I've had my 2000 Miata for exactly 19 years. It's a daily driver and I assure you, it never gets old or monotonous. Due to the gearing, it's loud and high strung on interstate trips, but you take the bad with the good because of how fun it is. Doug, I love watching all of your videos. I thought that I would give you a couple thoughts on the Miata. My wife and I bought a 93 Miata new in March of 93 for $16,400. It was the first time that we could afford a third car, and we've been having fun with it ever since. The Miata came in an A, B, and C package. We got the B package, which included power mirrors, but not power windows. We still have the business card of the salesman that sold it to us (he was a great guy....never had to see the manager). Our seats are a great cloth that has held up really well since new. I agree with so many of your comments, but I have a different take on a few. The car has 116 horsepower, and while its not fast, it was really not slow for the day and the price range. The car is a traditional sports car, where lots of people can drive it at its limit...and thats really what makes it fun. You have to remember that the tires are really narrow on the car, so it isn't hard to break loose. The stance of the car is low, and my 18 year old son comments that the car is also cut low. It doesn't have high doors or framing for side impact protection, and that gives you an amazing connection to everything around you...much like the generation of british sports cars before it. A few comments on the quirks and features. The Miata came with an ashtray in the middle, but Mazda sold different accessories to substitute for the ashtray. Mine actually had a dual cupholder substitute in a box in the trunk. The fuel filler release and the trunk release are in the center console because of theft. You have to think about the fact that in this cars era we weren't too far past when people would steal gas out of your car, so it was desirable that way. The headlights go up in the fixed position because they were trying to emulate the Austin Healy Bugeye Sprite, from which a few design cues on this car are from. The dual sunvisor is a practical method to get sunvisors to fit. The compression on my car is the same as it was when I bought it new, which is hard to believe (we drive the car a lot every summer). I haven't had to replace the clutch because the engine doesn't generate enough power to wear it out. The other fun fact is that for those of us that do these things ourselves, none of the work on this car is hard. Thank you for your videos. I hope that you have as much fun making them as I do watching them.
Power numbers can vary from country to country. I don't know why. And then there's the kind of number. PS, HP, BHP. They don't mean the same. I'm just saying there's no reason to point out such small difference.
I had gas stolen out my 1990 Miata... in 2010. Sadly, we will still be in the time when some individuals will siphon your gas - until we are all driving electric.
@@greenchannelgreen Did you know the Toyota pickup trucks from the late 80's and early 90's actually had locking gas tank doors? Too bad your Miata didn't have that feature! That's it? There's one going for 13 grand here in my city. It's got 25k miles, sure, but still it's a 1990 base model. There's another one that's 8 grand for 55k miles, and everything else is a clapped out drift missle with rust and raceland coilovers for 3500 and 180k+ miles.
When you’re in your C7 Corvette ripping corners on the tail of the dragon and a shitbox miata with 130whp suddenly appears a few feet from your back bumper and you have to use a pull off and let him pass
I did that to a lifted douche truck in my shitbox gc8 going up a mountain road. He'd floor it on every straight away but had to slow to a crawl for every corner which I would take at full speed. Was pretty fun.
Doug - I'm a big fan of you. But I owned this model Mazda Miata/Eunos/MX5 and you didn't comment on the door handles of this early model? They are a real cool 1 finger operation, so unique at the time. All chrome and everything. It was my favourite quirk of the car. The later models put a standard 'lift open' operation like all other cars. The door handles on this model were unique, bespoke and a thing of beautiful engineering...
@18:16 Good point about other drivers not seeing your Miata. Back when I drove a white NA Miata on the streets, I resorted to driving at all times with the headlights on to improve the chances of other drivers seeing me. I think it helped. Small, low cars like this need to be driven like motorcycles. Drive them as if every car or truck on the road is out to kill you.
Headlights don't work when you're already alongside and their mirror is above your roofline (even assuming the roof is up - rarely for us). I never sit alongside a 4WD or SUV if I can help it!
I don't understand the dislikes for Doug's videos. These must be the same people I stand behind in a busy checkout line that make the checker walk across the store to see why the can of air freshener rang up 5 cents more than it was marked on the shelf.
My 1994 Miata makes me giggle. And then I look down and I'm going like 32 MPH. I love it. I never expected to enjoy a Miata this much before I bought one even but it's just fantastic.
its something that you can't describe. I had my friend literally talk shit about my car for the longest time until he actually drove it, he instantly took it all back. It was fucking weird.
This is a serious problem with these cars tho😂 when I was in high school driving a 90s lincoln continental, i was backing into a parking spot that I thought was unoccupied because I couldn't see a miata in my mirrors and accidentally hit it😂 no damage to either car tho and the miata driver wasn't in his car so I just went about my day
I'm only 20, living in the uk and only been driving a year and I've bought an NB. All I can say is I freaking love it and I will find any excuse to go out in it
Bought my NC GT new in 2006. Best car I have ever owned. Easy to work on, very reliable and puts a smile on my face every time. My only negative is that the 6th gear revs at 3600 rpm at 70.
@@crashhappy7296 Welcome to the club. I remember in seeing my first Miata in 1989 in a show room. It was British racing green with a tan interior. I was 19 at the time with very little money but a lot of love for that little sports car. After coming home from a year long Army deployment overseas in 2006 I decided it was my time to buy a brand new car. I looked at a 2006 Mustang and Corvette convertible. Both were nice, and quite frankly I was extremely disappointed in the Corvette. As a kid I always wanted one but it didn't live up to what I expected from a $50K car. I test drove the 2006 MX5 and fell in love. It only had 170 HP vs the corvette's 400 and the Mustang GT's 300, but it drove better than both of the others. Needless to say I bought it. Do yourself a favor and join a Miata club. this groups of like minded people will help you if you want to modify or maintain your car if they like you.
*"You can get a hard top for when its winter and you're not going to be putting the top down."* I think I'd have to move to the Arctic circle before I'd stop going topless mate
Ive always heard good things about these cars, reliability and fun factor As a owner of a convertible and a previous owner of 2 other convertibles (not Miata's but the same applies) all i can tell anyone that wants to buy one, Miata or not, is this ....DON'T EVER buy a convertible if you dont have a place to put it... EVER, always remember this,a window is around 120 dollars installed,a convertible top? about 400 dollars just for the top, another 900 dollars to install it (most Convertibles) So......., if you live in a apartment and or you dont have a cool place to park your ride, dont buy one, do your self that favor and wait for a better time in your life when you have a nice place of your own, just some friendly advice because anytime you piss someone off (mailman, exgirlfriend, old use to be buddy, the local nutcase) that little top and a razor blade will have a meeting and you wont like it AT ALL, i should say your wallet wont like it, ha ha ha, if you can find a convertible with a hardtop thats the way to go but these tend to be very expensive. Convertibles are fun as hell but remember the things that come with owning one.
As an MX-5 Miata owner I always considered myself knowledgeable about the various generations of these cars but your video revealed so many little known features. Very cool! Thanks!
I drive an NA quite a lot and enjoy the hell out of it every time. I recently sold my mk7 GTi (fantastic car), and now daily an NC Miata with the power hardtop. The Miata can be plenty practical depending on your lifestyle and no matter what speed you're going, it is always fun. I think that's the biggest difference between the BRZ and the Miata. The BRZ is fun if you can cane the hell out of it, but it's just eh if you have to do normal in town driving. The Miata it doesn't matter how fast you are or aren't going, it's still fun, and THEN you can put the top down too. 👍 You know, I really didn't mess with Doug Demuro much at all.....but I clicked on the video anyway, and now that I've seen his face driving a Miata and looking genuinely happy (and at a loss for words for a second or two)...that dudes alright, he knows how to have fun, and he's a real person lol. Carry on Mr. Demuro, carry on.
Exactly. And I can say that after owning two MGs - a '66 MGB and a '51 TD. I have also owned a '97 NA and presently a '99 NB Miata. The Miata is everything no British roadster ever could be - Cheap, Cheerful, and most of all, Reliable.
So much true. No british roadster achieved what the Miata did. And most of all, 30 years later the Miata is still alive and selling well, while all the others - Lotus Elan, Triumph Spitfire, Austin-Healey Sprite, etc. - are dead and gone.
My girlfriend in Hawaii had one, it was awesome, handles like a go cart, so fun to drive with the top down on a nice sunny day in paradise! Ah memories, the good the bad and the miata...
Got my first NA for $1100, then sold it for $1500 and bought an NC for $5600. I’m a big guy so I prefer the NC (I just fit better). But I sure miss the NA’s rawness! Definitely best weekend car ever!
MiloMeower I have a 1990 miata as a first car, it's a great way to learn about stuff like a manual trans and RWD, but the downside is it has ruined a lot of other cars for me, if you call that a downside
rainystorm88 I drove a 95 Miata last year. Raw is not a term i would ever expect to hear in reference to a Miata. It was very well balanced, refined and incredibly sedate. I have an early 80s Alfa Spider...that is raw. Im lucky if i can go 200 miles without popping the hood! I also have a built fox mustang...raw. Idles poorly, lays rubber almost too easy and scares people as I scream past them.
TheSuperc63 By "raw" I meant I could feel everything the car feels -- very turn and every bump. I do admit that I don't have any experiences with the cars you mentioned though ;-)
For no problems in the mistaken sexuality dept., you really have to put on RIMZZZZZ and a racing stripe. And a thru hood blower and a tall trunk spoiler.
You probably won't see this by now since its 2 years after Doug but I daily drive my NA as a pizza delivery driver. It does get a little old getting in and out of it but throwing the top down every night I work, not a day goes by without it putting a smile on my face!
That's great. That's how cars should be experienced. I used to deliver in my 20th Anniversary GTI when I had it. Customers would say "Oh I heard you pull up." haha.
I fucking hate that Americans have to say that about speed and jail.as an American living in thailand "jail" is the last thing on my mind when i speed.

