Ex-NA owner - Those manual window regulators can bind up, if they're starting to feel tight now, take a look at repairing them before a fragile piece snaps!
Gotta make sure to replace the (most likely disintegrated) window bushings with Delrin ones and lube the living hell out of the regulator! That solved the tightness on my NA and I didn't have problems from that point forward.
My 6'3" father got "permission" to buy one in 1990 when they came out. We went to look at one, and his eye line hit the top of the windshield frame, and his head didn't fit with the top up (long-waisted). He almost cried. It was a sad sad day for the entire family.
Love that Yuri is now part of the Miata club! I'm also keeping my NB for as long as I can, staying stock (or OEM+ in some areas), and will pass it along in the family when I can't drive it anymore.
Videos like this are a reminder why you guys are still my favorites on RUclips after six years of watching the channel! Also, as an NA owner, I had no idea about that door handle lock trick, that's friggin' bonkers
Absolutely! My first car was a 1980 Subaru coupé, and as Yuri was instructing Jakub on closing that door, my brain instinctively piped up “no, you gotta hold up the door handle!”. Shout out to all of us old-timers who lived with ‘80’s Japanese cars and their materials choices! Thin paint that wiped off on your fingers, steering wheel and dash plastic and seat fabric that deteriorated in the sun’s UV and crumbled into dust, bottom-of-door rust that bloomed like moldy bread… good times. It amazes me how much better cars age today, a few decades later. Let’s hear it for materials science!
Holding the door handle open while closing the door of the family Japanese cars growing up is so engrained in me that to this day, if I’m locking a door that doesn’t have keyless I will do that. Including the Toyotas.
Me: "He better leave it stock. I'm sick of people modding the hell out of these things" Yuri: "I'm keeping it stock" Me: "I'm still not happy about this decision for some reason" 😂
NAs are perfect cars. Hilarious and slow and so easy to slide at the speed limit with shitty tires. I daily drove my Mariner Blue 1990 in New Jersey all through the winter with my hardtop on and had a blast, but you really need to drive it with motorcycle mentality. Some folks just won't see you for some reason, especially on the highway. Had a few 4 wheel lock ups when getting cut off by drivers that somehow didn't see my bright blue roadster. Defensive driving is key! Have fun, stay safe!

The front bumper gets bent from other people hitting the car while they are parallel parking in front of yours. The front licence plate is the first thing the other car hits, so it will inevitably happen if you leave your Miata somewhere someone can parallel park in front of it. In 1990, parking sensors did not exist, so many people just backed up until they heard a crunch, especially if they were driving a beater.
@@TheStraightPipesI would also check to see if the bumper support brackets are bent or missing. They can also cause deformation in those areas without it. Part # NA01-50-160
This is the most Boston Massachusetts comment ever. If you drive through a grocery store parking lot... SOOOOO many vehicles have minor front bumper and rear bumper damage from using the "back up til it stops" technique. They have not mastered the rear hitch ball/cattle guard technique of Texas.
The wheels are called “daises”. The subframe braces are not mandatory but they help rigidity. You can get a gas pedal cover/extension which also helps heel/toe. 1.6 tombstones always break but the aftermarket is making new ones now. You’ll want to replace the window bushings and lube the guide before the cables fray. Keeping it stockish rocks. I recommend a bigger front sway bar and either koni yellow/reds or TECNA suspension from Supermiata. That’s the perfect OEM+ daily setup. Enjoy!

Plus, and most importantly, it is one of the last manual transmission sports cars you'll be able to buy. Give it another 10 years and ICE engines will be a niche market, with EVs taking over.
I recently bought a 99 NB this year and doing the OEM+ thing too. Installed the flyin miata koni sport stage 2 suspension along with replacing all 22 bushings. I love how this car drives now!

