    The fact that you fabbed all this stuff on your daily driver, one part at a time, without downtime, is easily the most impressive part of this project.

Kudos bro! Keep the videos coming! Also you should do a few videos on installing all the different gauges and how to install them into the eyeball vent.

    Here's a better way that I found.
    Get a 1.8 engine.
    Turbo it.
    Nailed it.

      @TheCarPassionChannel  9 лет назад +46

      +Eggly Bagelface Not everyone has the capacity, provisions, or even a good reason to do a 1.8L swap. My 1.6L produces a better torque curve than 95% of the stock internal 1.8L turbos on the road, it's more than just the engine itself that produces a good setup.

      +TheCarPassionChannel But if the same setup was made on the 1.8, it will be have better torque curve than your 1.6 Turbo'd Miata?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  9 лет назад +26

      Parodian Not saying the 1.8 isn't superior. It is. I'm just saying people that thing 1.6 turbo is a bad route, and 1.8 turbo is the only way... I just don't agree with them.

    Great video! Walks through the basic process pretty darn well. I found the interfooler pretty hilarious, but totally understood if it's a daily driver. It took me about 6 days to turbo my Miata (including fabricating the manifold/downpipe, and only working limited hours on it). One thing to note, the two ports you used for vacuum/boost reference right by the throttle body aren't the cleanest signal. The best place to reference is to tee off of the fuel pressure regulator line for Megasquirt and the boost gauge.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  9 лет назад +1

      +Adam Watson I use the throttle body port for the boost gauge, and have tee'd off the FPR for MS. I do want to try to tee off the FPR for the boost gauge though as the readings aren't always consistent with MS.

      Only issue being that on this car there is a crossmember directly under the oil pan, so removing the oil pan is an engine-out job. Hence the "shortcuts" with greasing the drill and using tape to stop it going in too deep.

    Fell Rider I can't reply to your comment so hopefully you get the tag. At idle, if you have a 1.6L running the stock fuel configuration ("batch injection") you want to be in the mid 13's for a stable idle. If you have a 1.8L or a 1.6L with sequential injection you can shoot for 15.0 or so. In boost, mid 11.s is perfect. If you're in boost but AFR's are fluctuating, it could be a variety of things. What fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator do you have? What ECU?

    Dude, excellent video. The only thing I'd say you left out was upgrading the oil system to meet the demands of high horsepower and a turbo. I would think you want at least a pan with one additional quart of oil a higher pressure oil pump (additional 15-20 psi) and an oil cooler. I personally would put a small functional scoop in the hood that send cool air directly onto the turbo body(80's 300ZX style) Thanks for the video man.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  9 лет назад

      +hotrodsather Thanks! I'd ahve to say though after 29,000 miles near the known limit of the stock internals, and tracking/autocrossing every 1-2 months as well as daily driving, I'd say oil system upgrades are optional. Once you get up to the 275+whp level it's time to start thinking about an oil pump, but that's primarily because the Miata engine's lack of balance likes to crack the stock gears; the upgraded pumps use billet gears. A side effect of those pumps is higher oil pressure though.

    Installing the GT2554R FM kit this weekend with 3in exhaust. It will be a little overkill but It should be a ton of fun.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  7 лет назад

      Cullen Duncan It won't be overkill. That 2554R will spool like a banshee hooked up to a 3" exhaust. You should easily see 10psi by 3000RPM even on a 1.6.

      Maybe in a few weeks I can post up a video when it's fully tuned. I had the old school greddy turbo kit on the car before so I can't wait to see the differences.

    @Jakub Doulan is that why 99% of turbo builds and stock turbo cars have blow off or recirc valves? As soon as you close the throttle plate all that pressure between the compressor and the throttle body has to go somewhere. if it can't escape though a blow off or recirc, it will try to force its way back though the compressor. At very low boost it's not as big of a deal but the more pressure you have in the system, the more damage it can do to the turbo.

    • @powermos
      @powermos 9 лет назад

      +TheCarPassionChannel But you said that your blow off valve is hooked after the throttle body. Why? Does it operate on vacuum or pressure? Because if it opens with pressure it makes sense to have it's control line before the throttle body.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  9 лет назад

      Wolfshark Blow off valves open using vacuum, not pressure. As soon as the intake manifold has lower pressure than the intercooler piping, the BOV is pulled open by that difference in pressure. It's basically a valve with intake piping on one side and manifold pressure on the other, it needs that manifold pressure signal to open.

