing it down, not sure if that's a factory placement or not, but if it isn't, that'd be your trunk problem right there. daily-driver mine too now, at least a 100 miles/day
Your speedo cable breaks which means old Japanese cars aren't reliable......
ikr
No to mention it was probably the original cable from the 90s. Got dam cable wouldn't last another 27 years.
90's Japanese cars aren't reliable I had to change the oil in just 3k miles.
But in all seriousness my mom's 92 accord just died at 200k miles.RIP
Dylan Pudiak, I know right...
Very nice looking. Get a Miata NB. They are better.
They don’t have a speedo cable either. They have a sending unit. I have a 99 and
I love it. I also get looks and compliments on it...
Its a nearly 20 year old car... I don't think ANY car that's driven regularly, won't have some mechanical issues or parts failing at that point. Had you had an American made car of equal age, I assure you it would have MORE issues.
He's a whiner.
1. the cable broke after 20 odd years, so that is pretty strong if you ask me
2. just pull the damn speaker cover off or just superglue it back on.... no big deal
3. about the gas tank, sacrifice some trunk space and get a secondary tank
4. why is cleaning your car a bad point, cleaning cars is super fun
i think you just love the thing so much that you had to find some stupid nit picky things just to get us a video :) love the video but damn, these 'bad' points are just what you cab expect from a 20 odd year old car (has it blown up yet? no? then its reliable, a cable breaking does not make it unreliable)
Ford Flex- Echoboost
Mazda Miata- Ego boost
I think I know the one we all want
hmm my miata trunk doesnt do that, odd. You should install a hood strut on yours if you can't figure it out. The blind spots are fucking terrible with the top up. I really need to buy some blind spot mirrors
I want a miata so bad!!!
Tommy Miata, Did you get one?...
it's an old car, of course some things are going to break, Japanese reliability doesn't have anything to do with it
Many Japanese cars are reliable
For the boot lid, or trunk lid problem, you should be able to get a hydraulic lift kit for it for about $20-30!
Glad to hear you're enjoying the MX5! Now that I own mine for about two months, I can only agree about it's reliability.
What I had to replace/fix in these two months of ownership:
- replace slave clutch cylinder ( suddenly no clutch anymore ) + master clutch cylinder ( did it together with the slave.

- replace shift boot ( was completely worn )
- clear the drain holes ( I can recommend this to everyone )
But all in all, it's a fun car to work on with relatively cheap parts and lot's of information available, so I'm not complaining :)
charles vandeplassche Yes, a looot of road noise comes through the shift boot.
+charles vandeplassche ha! clutch slave was the first thing I had to do after I purchased my Miata as well
Last year, I bought a '94 Miata NA and I love it. She had only 23K actual miles on it and was driven little but yearly per Carfax. i was about to say that
especially because the style bar might fold into the passenger compartment in the case of a rollover!
Where can you find a roll bar for under $300?
Bullshit. The style bar is fine. I have the same one. Put whatever bar you want on yours...
Dude I own a 2001 MX-5 and I love love love it. Just like you I never got compliments for my Lexus Es300. But with this car top down I pull up to a nice restaurant in NYC I get plenty compliments. So happy with it! Glad you having fun with your miata.

Have a 97 low miles love it. Cannot say any thing bad about my mx-5 not the fastest but still gets up and go......
Thanks for these videos! I'm waiting till I have enough cash to buy the new ND. I seriously can't wait for my first miata, my first manual car, and my first convertible!

I just got a stanced miata yesterday i drove it from ny to nj in the highway people were takin pictures and videos i love my miata
Congrats to you and glad to hear you're happy and appreciating the car.
I bought my 1996 for 1800 with 82000 miles and have had it for like 14 months. no issues yet. clutch is starting to go out though, its the original. since I have had it, I have put about 800 dollars into of upgrades and 300 on maintenance since I have it. like oil, brakes, tires, etc.

you need to put a real exhaust under that thing. Nothing expensive, but the rattle that stock system puts out when you rev it just makes me shiver
KG works Miata instrument cluster they make a bunch of different styles but they're all cool and completely plug and play.
Love your videos!
I myself am planning on buying a Miata and you definitely helped me out a lot . Thank you so much sir!
Keep the roll bar, could save your life one day if you roll the n/a.