Even though he's going uphill with a passenger and could probably get out and run as fast as the car, he's still grinning ear to ear with the top down and having the time of his life, while a bunch of other people with "more powerful cars" think they're winning some kind of race by stomping their gas pedals to the floor. He doesn't even need to race, because he's already won before the race even starts. What a smart and happy man. And you can be like Yuri too, just go and buy a Miata. 😄👍
Funny story, my first manual was my Miata too. I've bought it at the dealership, asked a friend who drove manual to drive it home for me. I was amazed at how big the headlights looked by the passenger seat. My friend parked it on the driveway, but it's on a slope. So I said to myself ''Shit...if I fuck up I'll have to pay for a garage door. I'm not messing this up.''. The next day I drove it, got it out of the driveway with no issues and learned manual in like 30 seconds. Easiest car to learn manual EVER!
You had a HEADLIGHT 😮by your passenger seat? What on EARTH 🌎 for? That’s the strangest thing I’ve ever heard. Wouldn’t headlights NORMALLY be installed on the OUTSIDE of a car, up front where it’s challenging to see the road at night? 😅
Brings back sooooo many memories! I had a white NA with tan leather and a hard top. Took my pre teen son on a road trip from CT to Cleveland to see a BB game, to Detroit to see the USA play in the '92 World Cup, to Chicago to ride down Lake Shore Drive, and to KKK, IL (maybe I better edit....KKK is the abbreviation for Kankakee) to visit my nearby College. He was impressed with everything except my College! But it was a great father/son experience. Enjoy your Miata.
I had blue in '91 1.8ltr. When first came out choice colour red, blue and white in UK. Rear wheels would skid out with bit of rain during dry summer months. Then had mk3.5 2 ltr. Now have Mk4. The year on year improvements just make this car feel so good to drive. The Mk1 had plastic rear window. In London used to leave glove box open as twice came back to the car to see slit in the plastic window. My cassettes stolen. Love love MX5. Always brings a smile to this aging daily driver 😊
My parents bought a 1981 Mazda 626, manual, new. It was RWD, and I think it had the same engine. I had just gotten my drivers license a few months before and I loved driving it. I still remember the new car smell it gave off. We put 150k miles on it before my mother traded it for a Ford Thunderbird.
I had a '90 Miata and advancing the engine timing plus the lighter weight OEM BBS wheels made a HUGE DIFFERENCE. Car was so much better. I also had the same tires: general altamax
Ah - you guys are inspiring me to get my '97 NA done and on the road! And I also have the stock Daisy wheels, which I will keep just because you said they need to be on it! (and because I am not flush financially)! Thanks for sharing!

DUDE. I also just bought a '90 yata this month. $3000, clean California rust free running and driving car, compared to other ones for sale here it feels like i got it for $1 too. 183k on the clock and its unfortunately all torn apart as i do the short-nose crank repair with my good friend loctite 660. Hoping your crankshaft and timing gear are in better condition than mine, but if you start noticing gradual power loss you'll know why. Mine was also white originally, had a shitty Maaco dark blue paint applied 20 years ago unfortunately. I will admit you guys definitely got the cooler looking steering wheel though. Congrats, glad we're both in the same club now
Welcome to the club Yuri, I didn’t think I’d modify my NC Launch Edition either. I have spent twice what I paid for the car including a BBR225 kit from the UK. An NA is very Yuri.

Loved this. Promised myself to buy one soon. Cx5 isn't enough but the DNA shows. It behaves well at the limit . Feel a bit bad u guys r thrashing on it so hard tho.
I bought or I should say saved a 2006 Subaru Forester X last month. It has 335,000 miles on it. The guy I bought it from was about to junk it. Turned out the crank pulley had come apart and hit the radiator. Used pulley, new radiator and front brakes and I got a winter beater. You can't beat a cheap car.
I had an NA Miata for 11 years. Upgrade to the glass window top if you can. 90's are notorious for the Crankshaft pulley key failure so make sure you have been upgraded to the latter pulley. Mine failed and I needed a new engine. Luckily it was $900 from the wrecker and my dad and I got to have super awesome father/son time swapping the Miata engine. The screws are pressed into the bumper by NPC drivers backing into you while parallel parking. After my 2nd kid I just didn't drive mine. Got a BMW E46 convertible to replace it. Sporty convertibles are awesome.