The "sunglass holder" was removable and swappable with an ashtray, and a cup holder, I have the ashtray and the cupholder, and the jit to convert the ashtray into a nicer cup holder (the cup holder is useless unless you are in an automatic or highway cruising because the cup or bottle is in the way when shifting). In the trunk your example car is missing the blue rod that is the jack handle. That sound system is an upgrade, and that bass booster was not in the A,B, or C package Miatas. As an FYI the C package miatas did have power windows, power locks, and Cruse control, B packages had Air Conditioning, power mirrors and Power steering, A packages were stripped t the bone and had power nothing, The CD player was a dealer installed option on the A,B, and C cars, the special edition cars came with everything plus ABS, special colors, and included the top and a power antenna. I daily drove my 1993 Miata back in 2003 to 2004 through two New England winters, a set of snow tires made it a beast in the snow. I now use it as a weekend and lousy work day commuter (if work is going to suck the ride shouldn't). My 1993 has 175,000 miles on it and it needs wheel bearings but other than that it has been far from a money pit.
I got the MX5 from the 2000 model year as my first own car and drove for 13 years in summer and winter. It never ever let me down except for a failed battery because of a harsh winter and parking it outside and not in the garage for a couple of nights. But besides that, it had all the original parts on it when I sold it in 2013. Still today, when I see a black MX5 on the road, I remember all the fun I had in it. The amazing engine, the easy to use roof, the perfect stick shift with its small shifter, the light back which was a hell lot of fun in the winter… So much good memories…
@A real bisexual petrol-head fuck up, everyone has the right to comment on other people's cars. They literally have only pointed out that it needs a respray
I have a 95 Miata used to daily drive to work 150miles round trip 5 times a week for 2 1/2 years never had issue, no mod everything is stock and still runs good with 200,000 miles with original engine. Miata never die they are very reliable car to own, cheap to maintain/insure, fun to drive in corners, canyon ,and easy to park in tight spaces.

