Good tutorial Sean Thank you. There is a dark shadow that appears in the same spot on both still pictures and videos replays. How do I get rid of it?... Bob
Thanks for your reply. Apologies for my very delayed response. Did you ever get this sorted? It’s tough for me to provide feedback without seeing an example of what you are referring to.
Set dimensions to 16:9, which is the default video mode. I've never been too concerned about frame rate. Check out this video if you want to learn more: ruclips.net/video/_BYj8lhUh3s/видео.html
@@Sean_Twomey My old lumix gave up the ghost after many years of reliable use. My main use is when i am out hiking taking landscape/scenery shots which is the reason i went for a longer optical zoom. I haven't put it through its paces yet but hopefully will give it a test run this coming weekend...
Hey, I just switch the dial to video mode and shoot. You could probably set it to manual, change the settings and then record video using your custom settings, but to do that you would need to experiment. Generally I've been happy with just shooting my travel vlogs in the video setting. I hope that helps. Cheers, Sean
Hi Barbara, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I don't know of a similar tutorial. However a lot of the interface will be very similar. I hope you find what you're looking for. Cheers, Sean

Thanks, are you editing on a computer or phone? Please answer, and if on the computer can you do a guide to the editors on the computer? So, thank you so much !!!
Thanks for your comment. I edit my videos on a MacBook Pro as doing 99% of all digitally creative tasks (like editing) can be completed more efficiently and more enjoyable using a laptop or desktop computer vs using a phone.
When you set the camera on flash mode, does the flash automatically pop up when you taking pictures? or you have to manually use the switch button first to pop up the flash before taking pictures with flash?
I enjoyed learning about the 730 with Sean. Thanks a lot. The explanations were easy to understand and included all the important subjects, not to compare to the poor tutorial from Canon.
I used to use Screenflow for Mac and now I've switched to Final Cut Pro X and am loving it. Back in the day I used Microsoft Movie Maker and I've also used iMovie. Start with whatever you have and then upgrade depending on what you need.
Hi Fei Go, no - I would not recommend this camera for low light vlogging. You'd want to look at some other options. Personally I would use my iPhone 8 or iPhone 12. Otherwise you should consider getting a more high end camera that performs better in low light. Unfortunately, I don't have any recommendations, as I don't shoot with high end cameras. Cheers, Sean
We love this camera. Your video is great. We use this camera for lots of flower close ups and having problems keeping it in macro and getting a good focus. Exactly how does the macro work? Can you manually adjust the focus? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Dennis Hodgkins - Hey Dennis, yes you can manually set the camera into Macro when you’re in manual mode, but I don’t actually believe you can focus manually. When the camera is on auto, then it automatically switches to macro mode when an object is close enough to the lens. I hope this helps. Happy shooting. Cheers, Sean
Hi, sorry for my delayed reply. When shooting at night, always use a tripod and use the timer to minimize/avoid shake caused by your hands. Cheers, Sean