-2018 Fiata Lusso with Abarth upgrades
Dope. You’ve got my dream job. Love these OG cars!
i cant believe jacub didnt know about the handle thing ! every car from my childhood had that feature!
Shout out to Yuri rockin the Reebok Club Cs!!!!
Match made in heaven.
As a NB and NC owner I fully support Yuri joining the club of Miata smiles and miles!
Yuri looking at Jacob and waiting for the horse and torq 😅😅😅
2:03 i remember those covid races so well. Was extremely fun racing you guys around dragon trail and Tsukuba.
🥰🥰🥰
Love the enthusiasm Yuri has. Everyone should own a “classic” from the 90s era. I personally own a Saab Viggen as my “fun” weekend car lol
Shout out to Bernard! He's a real one!
General tire gang!!
I miss my little MX5, you have got me in the hunt for another
Mod it. Miatas are so much fun to mod, there's just so much cool stuff out there for this platform.
Ah - you guys are inspiring me to get my '97 NA done and on the road! And I also have the stock Daisy wheels, which I will keep just because you said they need to be on it! (and because I am not flush financially)! Thanks for sharing!
I remember those locks from my 90 323 sedan base model.
When we lived in California we bought the 1st generation Miata #400 and what fun we had with it.
Nice... One of The kids across the street from me just got one and fixed it up quite nice.... Don't care for the loud exhaust he put on it.... And I have an Abarth so I'm not just being a prude. It's loud lol
Purchased '91 Miata in 2020 for $2,900. Currently, over $7k total into it. Best part of owning, if there is an issue, someone else has had it too.
wish I grabbed one at that time while they were cheap, now theyre around $3500-$4500 in my area and have rust and/or problems
I had two Nissan 240SX 1990 & 91 and they both had the same door locking feature
Congrats, glad we're both in the same club now
Hell ya miata 1990 Miata gang
Congrats Yuri! 🎉
Welcome to the club Yuri, I didn’t think I’d modify my NC Launch Edition either. I have spent twice what I paid for the car including a BBR225 kit from the UK. An NA is very Yuri.
I have over 250,000 Kilometers on my 1990.
Stock except for a new paint job.
Love it.
Drove to Mexico from Vancouver.
Fun drive, and economical.
So wild these guys hv so much passion abt the miata. They drive all the best stuff. Seldom saw them so excited
It's like driving my 1990 Suzuki Carry, 660 cc engine, 40 horsepower, 5 speed manual. It's the most fun you can have driving the speed limit.
I remember watching Motorweek’s test drive of this car when new, still remember the shot of the tiny door handles!
Love this video! Hoping I can get my own Miata someday and extend my Mazda collection.
The wheel design is based on a wheel called Minilites. Yes, they were popular on triumphs and minis in the 60s.
My first gen 4Runner needed you to hold up the handle to lock the doors. +1 for Yuri
Most old cars and trucks back in the day (not just Japanese vehicles) had the same door handle feature to prevent folks from locking themselves out.
I definitely remember it on the family's '82 NISSAN/Datsun Sentra hatchback and I want to say my '81 VW Scirocco had it also.
My 85 Toyota Celica had the “hold the handle up to lock the doors” feature Jakob.
Our 74 Corona too
My 01 GS430, 04 WRX, 06 IS350, 08 ISF, didn’t
Ah see that’s the issue. Once keyless entry became common that feature went away.
if anyone has had an 03 Jetta it has that feature also!
Dude, congrats. Awesome ride!! Can't wait to see more of it
shoutout to the real mvp uncle Berner and shoutout to Mazda Canada! I share Yuris enthusiasm my dad used to have a 1990 Miata so fun to always it to redline and I dont think ive ever seen a roll down window Miata!
My 1990 was 3000 but automatic and came with a hardtop, was rotted out, was 4000$ in paint and bodywork. And now this winter going to Dave’s garage for manual swap 3000
Omg I love the Macgruber reference lol! Good work Yuri
Tim Horts cup behind the passenger seat as the "cupholder" is wildness
No point in fixing the cosmetic stuff. As long as the mechanical are working it seems like a solid win.
Good for you, Yuri
I have seen this beast in the wild - and she’s STUNNING 🤩
About time! Welcome to the club!
Thank you
@@TheStraightPipes no problem! I look forward to seeing more videos with this miata!. But man, you guys look just as excited as me when I got my 1990 NA. Amazing car! Brings back memories.
@TheStraightPipes Also thanks for sharing what tires you got. I have to replace mine and I didn't know what brand I should get! It currently has ones from 2007 🤣
Yuri us crazy during the top fold down
Good choice Yuri! Welcome to the Miata family 👍🏼
Thanks for having me
Old Nissans, Mazdas, Subarus and Suzukis lock the driver side door that way. Yuri knows the cool ones. 😁
Love my 1990 white manual Miata too! Super reliable, I AX, max it out in 2nd car (there is a rev limiter). Speaking of movies with NA's, it was also featured in David Cronenberg's Crash, albeit upside down.
Yes yes Jacob (kuba) i had Mazda 626 1998 hold a hand to lock the door from outside.. yuri is right!
