- Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2008 | After enjoying Greece's charming old port town of Nafplio, we'll time-trip through the ruins of Olympia, take center stage at the remarkably preserved theater at Epidavros, and explore the ancient capital of Mycenae. Then we'll wander off the beaten path along the rustic, rough-and-tumble Mani Peninsula, relax in the idyllic beach town of Kardamyli, and marvel at Greece's Rock of Gibraltar: the fortress town of Monemvasia. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #greece

PROUD GREEK FROM AUSTRALIA BORN OF PELOPONNESIAN GREEK PARENTS...WISH I COULD VISIT GREECE ESPECIALLY THE PELOPONNESE
Γειά αδερφέ καλό καλοκαίρι
I’m moving to a farm next to Epidavros soon. It’s so beautiful there 😁👍🏼

What about being Australian? Aren't you proud of that?
@@tank3323 This video is about Greece, not Australia, hence the focus. Don't be woke.

GREECE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY I HAVE SEEN; I HAVE VISITED IT FOUR TIMES.
Proud Peloponnesian Greek. 💪
A beautiful Peloponnesian
@@roldex213 Oh thank you.
Where abouts? my villa is is in a small village called chrani not far from kalamata
@@katerinapatiniotis5598 nice documentary, she doesn't have a reason to lie about the nationality. Peleponese (Morea) was populated by Albanians now days called Arvanite, that region gave so many Arvanite heroes on the independence war. Learn some history don't be mean!
namesurname86 Arvanites accounted for less than 10% of the population of the Peloponnese(certain villages in the north east) and they self identified as Greek. Perhaps some ultranationalist Albanians need to over their fanaticism and hatred towards other cultures.
My ancestry on my Mother's side is Greek. Both my Grandmother and Grandfather were born and raised in Sparta and Athens. They both came to America in the early 1900's. I am more Greek (50%) than English and love my Greek heritage! We celebrated many Greek traditions with my 12 Greek Aunts, Uncles and their families. Wonderful memories from times long gone... Thank you for this informative video:-).
I first went to Greece in 1981, and it was love at first sight.
The second best Greek of all times after Alexander the Great was born that year. Me! Don't say I'm not modest. As you see I placed Alexander first. hehe!
By far and away one of the most accurate historical, religious and cultural narratives to accompany this truly beautiful video. Rick Steves deserves the highest praises.
Greece and the islands of Greece with its rich history and culture has to be one of the most fascinating places on earth no doubt ..its simply beautiful,
Bonzeka you're create!!!! Many kisses from corfu Hellas
@Margaret Kpeh Amen
@Jordan & Jordan you are in every Greek video commenting negative stuff about Greece. I can’t imagine how miserable your life is. Jealous enough? cope

GREECE IS SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!! GREETINGS FROM BEAUTIFUL PRAGUE :)
I'm a greek and prague is one of my most favorite cities that I've ever visited. Its extraordinary,I felt like i was in a fairytale!
Prague is indeed beautiful and magical, I've been there twice. Love from Greece
@@DMp-xp6mj It's strange to me to imagine travelling to other countries. I'm nearly 50 years old and I've never been out of the states. My husband is from England. He told me that travelling to other countries, when you live in the UK or in Europe, is like to travelling to another state in the United States.
@@atlantic_love Distance wise probably, the USA is a massive country but in all other aspects not so much. see we don't speak the same language and our cultures are quite distinct from one another. Though when I as a Greek travel to Southern Europe I feel very much at home even if I can't understand the language.
I find all Rick Stevens videos not very beautiful but very educational They amazing and magical
Greece still lives in ancient times just like almost Countries in Europe,Love how they Preserve their beautiful towns and Villages as well as respecting and valuing their nature.!
@@MIHELISHAR So true. Athens was different.
They preserve it because they literally live of it, but fair enough!
Actually, as a Greek, i think that is a big lie. I mean, there is a lot of people (Greeks, and not only) which the do not respect our nature, and they throw their garbage in sea, street etc
Greece is on top of my list. Going there 2020
The beauty of Greece will shock you !
Me too!!! I am so happy
Sure, what about corona..?
Oops
You can still come, btw. We are the safest country to visit as far as covid goes
Greetings from Bulgaria . Greece is really beautiful .
Greetings from Algeria do You know algeria
It is
Thank you friend! Bulgaria is also nice I was there last summer 😀
My grandma grew up in a village in the mountains near Kardamyli. I'd really like to visit one day.
Do you know the name of the village?
Epidavros theatre is such a treasure. The place where so many thousands plays were presented, the place were drama, tragedy and comedy came to exist. The leaps made in ancient Greece are mind boggling.
I think that no visit to Peloponnese is complete without a visit to Mystras. So along with Olympia, Epidavros, Mycenae, Nafplion, Monemvasia, one has to visit Mystras also.
Yes, but Steves said he chose not because there are many ruins, not in good condition. When Mystras is preserved better with buildings that are in bad condition renovated it will be one of the best places and towns in the world. A place to film Game of Thrones. A true Byzantine city.
Also I would put Methoni and Koroni, and perhaps some of the villages of Arkadia such as Dimitsana or Karitaina. And the Diros cave one of the best in the world. And Pylos! And perhaps a little across to central Greece to Nafpaktos :) :) And the ancient Corinth and natural baths of Loutraki.
@@innosanto The palace of the last Byzantine emperor has been renovated and most of the churches also. Mystras is in a good contition now.
@@nicolaskottis5245 Mystras is a whole town. No buildings have been renovated except the churches and even the palace-complex renovation is not complete. But most important the residences of the town are not renovated.
@@innosanto I visited Mystras in 2017 and they told me that the despots palace was expected to be finished within a year. What a pity.
God bless Greece the beautiful country
Peloponnese, the part of the country where ancient Greek, venetian and Byzantine cultural influences coexist in a perfect way. Peloponnese is also home to one of the best ski resorts of Europe: Helmos
I traveled two weeks last summer driving around in all the cities mentioned in the film, Monnemvasia is absolutely my favorite, and the driving cute from Nafplio to Mommemvasia on the mountain with sea view most of the route is one of the most beautiful routes! People from Greece are just SO nice, will visit more of Greece for sure!
The white arctic fox in purple northern light thaks you for your nice words im really glad you enjoyed it