HI Sean, Thank you so much for making this video. I have the SX720 HS digital wifi version. It is quite similar so your video is still helpful to me. However, I have a question: whenever I connect the camera to the my smart TV I am able to see the pictures (folders, etc) but I am unable to view the videos. Why is this?
Hey Janet, thanks for your question. I should definitely create a video like that. I still use a 2015 Macbook Pro, which has the SD Card slot. So I generally take the SD cards out of my cameras, insert them into my mac and then copy the files across. I'm planning to create a course on video production and this would definitely be one of the lessons in that course. Would you be interested in a course like that? I hope that helps. Cheers, Sean
@@Sean_Twomey Hi Sean, yes I would be interested. Hi ItzNonStop, yes you sure can. While in auto mode, you can simply hit the video record button and the camera will start shooting video. For best results, I do however prefer to switch to video mode myself. Cheers, Sean
Hey Summer Vlogs, thanks for your kind comment. I answered your question in one of your other comments. Here it is again: ===== Hey, I've been using a SanDisk 32GB (40 MB/s) SD card in my Canon Powershot SX730HS, which has worked fine for me. Here is the closest that I could find on Amazon: amzn.to/31l7ftb If you're going to shoot loads and loads of footage, then get a larger SD card (64 GB or 128GB). The writing speed X MB/s is important so that the camera can write the data to the disc without a problem. As I said for me, the 40 MB/s card has worked perfectly, but I don't see an issue if you get a card that supports a faster speed. On the official user manual for this camera (www.canon.co.za/cameras/powershot-sx730-hs/specifications/), they state: Memory Card Type: Type SD, SDHC, SDXC (UHS Speed Class 1 compatible) Here is an interesting article to read: petapixel.com/2014/06/24/back-basics-difference-sd-sdhc-sdxc-best/ Here is an excerpt from that article: ======== "First off you might be asking yourself, ‘What is SD?’ SD stands for Secure Digital. SDHC? Secure Digital High Capacity. And SDXC? Secure Digital eXtended Capacity. Other formats include miniSD and microSD but your DSLR will not accept these. There is no quality/security difference between these three formats. Cards labeled SDHC usually have a capacity of 4GB - 32GB. SDXC formats can be very large and expensive. For the purpose of this guide, I am going to recommend that everyone stick with SDHC format. These cards have more than enough storage, even for the most trigger-happy shutterbug. You will see a Class 2,4,6 or 10 on SD Cards. This is the speed rating which measures maximum transfer speed for reading and writing images to and from a memory card, expressed as megabytes per second. However, video doesn’t need as big a data pipe because the video format is a smaller “fixed stream” that uses only a portion of the data pipe." ======== I hope this helps. Have a great weekend. Cheers, Sean
Hi there nice guide, I know this video was posted a while ago but wonder if you could advise, when filming video there is a black blur at the edge of the screen when moving the camera. Probably going to send it back unless there is something that can be done in settings to fix this? Thanks
Hi, I'm sorry to hear that. Yes, that does not sound right. I'd contact Canon support or get a replacement unit. I hope you get it sorted. Cheers, Sean
What would you suggest for indoor pictures? I keep trying different settings but am finding some come out blurry and some clear. I can't figure out why.

thank you very much for this video!!!! now I can start using my camera in the correct way!!!! Cheers!!!!
Hi Sierra, I just set it to video and started shooting. When starting out, it's best to just shoot, edit, publish and learn ... there will always be time later to get the best video quality. I like keeping things simple at first and then refining them later. I hope that helps. Have a great day.
What settings would you use for sunsets. Every time I point it at the sun three pink circles appear in every shot. I use my iPhone and it comes out perfect
Hey, yeah iPhones have some seriously awesome computation photography abilities. Your iPhone shoots in HDR and will always produce a better sunset photo compared to this camera. Maybe stick with the iPhone for sunsets.
Hi sean just wondering what sd card would yo recommend for vlogging on this camera. I want to know the mgb per second, size, and capasity. thank you and loved your video

I generally just use the dedicated video mode, which uses auto settings. You can then make further adjustments in your editing and post production. You could also consider getting the Sony ZV-1, which shoots in 4K. I've shot all my most recent talking head videos with the ZV-1. You can see my unboxing video here: ruclips.net/video/pyJpvuRA85E/видео.html Alternatively, I shoot a lot of my videos on my iPhone 12 Mini in 4K, which works really well, given how compact and affordable these cameras are. Using larger and more expensive cameras will of course give a better result. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for doing this video. I just got my Canon last night and you have helped me a lot. I'm excited to use it.
Damaris Melo - Thanks for the kind feedback. Have fun and let me know if you have any other questions.
What settings would you reccomend for vlogging?
Hi, thanks for the questions. For vlogging, I just shoot using auto on the video recording mode. It's simple and works for me.Then I use the flip screen to monitor my shot as I film (framing, lighting balance, etc.). Hope this helps.
@@Sean_Twomey Thank you so much~ ill do that then
Brilliant video thank you. I've recently really got into photography and my partner bought me this camera. But I had no idea how to work it 🤷😂. Thank you. I can now go out and have lots of fun now !
Hey Ruth, thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you found it valuable. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks for this video. I haven't found the user manual very helpful at all - too much toggling back and forth from one link to another, and too much technical language - but your walk-through cleared up some of my questions.
Hi Brenda, I'm glad you found my video useful. Thanks for your kind words. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers, Sean
Thanks so much my mum ordered the sx740 for me it’s really good 👊🏽🔥
Hey Jay, I’m stoked to hear that. Thanks for your comment and happy shooting in 4K. I’m considering upgrading to the SX740. Have a great weekend. Cheers, Sean
Hi! If I am filming a video for youtube with this camera do you know what I should set the frame and dimensions to???
Set dimensions to 16:9, which is the default video mode. I've never been too concerned about frame rate. Check out this video if you want to learn more: ruclips.net/video/_BYj8lhUh3s/видео.html
I am very grateful for this super explanation. It was just what I had hoped for, Sean.
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Sean
Thank you for breaking down the camera, helped a lot!
Alfred Nilsson - Glad you found it useful. Thanks for commenting.
Just purchased this camera so thanks for the video, very helpful indeed...
Congrats on your purchase and I'm glad you found my video useful. Any specific plans for what you'll be using your new camera for?
@@Sean_Twomey My old lumix gave up the ghost after many years of reliable use. My main use is when i am out hiking taking landscape/scenery shots which is the reason i went for a longer optical zoom. I haven't put it through its paces yet but hopefully will give it a test run this coming weekend...