don't complain about a 7 owner car... mines a 1991 with 130k original miles and never had a problem, ac is still cold...
nice review. i feel pretty cool in my miata. i scored some tan leather nb2 seats for 50 bucks but i intend to reupholster them in black cloth with tartan plaid. I have a 96 montego blue. I love my miata.
I live in MI too, thinking of getting a miata as a daily, I drive a mk4 jetta gli right now
$4000 and the ac was broken? Bruh. You can find Miatas clean here for $2500-3000 all day. I picked up a 99 with 144k at auction for $900. Been reliable as a daily for 3 months now and I average 25mpg. It's just my secondary car, but I daily it since its too much fun
where dude
Good video.
Marcel Vološin Thank you! I will definitely keep doing updates, so stay tuned for those!
The funky ac smell could be as simple as an air filter and there's companies that clean out you ac system and lines !
Or blower motor.
Thanks for review. My next car will be Miata! I live in Northwood IV~!
Awesome video as always. Hoping to drive my '97 as well this spring! Btw, where did you get your go-kart? Looks immensely fun
Considering how badly miatas rust (like most mazdas) I probably wouldn't drive it in the winter. Here in Quebec it really shows which miatas are stored in the winter vs the ones which have been driven.
Awesome miata and video! Miata will always treat you well 😊
About the smell from your aircondition.
HOLY SHIT! "UHG MY SPEAKER COVER IS COMING OFF AND I ABSOLUTLY HATE THIS CAR!! OMG I CANT ROLL DOWN MY WINDOW BECAUSE OF IT!!!!"
Chromed air vent rings look pretty good
Want to trade interiors? Got me tan leather in my 94, but the seats are a bit cracked.
Nice video man! You've made me want to get one even more now!
Hey , I'am a college kid just like you and I was looking into buying a Miata, do you think its worth it ?& as my first car to ?
DO IT
DO IT x2
shadowcrave58
Do it
100% worth it! At least for me. It's probably the cheapest, most painless way to own a sports car in college.
YESTERDAY YOU SAID TOMMORROW
u had it 3 months and I ain't realised that the trunk needs new springs!!
The problem with you trunk lid not staying open is the weight of your spoiler .
since I got my miata I haven't had any problems so when EVERYONE else says miatas are reliable it probably means they are (they are) so just because you bought a shit miata and one things broke it doesn't mean miatas are unreliable if nobody else has much problems, I've had it a year now and I haven't had one problem, I haven't even done work on it yet, I'm buying a turbo kit in 2 weeks
I loved owning my Miata
my trunk had no problem, before i install also a wing. Now the extra weight makes it hit my head also.....
Wait, he spent 70-80 bucks on a cable... WHAT?
Speedo cable broke so it must be unreliable lol
Me being a Miata you can take my word for saying you should so get a turbo! Once one of our kind are fitted with that were amazing. Plus are God (Mazda) Made us to have a turbo added easily.
I think your trunk lid comes down because you have a spoiler/style bar on it, weighing it down. I now have aNA MX-5/Miata/Eunos with spoiler on the trunk lid and it falls on my head too :( My previous NA didn't have one and the trunk lid stayed up perfectly.
Leatherette seat covers are a better value. They look upholstered and are UV protected.
replace the stylebar with a white (spraypainted) rollcage or a black one
Speedo cable broke on 20 year old car... waaahhhhhhh! I nearly burned my hand ... ROFL. I have a 98' CL 3.0 with 268k miles on it... everything is worn out lol.
Get it professionally washed or detailed
Subscribed for more miata updates!
Would be sweet to see some videos of you working on it ;)
David Texugo Good suggestion, thanks!
why did you replace the AC in a convertible? Its a convertible
How is it in snow?! I live in Michigan and sometimes winters can be hell
This makes me excited to get one in July
Did you buy one?
+John Gotti 2 more days
do you like it?
mw2dude2010 oh i love it man!
you really got it ?lolol
The trunk is good on mine so I'd think it's a fatigued spring
One thing thats true .. you get alot of compliments
lol I wash my miata once a week and wax it every 3 washes if it needs it. But im a detailer so what do you expect
Does anyone know a reliable website that I can buy a 1995 Miata Front Bumper???
Have you found a website for Miata parts yet? If so would you share it with me please. I know there is a lot of aftermarket stuff out there for these cars but I would like to find someone who carries original equipment to
Rock Auto
Im planning on getting one myself and im curious. How is it in the cold/snow?
a little late here, but your trunk shutting by itself? it shouldn't be doing that, mine stays up fine & is older than yours. it could be the spoiler weighing it down, not sure if that's a factory placement or not, but if it isn't, that'd be your trunk problem right there. daily-driver mine too now, at least a 100 miles/day
....also, mine has a trunk release in the center console, no key required. maybe the 97 didn't have this feature?
Damn you took it to the wash 2 times a month, I like to clean my car every week sometimes twice a week.
Hows the 500 year flood doing ?
You should put a front lip on it
How does the miata do in the winter??
Also get rid of the style bar,it’s literally a mouse trap
um there should be a switch in ur center console for the trunk
it's rediculous how expensive those things are in the US in the Netherlands I can buy one for about 1500 to 2500 euros
definitley headers and exhaust
definitley wanna see you turbo that bitch too omg that would be nuts
My 95 M has 237,000 miles and still running great
Never sell your car
Did you ever FIX that trunk lid?