Doug the type of guy to do a 22 minute video about a small roadster without big amount of functions and features... almost as long as his videos about luxury cars with lots of cool tech
Keep in mind that this car IS ON COILOVERS. My friend Alex is the owner and it is on a set of Tien coilovers so the ride is significantly more tough than it came from the factory.
Spencer 7445, the MX-5 is about balance, not speed and if only speed is important to you then yes, the MX-5 isn't the right car for you. You'd probably enjoy a Mazdaspeed3 a lot more than the Miata if speed is your thing. Also, it is easy to forget that technology in cars has really exploded since the 90s when this car was new and most new cars come from the factory these days with horsepower ratings that you would only find in performance cars back then. In the mid-90's I owned a 1988 Mustang LX 5.0 notchback which was a quick car back then and a good friend of mine owned a 1995 Miata. My Mustang may have been quicker but that did not make the Miata boring to drive. The Miata was great for what it was- literally a street-legal go-kart that you could have some fun in without getting yourself into too much trouble. I will also say that the Miata never felt slow by any means. It felt quick enough, at least for me, the shifter was a joy to operate- perhaps one of the best shifters and transmissions that I have ever had the pleasure to operate and the exhaust note really suited the car and was a joy to listen to. There have been 3 generations of Miata since the NA however I think that the NA will always be my favorite although the current ND is a Miata that I like almost as much as the original.
The Miata is a brilliant car for sure. People who don't appreciate them really don't know much about cars or the heritage of the British roadsters of the past.
SquiDragon it is, yet at the same time, it's one of the best British sport cars. Top Gear never been known for logic, and that's part of the appeal. Oh yeah, Miata also has been designed in California to add to the confusion.
I've had a '90 for two years. Doug is absolutely correct. At 5/7", I fit really well. The only thing that hurts is my left elbow... the armrest is so friggin' hard. It hates hills but it really does corner like it's on rails. It's a Lotus Elan/Triumph/MG that runs and runs. Feels like it's made of paper, but is super durable and easy to fix. And, it's got air conditioning....
I absolutely lost it, cracking up, when he said it can be yours for under 10 grand. That's a complete understatement. I bought mine for 1500 with 300,000 miles and is absolutely mint. I completely trust the car to get me where im going and id rather drive it over my daily (sn95 mustang). ive owned and driven several cars and can say without a doubt that my 1990 miata is the most fun ive ever had with a car.
Yup, that's probably exactly it. Dailying my NA for the past three years has made me so jaded to almost dying. There's been a few times I had to reach out and punch someone's car while driving.
Bought a stock 92, for $1200. 72k miles. Interior perfect, yokohamas, original everything, including top. Paint bad and so I'm plastic dipping black, and I broke back plastic window...forgot to un-zip, shite.... love this car...love it...love it..love it...weekends along hwy1 and ocean, and cut up through redwood trees...better than a psychiatrist !!!! Cheaper too!!! 30 mpg. Handles fantastic...
Great review. You captured what the Miata is like very well. Bonus points for including getting run off the road by an SUV, and essential Miata ownership experience.
I loved this so much, out looking to buy one myself and this is the exact spec I want to build. I test drove some of them and I had the exact same smiley face the whole way trought the ride lol! Love it Doug keep it up!
Cool to see a Eunos with the black/red! I own LE #0032, but it was repainted white by a previous owner. I'm almost finished restoring the interior, and hope to repaint with the original black color at some point.
I have a Eunos Roadster with the original manual, and the pop up light button is described as a way to release excess under hood temps in city traffic. Also the original manual is great.