I found this tonight in RUclips. Thanks for all these.

I'd visit Kalamata city beautiful area and Methoni/Koroni in Peloponnese. For some reason they never mention these areas but very beautiful areas. Greece has always been one of my favorite places to visit with my family as a kid and even now as an adult.

Greece is just so so underrated, compared to its European counterparts. It offers such wonderful historical sites and information of the past that it gives tourist a feeling that the country is a field trip for those interested to know more of its ancient history, culture, and military prowess.😊
Rick Steve manages to unearth all the best in a place and make its beauty, its history, its people, shine. This Peloponnesean tour is no exception. Εύγε!
What a view🙋‼️Soooooooo beautiful💞!Thanks for featuring Greece.It's like I was there too.Hope I can visit Greece 🙋
Fascinating history of our ancient culture of the Western world.
Indeed, it's yours, too. That's why us Greeks calling our land the cradle of Western Civilization. Not to tone our own name, but all Europeans we share the continent with.
Toured around for 2 weeks, Athens, Delphi, Olympia, epidaurus, Messina, Sparta, Mycenae, . All fantastic.
I love how Rick manages to make these so comprehensive and yet not overwhelming with information. Great Job!!
How wonderful is this? To be able to visit countries without leaving the house because of the the uncertain world we live in today.
Geweldig in beeld gebracht, 18 jaar geleden ongeveer 3 maanden gewoond in Kardamyli en vrijwel heel de Peloponnesos bezocht, brengt vele mooie herinneringen boven bij mij. Moet daar echt weer eens naar terug. Thanks Rick

Love your videos and I know the Peloponnesos quite well and will be back again in Sept. Think you should have shown something of Pylos and Bay of Navarino where the Greeks really began their independence following the destruction of the Turkish/ Egyptian fleet by a combined British, French and Russian fleet. There are memorials to all the nationalities around the area and a statue to Admiral Codrington the British commander of the fleet. It's well documented in Wikipedia.
Butch 78, Bravo!! You know our history very well!!! Come again to our country! Greetings from Greece ⚓⛵🌞

Demetrius, the herb and olive guy. How wonderful to hear you have something you “love” to do. A blessing from God. Kalamata olives😍....a blessing too. May you be blessed with a wonderful new year.
My husband and I visited Greece and loved everything about it, but it does seem like everything one wants to do there involve hiking it up the side of a cliff. If we could do it though, in July, almost anyone can.
Watching these videos about the Mediterranean countries is so relaxing
Greece is the best place I have ever been to. Despite their political issues, always wish I was born there! ❤
Trully a great work of art.Rick is the best!
A very good overview of this fascinating and ancient land. I was fortunate to live in Greece for a number of years in the 1960`s, and seeing the Peloponnese again in this short tour was wonderful. The only thing I would add ( apart from no Sparta !! ) would be that, back then, there were very few tourists :)
A beautiful country with a vast amount of significant history. I, even as a Romanophile have to defer to the glory of Hellas!!😮
The Peloponnese has it all! Beautiful nature, amazing cultural heritage and archaeological sites, great food and very friendly people (and fewer tourists, which is great!). Absolutely worth touring it :-)

If you go to the Peloponnese, you should definitely do Nafplio, Monemvasia, Gythio and Mystra castle next to Sparta (and the Taygetos mountains next to Sparta and the Diros cave!!) all easily accessible with a road trip...villages by road trip: Arcadia: Dimitsana/Lagkadia/Karitena (Karytaina) and Kalavryta which has a ski resort good for winter!
If you go on Peloponnese you should go everywhere. Not only in these places. There are better places from these your are mentioned
don't forget Pylos, Kyparisia, kalamata etc. You can't actually visit Peloponnese for only 1 time, you need at least 2 or 3 trips (for a foreigner)
I have been to most of these places in 2013 when my son and daughter-in-law got married there...my daughter in law is part Greek/ American...such a beautiful and breath taking place..