What are the best settings for recording travel vlogs ? Or even sit down vlogs?
Hey, I just switch the dial to video mode and shoot. You could probably set it to manual, change the settings and then record video using your custom settings, but to do that you would need to experiment. Generally I've been happy with just shooting my travel vlogs in the video setting. I hope that helps. Cheers, Sean
Sean P Twomey Thanks Sean!
Nice tutorial. I have a Canon sx720 HS 40 Zoom. Do you know a good tutorial for that? Can't seem to find one. Thanks.
Hi Barbara, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I don't know of a similar tutorial. However a lot of the interface will be very similar. I hope you find what you're looking for. Cheers, Sean
Great video, do you know if an external wind microphone would work on this camera?
This camera does not have a mic input, so you would need to record audio separately/on a separate device and sync in post production.
Hello, this was a great, detailed video. Thank you. One question, when filming a RUclips video & vlogging, what aspect ratio should the camera be in?
Hi, you want to film in 16:9 aspect ratio. When using the video recording mode on the camera, then it automatically records in that aspect ratio. I hope that help. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers, Sean
thanks for the tutorial .very interesting. just bought this camera
Awesome, glad you found it useful. Enjoy the camera. Let me know if you have any other questions and have an awesome week further. - Sean
OK thank you very much!!!
When you set the camera on flash mode, does the flash automatically pop up when you taking pictures? or you have to manually use the switch button first to pop up the flash before taking pictures with flash?
Hi I just watched your video and it’s such a helpful video. Thank you so much
Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed my tutorial. Cheers, Sean
Good teaching about system of camera model
Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm glad you found it helpful.
I enjoyed learning about the 730 with Sean. Thanks a lot. The explanations were easy to understand and included all the important subjects, not to compare to the poor tutorial from Canon.
Hi Beatrix, thanks for your kind feedback. Cheers, Sean
Hi. So I got the cam but the video is sorta grainy. Could you help me fix it please 😭
Hi Kradful-Pride(Krad), would you be able to share a link to some sample footage?
Yes it’s this one ruclips.net/video/MUa3SDU9UWI/видео.html
Thanks, which editing app are you editing? Please answer
I used to use Screenflow for Mac and now I've switched to Final Cut Pro X and am loving it. Back in the day I used Microsoft Movie Maker and I've also used iMovie. Start with whatever you have and then upgrade depending on what you need.
@@Sean_Twomey Okay, thank you
thank u so much. U made things easier to understand
Hey Giao, thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you found my video helpful.
How about vlogging in low light? Is this good enough?
Hi Fei Go, no - I would not recommend this camera for low light vlogging. You'd want to look at some other options. Personally I would use my iPhone 8 or iPhone 12. Otherwise you should consider getting a more high end camera that performs better in low light. Unfortunately, I don't have any recommendations, as I don't shoot with high end cameras. Cheers, Sean
Another very informative video Sean. Thank you for sharing, I am learning so much from you.
E Miff -Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you found it useful.
Thanks Sea, i really enjoyed that ad learned a lot about my new hand camera :)
Hi Ginny, thanks for the comment. Glad you found it useful. All the best for 2021. - Sean
Any suggestions on the best settings for photos-recording fireworks Great Tutorial Thank you
Hi, sorry for my delayed reply. When shooting at night, always use a tripod and use the timer to minimize/avoid shake caused by your hands. Cheers, Sean
hey man cool review i wonder how good is this camera for wildlife photography i mean photo quality at max zoom
For the price and form factor, I feel it's excellent! Especially for wildlife photography, I've gotten some great shots.
Do you have a video showing us how to transfer data to laptop to be able to edit videos?
Hey Janet, thanks for your question. I should definitely create a video like that. I still use a 2015 Macbook Pro, which has the SD Card slot. So I generally take the SD cards out of my cameras, insert them into my mac and then copy the files across. I'm planning to create a course on video production and this would definitely be one of the lessons in that course. Would you be interested in a course like that? I hope that helps. Cheers, Sean
It has wifi like canon sx60
You can transfer through there.
@@Sean_Twomey Hi Sean, yes I would be interested. As a matter of fact, I just received my Canon SX740 HS and I came back to watch your video to learn how to set up my settings etc. since the sx730 and the sx740 are almost the same. Will be looking forward to your video productions course videos. I do vlogs and all help is needed.