The door handles on this model were unique, bespoke and a thing of beautiful engineering...
fosterb and in an Aston Martin

True. My bad.

As a owner of a convertible and a previous owner of 2 other convertibles (not Miata's but the same applies) all i can tell anyone that wants to buy one, Miata or not, is this ....DON'T EVER buy a convertible if you dont have a place to put it... EVER, always remember this,a window is around 120 dollars installed,a convertible top? about 400 dollars just for the top, another 900 dollars to install it (most Convertibles)
So......., if you live in a apartment and or you dont have a cool place to park your ride, dont buy one, do your self that favor and wait for a better time in your life when you have a nice place of your own, just some friendly advice because anytime you piss someone off (mailman, exgirlfriend, old use to be buddy, the local nutcase) that little top and a razor blade will have a meeting and you wont like it AT ALL, i should say your wallet wont like it, ha ha ha, if you can find a convertible with a hardtop thats the way to go but these tend to be very expensive. Convertibles are fun as hell but remember the things that come with owning one.
As an MX-5 Miata owner I always considered myself knowledgeable about the various generations of these cars but your video revealed so many little known features. Very cool! Thanks!

dreams come true, Doug reviewed the miata
You know, I really didn't mess with Doug Demuro much at all.....but I clicked on the video anyway, and now that I've seen his face driving a Miata and looking genuinely happy (and at a loss for words for a second or two)...that dudes alright, he knows how to have fun, and he's a real person lol.

The Miata is the car that every british 2 seater wanted to be.....
ironic, the japanese made a better 2 seat roadster than the people who invented the 2 seat roadster
There are about 625 British sports cars I would rather have than a Miata.
Wilson Martin you’ll need to buy all 625 of them because they’ll each break after a month of driving.

rainystorm88 I drove a 95 Miata last year.
Do you notice a pattern with all mx5-haters seem to be sexually insecure constantly raising questions around this car and sexuality?
We have one and you cannot look straight driving one it’s simply impossible
For no problems in the mistaken sexuality dept., you really have to put on RIMZZZZZ and a racing stripe. And a thru hood blower and a tall trunk spoiler.
Right?
The telling part is that you worry about whether you "look straight". Why should anyone care?
If you are really straight, nothing makes you gay, you make things straight.

That side profile makes it look like the car is three different shades of black
...because it is...
Color matched...🤣 that car is 50 shades of black.
Agreed. It needs a full respray.
Agreed. That right door was replaced once...

And I am WAY more interested in the Miata
Keep in mind that this car IS ON COILOVERS. My friend Alex is the owner and it is on a set of Tien coilovers so the ride is significantly more tough than it came from the factory.
If you have never driven any MX-5 Miata. Do it. It's a memorable experience.
Man O War I want one!! Before I buy an S2000 in the future I'll buy a Miata 😍
I'm 6''7 so I can't lol
Best car I've ever driven. Its my dream car
So true. I've driven one 16 years ago, and been wanting one ever since. One of these days. :-)
The Miata is a brilliant car for sure. People who don't appreciate them really don't know much about cars or the heritage of the British roadsters of the past.

Isn’t it Japanese though?
I daily one and I’m 6’4” lol
I absolutely lost it, cracking up, when he said it can be yours for under 10 grand. That's a complete understatement. I bought mine for 1500 with 300,000 miles and is absolutely mint. I completely trust the car to get me where im going and id rather drive it over my daily (sn95 mustang). ive owned and driven several cars and can say without a doubt that my 1990 miata is the most fun ive ever had with a car.
Because it's Japanese. I also got my 1990 for $1100 and it only has 120k miles
