    I lived there in the mid eighties for nearly 5 years. I was reminded of how lucky as an American kid I was to live amongst culture, history and amazing cuisine. I lived in a beach resort town about 25 minutes north of Napoli in the south end of Pinetamare at Fontana Bleu. My parents were avid travelers and always took me on vacation. I remember historical things that would easily be forgotten reading a text book in class. I knew the average kid my age back home would never have this opportunity. I think most military kids who live in exotic places overseas are handed this lottery ticket of opportunity. It was a short trip from the NATO base to the Mergellina rail station and about 10 to 15 min to Piazza Garibaldi. I miss the markets, trips so Sorrento, Ischia, Capri. I was always in the moment.

    Love this show! In naples dont try to find the fancy restaurants. Find the pizzerias in the side alleys with plastic chairs, the food here is cheap and superb in quality. The people in Naples are so kind and willing to help a lost tourist (do beware of con artists and pickpockets). The thing that surprised me the most is the vast amount of Cultural heritage this city has produced across almost every age past!

    I found Naples to be actually much safer than Rome. We were in Naples for a week travelling from Venice and then continuing to Rome. At first, I thought that I will die in there in an hour, but it didn't take long for me to start liking that place. I fell in love with Napoli one evening when we went out for a pizza(going to Napoli and not tasting their exquisite world's most original pizza is a sin) and, by a total coincidence, Napoli, their football team, was playing that evening. It was just gorgeous how the whole city stopped and watched big screens in all those restaurants. Just an unique experience. And the city is very tourist-friendly, it is very cheap, we got an accommodation in the very center of the city center(right on the street of Spaccanapoli) in a beautiful old house for a very good price, a price I couldn't dream of getting for a city center place even in my hometown.
    But in the Rome, the very first day we were there I got my ID wallet stolen... I got no money there, because ever since I got it stolen in my hometown, I wear two separate wallets - one for ID cards and stuff and another one for money and credit cards that I usually keep literally on my heart - in the inner pocket of my jacket or a shirt, so the thief just threw it on a ground when escaping and I got it back, but anyway...
    One almost surreal scenery in Naples occured to us when we were walking down the street to our accomodation and we met a crowd of people carrying a coffin and shouting something about stopping a mafia. We found out it was a funeral of a boy that was killed by some gang two days ago... Absolutely surreal. But regardless of that, we didn't really feel threatened, people there, even though some of them looked like mafians, were really helpful and nice. We also took a break from our sightseeing to go to one of their lovely islands, a small island with only one little town on it called Procida and took a bath in the sea. It was an oasis of quiet and beauty. We had a really great time there and I would go back there anytime!

    • @thrustvectoring8120
      @thrustvectoring8120 8 лет назад +3

      Jay Clarke Yeah, we were there last year and it was visible that they are trying to improve the safety, there were soldiers patrolling all around the city. A day before we arrived the police actually arrested a major mafia group, something like 30 guys, most of them mafia bosses, but I don't know if it was a good thing or a bad thing, because I heard that those mafians had a respect for tourists and some of them even protected tourists because the tourism was a profitable source of income. But 10 years ago, Naples was in a deep trouble, they even went bankrupt, so I can imagine that it would be a bad place for a holiday back then...

    Personally, I find Naples safe, which is not what my Italian friends say; then again they haven't lived in the parts of London I have! The food is Amazing, the contemporary art (Villa Madre for example) has one of the world's best collections. All up, it gets my thumbs up. It does feel more Eastern to me than European, there are elements of Bangkok (another of my favourite cities for its culture, food and diversity) and my Neapolitan partner says it feels more like Moroccan, which is great when you crave variance. Either way, a big plus is, it isn't overly touristed. Date last visited: 2020

    Gaetano Manfredi the Italian archeologist who gives Rick Steves a tour in Pompeii ( 15:00 min of the video) is not only intelligent and engaging in his explanations but also incredible handsome! I've been on several tours with Gaetano and can confidently say- if you happen to visit Pompeii - only go with Gaetano !
    He is incredible !!

    Naples unfairly earned a negative reputation up through the end of the 20th Century.. The HQ of the USN 2nd fleet and a main liberty port for Navy East coast ships carried a lot of negative stories home. Today it's a major stopover port in general for cruise lines floating the Med. Also one of the main jumping off points to the Isles of Capri and Ischia or over to Sicily . The city underwent a recent major cleanup and even bravely survives a garbage strike every 4 years.. Working hard to improve it's image. Glad it was on my list.

    Thank you so much for the mention of St. Giuseppe Moscati. Like many Catholics I find the hagiography version, the official propaganda, of such people unhelpful (putting it mildly). However, the Italian TV movie on RUclips listed as Saint Guiseppe Moscati, English subtitles, is very beautifully shot in Naples. It is also true to the true events. It shows the enormous warmth and joy Dr. Moscati brought to the profession and how heartbroken he was when the Fascist/corporate government took over medical schools.
    I got some holy cards with a prayer for a young man doing his residency. His sister plays volleyball and her team went to Naples last summer, staying in the Spanish Quarter in a Air B&B. Since she is also my grandson's girl friend, I now have someone to talk to about Naples.
    Grazie Mille, for this excellent show.

    Very interesting the Spanish heritage of Naples and much of today's Italy, in this case very noticeable in the flag of Naples itself and the Napolitan language, one of many languages and dialects of Italy.

      Matt Owen Spanish occupied Naples & rest of the Italian south, but I challenge any Spanish speaker to see if he can understand the Napolitan language. even Non Naples "italian" speakers can't fully understand! perhaps its because Spain wasn't the only one to occupy. Byzantines, Romans, Austrians, Greeks, French bourbons.

      @Michele La Mura I linguisti sostengono che la somiglianza del napoletano allo spagnolo, non dipende da una diretta influenza della lingua spagnola sul napoletano, ma dalla comune origine delle due lingue. Così come l'Italiano è simile allo spagnolo perchè entrambi derivano dal latino, la stessa cosa vale per il napoletano. Di conseguenza il napoletano è simile non solo allo spagnolo ma a tutte le lingue neolatine europee, come il francese e il portoghese. Non dimentichiamo che la lingua napoletana (la lingua parlata in gran parte del Sud, quello che intendi tu, cioè il dialetto dell'area metropolitana di Napoli, è una sottocategoria della lingua napoletana) deriva anche dal greco antico e dalla lingua dei popoli autoctoni della Campania, gli Osci...
