    Ooohhh this one is an interesting one! Can't believe this was from 1248. Crazy how long ago that was.

      Definitely - though timelines get a bit crazy in Greece of course ;)

    Very interesting. I found this while trying to find the location of 3 old postcards I purchased years ago, and here you are with a tour. Excellent job. The postcards are probably more than 100 years old so the buildings are not at all restored. The hill is visible but not what Mystras overlooks which you showed so nicely. Thank you.

    I like when the World Heritage Sites are top of the hill like Archaeological Site of Mystras. Because you can learn about the history, enjoy the view and being in nature. Did you go off-peak or it is not busy generally

      I think this one is generally not too busy, as it's right down the southern end of the Peleponnese peninsula. It was off-peak as well (September), but it's a fair way from the tourist trail I think.

      Most visitors of Peloponnese preferes to visit older and more famous sites like Olympia and Epidaurus and Mycenae which can be really crowded...
      Greece has so many unique places!

    Hagia Sofia, frescoes, and views - so beautiful and interesting. I'd love to wander those trails and gardens. Fascinating place.

    13th Century is ancient by US standards haha! The site looks so cool and it seems like you'd get a great view from up there too. How cool to look out over Sparta!

      Very true! Though we've recently been to some Native American spots in the south-west that are about the same age!

    Nice Video. If you go to Mystras, be SURE to check out the Pantanassa Monastery. It is STILL a functioning monastery (even tho the buildings are about 600 years old!).
    PS Just FYI - Hagia Sophia means Holy Wisdom (of God), not Saint Sophia. Check out the

    Are you using a drone for some of those shots? Lovely frescos and do I see some stucco work as well?

    • @WorldHeritageJourney
      @WorldHeritageJourney  5 лет назад +1

      No drone, just a very steep hill 😂 Yep, some great stucco painting inside the churches as well, well spotted!

    Very typical orthodox looking churches. Beautiful. This place is absolutely beautiful. Did you say this was in Greece? Awesome.

      This is in Peloponnese peninsula (southern Greece) near Sparta. The churches are Orthodox . Most Greeks are Orthodox.

    Whoever made the title “Hajus of Fear” misheard the speaker. His pronunciation of “Hagia Sophia” ( Holy Wisdom) is probably the reason. Someone should correct that title.

    A site I wasn't aware looks a very interesting place and doesn't seem too busy either. Is it easy to get to?

    • @WorldHeritageJourney
      @WorldHeritageJourney  5 лет назад

      It's right in the south of the Pelepponese so you'd need a car, but the roads in Greece are actually pretty good.

    That looks like a really interesting place to explore with all those old pathways. I pity the poor underlings that had to carry all those stones to the top to build the citadel

      Absolutely! I can guess how much they got paid for their labour as well :-/

    13th century is still kinda ancient to me but it makes sense. The Old Greece was waaaay older. Love the Byzantine architecture!

      Yeah it's a beautiful spot! Funny to think that this is a relatively young site for Greece!

    You should know that the church of Agia ( or Hagia) Sophia is dedicated (same as the famous one in Istanbul) not to someone named Saint Sophia but rather to “Holy Wisdom”. Sophia = Wisdom in the Greek language.