    • @DriftNick
      @DriftNick 8 лет назад

      +TheCarPassionChannel They have bypass valves for emission reasons, in Australia if you go to a drift or drag day most people aren't running a valve, including people pumping 30psi+ out of turbos for years without issue.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  8 лет назад

      DriftNick Are you talking about a recirculating blow off or a blow off in general?

    • @DriftNick
      @DriftNick 8 лет назад

      TheCarPassionChannel First part I'm talking about recirculating valves as that is what every factory turbo car runs (at least I don't know any that runs a blow off valve), second part I'm talking about valves in general.

      nice! for sure gonna stay tuned for that i messed up though i recently changed my clutch but i put an exxedy OE replacement clutch but i did upgrade to a 10 pound racing flywheel i only plan to boost 6 pounds hoping ill be ok but as far as tuning my city has nobody that tunes miatas TheCarPassionChannel

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  9 лет назад

      Lucious Arrington Yeah that OE Exedy probably won't be able to take much more than 6psi anyways haha. Once you learn MS you'll be able to give yourself a nice strong street tune. I gave mine a rough tune at 10psi and it was fine, only made 174whp and ran real rich up on top, at that point I was still very new to MS. With your clutch you won't really be able to maximize your power on a dyno anyways. Are you planning on using an intercooler?

    • @luciousdrea18
      @luciousdrea18 9 лет назад

      yeah thats why i plan on 6 lol hoping to at least see 130 to the wheels i dont need much i plan on going with an intercooler yeah TheCarPassionChannel

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  9 лет назад

      Lucious Arrington You'll be able to get 130whp no problem, I'd just keep turning the boost up until the clutch slips then back it down a couple psi. It would be a really good idea to port the wastegate if you only want to run 6psi though, especially if you have a free flowing exhaust. My buddy has a TD0514G (small) on his 1.6L with a 6psi wastegate actuator and it creeps all the way to 12psi by 7000RPM because the wastegate just can't flow enough to keep the boost that low.

    The NA6 1.6 is the same 1.6 from the AWD turbo Mazda 323 gtx. So yes. The 1.6 /was/ designed for a turbo. That's why there's a bung on the other side that's not used.

      +Taylor Trascher The block is the same, the internals are not. But that is the reason for the oil feed port.

    I've got a lot of research to do I'm waiting on my compensation from a car accident, I won't have all the money for the full build, probably, just the car, megasquirt, afr dial, and a few other pieces maybe just the clutch. I'm considering forging the engine but like I said research is involved I want to aim for 300bhp at the wheels but not push the engine limits and with a 1.8 mx5 I shouldn't have to change out the back end or gearbox, thanks for your videos

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  5 лет назад

      300whp will destroy a stock engine and 5-speed gearbox in short order. Yes people have done it, but on average you be bending rods before 300. 220-230whp is a pretty safe number on the stock running gear, as long as you have a 1.8L differential.

    Good video, I think you should reshoot a longer more in-depth version of this. With more examples of what you are talking about and getting a little more deeper into each topic for the guys that are really interested in this. I know they would appreciate it.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  9 лет назад

      minameise I'm planning on doing something pretty similar to that soon, it's going to be a series on how to boost your Miata as cheap as possible while staying reliable... or something like that. I'm actually going to turbocharge another Miata for the series, does that sound like something you'd be interested in?

    • @AimForTheBushes908
      @AimForTheBushes908 9 лет назад

      TheCarPassionChannel Absolutely, although when I saw all the extra labor and modification involved it was a bit discouraging due to lack of time for a project like that. And, whether or not I would want to make such extensive changes for sure, but it is nice to know that it can be done should one desire.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  9 лет назад

      minameise It is a bit time consuming to do the conversion yourself. Not only converting to turbo, but also plenty of troubleshooting afterwards.

    I think msefi has detcan compatibility. Knock monitoring is important on tuned/boosted engines

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  9 лет назад

      Bushtail Razorback Definitely. I just pretty much bolted everything on and brought it to the tuner. I wasn't going for max power and pushing it to the ragged edge so I didn't feel the need for det cans. Maybe when I build the engine and see what she can really do I'll invest some time in that.

    My friend; you have just achieved hero status. I can't be the only one with a blown miata but doesn't know how it works. My worry gauge (afr) has ADD!! At cruise/4,000 I get a steady 14.7 +/- 3 and on boost about mid-11's but it flicks all over the place. Should it be? My high idle (RX8 injectors) is about 1500rpm and the worry gauge will read about 12 - 12.4. It smells waaay rich. What sort of ballpark figures should I be getting for idle, boost and cruise? Many thanks for the vids so far. Subscribed and watching with interest...