can you shoot vlogging videos on auto mode also?
Hi ItzNonStop, yes you sure can. While in auto mode, you can simply hit the video record button and the camera will start shooting video. For best results, I do however prefer to switch to video mode myself. Cheers, Sean
I loved you video! So helpful! I am getting this camera and was wondering what SD card size is ideal for this camera
Hey Summer Vlogs, thanks for your kind comment. I answered your question in one of your other comments. Here it is again:

Hey, I've been using a SanDisk 32GB (40 MB/s) SD card in my Canon Powershot SX730HS, which has worked fine for me. Here is the closest that I could find on Amazon: amzn.to/31l7ftb
If you're going to shoot loads and loads of footage, then get a larger SD card (64 GB or 128GB). The writing speed X MB/s is important so that the camera can write the data to the disc without a problem. As I said for me, the 40 MB/s card has worked perfectly, but I don't see an issue if you get a card that supports a faster speed.
On the official user manual for this camera (www.canon.co.za/cameras/powershot-sx730-hs/specifications/), they state:
Memory Card Type: Type SD, SDHC, SDXC (UHS Speed Class 1 compatible)
Here is an interesting article to read: petapixel.com/2014/06/24/back-basics-difference-sd-sdhc-sdxc-best/
Here is an excerpt from that article:
========
"First off you might be asking yourself, ‘What is SD?’ SD stands for Secure Digital.
However, video doesn’t need as big a data pipe because the video format is a smaller “fixed stream” that uses only a portion of the data pipe."

I hope this helps. Have a great weekend.
Cheers, Sean

great video and very informative, really helped, thank you!
Hey Ally, thanks for your kind feedback. What future videos would you like to see on my channel?
Hi there nice guide, I know this video was posted a while ago but wonder if you could advise, when filming video there is a black blur at the edge of the screen when moving the camera. Probably going to send it back unless there is something that can be done in settings to fix this? Thanks
Hi, I'm sorry to hear that. Yes, that does not sound right. I'd contact Canon support or get a replacement unit. I hope you get it sorted. Cheers, Sean
What would you suggest for indoor pictures? I keep trying different settings but am finding some come out blurry and some clear. I can't figure out why.

how did you set your camera up for the best video quality
Hi Sierra, I just set it to video and started shooting. When starting out, it's best to just shoot, edit, publish and learn ... there will always be time later to get the best video quality. I like keeping things simple at first and then refining them later. I hope that helps. Have a great day.
Thank you very much for the tutorial, i just have one question, how do i set my camera to take a panoramic view photo
Pamela Smit - To my knowledge, this camera does not have a panoramic mode.
Nope it does not. You have to buy a camera with a specific icon showing tghat I does take Panaramic..
Hi does this camera have a slow motion setting? I have the camera but am not sure how to shoot in slow motion or if it even does. Let me know thanks!
Hey Adam, no it does not have a slow mo function. You'd have to create slo mo in post production. Cheers, Sean
@@Sean_Twomey thank you
Short question. Can I use manual focus while recording a video?
Hey, I don't think that's possible, but I stand to be corrected. I'd have to test it and I don't film with this camera anymore.

Sean P Twomey thanks so much ur a life saver
is there a way to create a timelapse video on the camera?
Sawi C - No, not on this model.
Can it be charged without the charger? Simply via usb?
whats the best setting to film a short film? Obviously isn't the greatest camera for it I cant afford a 40 grand one
I generally just use the dedicated video mode, which uses auto settings. You can then make further adjustments in your editing and post production. You could also consider getting the Sony ZV-1, which shoots in 4K. I've shot all my most recent talking head videos with the ZV-1. You can see my unboxing video here: ruclips.net/video/pyJpvuRA85E/видео.html
Alternatively, I shoot a lot of my videos on my iPhone 12 Mini in 4K, which works really well, given how compact and affordable these cameras are. Using larger and more expensive cameras will of course give a better result. I hope this helps.
